Project #4:IDENTITY ZINE- Putting it All Together

Final Project Summary:

For my final Zine I decided to continue on with the idea of creativity, and being a creator, which were ideas I explored within my music video and collage projects. This time however, I decided to actually create a short little montage of sorts of a few hand-picked creations of mine, and show it off in a way that could show off all the things I enjoy

 Things Displayed Through Zine:

-Characters I created to show my writing hobby

-My love for hand drawn sketches, as every image was first drawn by hand

-My usage of Digital Art to go deeper in depth with the initial sketches and make any corrections required

-My enjoyment of music and how it influences my work through quotes from songs that I was listening to while working on the original sketches

-The usage of color not just in the images but in the various texts as well

-Using a mixed black gradient for backgrounds and mostly subdued color tones to my show my preference of dark shades over light ones

 Process:

1. All individual images were first drawn separately by hand

2. The images were then scanned unto my computer

3. All the images were then traced over digitally using Photoshop, and then colored using Illustrator

4. The circle for the logo was then created in Illustrator and all assorted images were placed in their respective spots

5. The character images and animal emblem images were then placed together as one image

6. The images were then placed into InDesign in their respective order with gradient backgrounds

7. Text of each Characters name was then placed over each image

8.The small textbox was placed on the edges of each image and had their respective text added to them

9. Used Photoshop to single myself out of an image

10. Placed the now cropped image of myself unto its own page and wrote my bio

11. Added my Tumblr Icon unto its own page at the very end of the Zine

12. Printed out 20 copies of my Zine and binded them together with an overlay

 My favorite project to work on was the final Zine project, as I felt already comfortable with my routine of scanning hand drawn images and editing them digitally, but was able to utilize new skills I had acquired from this class and try them out

My least favorite project was creating our header and logo. This could just be more in hindsight, but I feel the motif of the first project just now looks out of place given all my other projects share the same general theme of creation and creativity.

 I feel my most successful project was the final Zine project, mostly because I put so much more time and effort into this one than any of the previous projects, and was constantly making corrections and fixes to things, where there was admittedly minimal of that going on with the previous projects

 With digital art I learned so many useful techniques I could use to make my life so much easier going forward using digital art as a medium. I also learned so much about creation and the process of it through the videos that were shown to us throughout the semester.

 The only thing I could say I wish I learned really was just having more time to iron out my skills with the Adobe programs, though I suppose there will always be more time for that as I continue to move forward

 I always used my computer when working with my art, but learning how to use the Adobe programs helped to make my process a lot simpler and less of a headache, which makes me anxious to get more work done now

 My final book relates to digital art because although the initial images were hand drawn, everything else, coloring, any finer touches, text additions and such were added digitally, and I feel it shows off how I am as a creator and how in touch I feel with my works

 I feel the overall design fits in with my Tumblr online portfolio because they both use darker more subdued colors which match each other fairly well, and they help accentuate each other with combinations of black and other colors

 I think I’ll get an A on my final project because I worked incredibly hard on this, spending mostly every day working tirelessly on my Zine

I think I will overall get a B in the class because I was lacking a bit in the beginning but did myself to pick up the pace and effort through the rest of the semester

Reading #5 : MY CHOICE

I decided to do my final reading on an article called “The Effectiveness and Importance of Digital Design today” by Rouge

I decided to choose this because, hey I like digital design, and there are some people out there who don’t see it as valuable as others might

I think it’s important to share, not just because this is a digital design class but because it’s also just important to understand how crucial digital art is and is ever growing

we keep using technology everyday to expand our lives, so why would art and design be any different in that aspect?

digital design can help to expand art in ways unimaginable, and can even enhance and enrich works that currently exist without removing the charm of the originals

I always felt digital art was very important in today’s world especially with the ever growing use of tech, and can be used for various applications 

in short really, digital design is important and can even be used for more applications than just art, so lot’s of people should pay it some mind

Assignment #5: Show Me What You Know

Yay for Photoshop and InDesign usage!!!

So what’s up with the image? 

well, there’s a snowy field because I like snow, and winter, there’s no real place in particular that I enjoy so I just went for a general snowy location

one of my favorite people is Stan Lee, since i’m a comic nerd among other things, and think he’s just a generally cool and funny guy who helped me start drawing as a kid

for what I like? Space!, so why not have a shuttle blasting off into the sky with a magnificent Stan Lee sending it off

I used InDesign to edit some issues I had with the original Space Ship image I had found, like changing how the exhaust flames looked because it was a tad overwhelming

I then used Photoshop to remove any backgrounds and combine the images together into one piece

I used what image editing skills I had practiced with in class to help me put this image together

Reading #4: Beyond Pong: why digital art matters by James Bridle

One of the things I found interesting about the reading was when it brought up working with people far away from us

-Technology has really simplified how well we can communicate with those not anywhere near us

-This helps extend into the art world as well since people can collaborate on different projects from across the world

-With such a large network this expands the possibilities for the artistic world, and not just technology itself

The second point that intrigued me was art as a digital realm

-the concept of art being there but not being able to be touched

-this kind of gives off to me personally that art doesn’t need to be physical to be art

