One Song in Every Language
Okay, tumblr. Let's try something.
I want to make a playlist with one song in every single language. Of course, this is impossible- the spotify playlist limit is something like 5,000- but I want to try. Of course, I can't do this alone, and so I'm sharing the project with the entire online language nerd/ music nerd community. Together we can celebrate linguistic diversity- and find some really cool music :)
Here's how it works. This spreadsheet will document every song and language represented. When you want to add a song, first look in the spreadsheet to see if that language is already represented. If it isn't, add the song to the playlist, and then add it to the spreadsheet.
What counts as a language? This is, as we all know, a fundamentally political question (Russian/ Ukrainian? Hindi/ Urdu? "Chinese" and its "dialects"...) We don't have to solve those debates here. My thinking is: the point is to celebrate linguistic diversity in as many forms as possible. If you can make a reasonable argument for why a song and its linguistic variety should be represented, go ahead and add it.
Yes, this means conlangs count (cause conlangs are SICK!) This also means dead languages count- throw in all the Latin and Classical Nahuatl you like. Glossolalia (à la Sigur Ros) and semi-linguistic scat-esque nonsense (à la Kobaian)? Sure, why not!
I'm calling this one song in every language, but we also want to highlight small and minority languages. So maybe we don't want ten different French songs, but if there are two or three different artists singing in Sami (especially different varieties of Sami), throw it in!
Let's make this awesome. Let's make this huge. Spread it around to every language nerd and music geek you know.
Thanks, dankon, merci, etc :)

been working on a written form of slugsign- its been a really interesting exercise to try and translate a visual (signed) language to a visual (written) language (rather than the usually audial (spoken) language to a visual (written) language).
each character is a "transcription" of a certain sign's body language and arm placement.
Tumblr media
here's a rough translation of the writing, which is me testing out the versatility of the language by writing down the story of lttm's death
direct translation:
(first line)- cycle-predator lttm 5pebbles peace
(second line)- lttm 5p give-take(share) food-cycle-kill(rain)
(third line)- 5p kill cycle, 5p not give-take(share) food-cycle-kill(rain)
(fourth line)- lttm not take food-cycle-kill(rain)
(fifth line)- 5p(neg) kill(neg) lttm, lttm cycle (death and rebirth)
better translation:
(first line)- Five Pebbles and Looks To The Moon, who hunted the cycle itself, were at peace
(second line)- Looks To The Moon and Five Pebbles shared water/rain as their food
(third line)- Five Pebbles tried to kill the cycle (<-this line could use some refining, as the "tried" didnt get across with the language i had), Five Pebbles didn’t share his water/rain
(fourth line)- Looks To The Moon had no water/rain (to eat, is what is implied by the "food" sign)
(fifth line)- Five Pebbles cruelly killed Looks To The Moon, Looks To The Moon died and was reborn

kind of obsessed with the conlang invented by 12th century composer and mystic hildegard von bingen. she called it lingua ignota and just sort of never explained why it exists or what it’s for? like. girl. why did you do this
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
in case you’re wondering what was up with her, like, in general, she was an abbess who was (1) politically influential, (2) chronically ill, and (3) plagued by visions.
but like seriously girl WHAT was the conlang for. TELL ME

Note
are you the best at sheepshead?
Absolutely.
I will destroy all pickers and partners and they shall rue the day they touched those foul and rotten blinds, leaving them hopeless and desolate against my mighty queen of clubs.
If only I had been the partner…

Highlights from the conference room where they nominated contenders for Word of the Year 2023:
• They put Skibidi Toilet on the projector to explain what “skibidi” means.
• Baby Gronk was mentioned.
• We discussed the Rizzler.
• “Cunty” was nominated.
• “Enshittification” was suggested for EVERY category.
• “Blue Check” (like from Twitter) was briefly defined as “Someone who will not Shut The Fuck Up”
• The person writing notes briefly defined babygirl as “referencing [The Speaker]”. He is now being called babygirl in the linguist groupchats.
• MULTIPLE people raised their hand to say “I cannot stress this enough: ‘Babygirl’ refers to a GROWN MAN”

URALIC LANGUAGES 101
an over-simplified guide for people who have never studied them
from real questions I have received
as I am finally qualified enough to talk about them
WHAT?
A language family spanning (mostly northern) Eurasia. The three biggest languages by amount of speakers are Hungarian, Finnish, and Estonian.
WAIT, WHAT DO YOU MEAN THERE ARE MORE?
The Sámi languages might be the most famous of the "smaller" Uralic languages, but have you heard about Karelian? Udmurt? Hill Mari? Nganasan? There are 38~42 Uralic languages that we know as of today.
WHERE ARE THESE OTHER LANGUAGES?
Tumblr media
(image description: the locations of the Uralic languages on a map. The Uralic languages span from modern-day Hungary, the northern Nordics, and northern Russia.)
BUT I THOUGHT HUNGARIAN WAS ALTAIC / RELATED TO TURKISH?
Modern science links Hungarian to the Uralic languages. The links to "Altaic" (many on the field don't believe in the Altaic theory) and the Turkic languages are speculative.
ARE THEY RELATED TO ENGLISH?
No, they are a separate language family. English is more related to Russian than Finnish or Hungarian.
HOW DID THEY END UP WHERE THEY ARE NOW?
We still haven't figured this out, but the Uralic peoples' proposed homeland is often located north of Central Asia.
HOW DO THEY KNOW THESE ARE RELATED TO EACH OTHER?
Linguistics uses many different ways to find out relations between languages. With the Uralic languages, there are many cognates (=words that come from the same root word) that exist in most languages. These words can be used to reconstruct Proto-Uralic, a hypothesis of what the original Uralic people might have spoken.
Examples:
"tongue, (language)" (Finnish) kieli, (Estonian) keel, (Veps) kel', (N.Sami) giella, (Erzya) keľ, (Beserman) kål, (E.Khanty) köł, (Mator) kašte
"two" (Finnish) kaksi, (Courland Livonian) kakš, (Ter Sami) kïkktʼ, (Moksha) kafta, (Mari) kok, (Komi-Zyrian) kyk
HOW DO THESE LANGUAGES SOUND LIKE?
Here are selected samples of text from a few different branches of Uralic languages:
NGANASAN: Mənə ńinti̮ˀam ńiluməni̮nə inśüδüˀ, mi̮əďindi̮ˀam hüətə. (I never sledge in my life, I always go by foot.) SELKUP: Nılʲčik qumɨp mee qontɨrämɨt čääŋka. (We have not seen such a person.) BESERMAN: Picʼi pilə̑ sʼed jə̑ rcʼijenezlə̑. (To the little boy with black hair.) MANSI: Mənə kńigaðəmtu miśiəm. (I gave him/her the book.) NORTH SÁMI: Sáhpán njuikii girjji duohken. (The mouse jumped from behind the book.) TVER KARELIAN: Mie hüviin zdaičin igzamenati miun, na felÍdšerku pandih. (I passed the exams well and I was put [to work] as a nurse.)
If you have more questions about these languages, feel free to ask me! I am no professor but am majoring in this at the university so I know more than the average person hehe
