Hello. I’m a kaylor and I have a question regarding Judaism. I was on twitter and there was debate whether Begin Again could be about Dianna Agron or not. There was a piece of her interview where she talks about being Jewish and never celebrating Christmas (I already knew Jewish people don’t celebrate it) but she also mentions that her dad was Jewish and her mom wasn’t. From my limited knowledge of your religion, I thought that it’s necessary for mothers to be Jewish in order for kids to be considered Jewish and fathers’ religion doesn’t matter. Yes, Judaism follows matrilineal descent so lineage is traditionally passed down through the mother. If a child's mother is Jewish, then the child is considered Jewish. That said, there are various denominations within Judaism - as in varying degrees of religiosity & adherence to certain laws/practices.  Orthodox (and Ultra Orthodox) Jews follow this principle however, some Conservative (which is a more liberal denomination despite its name) or Reform (very liberal) Judaism,  accept both matrilineal and patrilineal descent. Most people I know, myself included, believe that if somebody identifies as Jewish based on either parent, then they're Jewish.

What people don't realize is that us Jews, are a People with our own religion. Judaism is not just a religion, we are a People, a Nation (just like the Indigenous Peoples of the Americas), and an ethnic group. Judaism is a way of life based on certain principles, practices and beliefs all centered around a set of moral values (being a good, kind, generous, compassionate human being), being good stewards of our ancestral homeland, the Land of Israel, & healing the world.

As per the ethnicity, somebody could be a non religious, non practicing Jew but still identify as Jewish, & someone could not identify as Jewish at all but still have 100% Jewish DNA (ethnicity)

Even though I'm not religious, my DNA results show I'm 100% Jewish and I 100% identify as Jewish. I hope that answers your question. If not or if you have any others, feel free to reach out to me via DM. I don't bite I promise 😁😁

Hi Anon. Thanks @milelarissa-blog for the shout out. No, she doesn't have long nails for religious reasons. Ones nail preference is their own to choose. One thing I would like to mention is that while Judaism is one of the oldest religions in the world, we are also a People (my DNA for example is 100% Jewish), a Land (the land of Israel, as indigenous peoples to the land. All of our prayers centre around the land of Israel), an ethnic group, and one big ass family. As for Karlie's religiosity, I personally don't believe she's Orthodox in the sense of traditional Orthodox Judaism. I can go into more detail as to why if you're interested, just send me a DM. I do think she uses/used the Sabbath (Shabbat) from Fri night to Saturday night to disappear in order to spend time with family (Taylor). While she may observe the Jewish holidays, that doesn't necessarily means she's extremely religious. Many of us celebrate the holidays as a way to connect with our Judaism, culturally & religiously, as well as to our family. I celebrate the holidays but wouldn't consider myself very religious per se. After Oct 7, 2023 & the explosion of antisemitism/Jew hatred, many of us Jews have embraced our Judaism even more. What amazes - not in a good way - & perplexes me is how all those people were tripping over themselves to call out, condemn, sh*t post Elon for his apparent N*zi salute but have said Jack sh*t, Zero, niltch, Nada about the recent antisemitic tirade & rant by Kanye West.
