I have now read All Systems Red from The Murderbot Diaries, and I think the main charm of it is I went in fully expecting a "Humans treat robots like appliances then some of them slowly learn not to because of This One Special Example" but instead the crew immediately goes "No, Murderbot is a person. Look at it, it's got anxiety."
Meanwhile, Murderbot itself is like "Why was I cursed with a face. Please treat me like an appliance so I don't have to make eye contact with any of you. I've got anxiety."

Murderbot is such a neurodivergent power fantasy. It can
- store unlimited media and watch it privately
- turn down sensory organs that are bothering it
- look at stuff without its eyes
- cross reference its data storage when it doesn't know what to say
- program "human-like behavior"
- super duper kill the shit out of anyone that fucks with it

🐚New shell, new me! ✨
Hermit crabs are temporary tenants of their mobile homes—just like we need new clothes as we grow, hermit crabs too must search for a new shell as they outgrow their old one. But shellecting their new digs can be tricky business—it can’t be too big or too small, too heavy or too damaged, and of course, it can’t be already occupied by another hermit crab, or worse, its original gastropod designer!
After a quick inspection, move-in is a snap. (After all, a naked hermit crab is a hermit crab snack to potential predators…) They’ll line their shells up, wiggle out of the old, and settle into the new in seconds, leaving the old shell behind for the next hermit crab looking for an upgrade.
If you’re looking for these couture crustaceans along the shore, remember to practice tidepool etiquette—no shellfish behavior allowed! Please leave those empty shells undisturbed for potential hermit homes. 🌊🐚

my father just found out about the murderbot casting and sent me like a dozen angry texts about it back to back, and his take is that for thematic reasons murderbot needs to not be a white man because it is constantly misjudged based on its appearance and assumed to have no real inner life or personhood, which is (1) very insightful, (2) not actually a take i have seen elsewhere in The Discourse so far (though i have not gone out of my way to look for The Discourse tbf), and (3) not remotely what i expected a not-very-online 60something cishet white guy not ordinarily given to literary analysis to say about it??? really caught me off-guard and now i'm also annoyed i didn't think of it. like, i, the litcrit queer am over here going "idk i just think it's the least interesting choice you could make" and he's thinking about the subtextual resonances and/or ways of communicating the marginalized status of a secunit to the audience on a visceral level. goddammit.

the fact that sex played such a huge role in Mickey 17 isn't just a fun hot little addition to a good movie about antifascism - it's intrinsic.
They want your sexuality repressed unless you're procreating the "right kind" of babies.
Nasha wants Mickey to be able to grow old with her so that she can suck him off for the rest of her god damned life. Nasha wants to know the name of every sexual position so intimately that her sopping wet boyfriend and her can use the names as a secret code in public. Nasha wants to have sex to feel ALIVE and full of joy. Nasha is going to break federal law to have a threesome with her boyfriend and his clone and she's gonna be high as a fucking kite when she does it. Sexual expression IS resisting fascism because the joy of fucking connects us and gives us something to fight for. Nasha is a hero and her sexuality is intrinsic to it.

extremely refreshing to see not only a woman but a black woman in a movie who is smart and tough and badass but also extremely into sex and loves her partner with unwavering loyalty, obsession, and jealousy. not only did she survive the movie she also got promoted to a position of leadership and power. mickey 17 really is that movie. a lover girl to her core nasha baby you will forever be that girl.
