The Iliad is so sad because:
Hector is wearing Achilles armor (which Patroclus was wearing when he was about to die) when Achilles tries to kill him.
Hector was told by Apollo that by killing Patroclus the war would end. Patroclus only tried to kill Hector because he thought it would end the war. They both were mirrors of each other!! (Both were right btw it did end the war just not in the way they hoped)
Achilles was the reason that Patroclus was out there wearing his armor and thus he is indirectly the cause of his death. So when Hector kills Patroclus and wears his armor the next day and Achilles kills Hector who is wearing the armor Patroclus was wearing it’s symbolizing/mirroring how Achilles killed Patroclus (indirectly but also directly). Sobbing.
Not to mention he’s chasing his own armor which symbolizes him chasing himself because of the rage he feels at himself for leading to his BELOVED Patroclus’ death. SOBBING.

Not over the fact that this painting was commissioned for this man’s mistress (the woman depicted in the painting) and the commissioner (the man in the left side of the bushes) is looking up her skirt (which back in their day woman didn’t wear underwear so YKNOW). How scandalous