-even something digitally created can give the same level of awe and emotion

Project #3: MUSIC VIDEO = Story + Image + Sound

Song used in the video is Infinity by LEMMiNO

I bounced around multiple ideas when trying to think of something to base a music video for me around, and eventually decided on the idea of creating and being a creator in general

I tried to match the various video clips to fit in with the lyrics to the song since I tried to tell a semi cohesive narrative I suppose

In the first firse I wanted to get across that I deeply enjoy going into detail with any and all of my creations and try my best to put love into them

In the second verse I wanted to try and portray that while I enjoy criticism I tend to find a line between that and controlling someone else’s work and would rather just have it never see the light of day then be rushed as something that I wouldn’t consider my own

I learned to use visuals to try and convey my own interpretation of the lyrics as well as how to use a program to my strengths even if it is one out of my preference range and use it to the best of my abilities

Reading #3 : Allergy to Originality by Drew Christie

I honestly don’t entirely get the whole point, mainly since I’m probably being slow to fully grasp he concept, but what I can kind of grasp are

-Originality is determined by the person

-Most things borrow from another, and use it to create their own original vision

-Many things now are more often or not repeats of things done beforehand however, they can be done in different interpretations by the new artist perspective

-Works have always been used in collages or other such mediums which can be argued as borrowing from other people’s works and perhaps even being deemed unoriginal

-Two people’s works on the same topic could be seen as just unoriginal copying but the artists interpretations could make all of the differences between that

-I chose his works because their visuals immediately caught my interest and I was curious to learn more about them

-The artist enjoys working with digital mediums as he describes them as an extension of humanity, and the embodiment of their spirit

-He uses technology to give a unique feature to each piece like a face mask done with Data-Masks

Addie Wagenknecht

-I chose this artists work because the style they used drew my attention

-The artist enjoys exploring the tension between expression and technology, and enjoys blending the two works together conceptually 

-She uses technology in tandem with real life objects to create a certain blend of the two works working in tandem

- In your opinion, what is the role of digital art today? 

 I believe the role in digital art today is to be used to give a unique form of expression that could not be conveyed without it

- What kinds of personal connections can you make to your selected artists works? 

 Both of the artists I had selected enjoy the use of technology in art but also recognize it’s limitations or concerns

- What are the subjects, issues, and themes important to each of your selected artists? 

Both Sterling Crispin and Addie Wagenknecht both enjoy using technology in away to express reality and the certain struggles of the the digital age not just in the art world

Project #2: Digital Collage/Montage - Exploration in Multiple Media

Conceptual Idea

-I chose to make a still image photo-montage for my project, as I believed it to be the best format for what I was attempting to convey

-The overall theme I attempted to present was giving life through creativity

-I always enjoyed writing as a hobby in my free time and have written many stories through the years

-Each image shows some concept, theme, or motif I use throughout my writings, as well as displaying things that generally interest me

-I attempted to show the images escaping the screen to convey that they were being given life

-I chose to keep myself mostly hidden as to keep focus on the creations first, and to show how I would like to be thought of for my creations as well one day

What I Have Learned

-Overlaying Multiple Images

-Blending Images

-Changing the Opacity levels of certain images

-Using transform to change the positioning of images

-Using the magic wand and selection tools to crop out unwanted parts of images

Principles of Design

-Color was a big part of the overall image as I wanted only the creations to be brightly displayed with everything else blacked out, as well as using some shadowing to hide myself partially

-Emphasis was used with the blank white background on the computer screen, drawing attention to the creations presented

-There was an attempt to convey Movement with trying to show the images popping out and escaping from the screen as they were given life

Reading #2: The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction by Walter Benjamin

Two general ideas that caught my attention in this reading were

-The uniqueness of a certain work of art in its current time and place

And

-Human perception changes with humanity’s entire mode of existence

 For the first point these are the things I found interesting

-A work is only truly unique when it is first created, since it can just be remade over and over again

-You can see something multiple times, but nothing is going to be the same as the very first time you witness it, this can apply to more than just works of art

-The very presence of their being an original piece helps add to how it is reproduced so often

 For the second point, I found these points interesting

-A certain artwork or creation could only be perceived in the way that it is due to the period it was created in

-A good mindset to think of these could be how special effects in old movies could have been mind blowing before but nowadays are mediocre at best

-Certain ideas and themes could also become outdated as humanity grows and expands, so whatever was used as a basis for one work could no long hold water anymore

-or the reverse can happen and a resurgence in an idea could burst a once unpopular work into popularity

My Header and Icon have a theme of video games since it’s a hobby of mine I enjoy a lot, the health bar in my header isn’t full to show that I like taking risks in my work but know when to keep it safe, which is why I have full hearts beside it, my icon shows a hand reaching for a 1-up, which means an extra chance at something in most games, the intention is to show how I always keep trying at my task

In our society contemporary art is necessary because as a society we need things that will help ups think and use our heads

Contemporary art gives us that chance as well as helping us be more creative as everyone can interpret one work vastly different from another person which helps to create discussion and helps art grow as a whole

I chose the two artists Nick Knight and Vik Muniz initially just because their names entertained me honestly, but from browsing their work I grew to appreictae their style a little more

-They both show a heavy emphasis on Color

-Muniz focuses more on Line and Space

-Knight likes to work with more figured works

They both create interesting images that can create interesting thoughts and dsicussions about them
