New Forest Cicada
(Cicadetta montana)
Pen, watercolour & gouache
This species is the only cicada native to the UK. Although it is one of the largest insects to be found here, it has proved to be incredibly hard to spot - there have been no recorded sightings for over a decade. Unfortunately, they are critically endangered which is thought to be largely due to a lack of suitable habitat. In order to have any chance of spotting this cicada, your best chance is in the New Forest National Park in Southern England. It mainly chooses sunny, south-facing woodlands and sings a particular high-pitched song which can be too high a frequency for some older ears to hear. If this is not challenging enough, it mainly lives high up in the tree canopies or underground as a nymph when reaching maturity.
This is one of a number entomological studies making up my Insectarium collection which aims to explore the fragility of our native insects in the UK and the increasing pressures placed on their ecosystems.
