immigration story pt3
Tumblr media
His advice for other immigrants was to, “ not ever be comfortable and continue to work hard; have motivation for yourself throughout your journey, if your young go to college or some type of schooling to further your knowledge and experience. Don't come to a new place to waste time and pass up opportunities.” Regarding the politics which exist back home and the US; he felt both government systems are pointless and corrupt because they won't fully uphold their duty of upholding the people's needs before profits and power. When he first came to America he was interested in the new updates about immigration laws that were aired. During that time Bill Cliton was in office; the immigration policies he was enforcing worked out in my dad's favor. Which had influenced  him to be more lenient with democratic party. His future plans are to visit back home to Jamaica in a year's time hopefully and soon to open his own personal business. The ideas he had mentioned for his own business was a laundromat service,  vending machine with Caribbean snacks and maybe a Caribbean restaurant or even a t-shirt customized printing workshop. Another thing to call his own while making a side hobby with earning money on the side. I'm very proud of my dad and all the things he has accomplished as a person; also raising me and my siblings with the consistent discipline and nourishment of education he has instilled in each of us.

Immigration story pt 2
Tony was now 34yr years old working at a restaurant called “Golden Crust '', which was his first job being in the States. He served as a chef 7 days a week which paid him $600 per week under the table. He had worked there for about 2 months before he had walked out and quit. He explained that the owner was a Jamaican native herself but she didn't treat him with the full respect which did not create the best relationship between him and her. She had felt that he was cooking too much for the breakfast period and letting customers leave without paying which was not the case. He had expressed that he wasn't letting customers go without paying; he was fed up with the constant disrespect and misunderstanding and left the restaurant with no back up plan in mind. A month later he had gone to Manchester, Hampshire with his brother and started to help shovel snow throughout the block. Where he was receiving $25 per hour and was using plastic bags to cover his hands and shoes against the freezing temperatures during the winter. He described the weather as nothing like back home and the cold was extremely wicked! With adjusting throughout his experience living in the United states he felt like people made it more complicated than what it actually was. He felt like the hard part was just being extremely careful with everything you do; not to mention the whole process of getting into the system to gain access to the other opportunities and government assistance. The difficult part of leaving Jamaica wasn't hard, but he did have a son in Miami before he had taken the work on the ship in Puerto Rico. He didn't leave that much family behind and never really felt out of place cause family was always nearby. He had some type of assistance along the way and was able to be comfortable because they were located in New York and New hampshire, which were the  places he had called home for the time being. He had stated that most Jamaicans have someone to lean on when coming to America. When I had asked him what had surprised him when he had first come here he had stated how peaceful it was and if you look for what you want whether it's a certain job or schooling degree you are able to find it somewhere nearby. He also emphasized that networking is very important ; having connections who can help you with achievements and the steps throughout life. For example, his second job before he had gone to New Hampshire he had worked for a family business that gave him an experience in carpentry  and house work and the way he knew about the job was through a mutual friend. This job opportunity not only had paid him $20 per hr but given him more experience with handyman work that he can take elsewhere. Barriers that he faced he described more as setbacks but still achieving …. they overall kept him in line determined throughout life. Later in 2015, he had completed the citizenship test and passed it on the very same day. During this process he had to answer 15 questions out of 100 questions that he had studied. It was a normal conversation between him and the narrator and throughout the time period he was asked the questions which took about 10 mins. He expressed that it was one of his accomplishments that he reached one of the personal goals he had in life.

