ESL speaker here. Guys, is there any expression that means the opposite of "looking for the silver lining"?
Been using "someone made a wish to the monkey's paw", but I'm starting to think that this is more of a personal problem than an ancient curse problem.

Some notes on Char’s Counterattack while it’s still fresh in my brain and right before I watch video-essays about how I didn’t understand the movie. (With spoilers)
Tumblr media
For starters, it was as gay as promised. I’ve seen the Charmuro scuffle scene like a million times and it turned out to actually be gayer in context. For me, this is the aftermath of a very bitter and harsh divorce. The thing is already unsalvageable. They still try to talk it out every time they’re near each other, but Amuro is about to give up on Char completely (if he hasn’t, already). He even tells Lalah that he doesn’t want to be with that guy for all eternity as newtype ghosts, that’s how done he’s with Char.
As with Char, it feels that we needed another anime season or at least a couple of OVA’s to explain how he got there. I know that it had something to do with how disillusioned he was by the events at the end of Zeta, but the movie feels like it needed to give more context about him. It’s very clear that his ideals take a back seat in favor of his real motivations. He just wants to get back at the universe. Would trowing a meteor and freezing Earth actually help Earth’s restoration and humanity’s evolution? Did he stop to think that by doing such thing he’ll get Sayla and Kamille killed? Or was he too far gone to care about anyone that isn’t Lalah and maybe Amuro?
This may be unintentional but it’s amusing that the first part of Quess Paraya’s arc looks like a teen girl’s power fantasy: she meets Amuro, she gets adopted by Char, she happens to be the most special Newtype who becomes an ace pilot in a few days, there’s two boys after her, Char entrusts her to act on special missions and she even gets to kill her lousy dad. Under this framework it makes sense that she acts so selfishly all the time. Of course this later takes a dark turn when she starts feeling all the horrors of war and eventually gets killed by one of the older women she antagonized. Despite her not being a nice person at all, she was only a kid who was affected by her family situation and desperately needed a father figure. Amuro was honest enough to realize that he couldn’t fulfill that need (and he didn’t have to), on the other hand, Char admits that he took advantage of her and used her as a machine. He would’ve never done that to Kamille, that’s how low he’s fallen.
Tumblr media
Finally, Char’s last words were about how Lalah Sune could’ve been a mother to him, showing that at the end he was unable to get over both his mother’s and Lalah’s death, which is very tragic from a man that most of the time came out as Larger than Life. However, none of this justifies his actions. Char’s Counterattack was the last piece in the puzzle that is Char Aznable, and after watching it, all I can conclude is that he’s kind of a loser, isn’t he?
(Yes, I’m aware that it’s way more complicated than that, there’s still much to say about how he projected on Amuro and the nature of his relationships with other characters of the franchise among other topics like Amuro’s growth and Hathaway’s arc, but these are just preliminary thoughts. I may do a more thoughtful review once I write more about Zeta and ZZ. Also those video essays about how I Don’t Understand Char are still on my to-watch list, my perspective could change after getting through all that).

I like the LatAm Dub for Dungeon Meshi to the point that I watch entire episodes with it and sometimes, when I watch it in Japanese, I like to rewatch certain scenes to see how the dub did them. However, this week I wasn't prepared to hear Senshi talking about his "man boobs".

While Suletta has many characteristics that could turn her into a Char, she notoriously lacks any desire for revenge. Even if her whole life has been marked by the consequences of her family’s tragedy, she was never made aware that it even existed. She could’ve been raised into someone dedicated to avenge her family, but she very much wasn’t (this turned out to be positive at the end, since that lack of resentment helped her save her family). Char, in contrast, was aware of his own tragedy and his main motivation for a while was to get back at the Zabis, only for him to feel empty once he killed Garma. Considering this, I think that the G-Witch character besides Prospera who was more likely to become a Char was actually Ericht Samaya.

