This has definitely been done before but

SPAMTON'S [$&#!]ING SPEECH PATTERN!

In this, I will discuss the following things

The overall pattern to his speech

Swears and censoring

What does the implemented [[eye-catching t3xt!]] actually mean

His link to Gaster + similarities in speech

His link to Spambot messages

[[HyperlinkBlocked]]

So, let's get into it :3

Spoilers for all DR content ahead

As we all know, Spamton's a weird one. Always going on about how he wants to be a big shot and give you that sweet [[HyperlinkBlocked]]. How he talks feels crazy at times. It's like trying to read the script of a shakespearean play.

His speech pattern has been mostly broken down by the fandom, but there's still gaps that I feel like people miss or don't particularly understand. So I'm here to clear those anomalies up (hopefully... my wording can be weird, so it may not make sense.. sryyy (^^;))

To start off: The gaps in dialogue

This isn't that consistent with his speech. From what I can tell, he hasn't spoken to anyone in a WHILE, which caused him to stutter his speech as he had to warm up his vocal cords (or voice box, if you're a fellow 'Spamton is a puppet' enjoyer).

However, this is actually consistent with 3 aspects to his character.

1. actual spambots do sometimes have massive gaps between pieces of text, fitting Spamton perfectly

2. Spamton actually misses words at points. Whilst not leaving gaps, the glitching in his speech leaves out sm key words, which we can see here

3. It kind of. sort of. aligns with Gaster in a way. Obviously, we, the player, can see the separate lines of text that form Gaster's poetic like speech, however, Spamton might not have, and could only hear the gaps between each line (I'll talk more abt this later, I sound mad atm)

I wish this was more consistent in his speech as it would fit him perfectly, but alas 😔😔

Next: his spelling

Now, this is a consistent aspect in both the Japanese and English translation. I only have the English one here, where he commonly misplaces 'I' with '1', 'E' with '3', 'A' with '4', and 'Special' with 'Specil', but in both, this theme of mispelling remains prevalent – making it core to his character

I don't see this mentioned in much fan content regarding Spamton (maybe the specil, but that's the limit), namely because there doesn't seem to be a real pattern regarding the 1's and the 3's. Being quite sporadic, it's obvious that it isn't shown as much. He mainly used this glitched letter -> number in your first battle with him, where he was trying to 'sell' you his plan

This lines up well with his spambot background. Most that try to sell people MLM schemes, or more prevalent, NSFW content, will have this type of speech (also similar to the popular 2000s typing style, which could mean nothing), so that fact it's used here when he's actively trying to sell the player something is amazing. (This also applies to the misspelling, but that's consistent throughout all his dialogue, not just when he's in salesman mode)

(note: he also has incorrect grammar in cases, like "SOMEONE LEFT [There] SOULS, [Lyeing Around......]")

Onto the pattern of his [[Funky]] implemented text

The pattern to these is that at least one of the words is what he's originally saying, and in some cases, EXACTLY what he's trying to say. They're also different to his usual speech.

That sounds odd to say, but for example: Spamton says "THEN YOU JUST GOTTA GRAB IT BY THE [[Silly Strings]]" instead of "THEN YOU JUST GOTTA GRAB IT BY THE SILLY STRINGS"

The text resides in its own emphasis and tone to the rest of the sentence, meaning that it has its own pattern. Luckily, it can be simplified into two sectors: regular dialogue and HATE. If Spamton is shouting – like REALLY shouting – the dialogue in the [[Seperate]] box is also in caps (exception to [[CRTS]] and [[DVDs]] as they're acronyms, so he isn't shouting)

Circling back to the meaning of these texts, I've found a couple of patterns and what it could mean for [[HyperlinkBlocked]]

The words are (near enough) always adverts or stolen from adverts. He uses phrases such as: "LOOKS LIKE YOU'RE [[All Alone On A Late Night?]]" and "WHY BE THE [[Little Sponge]] WHO HATES ITS [[$4.99]] LIFE"

This ties it back to him being a salesman as well as a spambot, and how he steals everything from everyone (but that's a discussion for another time)

He also uses these words in a metaphorical sense. E.G: [[Easels]], [[$4.99]], and [[Little sponge]]

He's obviously not calling Kris a sponge, nor is he actually putting a tag on the player's/Kris' life (because it would be $24.99 instead). Just simply saying, "WHY BE WORTHLESS AND HATE YOUR LIFE WHEN YOU CAN BE A CAPITALIST" (Everyone boo him now 🍅🍅🍅🍅).