Immigration story Chapter 13-Shamiya Cotiere

Dr. Howell
Sociology
Jamaica to the States :
Immigration is and will always be a topic that has an important role in society and worldwide issues. Whether these immigrants are legal or not there are many countries that thrive because of immigrants. Moving to a whole new country and making it your new “normal”. Being born and raised in a country which is a part of your identity due to the pride of the culture, language, food and environment around you,  then to be moved voluntarily or involuntarily depending on the situation can be viewed as an act of courage. Changing your whole view of life on a different side of the world is a whole new level of change and adjusting to not just a new environment but to new beliefs, new money currency communication, higher cost of living , different foods, new schooling system, transportation and the list goes on. Not to mention, the whole process and barriers that immigrants so often face such as unemployment, underemployment, being full on their own, abuse, cultural disconnection, minimal to no support from the government, and mistreatment by society. Overall every immigrant's story has their own view of barriers, highs and lows throughout the journey to get to their destination.
I had chosen to interview my father, Tony for this assignment. He was born in St. Mary, Jamaica for part of his life but had moved to Kingston , Jamaica to be with his grandmother. He had stayed in Kingston(the capital) for about 7 years and then graduated from Taurant High School at 17 years old. The community he had lived in was a close and family-like environment. Later on, he had gone to one of his first destinations out the country was in Miami, Florida and he had mentioned it was similar to home because of the nice humid weather back in Jamaica. Then he went to Puerto Rico and from there he was fully employed on a cruise line ship and served as chef. Throughout his time working on a cruise ship you can imagine he had experienced different countries such as Denmark, Russia, Paris, Greece, Bahamas and the list has gone on until the final stop was at Bronx, New York. He had always been used to traveling by himself so this experience wasn't anything new with adjusting to different environments. Due to the constant going back and forth between home and different countries he had a chronic headache illness that had developed. He had decided to stay in New York for treatment; it was cheaper to treat it in the States than to go back to Jamaica. The working wage in America made it easier to pay back the medical expenses if he was to be in Jamaica  to pay back the debit. He had support from his mother and sister throughout his treatment that was finally taken care of.

Chapter 10 Fieldwork: Class and Inequality Shamiya Cotiere
Tumblr media
Marxism is the fundamental ideology of communism; it holds that all people are entitled to enjoy the fruits of their labor but are prevented from doing so in a capitalist economic system. This is an unfair relationship as their employers make more money from it than they do. This divides society into two classes: non owning workers and non-working owners. An example of this is a known clothing/ shoe brand called Nike. Within this brand they outsource all their material overseas and by doing this it keeps their production at a low cost. With this being done they are able to focus more on quality, marketing and other factors with attracting other consumers. Nike has been accused of not providing the best working conditions for their overseas employees. It was said numerous times that their employees work in “sweatshops”, low wages and child workers in its factories while being a 29.6 billion worth company.

Weber’s theory emphasized the difference between class, status and power, and treated these as separated but related sources of power, each with different effects on social action. An example of this is women who work in government jobs for example, White men continue to dominate many categories of leadership in America. In 2016, Times colleagues reported that women made up 16 percent of board members of companies in the S.&P. 1500, less than the share of board seats held by men named John, Robert, James and William. That number has improved slightly: 19 percent of board members are now women. Women earn more college degrees than men and increasingly work in occupations that used to be male-dominated, and yet their progress to positions of power has been slowed or stalled. Meaning that women need to work harder in order to have the same success.  Survey data also reveals that women, when they do ask for a promotion, do not receive the same outcomes as men.

In Bourdieu theory, he argued children with wealthier parents benefited better in places like schools and received better resources for an education. Social class affects education because the people who are in lower social statuses are not able to afford a premier education, the necessary tools to complement a public education, or continuing education. People who are in a lower socioeconomic standing also have a harder time staying in school than people who live in a higher social status. For example, some children belong to families who cannot afford it, while others are too sick or too hungry I attend. All of these reasons trace back to poverty. The cost of providing 13 years of education for a child living in a developing country is around $1.18 a day. Poverty and education do play in hand with each other.

