she had been carrying the spacesuit back from the airlock when he speaks to her in passing ,  ties face to name and name to area of study  (  dr. siebren de kuiper !   astrophysicist !  )  and stops herself in her tracks to carry on conversation .   after all ,  accepting the compliment without stopping would be considered rude .   patel has to look upwards to even meet his eye ,  a rare event ,  something she might even appreciate .   

“ oh !   thank you doctor … ”   she trails off with a visible grimace ,  rubbing the back of her neck as she does so .   she’s seen his name written ,  read his papers ,  but she hasn’t had the chance to hear anyone  say it  yet ,  which means she’s going to have to suck it up and make an error .    “ de kuiper … ”   the tone comes across more as a question ,  and she has no doubt BUTCHERED the pronunciation ,  which was what she was afraid of .  patel is going to think about it for the rest of the day .   the heat in her face has no doubt translated into a visible blush that reaches right to the top of her ears .   when did this conversation get so awkward ?   she better move past it quickly .

“ it was nothing ,  really .   just some debris that knocked one of the satellites out of place .   anyone could have done the job just as well . ”   patel offers a smile ,  but quickly remembers the suit in her hand ,  lifting it up as if to show siebren .   “ i have to get this back to the holding …   but afterwards …   can i get you some tea ?   i have some things i’d like to consult you on . ”
