Question de l’homme. View more ...

Tale of two cities essay quotes A Tale of Two Cities- Quotes, Free Essays
And yet there is not in France, with its rich variety of soil and climate, a blade, a leaf, a root, a sprig, a peppercorn, which will grow to maturity under conditions more certain than those that have produced this horror. A Tale of Two Cities- Quotes. A Tale of Two Cities quotes & explanation 1. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way. Explanation for Quotation 1 >> These famous lines, which open A Tale of Two Cities, hint at the novel’s central tension between love and family, on the one hand, and oppression and hatred, on the other. The passage makes marked use of anaphora, the repetition of a phrase at the beginning of consecutive clauses—for example, “it was the age . This technique, along with the passage’s steady rhythm, suggests that good and evil, wisdom and folly, and light and darkness stand equally matched in their struggle. The opposing pairs in this passage also initiate one of the novel’s most prominent motifs and structural figures—that of doubles, including London and Paris, Sydney Carton and Charles Darnay, Miss Pross and Madame Defarge, and Lucie and Madame Defarge. A wonderful fact to reflect upon, that every human creature is constituted to be that profound secret and mystery to every other. A solemn consideration, when I enter a great city by night, that every one of those darkly clustered houses encloses its own secret; that every room in every one of them encloses its own secret; that every beating heart in the hundreds of thousands of breasts there, is, in some of its imagin-ings, a secret to the heart nearest it! Something of the awfulness, even of Death itself, is referable to this. Explanation for Quotation 2 >> The narrator makes this reflection at the beginning of Book the First, Chapter 3, after Jerry Cruncher delivers a cryptic message to Jarvis Lorry in the darkened mail coach. Lorry’s mission—to recover the long-imprisoned Doctor Manette and “recall” him to life—establishes the essential dilemma that he and other characters face: namely, that human beings constitute perpetual mysteries to one another and always remain somewhat locked away, never fully reachable by outside minds. This fundamental inscrutability proves most evident in the case of Manette, whose private sufferings force him to relapse throughout the novel into bouts of cobbling, an occupation that he first took up in prison. Throughout the novel, Manette mentally returns to his prison, bound more by his own recollections than by any attempt of the other characters to “recall” him into the present. This passage’s reference to death also evokes the deep secret revealed in Carton’s self-sacrifice at the end of the novel. The exact profundity of his love and devotion for Lucie remains obscure until he commits to dying for her; the selflessness of his death leaves the reader to wonder at the ways in which he might have manifested this great love in life. The wine was red wine, and had stained the ground of the narrow street in the suburb of Saint Antoine, in Paris, where it was spilled.... View more ...

Comparison contrast essays high school vs college Practice Makes Perfect Comparison and Contrast Essay High School vs
This place equips us with the proper knowledge needed in order to survive college and other higher levels of learning. Writing is a very important aspect of people’s lives since this is one form of communicating with other people. It does not only enable you to communicate with other people that are far away but also enables you to express your thoughts and emotions through pen and paper. When you practice writing through writing activities, this drastically improves your English writing skills for the reason that I believe in a saying that says, “Practice makes perfect”. I hope that you will enjoy what I have prepared for you. Respectively yours, englcomC39tamura. Thursday, December 17, 2009. Comparison and Contrast Essay: High School vs. High school, as well as college is just another part in everyone’s lives. Almost everyone go through such a transition between two very diverse and different worlds. These diverse worlds can be compared and contrasted by everyone; however, not all are aware of the possible similarities and differences between them. The purpose of this essay is to compare the students’ high school and college life in terms of the level of academic responsibilities, time schedule, as well as the culture practiced by each student. First of all, high school is the first step to a higher level or learning. The topics being taught in high school are generalized in basic Math, Science, English, Filipino, and many other subjects. The students are more relaxed and their responsibilities are not that complicated and heavy in a sense that there are fewer requirements and their due dates are not immediate. Compared to the time schedule of college students, a high school pupil’s schedule is much more fixed because the standard call time is at 7:30a.m. Students are much more immature and need guidance in order to lead fulfilling lives. They study inside a single classroom everyday; thus having little freedom.... View more ...

