hey I’ve been gone for a while
Tumblr media
This is the longest I’ve gone without a post. I’m still around. I pretty much took the whole month off because my car died earlier this month so i had to spend every waking hour online looking for another car. I have a sale going on on my Etsy right now (thelastvcr.etsy.com).
I also went to galaxycon in Richmond last Friday dressed as Rumpleteazer from cats.
I’m working on a new post. Just gotta edit the scans, put a watermark on them etc.

493. Super Bowl ads, 1994
Tumblr media
(source) (here's another volume that's slightly different)
Tumblr media
I don't know why, but I never pictured the Pizza Hut Bigfoot Pizza surviving past 1993, but there she is in in 1994 Super Bowl commercial. Coach said "more meat!" I only had Bigfoot once, at my half sisters house. Even has a 10 year old, I thought its was dry, barely any sauce.
Tumblr media
"That happened, and we all let it happen."  - Peter Griffin. Only lasted 19 episodes.
Tumblr media
1994 was the launch of the Dodge/Plymouth Neon. That car was a big deal back then. We laugh at it now, but there wasn't really anything like it on the road back then, replaced the K Cars. Lil ten year old me wanted one, I thought they were the height of sophistication. It said "hi", it had eyes, it smiled.
Tumblr media
It's Bud Bowl time! I predict Budweiser will win this year!
Tumblr media
Michael Richards is Kramer-ing it UP in this Pepsi commercial with Cindy Crawford and Rodney Dangerfield.
Tumblr media
I didn't realize Converse's Grandmama Larry ads were running in 1994! I thought that was way into the mid 90s. Grandmama was played by NBA player Larry Johnson.
Tumblr media
This is what Alamo Rent a Car thought the year 2028 would look like.
Tumblr media
Steve Martin starred in a Nike commercial insisting that the recently retired Michael Jordan was now playing in the minor basketball leagues.
Tumblr media
Diedrich Bader from The Drew Carey Show, Office Space, and American Housewife stars in a 7up commercial. Dude, 7up had enough money in 1994 to run a Super Bowl commercial?!
Tumblr media
"Can I play?!" "No!"
Man, McDonalds had the best commercials back in the day, and Larry Bird is one of the great commercial actors of our lifetime.
Tumblr media
LILITH WAS EVEN IN A COMMERCIAL. This was still during season one of Frasier, so I guess this was our girl's first appearance. My goal is still to be Lilith.
Tumblr media
A baby Elijah Wood and a grown former Vice President Dan Quayle starred in a Wavy Lays commercial. Some said this was a bad Super Bowl commercial, I don't think so, I mean its just ok. I mean of course he would do a potato chip commercial, since he spelled it wrong that one time.
Tumblr media
There's a dumb bit about the wind whipping up at the Bud Bowl. Game is tied at 14 points. At one point the stadium flew to a bar that was out of Budweiser?? And a customer grabbed a Bud off the field?? So Bud Light won?? 14 to 20?? Worst Bud Bowl ever.
Tumblr media
The lead out show was The Good Life, a short lived show starring Drew Carey, I brought it up on my post Super Bowl Flops entry from a few years back.

478. 93 things about 1993, part 5
Tumblr media
(part 4)
Tumblr media
26. G.I. Joe and Barbie's voiceboxes get switched.
A group of performance artists switched the voiceboxes of about 300 G.I. Joe and Teen Talk Barbie. This was later referenced in the Simpsons episode Lisa Vs. Malibu Stacy:
Tumblr media
Poor Celeste.
Tumblr media
27. Bill's Half Brother
Tumblr media
Leon died in 2009 at the age of 70. He and Bill met a few times! 1

