Steve was surprised, to be sure. Surprised enough to show it on his face, but he schooled his features and offered a soft smile. “I’m glad for you, Peggy. I- I hope I’ll get to meet this someone someday. How did you-” He looked around. “How did you even get here anyway? To this time period, I mean.”

“No, no, I… I’d like to. Only I wouldn’t want to, erm…” Peggy paused, choosing her words carefully. “I wouldn’t want to lead you on.”

“After you… ‘died,’ I met someone. Someone I now love very much.”

Steve frowned at Bucky’s name. “Did he know you were tailing him?” He looked down and sighed. “Still don’t know what to think of all of it, Nat. That he’s still alive, what they did to him, any of it. He always looked after me. I’m here and he’s out there and it’s like I’m not returning the favor.”

“Well, to be honest,” She let out a soft sigh, then shrugged. “I wanted to track down Bucky. I followed him for a little while, but then stopped. I just wanted to know if he was doing alright, you know? It only felt moral of me to do so. At least, after all that’s happened recently.”

“Well, maybe next time you should consider going just to see the sights and drink all of their beers!” Natasha nudged him and laughed softly. “Lucky for you, they’re not too secret. One of them was actually rather close to both of us.”

"I’ll be sure to put that on my list of places to go,” Steve chuckled softly. Though, truth be told, it was still hard to imagine going back there. He lost friends and allies there, he’d left them too. Not once did he imagine when he went into the ice that he’d come out of it 70 years later. It was still surreal to him.

He snapped out of his reverie a moment later as Natasha continued. “Oh? Who might that be?”

She nodded, pulling herself to her feet. “Sounds like a plan, then.” She started pulling her hair back, already excited for the sparring match. She nodded at the comment about Tony. “Yeah, that was my thought. It gets old, having to clean those things up. And it certainly never hurts to have checks and balances. Never a good idea to let one person have too much power.” She hadn’t been involved in the Ultron incident directly, but she’d certainly heard enough about it to be wary.

Steve chuckled, rising to his feet. “You head on up, I’ll take care of the cups.” His mouth straightened as the topic moved back to Tony. “He’s inventive and creative as his father was, but far more reckless. Howard pushed the boundaries, but Tony forces his way through them; with little regard for the consequences. I’d trust him a whole lot more if he took that into consideration.” He reached out to take her cup and his, trying to get his mind off the topic.

He chuckled quietly. “I know you are, Steve. You wouldn’t joke about something like this.” He leaned against the wall of the elevator as it descended. “So what did I miss while I was gone?”

"Nothing overly exciting, thankfully.” Steve offered, crossing his arms before him and standing at ease. “We’ve had a few misfits attempting to take over the world but the small team we have has managed to prevent them from getting too far. Many of our SHIELD agents are in and out of the compound on mission to track down Hydra agents across the globe. Where did you head off to after Sokovia.”

“Oh why thank you, kind friend of mine,” She walked past him, leading the way to the elevator and pressing the button to call it. The halls were naturally lit and brightened up Steve’s face. Seeing him again made her feel delighted. “No worries, my previous location isn’t too secret. I ended up traveling around Germany tracking people down for Coulson, and well, myself. Did you know the beer there is cheaper than water? Crazy, right?”

Steve laughed and followed after. She had a smile much akin to just after the Hydra threat had initially died down. He was glad to see her less tense. “Oh yeah?” He shook his head, a smile still on his lips. “I can’t say I ever been to Germany just for the beer. Are the identities secret?”

“Well actually, it turns out I have no real work for the afternoon. As it appeared that I was busy, I was actually just playing a good round of ‘How many piles of paperwork can I go through before losing it’.” Natasha laughed. “Let’s get that coffee?”

Steve chuckled. “Sounds like your favorite game. I’ll save you from losing by whisking you away to the place down the street.” He gestured to let her go before him and smiled at her. “So I haven’t seen you in a few weeks. I won’t ask where you’ve been, but I’ll ask if whatever it was went well.”

Peggy arched a brow. “From what I understand, this ‘super human’ is on the team now.” She smiled fondly at him. “Always had a soft spot for misfits, haven’t you?”

Peggy swore she could feel her heart breaking all over again, her eyes glazing over briefly as she was struck by the memory of the last time she’d heard his voice. She turned her gaze downwards, her mouth suddenly dry and her hands clenched to keep them from shaking. “No, I… I don’t suppose we did.” 

“Yes, she recognized the real villain and she and her brother turned and aided us when it counted.” He let out a weak laugh, rubbing the back of his neck. “Well, I always was one, so I guess I was bound to get a group of them.”

