Ben blinked. There was a brief moment where he looked hurt; but then his expression smoothed over, and he grasped her waist; dug his fingers into her flesh, just a little.

“I slept in the same bed as her.”

I know, she almost said—almost creased her brow in confusion—but then she understood it for what it was; a smooth, monotone confessional. A plea, to echo her own. Forgive me.

“I don’t actually think you look like you’re going to a funeral,” she said, catching Ben in her peripheral vision. She wasn't imagining it; he had moved closer.

“I know.” There was the unexpected heat of his hand ghosting along her back; and then he leaned in, voice smooth and quiet, and said, “You look beautiful.”

The praise flushed over her like a blush. She turned; found she couldn't meet his gaze, and so, out of habit, without quite meaning to, she smoothed Ben's tie and brushed invisible lint from his shoulders.

His eyes dropped to her mouth and then back up again. It pierced Rey’s lungs, the same way it had the first time he’d done it, hours into their acquaintance, standing outside a bar to ‘get some air’ whilst their friends were still inside.

“Rey,” he began, and she didn't know what she wanted to hear; only that she wanted to say, fall in love with someone else tomorrow; give me one more day.

Alas, not today (9th)! I've had a full-on two weeks and I wasn't happy with the state of the edit, so I've pushed it back. However, next week is looking much more promising for writing/editing time, so all should be back on track!

Welcome to another round of Berry’s Fic Recs where I tell you what is currently making me sheetcake (aka: eat my feelings.) I try to highlight lesser-read works, not juggernauts. 

I’ll score the Sheetcake Factor (or, How Much Angst I Feel When Reading) for each fic, but they are all incredible, standout works in their own right.

Halloween and Thanksgiving are over, and Christmas and Hannukah are around the corner. Before those works start arriving, maybe start with these treats…

* embers by @sciosophia…Rey & Ben are reunited for Finn and Poe’s wedding 2 years, 3 months, and 16 days after they broke up, but who’s counting? Rey is, because she’s still hard core pining over Plaid Northern Hunk Ben Solo, the One Who Got Away.  This woman can write, kids. The tension is hot, the setting palpable as Star’s Hollow, and you’ll be rolling in agony hoping she updates ASAP. Which is the best kind of fic. Sheetcake Score: 9/10

* firelight by @secretreylotrash…Ben meets Rey while he’s dragged along on a “Bachelor Camping Weekend” and she basically calls him out, gets him emotional, and doesn’t let him get away with anything. Obviously, he’s head over heels in love in under ten minutes. This intoxicating fic will inspire you to make a moodboard. At least, it inspired me to do so. I think I’m in love with this Ben. Sheetcake Score: 7/10

* Bottling Sunshine by @angrysoftboi…Reylo High School A/B/O. REEDUNKULOUS. Nice Alpha boy Ben struggles to keep his aggressively sex-obsessed inner voice, Kylo, on a short leash once he soulmate connects with Omega Rey at school. Great romp through a fantastically fun universe. Sheetcake Score: 4/10

* Can’t Sleep by @ArdeaJestin…Rey wouldn’t have a chance in hell with the university golden boy, Ben Solo under normal circumstances, but in the middle of the night he ends up in the library, just like her. It was only a matter of time until one thing led to another in the stacks. If you like modern AU, you’ll like this. Sheetcake Score: 5/10

* No one needs to know by @kirynt…they’ve been hooking up at work. She thinks she’ll lose everything if people find out she’s banging the boss’ son. He thinks she just isn’t into him. It’s hot until it’s icy, and this author is basically trying to murder me with angst. Sheetcake Score: 8/10

* Whole Lotta Sin by @fear_of_being_bitten…THIS IS DARK and full of non-consent. Don’t like, don’t read, but baby, don’t kink shame me, either, because holy HELLLLLLLLL. Rey is embezelling and Ben is blackmailing her. Sexually.  Sheetcake Score: 8/10

* starstuff by @voicedimplosives…you guys, Fetch is the Fanfic Love of My Life. You know this. Tamara knows this. The universe knows this. But, this work? This gem she wrote? This in-canon work where Ben and Rey have three chances to get it right? This glorious work? Proves why she reigns supreme. Sheetcake Score: 3-9/10, depending on the chapter 

Finally Reyl-hoes, @bettsfic, She Who Wrote My Beloved Poolside Filth, wrote a fic called Training Wheels, a modern AU based on the pairing of Clarke and Bellamy “Bellarke” from the TV show The 100. It was spectacularly freeing to read about an OTP other than my own. I subscribed, buckled up, and got lost in the story and found it cute, then hot, then angsty, then torturous and finally, wholly gratifying. If you don’t know how to write well, read This. I kowtow to her incredible talent. Sheetcake Score: 10/10 hands down