28. The first dreidel in space
Spun by Jeff Hoffman.
Tumblr media
29. Lawrence comes out in For Better or for Worse (April 10th)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lawrence, Michael's friend in the strip came out of the closet in the spring of 1993. Of course, people got mad and demanded the strip be pulled from their local papers:
In the next few weeks, Lawrence, who is 17, will also reveal his sexual orientation to his mother and stepfather. Reader beware; the next two sentences give away plot details. His mother will insist Lawrence is mistaken, and his stepfather will throw Lawrence out of the house. He will spend a lonely night in a doughnut shop until Mike locates him and brings him home for a reconciliation with his famiy.
The plot line has already proved too rich for some tastes. Universal Press Syndicate editorial director Lee Salem says about 20 of some 1,400 newspapers subscribing to “For Better or For Worse” have asked for backup material that can be substituted for the Lawrence strips, and eight have canceled the comic outright.
Lynn Johnston, the Canadian cartoonist who writes and draws the 14-year-old strip, says she knew she was entering a sensitive area, but she’s a little surprised by the scope of the negative reaction.
“What I wrote was kind; it was caring,” she says. “It explored both sides of the issue.”
[...]
Thomas Mitchell did. He’s the editor of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, one of the newspapers pulling the Lawrence panels in favor of backup material.
“We had a pretty little heated argument among ourselves,” he says.
Mitchell finally decided parents shouldn’t abruptly find themselves explaining the material to their children over the morning Rice Krispies.
“It’s the comics page, man. Give me a break,” he says. “It’s an interesting topic. Teenage homosexuality: How do you handle it; how do you talk about it?”
Mitchell says he wouldn’t object to a feature story on the subject, possibly illustrated by strips from “For Better or For Worse.”
Bob Hansen of Enfield probably wishes he was getting Mitchell’s newspaper. Hansen is a Courant subscriber who called the paper Monday to complain about the tack Johnston’s strip had taken.
“I’m very upset about it,” he says. “Comics, in the first place, comics are for fun.”
Hansen says he doesn’t object to homosexuals, but he objects to having homsexuality pushed at people who aren’t interested in hearing about it. In particular, he disliked Lawrence’s remark, in Monday’s episode, insisting he isn’t confused about his orientation: “Everybody else is confused.” 2
Tumblr media
For the record, I obsessed over For Better or for Worse almost as much as I did Funky Winkerbean. Good to know Lawrence had a good ending as the strip wound to the end in the Summer of 2008.
Tumblr media
30. Dana Carvey almost becomes the host of Late Night.
He said no when offered. 3
Tumblr media
(eBay user 3d-ology)
31. Addy becomes an American Girl
There was some controversy among the company whether Addy would be "too real" for kids:
Indeed, the story of Addy may be too heavy for the frail shoulders of a doll, and it clearly represents a dramatic shift in the tone of these children's books. While the other dolls face such traumas as wild bears, sailing during a storm or even choosing between loyalty to the crown of England or the patriots of the new Colonies, none can really compare with watching your brother being whipped by a cruel overseer because he "done run off." In "Meet Addy," the first of her series, she escapes from slavery with her mother, after they are forcibly separated from the rest of the family.
Pittsburgh novelist Connie Porter, who was hired to write the Addy books, is aware of the criticism. "Some people don't want to see a character in slavery -- that's ridiculous," she said. "You can run the risk of being so politically correct that you can lose whole periods of history. Children are more ready to talk about these things than some adults are."
Porter, who met twice with the advisory board to discuss story content and the use of dialect, said that she has not trivialized slavery in any way. If anything, she has made it more real to a modern child than it might have been before, she said. "I tried to show how a black child would be treated during the day at the age of 9," she said. "That she had a job like a grown person. Addy works all day worming tobacco plants. She also serves occasionally for the master, who treats her with indifference. At one point they treat her badly. She's a piece of property." 4
Tumblr media
32. Krusty gets canceled, but marge doesn’t say anything. (May 13th)
Y'all Ever notice that Marge has no lines in the classic Simpsons episode "Krusty Gets Canceled"? She's there, but no lines. According to the DVD commentaries, Al Jean said that Julie Kavner felt uncomfortable being in an episode with so many celebrity guests, describing it as "tasteless". I guess she changed her mind through the years.
Tumblr media
33. Lorena Bobbit copycats
In a four-month period, at least three men besides John Bobbitt had their genitals trashed by angry women. In April, a 29-year-old woman in Milwaukee partially severed her boyfriend's penis after he announced that he wanted to break up, reported the Milwaukee Journal. In Waynesville, N.C., in July, Cynthia Mason Gillett, 28, was charged with setting her husband's genitals on fire while he slept after an argument, reported the Charlotte Observer. In April, Jose Dogelio, 31, was shot in the penis by a woman he was "flashing" on a street in Dasmarinas, Philippines, according to the Manila newspaper, People's Journal. 5
Cynthia was put on probation in January of 1994 because her husband refused to testify against her. She doused his genitals in nail polish and caught them on fire! 6 I could not find Jose's condition.
When I was a kid and I'd see pieces about Lorena and John Bobbit on the news, I pictured Lorena cutting John's penis off with scissors.

492. Ed's Party in Lockerbie (June 2, 1989)
Tumblr media
Sometimes kids have ideas, and they should just stay ideas, you know? Sometimes we shouldn't listen to the kids--but Pan American Airlines did.
Shortly after the December 21st, 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, 14 year old Ed Blaus of New Jersey sent a request to Pan Am to send the children of Lockerbie Christmas presents. Seems weird that a 14 year old would ask an airline to do this, but ok. A small child, maybe, but a fourteen year old?
I'm sure he meant something like a gift drive for the kids in town who lost everything that Christmas. Pan Am would give presents to the kids that following Christmas, right?
No, there was going to be a party for all of Lockerbie, and boy when the victims families found out, they were pissed and were assaulting the airline in the press:
Susan Cohen, of Port Jarvis, N.Y., who lost her 20-year-old daughter Theodora in the bombing, said the party was 'tasteless' and charged it was a publicty stunt by Pan Am 'to polish their tarnished image.'
'We're appalled by it,' Theodora Cohen's father Dan Cohen said of the party. 'Right now the rock band should be playing on the soccer field about a block and a half from where 75 bodies were found -- which is obscene. They should end their mourning but this is ridiculous.' 3
[...]
"I'm outraged," said a tearful Florence Bissett, whose 21-year-old son, Kenneth, was killed in the bombing. "How can they do something like that - picnic where bodies were found?"
Susan Cohen of Port Jervis, N.Y., said, "We feel Pan Am should be putting its money into security, not parties."
Joe Horgan of West Point, Pa., a member of the Victims of Pan Am 103 group, was quoted by the Dumfries and Galloway Standard as saying, "It is good for them to have a party, but Pan Am's involvement is despicable. We see this purely as a public relations exercise on their part." 4
"Having this picnic is cruel . . ." said Lynne Fraidowitz of Staten Island, whose 20-year-old son, Daniel Rosenthal, was killed. "It would have been easier on me if they had just ripped my heart out." 5
From what I've read in the scant articles I've found, Pan Am played a "he said, she said" with Ed and his idea. In one article, the airline stated that Ed conceived and raised money for the party, but also wrote the airline for help. The airline stated that they simply flew Ed and his family to Scotland. 1 However, a resident of Lockerbie said that PanAm had the idea of a "Summer Christmas", but townspeople suggested it be a party instead.2 Originally, Disney was going to send some costumed characters to Scotland, but due to outrage from the families, this was redacted. Hebrew National who was to supply food for the party also backed out. 3
Tumblr media
(Business Insider)
While families picketed outside of the PanAm headquarters in New York City, in Scotland the party went on with a concerts, bagpipes and food. 2 A football coach from Syracuse University (which lost 37 students in the bombing) came to give kids football lessons, which was a peculiar choice. Apparently there was no representation from Pan Am at the actual party.3
I found a Facebook post from the Annandale Herald and Moffat News on the 30th anniversary of the party. Most partygoers who were probably kids at the time, mostly remembered eating pizza.

