Yes!! MediBang licensed Tadaima, Okaeri! They’ve titled it Welcome Home and the first volume will be available for purchase on June 23. Preorders are already open on Rakuten Kobo.

Hello! I hope you’re all healthy during these trying times. It’s been a long time! I had to shut this blog down back then, since I didn’t have the time or the energy to keep it up. But right now I’m in a sort of limbo. The virus forced major changes in my life, and in everybody’s I believe, but we’ll get past this.

I’m an incoming clerk now. High-key frightened—anyone who’s ever gone through clinical clerkship would understand lol—and kind of frustrated since I feel like I don’t deserve it. Apparently our clerkship is gonna be held online too, no idea how that’d work, and surely anyone can surmise that’s not the ideal set-up for learning practical skills, but… aaaall right. Still though, I’m too anxious for words.

Hello. Do you have recommendations for the best platform or e-reader to buy these new titles on? As someone who's only bought hardcopy and through sublime/tappytoon/lezhin, I'm honestly overwhelmed. I can't find these titles on June's website for a list of all available platforms its sold on. I just want either PDF or an e-reader that's reliable, easy to use, and has a wide selection of BL and manga for future purchasing.

I'm assuming you're talking about the Omegaverse titles licensed by Juné & MediBang, right? It's strange because I'd visited Juné's site a few months ago and seen the pages for Omae no Koi wa Ore no Mono, Okusama wa Alpha, Juliet no Baka etc. but now I can't find anything either. Seriously Juné, get your house in order.

Luckily for us, the ebooks are available on Rakuten Kobo and Comixology. I've used the Kobo reader app for years, mostly for novels, but it houses a great manga collection too, like Viz (including SuBLime), Kodansha and Tokyopop titles. Comixology is owned by Amazon, though the quality is way better than Kindle! The app is available for a variety of devices and it has an unlimited subscription program that offers thousands of comics & mangas for free. Make sure to enter the localized titles in the search box (ex: Okusama wa Alpha = My Wife is an Alpha, Tadaima Okaeri = Welcome Home) and you’re good to go.

Moreover, even if Amazon removes certain BL titles *cough* Yarichin Bitch Club *cough* from its platform, they'll still be available on Kobo.

Hi~ sorry for the random question, but could you explain what the difference between BL, shounen ai and yaoi is? Are they all interchangeable? Also, how is the word "yaoi" supposed to be pronounced? Thanks!

Hi! I'm by no means an expert on this subject but I'll try to give you a clear explanation.

BL or Boys Love (ビーエル　in casual Japanese parlance) is a blanket term for any commercially published Male x Male content, be it anime, manga, novels, games or live action movies/drama targeted at a mostly female audience. It is definitely NOT interchangeable with Yaoi or Shounen Ai, especially when it comes to their usage in Japan. While BL is the widely-accepted term to describe Male x Male content in Japan, it is slowly catching on in Western (non-Japanese) countries too.

Yaoi (やおい）

The origins of this term come from a doujinshi circle which used it to basically describe porn without plot. While this term is quite popular among Western audiences, it's usage in present-day Japan is almost non-existent. The image that pops into your mind when I say Yaoi is of two men getting hot and heavy, right? We may not give much thought to using this word, but if you mention "yaoi" to a Japanese person, they'd be incredibly embarrassed! Since yaoi has certain pejorative connotations, I'd strongly recommend switching to the far safer and positive Boys Love (BL). [How to pronounce Yaoi]

NOTE: Yaoi and Boys love is not to be confused with Bara. Also referred to as gay comics (ゲイコミ) Bara is erotica featuring "masculine" men (heavily muscled, body hair) created by gay men for a gay male audience.

Shounen Ai (少年愛)

The overall impression of Shounen-ai is softcore yaoi and to a extent, it is correct. Shounen-ai is romance between men that's light in atmosphere and heavy on the fluff, not smut. The origins of Shounen Ai are quite interesting as it's not strictly rooted in Male x Male content. For example, if you watched the original Cardcaptor Sakura in Japanese, the homoerotic undercurrents you probably felt between Shao Ran and Yukito and Yukito and Touya would be described as Shounen Ai.

In the modern, non-Japanese sense, Hidamari ga Kikoeru is a good example of what a Shounen Ai manga constitutes: a gradual progression of feelings, exploration of the character's inner thoughts, the presence of love without overt sensuality.

I don’t know how many times I’ve listened to this track https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dIAtF4TIj3o as I was making this work, but it’s the only track I needed to hear to express my feelings and pass them to this drawing. A warm, tender feeling.

What I really love in this story, is Doumeki’s way of thinking and the way he approaches the one he loves. Expressed with chosen words and gentle, loyal actions. An affection so deep, so meaningful, so personal.

-Why nowadays Love does not last long? Because it is not Love.

-What are the mistakes we do in Love? Love is not a possession. Love is a constant search. To live and understand Love, you have to deal with your maturity. A person cannot receive and give Love, if he only thinks about himself. He cannot understand that Love is like a matter of life “To win your life, you have to lose it”. They say, for Love you have to give yourself to “death”, if you want to feel it’s completeness.

Those who read this manga, can understand for which chapters I refer about. The tender way Doumeki showed his affection to Yashiro that night, personally I can never have enough of them. For the reason of how Doumeki “unfolds” this person, how he went down in Yashiro’s darkness, and made him meet all the things he feared. Together, alone. Doumeki was the one who end them all, he took the last control Yashiro could feel. His kisses made him a believer and “cleansed” every part of him.

Translation Nuances

This morning, I was browsing my twitter timeline when I ran into a relay project where they’re having 15 different BL authors write a chapter in the story “Let’s meet at Soleil de Tokyo” about an Arabian prince and a closet gay salaryman. They’ll be updating once a week (Friday night in Japan), and the character designs are by Hasumi Hana. Seems pretty interesting so far but only chapter one is out! Check out username rnk_0310 on twitter if you’re interested! The writing is relatively simple as well for the top batter in the relay, so it’d be a nice way to practice reading Japanese. You’ll learn a lot of BL vocabulary in just those few pages haha.

It led me to another author whose works I follow, and she wrote a side story novella published in an upcoming magazine serialization for a manga that was part of the ChilChil2020 BLawards. I went to go read it, and thought I’d check if it had been scanlated, and it has! I flipped through the scanlated version, and about a few pages in, I stopped because of the difference in the translator’s vision and my own vision of what it would be and just went back to reading the Japanese version. 

If you’re translating Japanese to English, there are certain things I think you should pay attention to. The one I want to cover is nuance/context. This is not to say that translations are wrong but they are very different due to the nuances implied in the words used than what I would have translated it to mean. So if you’re curious as to differences, feel free to keep reading. If not, ignore me XD

Hi again!

By additional audio drama, do you mean the extras in seasons 1-3 of the audio drama? Most of them follow either the novel extra chapters or some additional tidbits that MXTX posted in her blog (LWJ and LXC getting accidentally drunk for example). Some are original scenes that don’t appear in the source material (LWJ and A-Yuan feeding rabbits), they’re more like bonus material just like the additional short scenes from Mao Er FM gacha game =)