I was just starting to get used to the stupid keychain thing when I found out that canonically Eri's not a keychain but a permet brick in Miorine's suitcase.
....
Yeah, nah, I'm going to ignore that because I can't think of how would that work during the first days after Quiet Zero. The writers really needed to workshop the whole deal with Eri, tbh.
I really want to write something about the sisters post-canon where they finally talk thinks out. I still don't know how to do it without the brick/keychain thing getting on my nerves, tho.
There's the possibility that Suleta and Ericht had their heart to heart talk post-canon where Eri got to apologize and both had to accept that they went through some pretty unfair and messed up situations and now they have to live with that and try to do their best.
The problem is that said heart wrenching conversation is going to look like this:

So, from our conversations, I've gleaned that you seem to be a fairly experienced Gundam fan; if you don't mind me asking, would you be interested in talking a little about which ones, and if there's any you'd particularly recommend? In addition to Witch from Mercury, I've been (slowly) watching the original, but I haven't really decided on any after that.
Hi, thanks for asking!  So far I've watched the basic Gundam UC shows and movies (0079, Zeta,  ZZ, Char's Counterattack) + The Origin movies, Hathaway's Flash and a couple of episodes from some AUs like G Gundam,  Turn A and G Reco. So I wouldn't call myself an expert but I do have some knowledge ^^;.
As for which series I would rec after 0079, I would say to go for Zeta if you plan to continue with the UC storyline. It’s longer than 0079 and way more dense and depressing, but the ending and the main characters' arcs are very rewarding.  After that, you could go straight to Char's Counterattack and Hathaway or watch ZZ and bask in Lady Haman's glory (and then go to Char's Counterattack + Hathaway).
I know there's other shows that chronologically take place between 0079 and Zeta but they don't tackle the characters from the main story, so you could watch them later with no problem.
If the UC timeline isn't your thing, you could try out some other AU show.  The tone varies from show to show so it's a matter of looking them up and checking out what could be of your liking. G Gundam is a campy shounen show with big robots fighting in a martial arts tournament while Turn A has giant robots in a sort of 1900's turn of the century world and it also has huge Ghibli vibes and G-Reco has great character designs but I still can't get the hang of the plot.  There's other AUs,  of course, but these are the ones I know.  I hope that this answer can be useful. (As an aside, so far my favorite UC things are Zeta, ZZ and Hathaway's Flash . Objectively speaking Zeta is the best written but it took me ages to watch, ZZ is a mess but I like the characters and Hathaway is very surprising in many ways I can't tell to avoid spoilers)

Chapters: 1/1 Fandom: She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (2018) Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Catra & Entrapta & Scorpia (She-Ra), Adora/Catra (She-Ra) Characters: Catra (She-Ra), Scorpia (She-Ra), Entrapta (She-Ra), Adora (She-Ra), Glimmer (She-Ra), Bow (She-Ra), Hordak (She-Ra) Additional Tags: Humor, cosmic horror, Weirdness, Eldritch, The Horrors Summary:
Cosmic horrors, minor inconveniences, paperwork, treason, a sense of failure; Catra will tackle all these obstacles in her life the only way she knows: by taking bad decisions and using an exagerated amount of violence.
This story has been sitting in my document folder for months. I’ve been wanting to write horror/comedy stuff (in the style of Night Vale or Gravity Falls) but I still need a lot of practice. Figured that if I was going to publish this I might as well do it today.

All well and good, but wasn't Frodo like 50 in the books? He would not be Chil's surrogate child, but his middle aged comrade.
"Chilchuck would hate Frodo" bullshit, Chilchuck would be super fucking intensely protective of Frodo Baggins.
The ring you got for your inheritance turned out to be CURSED? And you VOLUNTEERED to WALK HUNDREDS of MILES to destroy it!? And when you got stabbed by a monster blade, the ELVES TOOK YOU AWAY FOR MONTHS and you THANKED THEM!?
No. No, I'm your father now, kid. You're joining a union, I'm negotiating your back pay for that trip. And your ongoing medical treatment, and I'm getting you EXTRA for mental anguish. Oh, the elves are offering to take you to some mysterious continent off in the West as recompense? Let's find out how many of these obscure cuss words they can decipher.