244. The Big List of Favorite Commercials (part 17)
Tumblr media
(part 16)
Tumblr media
1985 Velveeta Extra Thick Slices "enough for the biggest cheese appetite" TV Commercial
This commercial is kinda sickening but I love that "extra thick" voice. That plastic cheese is too thick!
Tumblr media
"Six Degrees of Separation" by John Guare at Lincoln Center Theater [1990]
"His shirt isn't bleeding! HE'S BLEEDING!"
Tumblr media
Frankie and Johnny's Furniture: See the Special Man [1989?]
[grumbling] "Let her have it!"
Tumblr media
Conan showed this old commercial from New Orleans on his show back in 2012.
Here is a news report on it.
Tumblr media
Jane Lynch Roach Control Combat Commercial 1995
Doesn't this look like a parody of a Combat commercial, and not a real combat commercial? Reminds me a lil of that SNL sketch with the roach killer that teared off their legs and then used the legs to beat the roach to death. However, this time Jane is the host of the episode.
Tumblr media
New Coke Commercial (1986)
Next time I go out this week (which let's face it will probably just be the Publix) I'm doing my makeup like this.
Tumblr media
McDonald's Filet-O-Fish - Commercial Classic 1985
This Minnie the Moocher x Filet O Fish mashup is a JAM.
Tumblr media
Kraft Singles Tennis Cards Promo - Australian Commercial
We love you and your giant packs of cheese, Pam.
Tumblr media
Little Shop of Horrors broadway play commercial 1983
Now, I've never seen Little Shop, I've only seen the parody on Family Guy of "Somewhere That's Green", and I just read the plot on wikipedia and it sounds sad. BUT but, this commercial has Marlene Danielle from Cats, pre her being with Cats through its entire original Broadway run.
Tumblr media
1986 Snuggles Poison Contol PSA
Never ever ever...touch, taste or drink...bottles and boxes under the sink? Such a clunky saying.
Tumblr media
NBC Commercial - Thank You (1986)
I discovered this one from the Jaboody Show. Yes, they obsess over how bald Dennis Franz is, and how sexy John Larroquette is. This is a shorter version, I can't find the long one where Jane Pauley says "z'thank you".

490. The 1980 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, November 27, 1980
Tumblr media
(the whole parade is here, if you just want the commercials and highlights, it's here)
Tumblr media
Randy Hamilton from the soap opera Texas sings "Deep in the Heart of Texas" with a small child? Who is this small child. I want it to be a random child that they chose three minutes before turning the cameras on. Randy doesn't have a Wikipedia page! Sadness.
Tumblr media
Ahhh!! Is that a baby Mark Linn Baker in the GE commercial?!
Tumblr media
I love the crowd whooping it up for the cast of One 'Mo Time. I was wondering what was behind them --- I think it was the broadcast booth for host Ed McMahon! Just ... there with the saddest looking Woolworth decorations ever.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What a weird closing card (what do you call that?) for this Child World / Children's Palace commercial that aired constantly. Ok, the bear didn't fall on his butt? That was the best shot we could get?
Tumblr media
For some reason Marilyn Michaels takes off her gloves while singing "Watching the Parade go Byyy". That couldn't of waited, Marilyn?
Tumblr media
Todd Bridges sang a song about the Summer. I felt bad for Todd, he had no back up dancers, just dancing in the street. Was this a time filler? Loved the song!
Tumblr media
A baby Glenn Close was there with the cast of Barnum. I feel like Ed is auditioning for the Star Search hosting gig with this parade. I love his energy.
Tumblr media
I love the juxtaposition of Bryant Gumbel thanking the Museum of Natural history for letting people warm up in their building with Doodlebug.
Tumblr media
Ed sang a song! When was the last time a host SANG.
Tumblr media
I thought Cootie ran over a clown, but the clown deliberately laid down in front of him??
Tumblr media
Just for us Hampton Roads girlies, Busch Gardens of Williamsburg had a Loch Ness Monster float! It's still at Busch Gardens! The cast of Brigadoon was on the float.
Tumblr media
Ed was trying to find a date for Happy Dragon. He said "I guess now that he's 21, he's free to go out in the evening and date whomever he chooses. So if you have an eligible dragon hanging around your house moping, we might be able to set them up and in the years to come, who knows how many dragons we might have in the parade!"
Tumblr media
There was a float for everyone's favorite box office flop, Popeye! I think that's supposed to be Olive Oyl?!
Tumblr media
1980 was electric football's year. It felt like it was the only toy advertised!
Tumblr media
"Tonka's Bear in a Box! Everyone's favorite!"
Tumblr media
Finally, a game that looks like one of my dad's vintage fire scanners.
Tumblr media
Cowboys were HOT this year, due to the movie Urban Cowboy, and the TV show Dallas. Modern equivalent to this would be this past Summer's Western Barbie! We even had Dean Butler from Little House on the Prairie sing "Don't Fence Me In" while riding a tortoise. The Lone Ranger even showed up. Oh, and even the McDonalds commercial with Ronald was western themed.
Tumblr media
While Snoopy couldn't fly this year due to a leg injury, we had Underdog.
Tumblr media
Can we discuss how a station wagon is pulling a float. Later on, I saw an Oldsmobile sedan towing the float with the Spinners on it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This beautiful phone store.
Tumblr media
I feel like by the time we were growing up in the late 80s/early 90s, Kermit had more bad days at the parade than good, but 1980 was a good year for him. Just look at him.
Tumblr media
Casper is over here looking like the baby from Ally McBeal.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bob from Sesame Street sang a song while Bert & Ernie danced. Even Oscar liked the song.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, the entire parade isn't on YouTube. Looks like the recorder only set their VCR for two hours. One of the final things you see is Linda Ronstadt and the cast of The Pirates of Penzance. "I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major General" slaps.
Tumblr media
Related: previous thanksgiving entries.

