“i’m lucky to be talking to you?” naeun scoffs, rolling her eyes dramatically. “i think you’ve forgotten who i am, sebin. a phone call from me is worth billions.” she doesn’t fully know if that statement checks out, but she’s sure that there’s some obsessed fans with pockets deep enough who would pay that and more to speak to her. there’s people who would buy her phone number, she knows that much. she’s dealt with her fair share of calls from mystery numbers, but naeun doesn’t pick up the phone to anyone unknown. 

“oh, the 22nd or the 23rd works for me.” naeun confirms, after she flips to her planner’s monthly spread to check. “you’re going to la? what the fuck is going on in la? … wait, k-con, right? ugh. that’s fun.” going to japan is fun in theory too, but naeun’s beginning to think that flying between korea and japan is going to become a frequent occurrence for iota from now on. she’s sure the novelty will die off soon enough. “shut up, and don’t compare me to some geriatric bipedal sewer rat. anyways, they have to draw me cute or else i will go master splinter on them. you know, it’s fine but … i would like to see you take on all of summit. and i can sing that cool song that edgy captain marvel sings in scott pilgrim while you do. it’d make for an interesting news day, at least.” she thinks about it a little longer, suddenly liking what she said as more than just a joke. “actually, what if i debuted solo with a concept like that? it’d be cool, right?”

“kcon and... some other stuff. i don’t know for sure, but i think we’re recording some kind of, like, show or something.” out of all of his wonderful personality traits, sebin’s selective hearing is what he’s most proud of. granted, it means that he’s usually out of the loop, but it also means that he doesn’t have to worry too much about what kind of god-awful show kostion will be working on until they’re actually shooting it. he thinks that his selective hearing helps him keep his temper under control --- less time to think, less time for his emotions to amplify. of course, he’s wrong. “if we could switch, i’d take the chance in a heartbeat. i bet the weather will be more comfortable in japan.” the weather is the least of his worries, though.

he doesn’t mean to laugh, but he doesn’t have any choice in the matter. the unexpectedness of it causes him to snort, but he doesn’t care; it’s not the first time naeun’s heard his least elegant sounds of amusement. he doubts it’ll be the last. “you’re fucking ridiculous,” he states, his comically large grin softening the syllables. “if anyone in the world could pull that off, then it’d have to be you. but that’s a little different than what summit usually does, isn’t it? do you think they’d go along with it?...” as he thinks more about it, though, he acknowledges that out of the big three, they’re actually the most likely to do so. anything to please the fans and rake in the money, from what he’s seen. “nevermind. of course they would.”

he’s always been a bit insecure about how long his limbs were. being tall was something about him that was praised often, and he figured people found it easier to look at than his face. regardless, he’d spent many hours standing in front of their studio’s mirrors and conditioning himself not to look like a puppet loose form its string when he performed. dancing was something he sincerely enjoyed, and dancing with others always made him feel better about himself. 

this situation was almost an exposé of that secret affinity he had for dancing around mindlessly, and still, he couldn’t resist a subtle grovel for the attention of someone who was willing to give it. well, that could be a stretch, but in sebin’s presence he couldn’t afford the time to consider it in fear of the other moving on from him as briskly as possible. 

the halloween anthem starts playing from sebin’s phone and he’s grateful it’s a compilation, given the probability he’d have to try more than once anyway. “thank you.” he says, a bit more sincerely than was appropriate, and he has to pretend he didn’t care because apologising would be even less cool. with a deep breath, he evens out his feet and bounces on his heels in excitement, before getting ready for the beginning of the music. 

for every second of music that passes, he settles into the familiar tune and out of habit, steps back to make space. once he’s gained some semblance of dignity, he launches into the dance with the same passion he’d adopt in his own room. when he closes his eyes, all he cans see is the hazy image of his dorm’s walls, and it comes back to him pretty quickly, filling him with a soft sort of… nostalgia. 

