as one of these aformentioned teens™, I can confirm. chess has transcended all social groups. pretty much everybody plays chess in some capacity. to such an extent that you get made fun of if youre bad at chess. its supposed to be classic nerd stuff but now some streamer played chess and now thats what everyone does for the past month or two. the kids that used to slack off with tiktok or whatever are now religiously on chess.com or messing with chatgpt. its gotten to the point that my school had to ban chess dot com on the wifi. but instead of curbing the problem, it got worse and now everyone has a vpn. the teachers tried to discourage it but quickly found out the chess beast couldnt be tamed. my history teacher, bless his heart, found out and tried to be hip by connecting chess to medieval europe's political system. instead, the class just devolved into a discussion of different chess strategies. there is no end in sight to the madness, one must simply castle and hope for it to phase out

one fun thing about being a teacher in march 2023 is that chess is a literal epidemic among teens. we are starting to have meetings about how we can STOP teenagers from playing too much chess which is like if we were trying to figure out how to stop them from reading for fun. When i was in high school five years ago chess was nerd shit only but now it is transcending every social and language barrier and is absolutely rampant. kids aren’t on their phone texting in class anymore it’s ONLY chess.com. kids are playing chess on their phones while playing chess in real life. this is still better than tiktok because at least the kids are developing an attention span from this
