Stingrays and zebra mbuna fish can perform simple addition and subtraction involving numbers between 1 and 5.

Several studies have shown that fish can tell the difference between higher and lower numbers. But it was unclear whether they can carry out mental tasks to add and subtract numbers from each other.

Vera Schluessel at the University of Bonn in Germany and her colleagues designed tests to work out whether ocellate river stingrays (Potamotrygon motoro) and zebra mbuna (Pseudotropheus zebra) can add or subtract the numerical value of “one” from numbers between 1 and 5.

Since Ballymena erupted in three nights of anti-migrant riots last month [June 2025], tranquility has returned to the County Antrim town. The rioters, after all, got what they wanted. They won. Dozens of Romanian and Bulgarian Roma families that fled have not returned and those that remain keep a low profile – they do not linger on the streets and are scarcely visible. The mobs who smashed windows, burned houses and battled police in order to expel Roma – and some other foreigners – from this corner of Northern Ireland see it as a victory. “That’s them away back home. Everybody is relieved,” said Leanne Williamson, 42, who witnessed, and endorsed, the unrest. “It was madness but it was long overdue. The Romanians were ignorant and cheeky. Everyone now is at peace.”

i was opening up the nature center and a little wasp flew by while i unlocked the door so i let him out. then i looked down, and there was a spider, a millipede, and two rollie-pollie bugs waiting at the door and they all walked out in a line like they’d been at a party together overnight.
