Rec List: New Authors!

Welcome to 2025! And as we say goodbye to 2024, this list is taking a moment to shout out new authors who ventured into 1D fic this year -- welcome aboard. It's truly amazing to me that 15 years since the band was formed, and 9 years since they as a group put out new music or performed together, new people are still joining the fold -- or dipping their toes into writing and posting fic, after hanging out in other spaces for a time. I'm sure plenty of people are joining via the solo music, but it still warms my heart to see this community that has meant so much to me continuing to grow and flourish. New fans are just as valid as old fans, and are absolutely essential for a healthy fandom ecosystem.

So with that said, here are 9 fics from people who started posting for the 1D fandom in 2024. And some of these writers have been incredibly prolific -- two of the fics listed are over 100k, and one of the authors has sixteen 1D fics already! Here's hoping we see more from them in 2025 and beyond -- please join me in giving them a warm welcome to the community!

1946. WWII has just ended, but there's still work to be done. To help bring Nazis to justice, U.S. government agent Harry Styles receives a new assignment: recruit Louis Tomlinson, the American son of a convicted German war criminal, as a spy. Neither knows the full extent of the task they're asked to complete nor the full impact they will have upon each other. The stakes are quite high.

Reccer says: This fic blew me away! It's an adaptation of a film, and I can imagine how much work the author did to make it their own. Harry and Louis' connection leapt off the page. And no spoilers, but I loved the ending.

When Louis Tomlinson needed to find a new preschool for his daughter, he wasn't expecting the one across the street to be everything he and Goldie ever needed. Or: the one where Louis is closed off, Harry is the weirdest person ever, and Gemma may as well be a psychic. Somehow, calico-cat-style, they forge a beautiful family from pieces that don't quite fit.

Reccer says: This series is one of my top 10 from 2024. Brilliant characters, gorgeous writing, Harry’s sweaty elbow-pits, everyone is a flower, naked treehouses and more.

The Handbasket Diaries by Hazel_tea_dreams (160326, Mature, Harry Styles/Louis Tomlinson)

London’s expensive and work’s a grind but everything is a little better when you have good mates who understand you. The narrow brick flat building in Brixton, home to Louis, Liam, and Zayn and affectionately referred to as The Handbasket, is more than a place to catch winks and reheat leftovers. When Harry stumbles into its midst (and Louis' lap) with flatmate Niall in tow on a particularly hot Pride weekend, none of the five of them will be fully prepared for the shenanigans, tomfoolery, true friendship, or steamy romance that will unfold over the year.

Reccer says: This was so fucking lovely. I binged it in two days—only put it down to scream about it on Bluesky (and sleep and like, essential stuff). The writing is witty and tender and, apparently, communication kink is my jam. This is the only fic (in recent memory) that I finished and then wanted to restart immediately.

Reminders:

The main pairing of your fic must include Harry (no rules on side pairings). Since this fest is intended to promote rare pairs, the only pairing you cannot write is Harry/Louis. This means that Harry cannot be paired with Louis in any circumstance.

Louis pranked the crew before a concert after he found a two-way radio in his dressing room. But messing with the radio had an unintended consequence.

🎃 Moon In Her Eyes (2020, G, werewolves)

Niall had been looking forward to Halloween with his friends for weeks. He couldn’t help but feel disappointed that his night out was ruined by the anxiety of being spotted.

🎃 Best Couples Costume (2020, T, pandemic fluff/crack)

“It’s a shame. Halloween is even on Saturday this year,” Liam said. “This was going to be our year! We would’ve won this time.” Harry pouted. “You wish.” Niall teased. “You two haven’t won the best couples costume award yet.”

🎃 Room with a View (2021, G, ghosts)

Harry draws back the blackout curtains. The view out the second story window is less than stellar. He frowns. “I think I’d rather have a view of the parking lot.” “What’s wrong?” Louis walks up behind him, wrapping his arm around Harry’s waist as he looks out. “Oh.” The cheap hotel they’d gotten such a great deal on happens to look out not over the nearby lake or trees, or even another parking lot. It has a panoramic view of a cemetery.

🎃 The Rescue (2022, NR, horror)

Louis likes to do one last round through the kennels to check that everyone has enough food and no one has tipped over their water bowls before he leaves. It takes him a second to notice the last pen is slightly ajar. Louis frowns; that’s definitely not how he’d left it after checking on their newest rescue.

🎃 Ghosted (2023, NR, ghosts)

Harry had dragged his feet when his mate Liam invited him for drinks at Horan’s Pub. He’d wanted to spend his Friday night under fuzzy blankets with a good book and hot cocoa. Besides, he’d protested, they already planned to go out the following week for Halloween. While initially reluctant, Harry’s glad he came. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have met Louis.

🎃 The Kiss of Sleep (2024, NR, horror)

Louis shook his head. “I’m proper knackered.” Too many nights on the road with the noise of the tyres rolling beneath them kicked Louis’ insomnia into high gear. He’d only been able to nip off for naps between soundcheck and their shows so he’d have enough energy to perform properly. But just barely. Now, with two days off and a plush king size bed calling his name for the first time in weeks, Louis needed to catch up on sleep.

