my little 2-page game for the children of the night game jam: there is something in the dark with me. a game for two or more players to play over text when one of you sees a shape in the dark at night and the rest of you want to exacerbate that fear. presented here in its entirety.

One of our most frequently asked questions (sometimes asked with varying levels of politeness online) is "Should you be wearing gloves?" we’re very different people with very different lives, but one important thing in common: casey estrada.

we all dated casey at one time or another. we all feel conflicted about that time in our lives. none of us are still speaking to casey.

one day, we each received an invitation to casey’s wedding. it’s at least a week’s drive away.

one of us tracked the others down and sent out an email putting forward a plan: we pile into a minivan and drive across the country to casey’s wedding.

the exes of casey estrada is a gmless tabletop roleplaying/story road trip game about guilt, love, and trying to be a better person. the game centers around a series of prompt tokens which are pulled out of a communal token bag. tokens might tell you about objects, characters, or themes to include in the scene you're playing, but crucially, they also tell you whether your character is kind or careless. sometimes, your character will do things you wish they wouldn't - but then, who among us cannot say the same about ourselves?

the game plays over 8 sessions as you travel across different landmarks contending with your histories, your dreams, and your bad habits. each of the 26 locations you might travel to comes with its own scene prompts, tokens, characters, and minor rule inflections. you might mingle with strangers at a party, or get lost on the country back roads, or follow a touring rock band, or all these and more.

and eventually, of course, you will all need to contend with the wedding of casey estrada.
