hale is asleep but anyways im forcing a headcanon that kiyoko called up yachi and asked for help making a custom design sneaker for ryuu for a birthday present or smth... bc kiyoko can’t draw but yachi can... and yachi doesn’t have the technical shoe knowledge but kiyoko does... and they collaborated and yeah kiyoko made husband shoes. anyways tanaka supremacy.

—— kuroo-san​ ,

        Kuroo was  basically  used   with  her  coldness  ,  It’s  a  part  of   her  that  he  liked  so  much ;  that   he  knew  that  if  shimzu   acted  the  opposite,  kuroo would  immediately  assume  she  was  having  a fever.   But   the   decline  to  his  request   made  him  give  a  small ‘ ack ‘ –   hand   placed  on  his   heart  ,  &   the   feline   made   a  sad   pout.  “ ひどい！！  これがこいびとへの接し方なのか？ “

          “  そう。”  that’s exactly right. it’s especially true when that certain someone is playing up the act for a bit of drama ... shimizu is more inclined to offer kisses at random , at seemingly inopportune times , and in private. not when her book is being held ransom for one.  “  ね、教科書を返して。”

competition.

based on her experience in track and field, one could probably assume that shimizu is used to competition. most track and field activities are structured like races, and hurdles ( her specialty ) are, as well. she’d probably be pitted against 4-5 other runners and asked to COMPETE for the fastest time. however, i think that shimizu is a bit different than other track and field athletes in the fact that she doesn’t seem attached to competition and victory.

this then translates into how she views the volleyball team, since i mentioned in a post earlier that she’s more of a realist than an optimist / pessimist and she appreciates that there are more important lessons to be learned from sports than there is a need for victory.

i like these few panels from chapter 232 ( warfront ). to go into a tiny rhetorical analysis ( because i don’t want to bore ), the choice of imagery here suggests that shimizu pays attention to the small details of track and field : the hurdles, the course, and the sky. there’s no reference to other teammates or competitors ( their shoes, bodies, hands helping her up, any in the background, etc. ), so i can only assume that shimizu is detached from the element of COMPETITION against others. she instead enjoys track and field as a more independent activity, reminiscing over the small details of hurdles, tracks, and skies that were most important / memorable to her.

word choice-wise, shimizu never mentions any sort of FAULT with herself when she doesn’t clear the hurdle. her statements are very distanced and almost apathetic, like “this would probably happen, and it did, simply put.” she doesn’t mention that she tripped because her foot caught or she didn’t jump high enough / run fast enough. instead, she focuses on the facts of what happened and the realization of that when she finally lands.

i think this suggests that her relationship with track and field was never based on competition or trying to become a better athlete to win things. she recognized that she liked running, so she did it despite the consequences of falling and getting scuffed up. she doesn’t get caught up in focusing on her teammates / competitors, nor does she think too hard about what she could have done better to WIN.

this then translates into her experience with volleyball, where she continues not to focus on the idea of WINNING, but the idea of TACKLING a challenge.

i really like these panels because they seem to exemplify that thought process clearly. shimizu acknowledges that her team may win, and they may lose, but that’s not the important part. [ in my hard copy of the manga she actually says “it isn’t like i’m expecting defeat. nor am i counting on victory. a challenge lies before me. i want to take it on. that’s all.” which i like better but i can’t scan it haha. ] what’s most important in shimizu’s mind is this idea of LEVELING THE FIELD AND TAKING ON A CHALLENGE WHEN IT ARISES. she doesn’t think too much about the results ( and seems to make this clear as well during the shrine visit with the third years when she tells them “praying to the gods won’t make you win” ), but more so what she can learn from an experience.

i talk a bit in that post i mentioned earlier about the lessons she’s taken away from being the volleyball club’s manager, and in the end i think those are the things that have become most important to her. when she talks to the third years at the shrine, and when she goes back in her own monologue to discuss the team, she seems less attached to the idea of victory and more about what the players can learn and accomplish on their own.

so … no, she’s not competitive herself, and while she probably recognizes competition in her team, she’s more likely to approach the subject as a challenge to learn from than a match that needs to be won.

i told hale already but i also need a physical record on my blog of this headcanon. anyways, after tanaka and kiyoko get married, she creates an original tea blend and names it ‘ryuunosuke’ ( because guidance from a dragon is a cool name and also coincidentally her husband’s name ... huh. how weird ). it’s sold in her family’s tea shop and she turns it into a running gag with ryuu to say things like ‘ryuunosuke is popular’ ‘ryuunosuke smells good’ ‘ryuunosuke is warm and comforting’ then watches him preen with satisfaction.