In addition to the [[Little sponge]] comment, we have the DVD one "MY EYES ARE [[Burning]] LIKE [[DVDs of ANY movie at Half-pr1ce!]]". While not as common, he's directly referencing previous speech through his [[dialogue]]. There's nothin special about this, but it is interesting how uncommon it is that he'll directly talk abt smt in brackets THROUGH brackets. It's nice :3

I'll answer [[HyperlinkBlocked]] in a second, but first, a word from our sponsor! (censoring)

JUST STRAIGHT UP ASS. LET'S GO

From what I can tell, the censoring is just because Toby wants the games age rating to be as low as possible (smt smt the more accessible it is for a younger age range, the more consumers will pick up your game or whatever). It does leave us with two questions, though: "What swears can Spamton say and what's he been saying this whole time?"

1. He can say any swear

2. May I present some uncensored versions of phrases

TO [FUCK] ME OVER RIGHT AT THE [Good part]!? WHAT ARE YOU, A [Gameshow Host]!?

EVERYONE IS GOING TO PAY [5 easy payments of $9.99] UNTIL THEY'RE ALL IN THE [Disposal Area] BEGGING FOR MY [SHIT]!!!

DEALS SO GOOD I'LL [SHIT] MYSELF!

WAIT!! [FUCK] THE PRESSES!

There's a total of 18 sentences where he swears, only one is actually uncensored (MASSIVE [Ass]), and a total of 22 swears. In some cases, it doesn't make any logical sense to have the swear there, perhaps implying that when he's angry, he doesn't think about what it means for the sentence, or just sometimes mixes words up with swears.

There's a couple of other interesting cases. For example, Spamton says, "YOUR SORRY [a$$]" and "[smoking hot a$$]". This only complicates it more as this likely means that either that one [Ass] was a fluke, or he was genuinely allowed to properly swear once, and only once. This also makes the other swears intriguing as he uses '$' here to be an 'S', however, every other swear does not follow this pattern. It's obvious that they don't as I really doubt Spamton is saying Asai (Acai) here -> "THE [@$@!] TASTE OF SPAMTON"

There's a slight debate to be made about whether the censoring is exclusive to swearing. In the Spamton Sweepstakes, Spamton calls an item 'YOUR BEST [$#&*]' HEART LOCKET'. The apostrophe after implies that the word has to have an S at the end, but it also has to be 4 letters long. However, there aren't any swears that fill all of those requirements (at least, out of the ones I can think of). It also can't be anything like [Friends], which would be a nice nod to Flowey, nor can it be [Kris], for obvious reasons. So either, the short [@!@$] can actually mean any swear (like bastard for example), and the amount of censors doesn't actually mean anything but to indicate that it's a swear, or I'm just being dumb and there is an obvious word that can be used here that I'm not seeing. In addition, the ' used could be grammatically correct, and there is supposed to be an 'S' afterwards, but Spamton just has shit grammar, like Gaster does.

(additional note: Spamton says '[L@@K]' in the Sweepstakes, perhaps adding to the point that the censors aren't just for swearing, however, it could also just be because the '@' symbol looks like two eyes in the UTDR font)

On that note, what does [[HyperlinkBlocked]] actually mean?