Family tree fieldwork - Shamiya Cotiere
Tumblr media
My mother keeps our intimate family close, and everybody else in the extended part of the family does their own thing when it comes to holidays in this present day. When we used to be close, we would have our extended family come over and enjoy meals with each other. Things have changed due to family drama and respect but for my fathers extended family they are close for the most part but its hard to come together cause of the distance between everybody. Geographic relocation is very common throughout both sides of the family since some are still back at home and some are located in New York, New Hampshire, Maryland and Florida. Within my mother's side of the family there's a lot of females throughout the tree. My grandmother and my mom and I are the first born. My mom is the oldest out of 8 daughters my grandparents had back in Haiti and only 2 of my aunts have the same parents but the rest share the same dad. On both sides of the family, we don't say we have “ half” siblings because family is family especially if we all grew up together raised by the same people. Regarding my dad's side of the family… his father had 14 kids by the age 21 and was sadly shot and killed in Jamaica, but still to this day my dad continuously finds other people that may be connected to him and his other siblings just because nobody really knew how many kids he had while he was alive. My dad himself has 12 kids and I'm the oldest out of the 4 children from my mom's side. The 8 other children my dad has have different moms and were raised in Jamaica. Some had migrated to the US and speeded all over the country and 4 of them are still currently living in Jamaica. Overall, my family is very big, and it will continue to grow. Personally, I would like to add to our family tree in the future when I'm financially and emotionally ready. I would want an even number of kids either 2 or 4 just because the powerful bond and love that comes from siblings is rare and genuine. That's very important to me since I was raised to be close with my siblings and put them as a priority.

"Culture" to be continued...-Shamiya Cotiere
With the question if my household embraced American Nationalism I would say no not to the fullest extent. We do celebrate Labor Day and do events when we have no school or work. We are not at all patriotic and we won't fully represent this country as our own. Yes, we live here, and both of my parents got their citizenship as American citizens, but they still represent their country back home. One of the American traditions we uphold is celebrating certain holidays by following the American calendar. For example, Mother's Day here is May 21 and in Jamaica it's May 8th and it's not a public holiday like it is here. Also in Haiti, Mother's day is always celebrated on the last Sunday of May. Another American tradition that we incorporate is watching American football games. Both of my parents had lived in America since the 2000s. My dad had came here from St. Mary, Jamaica and he only had his visa until he had married my mom on August 23 in 2007. Before he came to the US he worked as a travel chef on a cruise ship. With that job he was able to travel to many places around the world and his last stop was New Hampshire where He had met my mom. My mom had come here from Port-au-Prince, Haiti and she had come with a green card that she had received through her father in February 2000 at 22 years old.  She knew that she would be leaving behind a part of her family but knew that opportunities for a better life outweighed her feelings for her family She had later filed and gotten her citizenship in 2008. She had worked as a factory worker until she was able to go to nursing school. With the language barrier with my mom, she had learned English in the first few years of her being In America, but she was able to pull through the obstacles with her having English as a first language. She later graduated and became a LPn. Both parents had decided to move to Lancaster, PA in December 2007 with me and my sister. I was 4 yrs old at the time not remembering much from New Hampshire. My parents had my two other brothers in Pennsylvania. Within the household I was taught to speak Creole when my grandmother and aunt had lived with us due to the horrific hurricane that occurred in Haiti in 2016. Since they had moved out in 2018 then I haven't really spoken Creole as much. Everyone in the family does understand the language when my mom so often goes back and forth from speaking English and Creole except for my dad who can pick out certain words and figure out what she had meant by using the context of the situation. Within the food aspect in our family as you can imagine we eat a variety of foods. Some of my favorite dishes that my mom makes from her home country are Poul Nan Sos (Haitian Chicken in Sauce), Soup Joumou (Haitian Squash Soup) and Haitian Spaghetti (Espageti). Some of my favorite dishes my dad makes from his home country are beef patties, johnny cake, jerk chicken, curry goat, Fish tea (traditional Jamaican soup) and the list goes on. Food is a very important aspect in our household, and it brings us closer together.