489. General Foods International Coffee
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(eBay seller dreamofthepast)
We all know thee lil cans. Some of them were probably out first forays into coffee, maybe our mom let us have some instead of hot cocoa on a cold day. No wait, this seems more like a drink your Aunt Patty n Selma would have at their house and drink every day. She let you have some to feel grown up.
Tumblr media
Or maybe you shared a cup with your new Gothy roommate in the 80s?
Tumblr media
Even the boys who played football enjoyed it!
Tumblr media
and just maybe you sipped French Vanilla Cafe with your friends and joked "who was that waiter's name in Paris?" "JEAN-LUC!" like in the commercial. (yes I'm aware of the Mad TV bit)
Although in an article about annoying commercials that ran in the Rocky Mountain News in 1992, reader Dennis Lancaster said of the ad: "The ad that really bugs the heck out of me is that General Foods International Coffee ads with the two ladies there and the French cafe coffee or whatever it is. I wish they'd have stayed in France." 1
Tumblr media
lil samples of Irish Cream Cafe was given out at Black Friday one year at Target!
Tumblr media
I noticed that General Foods would advertise their instant coffee a lot in college newspapers in the 1980s.
Tumblr media
See, even Corky on Murphy Brown dank it.
Tumblr media
Before we had frappuchinos, there would always be the same recipe every year for a frozen or a cold coffee drink, just with a different flavor each year, it seemed.
Tumblr media
(eBay seller dreamofthepast)
See what I mean?
Tumblr media
(commercial)
In the late 90s, they came out with the Cappuccino Coolers drinks, which I adored back then. It was powder that you mixed with milk -- so yeah, gotta be near the bathroom when drinking those. Maxwell House just discontinued these this year. By then they were called iced lattes.
Tumblr media
(commercial)
My all time GOAT when I was a teenager however was the Kahula flavor. I miss it every day.
Tumblr media
(commercial)
Anybody remember the variety packs? They were like, half a serving! Enough for a mouse! The Suisse Mocha design always reminds me of the Murder She Wrote logo.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(commercial)
Tumblr media
(commercial)
General Foods International Coffee debuted in 1973 with these three flavors. Looks like Cafe Au Lait became Cafe Francais shortly after. You walk into the store today, and guess who is still there almost every time:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Maxwell House took over around 2011)
I bought all three flavors in the last month and yup they all taste a lil watery. Maybe 'cuz we're just used to stronger coffee in 2023.

478. 93 things about 1993, part 4
Tumblr media
(part 3)
Tumblr media

18. ValuJet flies for the first time (October 26)
ValuJet's first flight was from Atlanta to Tampa on October 26, 1993. By 1994, the planes with their silly mascot on them had made 15 emergency landings! 1 On June 8, 1995 one of their ancient planes had an engine fire on the tarmac in Atlanta.
We all know what happened to ValuJet just 2 1/2 years later.

This socks doll I also remember seeing at Kmart on a family vacation in Ohio that I desperately wanted. (eBay seller 13navybeans)

21. Julia Roberts and Lyle Lovett get married (June)
When Roberts returned to the set of The Pelican Brief following her wedding, the cast and crew (including co-star Denzel Washington) threw her a party in which they all wore shirts that read: "He’s A Lovely Boy … But You Really Must Do Something About His Hair" on the back. 2
They only lasted til 1995, but they were cute together.
Tumblr media
22. Base Closings (March)
Growing up, I thought this was the first time bases closed in the U.S., ever. No, a whole bunch closed just a couple of years prior!

23. Florida tourists killed
The state government ordered that all company logos be removed from rental cars, and it abolished special license tags for such vehicles. Rental car agencies now give customers detailed safety brochures in English, Spanish, German and other languages, and they play tape recordings with similar messages over the public address systems in their rental offices every five minutes. 3
There was even a bit in the SNL episode (hosted by Shannen Doherty) where Phil Hartman played Disney's Michael Eisner, alerting tourists that you'll won't get murdered in northern Florida where Disney is:
Hi, I’m Michael Eisner, speaking to you from the Magic Kingdom here in Orlando. You know, for the last few months, Florida has been victim to a terrible tragedy: the horrific murder of nine foreign tourists in Southern Florida. We here in Northern Florida express our sympathies.. to the families of those murdered hundreds of miles away.. in Miami, the capitol of Southern Florida.
8 tourists were killed in 1993. 4

24. Miller Clear
Faced with lackluster sales, the Miller Brewing Company has ended its market test of Miller Clear, the brewing industry's first clear beer. "We're not manufacturing it any longer for the near term," Eric Kraus, a spokesman for the Milwaukee-based brewer, said on Tuesday. "We had a tremendous initial trial, but repeat business was not necessarily as good." The beer that has been made will be sold, but no more will be brewed, Mr. Kraus said. In April, Miller began test-marketing its clear beer in Richmond, Minneapolis and Austin, Tex. 4
(there's some more about it on Weird Universe)

Earlier this year, a snap on her costume broke at the United States championships. At the 1992 Olympic trials, her blades were mounted slightly out of position, leaving her stranded with a broken axel. Skate problems also delayed her arrival at the 1992 Winter Games in Albertville, France, where she finished a disappointing fourth. By 1993, fourth was the best she could do at the United States championships. 5

488. Celebrities Favorite Lipsticks in 1998.
I've been wanting to compile some photos of 90s makeup, and there was an Erin Parsons TikTok recently about the popularity of Chanel's Vamp lipstick and nail polish. Now, behind her in the video was a screenshot of a newspaper article from 1998 that had a list of what celebrities wore what lipstick:
Tumblr media
And of course, you know me I love old newspapers. I had to search high and low for this article, since I don't have a newspapers.com account. This article was syndicated in late December 1998, into early January of 1999. Here is the archived text version. Here are the screenshots from the The Tuscaloosa News  Jan 3, 1999 article (1, 2)
You're going to notice some trends.
(please go to the Wordpress Mirror to see the rest, Tumblr is being a jerk about posts with a bunch of images, sadly)

