I like your mermaid au. I will be placing it directly into my mouth and chewing on it like a cat with plastic packing strips while you yell at me and I sprint away as fast as my messed up leg can carry me. Which is to say not that fast, but it's the effort that counts.

Also your texturing and shading is so good I literally mistook it for 3D modeling and I am EXTREMELY envious.

I'm not done with this AU, so don't run far :3

I have a question about mermaid Viktor's biology! Is his dorsal fin poisonous (it looks a bit similar to stone fish) or just bioluminescent? And how strong is his bioluminescence?

Is there a potential of Jayce actually becoming mermaid too? Gosh, this au is so exciting!

No, definitely not poisonous. I like the idea that the shimmer Viktor got from Singed had a component of Rio in it. That’s why the fin is a sort of nod to that creature. Overall, I wasn’t thinking about strong bioluminescence. He doesn’t glow any more than canon Arcane-modified limbs — just thin veins, a soft light, that kind of thing.

And no, Jayce is definitely not turning into a merman (sorry х). Maybe it sounds harsh, but I actually like the concept of their separation — where it’s not just about differing views and ideals anymore, but even their physiology sets them apart. And despite all of that, they’re learning how to connect again — almost like falling into each other all over again.

Eventually, I did consider Viktor being cured or having some hybrid form that would let him shift his tail into legs. But let’s be real, I doubt I have the energy to draw all of that xD

I’m definitely not dropping this AU, but I just don’t have it in me to tackle it in comic format over the next few months ><

One of the most reliable ways to keep your values and composition in check is by constantly checking your work in grayscale and at a tiny size. If you shrink your image down to the size of a battery and convert it to black and white — and you can still tell what’s going on — then you're on the right track. But if it turns into visual chaos or becomes unreadable, that’s a sign there are issues with tone or too many unnecessary details.

As for color — I really like working with analogous palettes and adding one accent color. I’m also a big fan of "glowies" and often try to include them in my art. Combining those techniques, you can get things like blue-purple interiors lit by warm yellow sunlight, or beige characters standing out against green backgrounds.

An accent color doesn’t always need to be the light source either — sometimes placing a cool color like blue in the shadows of a warm object (like red) can make the whole thing feel more vivid and interesting.

And one last trick that helps me a lot is "color unification." If your palette feels messy or disjointed, you can simply glaze everything with a single color. It helps pull the image together and sets the mood: a yellow glaze creates a sunny feel, blue gives an underwater vibe, and brown or grey can make it feel grounded and indoors.

Hello the last panel of your mermaid Viktor mermaid comic is going to haunt me forever how the hell do you even make colours do that?

Well, I wouldn't say it's super easy, but it's not as hard as it looks either ^^

If your piece feels boring or flat—try throwing in an extra colored light source. It could be something like a rich yellow from sunlight, a soft blue reflecting off water, or even a deep magenta like glow from a hextech core.

And if that still doesn't feel colorful enough, you can always add highlights in unexpected hues. For example, instead of plain white, try mixing in turquoise with blue, or a soft pink with light blue.