Culture- Shamiya Cotiere
My family is deeply rooted from the Islands of the Caribbean, migrating from Jamaica & Haiti to the United States; both parents having a different culture but yet are very similar. I was blessed enough to be raised with both cultures and teachings. My parents both share very similar morals and cultural values. Within a Caribbean household, they both enforce the value of respect, education, and Christianity. The first one I'd like to go in depth about is respect. Both parents are raised from a country that does not condone any tolerance for disrespect and as well as valuing your elders. For example, as a young child I wasn't able to answer with “what” or use any profanity around my parents, still today that remains the same. Another example is when entering the house, I am obligated to greet each parent, especially my father being Jamaican with the words, “good afternoon dad or good morning dad”. It's a way of respect and being proper within my household. My mom isn’t as strict on things like that, but she still expects some form of greeting when entering the house. The next value that they both emphasize within the household is education. Since I could remember, education has been and still is an important aspect of my life because of them, especially from my dad's viewpoint. While other children would enjoy their days off from holiday breaks and the summer season, my siblings and I would be inside reading and completing math worksheets that my dad would provide. We weren't allowed to step out until we finished the amount that he required us to do. When we were allowed to step out outside the house, it would only be for a certain amount of time. Education is always a key part of our lives and a priority. The idea is that there's always more to learn and you can always expand your knowledge. There's no limit on how far education can take you and that is something that I will enforce with my future children as well. The last value I would like to go in depth is Christianity. Both parents are involved in worshiping God and making him an important part of our lives. Lately, we haven't been going to church as much due to finding one that we are fully comfortable with, but we still find ways to make him a priority. When I was a young child, it was a part of our weekly routine to get ready for Sunday school as well as bible study on Wednesdays. The attire we would have on is a skirt or a dress and with our church shoes with no jeans. Not to mention, it is mandatory that we involve God in the blessings we receive and that all the Glory and happiness comes from him. One tradition we have incorporated is during Thanksgiving, Christmas and especially New Years we go to church or have a prayer session. During New Year's eve especially we pray for the upcoming year for safety, good health and blessings along the way during the upcoming year.

Racism- Shamiya Cotiere
1.Colonialism:
Tumblr media
In the book it states  that colonialism became the centerpiece of European global economic activity, combining economic, military, and political control of people and places to fuel Europe’s economic expansion and enhance the European position in the emerging global economy.” Europeans constantly taking over countries, stealing resources, goods and taking people away from their culture still have a long lasting effect. Within the image above it's a tweet from one of my favorite Pan-Afrikanist speakers, he mentions how colonialism has an extreme effect on black peoples state of mind and self awareness; it has been limited due to colonialism and europeanization. Starting off from the Alantic slave trade which was detremetial throughout  black history , it has created a space of uncertainty and self belonging. Many black people only know their roots being an American and they are labeled as “African Americans”. Many arent aware of their truest roots has an individual before slavery. Due to imperalism, colonization and the aftermath of slavery. Not to mention this also has a strong hold on what we deemed to be beautiful- this is where colorism stems from, The idea that the more light skinned and loose textured hair as an individual  is beautiful, and the more melanin and coarser hair you have is not attractive or the lower end of the stick. This is one of the ideologies that Europeanization and colonialism has created and itt still put into practice in the black community.
2. Microaggression
In the book it mentions that mircoagression is “common, everyday verbal or behavioral indignities and slights that communicate hostile, derogatory, and negative messages about someone’s race, gender, sexual orientation, or religion.”  The link I have provided shows a video of a female who is ranting about a microaggression comment that black females constantly hear which is, “Is your hair real?” She starts off by saying how its “very rude, presumptuous and a microaggression”. Between the lines framing that certain question is predicated on the belief that black females can't grow or style their hair in an attractive manner. That we must need fake hair to do styles cause we are not capable of growing our hair out to a certain length. This is false . There are many examples of black females having long hair and having beautiful different types of textures. She ends the video with stating that, “this is not a question that your askin non black women or women of other races . “ This statement is very true because in society it seems that it's more believable that other races don't wear fake hair and are able to grow out their hair. This question is a microaggression cause it's only for a certain group of people-black women.
3. Phenotype:
In the book it states that it  refers to the way genes are expressed in an organism’s physical form (both visible and invisible) as a result of the interaction of its genotype with environmental factors, such as nutrition, disease, and stress but people so often categorize groups of people based of their physical form. The link I have provided shows a female who is breaking down the definition of exactly the context and the truest meaning of this particular word. Many others in social media are referring that phenotype is the opposite of something that is genetic which is not true. She questions, “ How many phenotypes does it take to put someone in a race category?... Are phenotypes more important than others?” Within these questions she addresses how wrong judging someone due to their phenotype is not just. She also mentions how the history of the American census was based off of the circumstances whether you were free or enslaved and people werent self reporting has slaves and it was done for you.” Meaning that phenotypes are just caterogrize which was made by the American system to determine different topics which leads to racial profiling, steroptpyes and the list goes on.
4. White supremacy:
In the book it mentions that its the belief that nonwhites were biologically different, intellectually inferior, and not fully human in a spiritual sense. The video had started playing a previous clip of a white man stating that the “N word is just has bad has saying cracker”. Then it goes with another man explaining how these two words are not even close to being categorized and have the same effect and meaning. He states,” the word “cracker “was referenced to poor whites in shakespeare , and that the “N word” has resulted to more than 5,000 lynches of black people throughout American history and the word “cracker” has not.” He also states, how the N-word has lead to genocides and segregation, incarneation, and the list goes on and the word cracker cant relate to any of the topics he had mentioned. White supremacy is deeply rooted within  our school systems, policies, jobs, housing and the list goes on. It has equating 400 years of slavery and genocide of Black people to this gruesome word.
5.  Whiteness:
Tumblr media
“A culturally constructed concept originating in 1691 Virginia, designed to establish clear boundaries of who is white and who is not—a process central to the formation of U.S. racial stratification “the textbooks definition. Above shows a tweet by a social media user and he mentions Jeffery Dahmer, an American serial killer who is trending right now due to the Netflix series. Within the real case of this particular killer, he has experienced white privilege even with his trial and certain situation leading up to him being caught. This is a prime example how white people can get away with many things even with multiple murders and sexual abuse that other groups of color wouldn't have. With the judge stating that Jefferey “reminded of his grandson “ , steers away from the fact that he is an evil person when mentioning family, the judge was actually belittling his wrongdoings and looking at him has of a person of his own. This is wrong especially in a situation that is meant to be taken seriously and making sure that the person that is being convicted is being held responsible. White privilege allows white people to cheat the system no matter what the circumstances would be.
6. Hypodescent-
Tumblr media
In the book it mentions how hypodescent has been key to drawing and maintaining boundaries between the races since the days of slavery, when one single drop of “black blood”—that is, one African ancestor—constituted blackness. Hypo literally means “lower. With the image I had provided it's a tweet of a person mentioning that the hypodescent rule has been labeling people as just black even though one of your parents could be white or from a different race. This idea is from white supremacy that even though your half white you don't belong with that group anymore and you're automatically fully black.