Well, let's get some misconceptions out of the way

Spamton can say freedom and heaven, contrary to some of the popular beliefs behind the meaning of [[HyperlinkBlocked]]. It can't be about drugs because he mentions that in the snowgrave route that Noelle and Kris have been making [[HyperlinkBlocked]] all along (only in SG, you can't make [[HyperlinkBlocked]] in the main route D:)

I doubt that it means the ability to make your own choices because of two main things

1. 'I WAS ONLY EVER IN IT FOR THE [Freedom]. TO MAKE YOUR OWN [Deals] TO CALL YOUR OWN [Shots] AND SOMETIMES IN THE MORNING, A LITTLE [Hyperlink Blocked]' implying that the ability to make your own choices is different to [[HyperlinkBlocked]]

2. The only one who can actually rewrite the story is Susie. Kris and Noelle can make choices that cause a separate route to form. However, it will all lead to the same ending. Susie is the only one who can change the prophecy, as we know from the Gerson fight in Chapter 4

So then... what does it mean? Well. Let's have a look at all the dialogue that features [[HyperlinkBlocked]] and the context

BIG SHOT...

As I mentioned, it can't be the ability to make your own choices. It actually seems to be having the ability to be your own person.

Now, he does say [[Soul]] and [[HeartShapedObject]] (as seen below), but that appears to be more of a classification of what YOU are. However, [[HyperlinkBlocked]] is more connected to Kris. Not the Player.

This IS different from freedom. In Chapter 4, during the weird route, Kris beats the shit out of the player because the player is forcing them to do shit they don't want to do, but we also know that Kris and Noelle were making [[HyperlinkBlocked]]. Kris is very much not free. Neither is Noelle.

What they were doing was being their own people. Changing from who they originally were into someone else.

Kris wants to be their more laid-back self who was happier instead of being whoever the player is, and Noelle wanted to be more confident. Spamton. Wants to be a Big Shot.

He wants to be taller, confident, rich, happier, and more stable, very different from how we know him.

Spamton wanted you to transfer his [[HyperlinkBlocked]] to the disk, which causes him to leave and the shop to close as his body is now on the disk.

[[HyperlinkBlocked]] is your body. Your being. WHO YOU ARE. Spamton wants you and him to be who you really are.

Being who you are can be freeing, and arguably can be a person's source of freedom, especially as he says that he can "FEEL THAT [Smooth taste]" when you gift him the disk, referencing the common phrase "The smooth taste of freedom". I would definitely say that he is saying freedom here -> "[...] VACATIONING IN [Burning acid] WHILE YOU SOAK IN THE [Hyperlink Blocked]", but again. As part of just being who you are. Not because you changed the story, or how things are supposed to go, but because Kris would finally be themself.

Anyway, onto Gaster and his links with Spamton before I overthink about how incorrect the grammar would be for any definition of [[HyperlinkBlocked]] when it comes to: [...] I'LL GET SO. I'LL GET SO.[[Hyperlink blocked.]]

Both Spamton and Gaster talk in all caps, have spelling mistakes, repeat words (especially Very. They both really need a thesaurus, huh), and their sentences get cut off.

Some major differences are the [Cut in] text, Spamton using periods, and Spamton doesn't appear to have an issue with forgetting commas (which Gaster definitely does). As well, Gaster has a more poetic format to his dialogue whilst Spamton is just like any other NPC

One parallel in their speech is using terms and phrases associated with their job. Gaster using research/scientific terminology whilst Spamton uses business jargon

Now. As I mentioned earlier: "Obviously, we, the player, can see the separate lines of text that form Gaster's poetic like speech, however, Spamton might not have, and could only hear the gaps between each line"

I am aware that Spamton (and Gaster) can see the code and files to Deltarune and all that, as well as Chapter 4 showing dialogue coming out of the phone. Like. PHYSICALLY. coming out of the phone.

The phone dialogue seems to be something for the player to witness and isn't actually visible in the game.

Now. There's two ways we can take this. Either 'Gaster can talk, and you can audibly hear the gaps between each line' or 'Spamton can see what Gaster is 'saying', the same as how the player can see what the Knight is saying to Kris, and Spamton is trying to replicate those lines of text by creating gaps in his dialogue, and we can all rejoice with Gaster remaining mute because that's a neat headcanon'

I like the second one (obviously), but with how the game is going, and we do get to see Gaster ingame, I wouldn't be surprised if he could actually talk.