It hurt to see her in pain. Seventy years hadn’t changed that. He was always going to have a place in his heart for her. “I mean, we- we don’t have to, Peggy. I- I’m sorry I never made it to our date. But if it’s too hard now, I- I don’t want to push you.”

“Surprisingly, no. There hasn’t been much more of a few things here and there lately,” Natasha smiled and went in for a hug. “What about you?”

Steve welcomed the hug and returned it, glad to see Natasha. “Eh, not too much. Pulling together new teams can be interesting, but we’ve got a few new members who seem up to the challenge. Plus there’s always some new villain crawling out of the woodwork, it seems. When you’re done with your work, why don’t we head out of the compound for coffee. I hear that’s what the kids do these days. That, and the coffee’s not all that impressive here. Not when it’s all you’ve had for awhile.”

“I’m game if you are.” She grinned at him. She was already on good terms with Steve, but it was always good to spend time with him. At his question, Carol shrugged again. “He’s been designing some reinforced bags for those of us who are… a little harder on the equipment than the average bear. So far it only lasts a couple more punches, but he’s working on it.”

"I’m always up for a round.” Steve grinned back. Carol was a promising Avenger, and already becoming a good friend. He enjoyed her company, and more so her ability to match his strength. He looked suitably impressed by the idea. “Not bad. It would be nice to not go through them as if they were paper. Good to see he has someone keeping tabs on his work.” Steve offered as he took another sip of his drink. Tony, for obvious reasons, reminded him of Ultron and all the issues that created.

He gave a subdued smile, nodding. “Right. Safety, not captivity, I got that part. But even if it’s not a cage, it needs to be secure enough to keep him in. Otherwise you’re gonna have some serious problems the first time I need to use it.”

“I’m serious, Bruce.” Steve hit the basement button, waiting only until the doors closed to continue. “I agree, which is part of why I wanted to show you the containment unit before you needing to use it.”

She chuckled at his amused exasperation, but offered no further comment. At his question, she shrugged a shoulder. “Probably go punch my way through a few bags. Promised Stark I’d get him more data on the reinforcement.”

"Want a go a few rounds with me instead of a bag?” A punching bag was good for letting off steam, but Steve felt a responsibility to make his team stronger. If he had to be the punching bag to do that, he would. “Data on the reinforcement? What’s that about?”

Bruce’s expression mirrored Steve’s, and at the end of the explanation he nodded slowly. “I appreciate your candor. The old SHIELD wasn’t quite so transparent. I’d like to take a look at those first, if you don’t mind. I’d like to be familiar with what I’m getting into.” After a beat, he offered a wry smile. “Besides. I might be able to point out a couple of ways to make it more secure.”

"That’s why I wanted to take you down there.” Steve didn’t want to lie to Bruce, or keep him in the dark. In his mind, that was not something you do to friends and allies. Yes, the Hulk was unpredictable, and downright dangerous, but he was also an asset. Wakanda was... chaos. “Figured you would.” Steve let out a weak chuckle. “This is a shelter, not a cage.”

“It’s about time I saw someone who wasn’t my own reflection today,” Natasha announced, turning her head towards the person walking past her chair.

"That wouldn’t be much of a reflection.” Steve chuckled softly as he stopped by her desk. “Coulson keeping you busy?”

Carol smiled and shook her head again. “Could be easier said than done.” She held up the now-empty coffee cup as evidence, laughing. “Do I look like I intend to go back to sleep? Don’t do too good sleeping after a fight, anyway. Too keyed up.”

“You have no idea.” Steve shook his head just thinking about the times he had to lecture the little girl on not getting into certain areas. He smiled at her response, raising his hands in mock surrender. “My mistake. What are you planning to do with all that extra energy?”

Bruce nodded, hitting the call button for the elevator. “Figured right.” He shifted the bag on his shoulder, considering. “You said basement first, right? What’s down there?”

Steve’s expression turned serious. “I’m going to be upfront with you, Banner. SHIELD is still nervous about the Hulk. We know you do your best to keep him at bay, but even you have your limit. In the basement are specialized containment units that are built to keep him in if you feel you’re about to turn. Let me be clear, this is NOT a way to control you or him. This is a safety net for all of us- you and everyone else. If you feel he’s coming, we’ll have one always open to you. That’s where you go.”

He offered a half-smile, slinging the bag on his shoulder. “Guess I lucked out on that one. How big is this place, anyway?”

“We figured you’d prefer that,” Steve smiled as they started walking towards the elevator. “We have ten floors if you include the basement. We’ll start there first, might as well go from the bottom up.”