Harry was never going to forgive Niall. He’d been so distracted by his roommate’s cleaning and fussing while he had been looking for the perfect trousers for Liam’s annual Halloween fancy dress party that he’d not realised the black leather trousers he’d chosen to complete his vampire look were arseless.

Of course there was a no return policy, so he’d done the only thing he could do in order to not waste the money he’d already forked out online for the damn things: he added a cape.

Surely, nothing could go wrong.

2020

And Then I Saw His Face

The fortune teller tilted his head and studied Harry with narrowed eyes as he walked over to join him.

“I’m Louis,” he said matter of factly, “and you don’t know why you’re here.”

2021

Ghostly Intervention

Louis insists his dorm room is haunted.

Harry doesn't really believe him, but if Louis comes to him every time the "ghost" comes, he's not going to complain either.

2022

An Apple A Day

Harry smiled a bit as he watched Louis stalk down the aisles filled with various vitamins and supplements, continually grumbling under his breath and occasionally even hissing at the bottles.

“They’ve done absolutely nothing to you,” Harry reminded him, amused.

Louis’ eyes slid from the offensive capsules whose label proclaimed they were now “odorless and more powerful than ever”. He apparently didn’t seem to care that many people used garlic for a number of ailments.

“I am not amused.”

Or the one where Harry and Louis peruse the vitamins and supplements. Louis would really rather not.

Odds Are That We Will Probably Be...

From the moment Louis learned no one would survive past the evening, the only thing he knew was that he had to get to Harry.

Harry's voice drifted in through the closet door.

“I saw a girl make a video showing her boyfriend haul, so I thought I’d make a Halloween Edition husband haul! So here’s mine…”

Louis turned off the tv and took a few deep breaths. He should never have allowed himself to watch a show detailing an ongoing serial murder investigation when he was home alone at night. His imagination was getting the best of him and causing him to get worked up over nothing.

Hello, I hope you’re doing alright and taking care of yourself. I don’t know if you’ve thought about it yet, which is obviously fine if not, but I was wondering if your plans regarding the timing of this fest have changed at all?

Hi, thanks for reaching out.

It’s been a tough few days for everyone and hope you’re taking care of yourself too.

It’s hard to navigate situations like this and take everyone’s thoughts and feelings, as well as my own, into account and do ‘the right thing’, since that can look different to each person.

Some people have throw themselves into content, whether that be listening to 1D and Liam’s music, watching clips and interviews, engaging in social media, or reading and writing fic, because it brings them a sense of comfort or a welcomed distraction. Others avoid it all because they’re not ready to and might never be again. Both are equally valid, as is anything in between, as we all navigate this heart-breaking loss.

I’ve given it some thought, and what I’ve come up with is that I will keep to the same schedule, so anyone who feels like they want to work on something and post it, they can, and anyone who wants to read them will be able to do so. I will reveal the fics and post the masterpost on the 30th as planned.

Hello, I hope you’re doing alright and taking care of yourself. I don’t know if you’ve thought about it yet, which is obviously fine if not, but I was wondering if your plans regarding the timing of this fest have changed at all?

Hi, thanks for reaching out.

It’s been a tough few days for everyone and hope you’re taking care of yourself too.

It’s hard to navigate situations like this and take everyone’s thoughts and feelings, as well as my own, into account and do ‘the right thing’, since that can look different to each person.

Some people have throw themselves into content, whether that be listening to 1D and Liam’s music, watching clips and interviews, engaging in social media, or reading and writing fic, because it brings them a sense of comfort or a welcomed distraction. Others avoid it all because they’re not ready to and might never be again. Both are equally valid, as is anything in between, as we all navigate this heart-breaking loss.

I’ve given it some thought, and what I’ve come up with is that I will keep to the same schedule, so anyone who feels like they want to work on something and post it, they can, and anyone who wants to read them will be able to do so. I will reveal the fics and post the masterpost on the 30th as planned.

1D Trick Or Treat Fest 2024! 

It's our favourite time of year, Halloween! Bringing you a sixth spine-chilling round of our frightening mini-fest of One Direction ficlets, filled with all the eerie and ominous tricks and treats we've come to love from our fabulous writers. And for the first time, we're fortunate to offer a collaboration with @pandapodfics for interested participants 🎃👻🕷

Rules:

Participants must be 18 years+.

Word count must be exactly 666 words long when posted to AO3.

Ficlet should have a clear Halloween or spooky/scary theme.

Must include at least one member of One Direction.

Any rating/pairing is allowed and content is not moderated, but please tag submissions appropriately. 

This fest is not anonymous.

Authors can submit more than one ficlet, but each ficlet must be a stand-alone story to meet the challenge.

No sign-ups. If you would like to take part, simply post your ficlet to the AO3 collection no later than midnight GMT on Tuesday 29th October.

All ficlets will be revealed on Wednesday 30th October at 2pm GMT, in time for Halloween in every time zone. 

If you wish for your Tumblr account to be tagged in the fest masterpost, please either include the account name in the author notes of the fic on ao3 or DM this account to confirm.