“i’m surprised you couldn’t do this.” mars says, spinning around to distract from the forthright reality of what he’d just said. “i mean, i just know you’re a great dancer. the kind of person who has technique and the capacity to learn faster than…most other people.” the fact he’s watched almost all kostion’s performances so far is omitted, and something within him prompts a burst of confidence in the shape of proper eye contact. finally.

there aren’t many things that sebin likes outside of dancing. well, perhaps it would be more accurate to say that there aren’t many other things that he would readily admit to liking:  his entire persona is built on indifference. not caring about anything. but dancing is something he’s never really been able to hide his interest in and after so long, there’s no use in even trying. so he doesn’t. he watches mars with a humored gaze, that wide smile of his returning with an abnormal ease. there’s no flattering way to express what he’s seeing, but it feels a lot like... a one-man circus.

not that he would say that, though. he’s a lot more self-aware than he lets on and he really doesn’t want to risk offending mars and consequentially losing the entertainment.

so when it’s over, sebin doesn’t say anything --- he just claps. it sounds a little sarcastic, like something you’d do if someone makes a lousy mistake, but it’s a completely genuine sign that his boredom has been satiated for now. “a great dancer?” he finally questions, eyebrows raising for a split second. of course, sebin thinks so. he has an ego the size of jupiter when it comes to his talents, but it’s just odd to hear when he can vividly remember a conversation with a different twentytwenty member who hadn’t been so kind.

“yeah. but...” he pauses for an almost-awkward beat, weighing his options. he could just end this whole conversation here by saying something mean and aggressive --- most of the time, it comes as easy as breathing. but he’s in a good mood and, with mars looking back at him, he can’t find enough malice to want to hurt him. “obviously you’re better. i feel like i’m talking to fuckin’ dancing jack skeleton. that’s a good thing, by the way.”

what is your favorite article of clothing?

“i have one of those black vans hoodies; you know, the ones you see everywhere. it’s not from a special collaboration line or anything. not limited edition. but it was a gift from one of my best friends, so it has a lot of sentimental value. plus, it’s just super comfy.”

what’s your favorite season?

“it depends on what kind of mood i’m in, i suppose --- classic case of wishing for cold weather when it’s too hot, wishing for warmth when it’s too cold. i like the transition of summer to autumn; july through september? when it’s really rainy and not too hot or cold.”

how well do you deal with crowds and attention on you?

“there’s room for improvement. you know, i actually... don’t like attention that much. i mean, i do --- but only from specific people. it’s a lot different from having the attention of thousands of strangers. i like crowds, but not when the crowds are formed because of me. the attention feels... sickening.”

eunjoo was starting to feel awkward, unsure if this was a conversation she should continue. the uncertainty was caused by the feeling the conversation already gave her, which reminded her of the days she was still in school followed by unpleasant memories of her beginnings. if she would’ve been paying attention, she could’ve avoided this encounter entirely. better yet, she could just have ended it with a sorry and kept moving. there’s a voice whispering in her head that this isn’t salvageable, but eunjoo would still attempt to nonetheless. eunjoo began to tap her fingers against her thighs as she tried to distract herself from the her discomfort. “well, i suppose that’s true but it was still my fault. again, i’m so sorry.” 

sebin had looked away, but eunjoo was still looking straight at him, briefly analyzing him. he wasn’t the first person who she had encountered like this, and he certainly wouldn’t be the last. all she could really do it try to not let the conversation decline too much. “yeah, i am the group with russian roulette. not really much that needs to be known other than that if i’m honest.” there really much to her besides the fact she was the leader of essence. the leader wasn’t interesting. she was an average person at best, so she didn’t see the point in attempting to talk about herself. “oh, good job on the debut!” and the return of her ever-so positive attitude. eunjoo was sickeningly positive even if the younger wasn’t reciprocating the energy. 

good job on the debut. sebin had heard the exact same words so many times in the past month that by now, they had lost their meaning. not that they’d meant very much to him in the beginning, anyway --- it wasn’t like he’d wanted to debut. instead of feeling grateful, he only got angrier with every reminder that yes, he is an idol now. still, his annoyance didn’t have a whole lot to do with eunjoo and he knew that he shouldn’t take it out on her. “thanks,” he responded dully, trying his best not to sound like he would rather be anywhere else in the world. “good job on russian roulette.” again, the song returned to his head. for some reason, it was all he could associate her with in the moment.

“have you...” with great effort, he finally managed to look at eunjoo again. that was a plus. but on the other hand, he was still quite nervous and irritated, so he almost forgot to continue speaking. “.... uh... have you... have you ever been here before? to los angeles. or california. or the united states. i haven’t.” absently, he took his phone out of his pocket so he would have something to mess with other than his nails. “i was thinking about going somewhere, but i’m not sure where.”