Ch 2 Fieldwork Consumerism Culture
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Consumerism is in no doubt a part of everyone's lives, whether it's from spending money on groceries, medication to health insurance. Also, the need to consume for basic needs which includes hygienic and personal essentials. Which means buying products like toothbrushes, toothpaste, face wash, comb and the list goes on. In fact, we consume so much it's a part of our culture to buy until we can't buy any more, then we find other alternatives to continue to consume.  Whether it being legal or illegal this can go from owning multiple credit cards and payment plans to gambling, identity theft, cash app scams and fraud checks. The idea is to continue to consume whether you're capable of affording it or not. Not to mention, the holidays that we celebrate and practice annually that have the idea to consume such as buying gifts for Christmas or Valentine's Day for our loved ones to show our love and appreciation through materialistic items. Within consumerism culture, we may not realize more than half of the things we buy or desire at the time; are actual essentials for use in our day-to-day lifestyle. Purchasing items such as gaming consoles, upgrading to the newest iPhone, the new and improved slim flat screen tv and the list goes on.
Tumblr media
The motive in our society to consume either fills the void of not being an outcast or boosting our ego. Not to mention, to express our creativity like for example purchasing home decor to decorate a small living space. In completing this assignment, It has been brought to my attention the number of items I own, I don't necessarily need.
My understanding of a want and a need is the idea of wanting something that you lack whether it's an essential to possess or not. A need is something essential to life like water, housing, and food.
For example, a “want” regarding the items I listed was the expensive jewelry I own and the number of shoes I have. It's not necessary to own jewelry but in my case the ones I have are expensive. The amount of money that they are worth could be used for something that is essential.  The number of shoes I have is more than the average person which is 19 pairs of shoes and I currently own 23. Which means I own more than the average person and it's not necessary to have that many. Another example of a “want” from my list is me owning 10 phone cases. The reason why I have so many is because I like to accessorize the outfits, I wear with small accessories including my phone.
Tumblr media
I have also realized within the items I own I have an excessive amount of that same type of item. The number of jeans I own is more than an average person would have, which is 10 pairs and I own more than 4 times that amount. Being realistic, I don't need a variety of different colors of hoodies. Keeping it to 2-3 hoodies would work fine but, in my case, I own 20. Not to mention I have realized that some of the items I own don't need to be a specific name brand. For instance, my winter coat is branded “Northface'' and the price list ranges between $100-$250 dollars depending on the material and colors they have. If I had gotten a winter coat that's not a popular brand, I could be saving more towards that specific need of owning a coat for the winter.
Tumblr media
I also own a lot of hygienic items referring to face wash, perfume, body oils deodorants, toothpaste, and toothbrush. These products allow me to take care of my physical well-being which is essential to my everyday routine.

