Spreeha Bangladesh Celebrates International Day of the Girl Child
Tumblr media
In celebration of International Day of the Girl Child, Spreeha Bangladesh’s Adolescent Girls’ Club arranged a cultural event with a range of festivities and performances. Arranged in their community, the Rayar Bazar Slum, the intention was to reach out to as many people and spread awareness on the importance of allowing a girl child to receive an education, saying no to early marriage and working with dignity.

Poetry reciting by Tumpa, one of our AGC Club Members.
The main act was a stage play that showed the life of Ruma, a young girl who had to give up her education since her mother, left to fend for herself by her husband, thought there would be no point of Ruma being educated. Once told of how a girl could take care of the household just like a boy if given the opportunity to pursue an education and work by Spreeha’s community officers, Ruma’s mother took a chance on her daughter. Years later, it was Ruma who was her family’s bread winner and had taken her family out of poverty. That one decision by her mother had changed their lives entirely.

"I began working with Spreeha about two years ago as an English teacher for classes ranging from 2 to 8." shares Ms. Duli Dabi. "Some of my most memorable moments have been spent here painting, singing and having fun while learning with my kids. As an educator, the most rewarding experience is when you see a child transform when given education and the proper care. I am even left surprised sometimes with how fast my students learn their lessons! These kids have really changed my life and I cherish every moment with them."
Ms. Duli Dabi is a teacher at Spreeha Bangladesh Foundation's after school program. She strives each day to make a difference in the lives of those who continue to inspire her: her students.
On World Teachers' Day, Spreeha Bangladesh wishes all teachers!

"My days at Spreeha have always been hectic with one patient coming in after the next but there is truly nothing more self rewarding than building relationships with people who look to you as a guardian. I've never felt luckier to be able to give back to the community" shares Dr. Nadira Sharmim, Chief Medical Officer, at Spreeha Bangladesh Foundation, a name requested for on a daily basis at the Healthcare Center.
When asked of her best experiences, she mentions how one of her ultrasonography patients bought bags full of lichi fruit on hearing the news that she would soon be blessed with a healthy baby girl. "This was her second child after a boy and she was overjoyed".
Dr. Sharmin is one of the many diligent change makers at Spreeha Bangladesh Foundation who strive to see the change much needed in society.

Sharmin always wanted to do something for the underprivileged, but she never thought she would be working for an NGO. Her perspective of life changed when she joined Spreeha. As a Community Officer at Spreeha Bangladesh, Sharmin works on empowering slum communities by providing health, education, and career counselling. She also runs workshops on topics such as waste disposal and water conservation. Sharmin also moderates the adolescent girls’ clubs at Spreeha, a program that helps the girls develop leadership and life skills. But sometimes she has to work on tough issues like sexual abuse, which is a topic no one wants to talk about in the community. Sharmin goes out of her way to help all the girls in the club. Sharmin’s work has made her realize that she can build a career while giving back to the community.