“hey, kostion boy, what took you so long?” naeun barks when sebin finally answers her facetime call. for as long as she’s known sebin, she’s always been his senior, but now that he’s officially debuted, naeun just feels like reminding him. there’s no real malice behind it, as her smile betrays. she rests her chin on her hands, laid flat against the table, her phone propped up on its pop socket - a pop socket with her own face on it, no less. “and before you say anything, i know i look tired. news flash, i am.”

“are you busy? wait, better question, are you free any day soon? i want us to hang out before we go to japan. i’ll show you the song we’re promoting over there this time.” naeun makes a disgruntled face. she rests her forehead on the table below her for a second, and comes back up with a sunny expression in her scowl’s stead. even while she’s wearing a smile on her face, naeun continues complaining. after all, there’s nothing she enjoys more than a good bitch session. “sebin, they’re making me into an anime girl.”

there’s something oddly thrilling about listening to the phone ring, watching it ring and blatantly ignoring it. it’s the same strange thrill that comes with showing up fashionably late when meeting friends or pushing off important responsibilities until the last minute. sebin thinks that it makes him seem nonchalant, unbothered --- really, it just makes him seem like an asshole. “i’m on a tight schedule these days, naeun,” he informs and while it’s true when you look at the bigger picture, it’s far from an excuse. he’d already been staring at his phone when it started ringing. “and i have better things to do than sit around waiting to pick up calls, anyway. you’re lucky to be talking to me right now. if you were anyone else, i would’ve turned my phone off.”

his facade of annoyance is hardly believable as is, but it wears off completely when she mentions that she wants to hang out. that’s one thing that sebin really, truly hates about the few friendships he has --- how embarrassingly eager he is to be around the other people involved. “i’m free on the 22nd and the 23rd. on the 24th, i’m going to l.a and i’ll be there for the rest of the month. please tell me that that works for you ‘cause i feel like this is something i’ve gotta see.” he laughs under his breath at the thought. “you? an anime girl? it must be a long process, considering what little you have to work with. you’re more like master splinter than any anime girl i’ve ever seen. but how’s that going for you? do you like it or should i fight your company for you? i’ll fight them all --- from the interns to kim dongchul himself, scott pilgrim style. just give me the word.”

if you could splurge on one new piece of clothing, what would it be and why?

“i mean, i have money, so i typically just buy whatever i want. there’s nothing i’ve wanted that i haven’t bought because of prices. but if i have to pick something, then there’s a tie-dye long sleeve shirt from thisisneverthat that i’ve been thinking about buying for a while --- the only reason i haven’t is because i don’t usually wear tie-dye. it’s a little expensive, so i guess i could say that i’d be splurging if i bought it?”

if there was one clothing brand you could work with, who would it be and why?

“i generally lean towards a more grunge, street fashion style, so... off the top of my head, maybe we11done or kichwork? either would be good, but out of those two, probably kichwork? i mean, i doubt i’d ever work with a clothing brand, so i don’t think it matters that much.”

What’s your favorite seasonal activity?

“i don’t know if there is one. i like skateboarding and playing sports in the summer, but those are things that i can do any time of the year. in the halloween season, i like to binge-watch horror and thriller movies.”

ok so u may or may not have noticed but my activity took a sharp dive this past week or so fdhvbgdf gonna keep it real... i’m going through a tough time rn and classes r starting back for me in a couple days so activity might remain spotty for a Hot Minute but i promise i will get to everything i owe asap!!! <3 @ people i was plotting with....... i promise i will message u again as soon as i feel up to it! sorry!

What is one thing you never leave the house without?

“cologne. i have to have cologne with me at all times. i personally believe that your scent is part of your identity --- if it’s memorable, you’ll be memorable, too. so i like to refresh it whenever it fades too much. plus, i’d hate to find out that i smell bad and not have any cologne handy to fix it.”

What’s the next step in your career, solo or otherwise?

“i’m not sure. i don’t even want this career, so i don’t see myself taking any steps that i don’t absolutely have to. the only thing i can see for myself beyond what i’m doing now is choreographing --- and that’s only if kmg will allow it. considering how this company likes to suck the souls out of people, i doubt they would.”