487. The Dunkin Donuts Post
Tumblr media
There's just something that comforts me about 80s and 90s Dunkin' Donuts. Dunkin is kind of a joke around where I live, unfortunately. It's always hit or miss - mostly miss.
Tumblr media
(source)
Tumblr media
Maybe 'cuz Fred the Baker from the commercials isn't up at 4am making the donuts fresh anymore, who knows. He retired in 1997.
Tumblr media
Hey look, it's a real Fred the Baker from 1993. Steve O'Brien would wake up at 2am!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lots to unpack here:
-that Dunkin wallpaper!
Tumblr media
-Dunkin used to be a place where you would sit at a counter and chill. Here's a video of one in Massachusetts in the early 80s.
-I wonder what Mel Gee's wife really thought about him going right back to Dunkin after dinner instead of staying with her?
-I miss chicken salad and tuna salad sandwiches at Dunkin! I only had one once or twice at the Dunkin near my house that was barely a Dunkin, but they were heavenly.
-I wanted to know if just maybe this Dunkin was still open. There are two Dunkins on Orange Avenue in Orlando. There was one that looked way too new, and then there was this one:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(2007)
Is this the one?!
Tumblr media
Mel and his friends couldn't smoke in most Dunkin's after 1995 though.
Tumblr media
Thankfully Mel didn't hang out at one of the stores that recorded conversations! Dunkin said heck no and shut it down.
Tumblr media
Mel and his friends also didn't eat bagels back then either. Dunkin didn't get bagels in all its locations until around 1996! Back then they had 12 varieties! They usually only have two or three vanities at the ones near me.
Tumblr media
I bet Mel got his girl one of these for Christmas. Notice that separate round disc. You affixed that to your dash with the included sticky stuff, and slid your cup into the disc. Life before cupholders.
Tumblr media
Dunkin became hip to hang out at in the Philippines .
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Unfortunately this Exxon franchise in Memphis flew too close to the sun too early in 1990, and their venture serving Dunkin at their stations fell flat within five years. I like Janice's uniform.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On that note, I remember the DD's in the convenience stores at the Air Force base (PX?) always had the most saddest driest munchkins.
Tumblr media
Wait, Dunkin owned some Chili's?! According to a Boston Magazine story the investment "sent stocks into a spiral". 1
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Does anybody remember the Kaluha coolatta?
Tumblr media
I read this wrong at first, and thought that someone shaped a munchkin to look like a shaft, not someone arranged munchkins to look like a Weiner and balls. I think Sandra was just seeing stuff.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
David's Dunkin Customer Complaint site even has a wikipedia page. Here is the 1998 archive.

486. Take a tour of my childhood Barbies
Tumblr media
KMart salespaper, November 22, 1992.
(ok, these images came off of eBay, because all my dolls have been in the storage unit since 2005, and these obviously aren't in the order in which I received them)
Tumblr media
(eBay Seller jacquchan-58 )
Hollywood Hair Teresa (1992)
Was the "Hollywood Hair" line the sequel to Totally Hair Barbie? Instead of dep hair gel, this barbie came with a spray that when you sprayed it on their hair, it created pink spots. Teresa was definitely an example of "Barbie's friends had better clothes than Barbie". I mean, neon orange?! Yes!
Tumblr media
(eBay Seller reginsamor0 )
Western Stampin' Tara Lynn (1993)
Tumblr media
(source)
I still remember the first time I saw her. In the Christmas JcPenney Catalog that we always got in August? I remember going with JcPenney with mom to pick her up from the catalog counter. Then later on tat day our car nearly overheated at the DMV drive-thru. I grabbed Tara Lynn tightly in case we had to evacuate our car. Oh, the stamps on the "spurs" of her boots? Didn't work very well.
On the subject of Western barbies. I am in desperate search of the pink Western Barbie doll from the movie. I am not spending $100 for her! I hope Mattel makes more soon.
Tumblr media
(eBay seller niha4341)
California Dream Barbie (1987)
I think this was my first Barbie I ever got new when I was about five (I was more into the Jem dolls when I was super little), and I had just lost a tooth. I LOVED those yellow sneakers. What was the record shaped thing for? I forgot.
Tumblr media
(eBay seller uofmifan)
35th anniversary Barbie.
I still have this one in my room/office! I kept her in her smaller reproduction box because I loved it so much.
Tumblr media
(eBay seller we-r-toyz)
Teen Talk Barbie (1992)
So I saw Barbie Wednesday night, the 20th. I will give you one spoiler: Teen Talk Barbie is seen at Weird Barbie's place. She does not speak, however.
Remember when people got mad that this doll originally said that math was hard? Lil me who failed math all the time did not understand why everybody was so mad. Math IS hard.
When Barbie came to visit our Toys R Us, I brought this doll along! I got to pretend I was in a commercial with her and we talked about the Barbie Porsche 911.
Tumblr media
(eBay seller we-r-toyz)
Rappin Rockin' Barbie (1991)
My sister gave me this one as a late birthday present. We got her at Ames! I remember my dad was not very fond of her boombox.
Tumblr media
Radiant in Red Barbie (1992)
She came with me to see Barbie! An exclusive to Toys R Us.
Tumblr media
(eBay seller vom)
Wedding Day Midge. (1990)
When I was 8, this was the prettiest doll on my collection.
Tumblr media
Sun Sensation Christie (1991)
Who I later renamed Surya Bonaly.
Tumblr media
(eBay seller precious6691)
Rollerblade Kira (1991)
I had the rollerblade Barbie too, but I wanted to show off Kira instead. The sparking rollerblades that stopped sparking after a week! Everybody's mom was scared thinking they would catch the coffeetable on fire!
She may of became my Midori Ito doll.
Tumblr media
(eBay seller dsgoddard1997)
All American Kira. (1990)
This THIS was probably my most used doll. She was my Kristi Yamaguchi doll. I had figure skating competitions very weekend with my dolls. They "skated" to whatever was on the radio. I with I remembered what doll played Tonya Harding.