Key dynamics of globalization
Time space compression
Tumblr media
This is an example of time-space compression - time and distance has increased over the years and that involves ways communicating with each other. Instead of using letters or taking days to reach another person we use emails which takes seconds to go through.
2) Uneven development
Tumblr media
This is an example of uneven development- idea of rich vs poor due uneven distribution of development. Not everyone has access to technology and resources. An example of this is a high-tech computer which everyone may not have access to own or use one.
3)Increasing Migration
Tumblr media
This is an example of increasing migration- throughout time people and object migrate around the world due to various reasons. With the image I provided its an example of how migration would increase is because of war and power within the area.
4) Flexible accumulation
Tumblr media
This is an image that explains how the factory system works...with flexible accumulations owners of factories so often pay lower wages to their workers and mark items at a lower rate to gain more profit.

Making Hair Gel unfamiliar. -Shamiya Cotiere
History:
Tumblr media
There's always a story about a specific item or person which exists but there's only so much that we are familiar with. The original narrative of what's already been discovered about hair gel is that it starts in Africa with ancient Egyptians in 3500 B.C. There are records of mummies having fat-based gel in their hair upon discovery of their tombs. Gel has been used throughout history since then to style and keep hair styled over long periods of time. The Analysis of hair fibers identifies the popularity of a fat-based hair styling gel that was used to keep hair in place in both life and death. Most gels were made from tree sap or animal fat, which is very different from gels made today. This isn't surprising because Egyptians are well known for setting the blueprint and having a big role in the creation and advancement of civilization. As well as, cosmetology products and habits that we still use today. It was invented for hair utility and fashion almost a century ago. The different types of styles have changed over the years due to trends and fashion statements . The main purpose for hair gels has never changed, and it keeps gaining popularity with the diverse range of types of hold and catering to different types of hair types, from coarse & thick, specialized formulas on color-treated hair, and the list goes on. Also mentioning the main types of hair gels used today range from gels, liquid spray, pomades, wax, creams and serums--all using oil, wax, or petrolatum to give it a sleek and easily styled appearance, and all containing different amounts of from mild- to strong-hold.
Before hair gel was more developed and being popular,  men before would use other substances such as petroleum jelly, corn oil and macassar oil. In Birmingham, England, in 1929, a company called “Chemico Works'' decided to market a product called “Brylcreem” in 1928. Chemico Works was known for creating strong kitchen and household cleaners. It was also used to keep combed hair in place. It was the first hair gel on the consumer's market. The appeal behind it was that the consumer puts a little of the product between his palms, rubs them together, and you can style your hair however desired. Purpose was for the gel to comb the strands of hair in place. While the end resulted with a clean shiny appearance. Hair gel became more popular in the 1980s when stiffer hair styles came into play. After gaining popularity throughout England and Europe, it moved to North America and quickly spread as a fashionable product for hair styling. Men and women used it, and Chemico Works developed different types of hair gels specific for genders. Over the years, other companies started for the purpose of selling hair products to the majority, and the market evolved to what it currently is today.