—— sawamura​ ,

DAICHI FOLLOWS SLOWLY behind kiyoko, eyes glued to his phone as he reads an article in VOLLEYBALL MONTHLY, something droning on about how good volleyball players do this and that. all things he already does. when he hears kiyoko ask for help, he’s already stopped near the door and his eyes pull away from his screen, tilting his head some in a slight bit of confusion. he blinks, slowly looking upwards finally seeing what she needed help with. ❝ mistletoe ? ❞ he asks, before looking down at her. when she asks if he is superstitious, he blushes softly, thankful for the cold air when she says she’ll give him a KISS.

now… daichi never assumed she’d give him an ACTUAL kiss, but of course, he is a teenage boy, so the thought DID cross his mind for a brief moment before she craned her neck to press her lips to his cheek. he swallowed hard, and he too was VERY grateful that his kouhai weren’t here to witness this act of perfection with kiyoko’s lips against his cheek. he WAS a boy, and she WAS very beautiful, though he would never openly show his attraction to her as the others plainly do. suga once freaked out when she held his hands during a match, only to swat at nishinoya and tanaka to leave his hands alone or they’d no longer smell like her. he wasn’t THAT infatuated. and even if he was, he had more CLASS than that.

❝ t-.. thank you, that was kind. ❞ he said, giving her a soft smile before reaching up with ease to yank off the sprig of mistletoe and toss it in the garbage by the front door inside of the club room. ❝ i wonder who put it there. ❞ he knew it was the boys, but after all, they don’t know for SURE, so theres always a LITTLE room for speculation. ❝ and why they thought they’d get to use it with you. ❞ he teased a little.

          she ignores his thanks , thinking to herself that following a tradition like kissing under mistletoe doesn’t necessarily necessitate a ‘ thank you. ’ it’s not ‘ kind , ’ is it ? it’s just a thing that people do during the holiday season ... though a much less common thing for high school students. 

          “  tanaka and nishinoya ,  ”  he must know it just as well as shimizu does , but she’s the one who says their names aloud. perhaps he’s just trying to be polite ... though shimizu doesn’t really think he needs to be. she’s never been afraid to refute them , tell them to go away , or to scold them straightforwardly. directness works best.  “  they’ve already asked me on christmas dates.  ”  and of course , she was direct in saying no.

          but that means that the mistletoe must have been a plan b. shimizu frowns , watching as sawamura removes the mistletoe and throws it away.  “  they might have extras , you know. i wouldn’t past them to stockpile a lot.  ”  or they’ll do something else. what other christmas traditions are considered romantic , she wonders ?

—— ushijima-san ,

ushijima looks down at her,   but not down upon her…      they talk little outside of their parents’ guidance,   but he is not upset with her presence   [   if there is a thread of comfort to be found in his tense body,   it is pulled free now:      something in his shoulders relaxes   ].        his face remains impassive at the request,   though his head tilts to the side in consideration.        ‘        coach says that dates distract us from what truly matters.         ’         clean and precise,  because he is very good at repeating other people’s words.       ‘      but i would like to get tea with you.       ’

          shimizu disagrees , though she’s always been a bit strong-willed despite the way she looks. lots of things matter , after all—— family , school , athletics , and maybe dating , too. her lips press into a thin , tight line , and as shimizu considers her words they begin to ease.  “  going for tea on a non-date is just as distracting. it makes no difference what you call it.  ”  at least , for him , it probably doesn’t make a difference.  “  i’d still like to call it a date , though. unless you know you don’t like me.  ”

          —— in public ? shimizu resists the urge to stand up and simply walk away from him , settling for a frown instead. the book is pulled out from under her eyes , and when she looks up , all she can see is kuroo-san’s smug grin. it makes her frown harden.  “  残念。あげたくない。”