485. Some Coupons from July 11, 1993
Tumblr media
(Orlando Sentintel)
I was hoping to find more nostalgia about the food trends of 1993 from this post, and I really didn't find it, but it was fun to pretend it was a Sunday morning when I was 10, looking through the sales papers.
Tumblr media
This animation style was beginning to pop up but I can't remember what it was called! For some reason it reminds me of those little clown stress dolls?
Tumblr media
(source)
\edit\ I just remembered! The style that show Teachers Pet was animated in.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We were in the waining days of the oat / wheat bran craze.
Tumblr media
Ok, sometimes I get a lil ~*emotional*~, and this silly knickknack did me in.
Tumblr media
Hol'up. Did anybody else think these kids were eating out of the trash?!
Tumblr media
You may wonder what that Simplesse logo is under the NutraSweet logo. It was a fat substitute. Simple Pleasures was one of the first products that used it back in 1990. 1 I found this entirely too positive review on the frozen dessert from the Deseret News.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh my god I miss fro yo places like this. We didn't have TCBY near me, we had its knockoff -- Yogurt International, and it also had a barely hanging on Dunkin Donuts franchise within it around 1994? It was in the desolate Willow Oaks shopping enter in Hampton.
Tumblr media
Oh, hey they ran an ad in my high school yearbook in 1998. Had no clue they were still open in 1998. I see they were serving Columbo yogurt by then. It was gone by the time I graduated in 2001. Torn down and became a Dairy Queen.
Tumblr media
Aw, I adore Lucky Dog. Right before I graduated from college in 2010, I found a bunch of tapes someone used to record The Avengers off of A&E in the early 90s at a church run thrift store. There were SO MANY commercials for Lucky Dog.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Remember looking at these pages and picking out what checks you were going to order once you became an adult, but then you became an adult and nobody was writing checks anymore. You know me, I choose my girl Cathy, and the checks with the Starlight Mints on them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We were in the thick of the clear craze.
Tumblr media
That's something you don't see too often. Ads for Wheat Germ. I like Wheat Germ. Put it in a smoothie.

244. Big List of Favorite Commercials (part 16)
(part 15)
(archive)
Tumblr media
Diet Pepsi - "Now you see it, Now you don't" Commercials Compilation
There is just something so calming about these ding dong Diet Pepsi commercials from the early 80s. I'm mostly Diet Coke for life, but every time I watch this set of commercials, I want a Diet Pepsi.
Tumblr media
1987 - Teledyne Water Pik - Ventriloquist
Well, is your finger clean?
Tumblr media
Sheetz hot dog commercial (1988)
Sheetz, she is a teenager.
Tumblr media
Leon Neon Commercial
This glow in the dark noodle toy looks useless, but I love that song.
Tumblr media
1992 Puppy Chow Grow up strong just like daddy" TV Commercial
This is one of the commercials I truly remember from elementary school. I mean, how could you forget those two adorable sheepdogs.
Tumblr media
1983 Seven Seas salad dressing commercial
I mean, come on, bunny detectives?!
Tumblr media
Silo Commercial (Phil Hartman) 1986
I know these Silo commercials were out there, and probably hired improv people, but why is Phil's divorced guy character straight out of the shower!?
Tumblr media
KPLZ Joan Rivers Contest 1987 ad
During Joans short lived Fox late night show.
Tumblr media
"Kellogg's Pop Tarts Commercial 1992"