Where was your item made or manufactured?
Tumblr media
Depending on the gel brand it can be manufactured from a range of different places throughout the world. To be more specific, in my case I'll be focusing on the brand “Eco style gel”. This gel was manufactured by Ecoco and they have over 10 brands of gel in their range. This hair styler is manufactured in the USA and it has a dimension of 3.74 x 3.74 x 3.94 inches. With 1.04 pounds of weight, it feels very weightless. Water (aqua), Carbomer and Hydrolyzed wheat protein with Glycerin and many mare items have been used as the manufacturing ingredients of this hair styler. The ingredients this gel also contains is  100% pure Olive oil. Water (Aqua), Hydrogen, Amino-2, Wheat protein, and fragrance.

In the 1920s, hair gel was originally constructed by an emulsion of water and mineral oil, and thickened with a type of wax, such as beeswax. Currently, hair gel also consists of different fragrances, calcium hydroxide, magnesium sulfate, stearic acid and BHT. Cationic polymers are the main component of hair gels, as the polymer's positive charge causes it to stretch and make the gel more flexible and useful. As you can see how some of the materials have stayed consistent and also have improved over time due to the technology and research with the ingredients and different hair types.

Within the reviews former employee(s) had stated ..“It's dysfunctional. The owner was so belligerent to me. I also witnessed verbal attacks on MANY others. In my opinion, the owner is a joke. What he's doing appears to be legal but lacks any moral or ethical basis.”- Former employee within the marketing department. An employee who currently works there has remarked that, “ Ecoco is a friendly and organized workplace. I’ve been working here almost three years, and I’m really enjoying it. Also, Ecoco has a diverse environment. It’s a great opportunity that you can learn from.” Another employee had stated. “"if you want low pay, stress 24/7 and lack of motivation every work day, then this company is right for you. They lie constantly Not understanding how the family is run by the family and the family doesn't know how to run the business. They fire people constantly, sometimes without write ups or warnings They play favorites They are not understanding people. I've been offended multiple times. HR is brainwashed.”- Former designer employee. Lastly another employee who had worked there in Nov 2019 has also mentioned, “I worked for the company when they hired a consultant to coerce "positive" reviews from employees. Don't believe a single good review here. The owner is an abusive, racist, misogynist whose inept children were recently put in charge of the brands. The pay is poor, the office culture is miserable, and the 'management' is delusional, unprofessional and entitled. In 15 years in marketing/advertising, it is the worst job I have ever worked. I was asked things ranging from amoral to illegal. Nothing about this company is worth anyone's time and they will probably be out of business in another 5 years.” With reviewing these remarks, it's upsetting to see how the company's workers feel and are treated. There's a constant pattern of referencing the company work ethic as unprofessional and they wouldn't recommend it to anyone who's looking for a job.

How did it make its way into your home?
The way it has entered my home is through the idea of consumption (the buying decision process). I went to a beauty hair supply store which holds a wide variety of different styling products. On my way to the store, I used to drive my car as a form of transportation. I had a desire to restock on my hair styling products which was my reason to shop. While being in the store, I had my mind made up already of which product I was looking for and the certain brand I normally use. When I was all done browsing throughout the store I had checked out and the cost of the Eco styling gel was $4.99. That price was okay with me because that is the normal range for gel in today's world. After I had checked out by using apple pay (form of payment); I had driven back and placed it in my dorm. The styling product was useful for me because I use it daily and it has met my expectations.

This styling product has the same effect for them that it does for me. It also depends on their hair type on how much they use it and how frequently. It doesn’t matter if you’re starting out with wavy, curly, or coily tresses, this gel helps emphasize your original curl pattern.
Within black culture it's normalized to see some type of gel in the bathroom cabinets, it's always a go to product to have nearby. You may also find a travel size in the car for on the go or for emergencies. Especially provides curl definition on different hair textures and helps hold hair in place. Not to mention, within the black community gel is a key component of maintaining any type of hair styles especially during our childhood. Hairstyles including natural hair updos like two buns, braids, twist, styling baby hairs, slick backs, retwists, cornrows and the list goes on. This styling product has and will continue to help influence other hair styles within Black culture.
