i listen to my coworker talk about arranging a brunch with all her friends

i’m barely listening

i want to ask, what’s it like being a woman?

i almost do but i imagine how she would look at me

the confusion that would be on her face

because, after all, i am a woman

i’m a woman in the sense that i feel uncomfortable when a man stares at me for a second too long,

in the sense that i don’t walk outside alone at night

i’m not a woman when i watch a pair of best friends hug to greet each other and say

‘OMG you look amazing! I love that jacket!’

i’m definitely not a woman when everyone’s talking about how attractive that man who just walked past was

i wonder all the time what it would be like

to be a ‘girls girl’ (whatever that means)

would i enjoy it? would i be good at it?

it’s funny because i blend in with them

i wear makeup and my hair is always done

i like dainty jewellery & the colour pink

it’s an almost perfect disguise

when i open my mouth however (or don’t)

the disguise falls away, crumbles

i don’t understand, i can’t relate

the awkward laughs and unconvincing nods