484. The 1992 World Figure Skating Championships
Tumblr media
The inspiration behind this one came from a video on YouTube I saw last week entitled, "The 1992 world championship ladies was a mess" by user joccskates. I remembered watching this competition on TV the night it aired.
OR SO I THOUGHT.
I had a false memory about watching this! My whole life I thought my parents and I had come home from a rare Friday night shopping trip and the tail end of the ladies competition was on, right as Kristi Yamaguchi won, right as her, Nancy and Chen Lu were doing their victory skate around the rink:
Tumblr media
NOP.
I looked at the dates of the competition and my father was not home or even in the country, he was still out to sea. I got into Super Dork mode, and looked up the tv listings from my local newspaper on ProQuest thinking “oh, NBC showed the competition a few days later.” Nope, the night the ladies competition aired was on March 27th. My father would not get home from being out to sea for six months until April 2nd. Why do I know that, cuz I looked up the history of my dad’s Navy ship. All for this blog entry that nobody is going to read.
Tumblr media
ANYWAY, this competition was full of events outside of the competition. The events were almost their own event?
Tumblr media
Christopher Bowman injuring his knee during the long program:
Christopher Bowman of Van Nuys, who injured his left knee during Friday's freestyle program while on his way to a fourth-place finish, is not expected to perform in tonight's exhibition. X-rays revealed no ligament damage, but he has pain from a bruised nerve. 1
Tumblr media
I remember seeing this clip with my mom, and the clip of him being wheeled away in a wheelchair. I feel like my mom said to me, "see, he's okay!" because I think I was afraid he had broken his leg.
This was his last performance before turning professional. That's a shame. Sadly, Christopher died in 2008 from a drug overdose.
Tumblr media
Olympic silver medalist Paul Wylie wasn't invited.
Bowman, Wylie and Eldredge were picked for the Olympics, while Bowman, Eldredge and Mitchell were chosen for the worlds.
The official explanation for Mitchell's inclusion was that he had three times been an alternate and needed international competition. Left unsaid was the feeling that, at 27, Wylie's days were over.
But at the Olympics it became clear that Wylie, since graduating from Harvard with a degree in political science, had also enrolled in the triple-axel school. 2
[...]
Although that decision, which was made before the Olympics, might have been well-reasoned, it came back to haunt the federation Friday, when no U.S. man won a medal for the first time at the World Championships since 1979. The silver and the bronze medals were won by Canadians, Kurt Browning and Elvis Stojko. As a result, the United States will have only two representatives in next year's World Championships at Prague, Czechoslovakia. 8
Paul retired after the Olympics and competed as a professional skater. Apparently he spent the time skiing instead of being upset he wasn't at World's. 3 E.M. Swift of Sports Illustrated creatively used this in their writeup of the competition, a short of "wish you were here" letter to Paul:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As the article above states, Tonya Harding threatened a driver with a whiffle bat shortly after the Olympics. 4
Also in the few short weeks after the Olympics, she went back to her old coach Diane, got new blades, one new costume, and two new programs. Homegirl did a lot, too bad it didn't help? Too much too little too late? Probably. The crowd went nuts though.
Tumblr media
NBC's coverage of Tonya and her 4th place finish at the Olympics was ... rough. They showed a clip of her arriving back to Portland after the Olympics to nobody with the VoiceOver of "is there a parade waiting for you? NO."
Tumblr media
Tonya had disappointing performances, and wound up placing sixth over all. This would be her 2nd and final Worlds.
Tumblr media
Euro Disney being a sponsor
Since Tonya skated by it in the above gif, I have to bring it up.
Olympic Silver Medalist Midori Ito being too sick to compete. 5
Tumblr media
Okay, so Midori had a disastrous 1991 Worlds. In warm ups, she collided with France's  Laeticia Hubert, causing a cut on the side of her foot.
Tumblr media
Then, THEN, during a combination jump, she ... jumped off the ice and into the cameras. She wouldn't get redemption at at Worlds until 1996 when she attempted a comeback. She still competes as an adult figure skater!
Tumblr media
Kristi Yamaguchi's mom didn't sit with the rest of the family during the short program. She was too nervous.
Kristi had the hometown advantage at this competition with it being in Oakland, California. Kristi grew up in nearby Fremont.
Tumblr media
1992: Lu Chen of China does her routine during the World Figure Skating Championships. Mandatory Credit: Mike Powell /Allsport
15 Year old Lu Chen surprises with a third place finish.
NBC commentator Sandra Bezic said of her "this young lady is on her way to becoming a star." she was right, she would go on to win 2 Olympic bronze medals, and the 1995 Worlds. In total, she has four worlds medals.
Tumblr media
Laëtitia Hubert had a small redemption from her horrible Olympic performance
Laetitia had a terrible time at the Olympics in her home country. She finished fifth at the short program, but during the long program, she fell on nearly every jump. She went from 5th to 12th. Very upsetting. CBS commentator Verne Lundquist said "bless her heart, she's exhausted!" after she fell during a dance portion. That's kinda sweet, in an odd endearing way. She was only 16.
At the world's Laetitia entered the long program in a respectable 5th place. What music is she skating to? I can't pinpoint it. After only a couple of falls, she would place fifth. She continued skating until the 2002 Olympics, however she was never consistent.
Tumblr media
Todd Meno and Natalia Kuchiki's music slapped
She was 15 and he was 28. A bit of an odd pairing, but they made it work, placing 3rd at the 1991 Worlds and getting a spot on the 1992 Olympics. This was probably one of the final times they skated together. He would later skate with Jenni Meno, and eventually they would marry.
Was Nancy and Tonya overscored in the short program?
It was the second time within three days that the judging has been under a microscope. In the men's original program Thursday, Kurt Browning of Canada, who eventually won the silver medal, was obviously overscored by a Canadian judge. But no one could blame nationalistic fervor for the generous marks awarded to Kerrigan and Harding because there was no U.S. representative on the nine-judge panel. Gilles Beyer, who coaches Laetitia Hubert of France, was particularly critical of Harding's scores. Hubert, who is in fifth place, is one of two skaters, along with Josee Chouinard of Canada, who, based on their performance of the elements required in the original program, should have been ranked ahead of the two Americans. "It was a game of placements," Beyer said. "In the States, (the judges) wanted to support Harding. Objectively, Laetitia was third. It's a shame." He had an ally in one of Kerrigan's coaches, Mary Scotvold, who said: "The judging was horrible. I would have been very happy with fifth place, but not if it was behind Harding. Laetitia was third."
Both Hubert and Chouinard, who is in sixth place, skated relatively clean 2 1/2-minute original programs, which neither Kerrigan nor Harding did. Kerrigan almost fell before completing the second jump of her required combination, and Harding turned her planned triple jump into a double and did not even attempt a combination. As required, the judges gave them low scores for their required elements but propped them up with high marks for presentation. That is not unusual for Kerrigan, who is known for her style, but it might have been the first time Harding has ever received better scores for art than for athleticism. 7

483.When Tina Turner did commercials for Plymouth (1990)
Tumblr media
I know everybody has brought up those odd Plymouth commercials Tina Turner did in 1990 this past week, but dang it, I have to too. I love her, I love these commercials.
Tumblr media
It's a strange pairing for sure. I don't think of Tina when I think of a Plymouth Voyager.
Additionally, the Voyager ad is so interesting, because Tina says that other car copies have been trying to copy the Voyager for six years, and "maybe they should get Plymouth to build them...and they can just stick their name on the front". but but that's what Plymouths were at this point! Rebranded cheaper Dodges! Right?
Tumblr media
1
Tumblr media
Okay, the Plymouth Acclaim was almost a fancy car. "who says you can't get any satisfaction?"
Tumblr media
She seductively pets the seats in this commercial for the Acclaim and says "This car is built for comfort ... wonder what else we have in common?"
Tumblr media
I adore Tina's delivery in the commercial for the Sundance:
Tumblr media
"I wanna warn you about this CAR, this Plymouth Sundance. Half the people who test drive a Sundance, BUY a Sundance. So if you're not serious about buying a new car, you better stay away from this one."
The Sundance always seemed to me to be the "first car out of high school/college" of its era. I remember my fifth grade teacher, Mr. Young, who was in fact, straight out of college drove one.
Tumblr media
I kept the most Tina! of the Plymouths for last: the Plymouth Laser. Oh, I loved this car and all its badge engineered siblings growing up. I have a niece my age (so it was like having a cousin), and when we were around 15, she saved up enough money to get a dark green Laser. Oh I was so jealous.
Tumblr media
"Between the Plymouth Laser, and Tina Turner, both are exciting, both have great lines, and both really know how to move! Unfortunately, the Plymouth Laser is the only one you can take home with you."
--
Tumblr media
An honorable Tina Turner commercial mention that has nothing to do with cars, but I have to bring it up. I went to college for five years, don't remember much from it, but yet I remember this Tina Turner commercial for Hanes pantyhose that aired around 1996, 1997 vivdly. It's really just behind the scenes of the "Missing You" music video--a video you've seen if you watched at least five minutes of Vh1 in late 1996. (Apparently, it was in the first episode of Pop Up Video?)
I was listening to this song yesterday, and whether its Tina or John Waite singing it, this line always breaks my heart:
… In your world I have no meaning Though I'm trying hard to understand And it's my heart that's breaking Down this long distance line tonight.
Keer, Robert. “Identity: Increasingly You Are What You Purchase .” Commercial Appeal, July 1, 1990.

482. Seventeen Magazine, March 1996
Tumblr media
(see also: 1994, 1995)
Two things that are sightly upsetting: 1. I barely remember looking through this issue when I was 12. 2. I had to pay $30 for this issue off eBay.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, the Tendrecils line from Lancome is discontinued. Doesn't stop me from misreading it as "tendrils" though.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Does Kate know what magazine she's reading. This was Seventeen in 1995/1996, not 'Teen. 'Teen was the girly magazine back then. I don't know about Y/M, never read that one.
Tumblr media
Those Hush Puppies the girl in blue is wearing.
Tumblr media
South Coast Today [archive]
A similar green pair with laces seemed to be everywhere in my magazines for a brief time in 1996. I never saw anybody wearing 'em though. Never saw them at Kinney. I don't see 'em on eBay either, Joel sold 6,000 pairs at his store in 1995, wherearethey. 1
Tumblr media
'Y'all know Cover Girl still makes this?!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Remember this beautiful "great" packaging Maybelline had. If I had money to throw around to collect old makeup, this would definitely be in the collection.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The fuzzy trim dress was a classic prom dress (or, at least the teen magazines made it seem that way) for the mid to late 90s.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anna's dress is #1. I love the short sequin Hawaiian print dress. That is 1996.
Tumblr media
There's those black and white dresses again! The Chanteuse girls will kick all of our butts.
Tumblr media
I saw a lot more of these pastel dresses in my 1997 issues, which sadly yes, I'm trying to find on eBay right now. No luck.
Tumblr media
If I was allowed to have makeup back then, you better believe I would have worn this look at school the next day.
Tumblr media
I honestly had no clue that self tanner was a thing yet, or maybe just a thing that was sold at like, Saks in the glass case.

Slick straight hair. That was the thing. I had hair down to my waist back then so suffice to say I was not sporting this look

I used to get my Sanrio stuff from the My Doll and Toy Shoppe in downtown Hampton, Virginia. If you said the name of the store quick, it almost sounded like "MIDOL toy shop".

Every time I would see this ad for Kaepa shoes, naive 12 year old me thought "oh my god is that girl going to burn her school down?"

I had that lava lamp keychain and the 8 ball! I used to get them from either Claire's or Spencers. I had a Cracker Jack keychain too around this time that will just randomly show up in my dreams.

Did people really have scanners to scan in their handwriting back then? I imagine they were a small fortune back then. I tried doing some research on this software, but nothing came up.

Mickey was still stuck in 1995.

Oh, these were SO GOOD in the waining days of the low fat craze.

I remember when the Backstreet Boys got real big when I was in high school, I thought back to the ad and wondered "wait, haven't they been around for a while?" In 1996, they didn't even have an album in the U.S. yet.

Some of these look more like pageant dresses.
Tumblr media
I adore all the short dresses in this issue.

Is this a freshman dance? They look like freshmen.

Sharon Stone is a not-g0ing-to-prom icon.

Man, what happened to Finesse? It's like once 2000 hit, it became bottom shelf stuff.

There's always one dress that makes me sad in the prom issues, and I think it's this one. It looks so ... mature.
School Zone time, real pics of real kids from a school in Las Vegas:

The shiny, silky shirts!

These are the only two things I remember from this issue when I was 12: MaryBeth's amazing outfit--I wanted it so bad--and Jennaia's cat shirt.

A baby Tobey Maguire.

Baby Eliza Dushku. Did anybody else other than me think it was totally the norm for a guy to want to wear a bright tuxedo like this to prom?

I wish my scanner app on my phone got a better picture of this amazing Betsey Johnson dress Kathleen Robertson is wearing.

ok, a lot going on here on page 230.
-When I was attending Mary Baldwin College, there was this really cheezy store downtown that sold mostly cutesy poo gag gifts. Very cringe store. I'm sure if that store existed in 1996, they would have sold PMS Crunch.
-We're still in the waining days of the low fat craze here, so here are some "healthy" chips. Garden of Eatin' is still around! I think Guiltless Gourmet went out of business?
-I want to see photos and or footage of the Creamette Pasta Party at Tavern on the Green. All I I found was a blip on the New York Times:
On Saturday, about 17,000 carbo-loaders at the annual pre-marathon pasta party at Tavern on the Green will dig into five dishes created by New Yorkers, one from each borough. The dishes were the winners in a contest sponsored by Creamette pasta. The judges included as many weathermen (Storm Field and Mr. G) and sportswriters (David Kaplan of The Daily News) as food experts (Patrick Clark, Bob Lape and Robin Leach).
The meals, which will be served from 4:30 to 8:30 P.M., are free to runners in the New York City Marathon, which will be held on Sunday. The dishes are: baked ziti and vegetables by Martha Katzeff of the Bronx, rigatoni with beef and cheese by Mike Boyd of Brooklyn, spinach-rotini toss by Barbara Shields of Staten Island, creamy macaroni and basil salad by Karin Mackin of Queens and sweet nutmeg kugel by Diane Girer of Manhattan. All the recipes are by runners. 2