why emptyness is important essay Essay on why is it important to do the right thing all the time, Yahoo Answers
This can paralyse you from taking any action at all. Essay on why is it important to do the right thing all the time?? One of the hardest things to do in life is to do the right thing. What you think is the right thing. Not what you friends, family, teachers, boss and society thinks is the right thing. What is the right thing? That’s up to you to decide. Often you have a little voice in your head that tells what the right thing is. Or a gut feeling. It might tell you to get up from the couch, stop eating those snacks and go to the gym instead. Sometimes you will put on your exercise clothes and go. Sometimes you will not. It might tell you to stop sulking and feeling like a victim with everything against you and instead look at the opportunities and take action. Sometimes you will. Sometimes you will not. Now, why should you do the right thing? You tend to get what you give. By doing the right thing you tend to get the same things back.... View more ...

Family Assessment Application of 11 Gordon’s Patterns of Family Evaluation Research Paper Doing a family assessment
What are the patient and family’s teaching needs? Doing a family assessment. It is vital to take time to assess the family’s structure and style in order to formulate an effective teaching plan. Getting to know your patient’s family and the role they will play in health care management will save a great deal of time in the long run. Treatment plans developed without input from the patient and family are often doomed to failure. As a result, the health care team spends valuable additional time going back to assess the family and often learn about strengths and barriers that were present all along. Both the patient and family members need to tell their story about the illness and the impact it is having on their lives. Try to give them time to share their perceptions about the problems the illness is causing. By taking time to listen to the patient and his family, you are building the trusting relationship that is the basis of patient and family teaching. A good family assessment requires astute observation skills and the ability to be an active listener. Assessment data can be obtained anytime health care professionals interact with patients and families. Gathering information about family structure, function, and needs does not have to be restricted to structured interviews. Anytime the family is present; you can obtain more information about the family and their role in the patient’s health care management. Informal conversations with the patient and family while you are passing medications, adjusting an intravenous rate, or giving a tube feeding can yield data that will help you complete the family picture. Table 9 shows areas of family assessment that are important to know. Learning the answers to these questions will help you immensely in developing an effective teaching-learning partnership with the patient and his or her family. Areas of Family Assessment. Who is considered part of the family?... View more ...

1993 apush dbq essay 1993 DBQ Essay, Free Essays
Those that did rebel against the says of the church were either killed or excommunicated. The three G’s: God, Gold and Glory led many explorers rushing in to the new world. Among which were New England and Chesapeake, two society of English origin. Each developed with their own distinct views and principals. New England a much disciplined, obedient society and Chesapeake much devoted to gold and glory, and both these societies were prodigiously influenced by geographical, social-political, economic and religious needs and moves. Which have had caused both these societies to evolve adversely through their own means. Economy was a crucial factor in leading New England and Chesapeake to develop incongruously. Chesapeake was vastly devoted to mining gold and exploiting for a better economy. Hence as according to document c almost all the Chesapeake settlers’ were young single men. Whereas New England had a much differentiated purpose in coming to the “New world”. The New England settlers’ came for religious freedom and creating a model city or society for the rest of the new comers, as supported by document a and b; “we must consider that we shall be as a city upon a new hill”. Thus for them to prosper and expand as an exemplary society, most the New England settlers were joint families. Both New England and Chesapeake settled and expanded in different parts of America. The land and climates in the Chesapeake and New England regions were different, so the societies grew crops which suited their area, which led to differences in their social structures. The Chesapeake area was swampy and not well suited for the typical crops; however, it was discovered 5 years after their arrival that tobacco grew very well, so the economy structured itself around the growth of tobacco. It was exported as a cash crop to England, and as a result, they had much better amends with their mother country. Also as a result of the growth of tobacco, the Chesapeake colony had a need for cheap labor to work in the fields. They developed a system of indentured slavery; in which a person got free passage to America in return for their work and slavery till the debt is paid off.... View more ...

Why are students so liberal, and older and more mature workers, employed in industry, so conservativ Millennials - Political Views Baffle Baby Boomers, Time
Almost 6 in 10 believe you can get ahead with hard work, and a similar number want a society in which wealth is parceled out according to your achievement, not via the tax code or government redistribution of income. The Secret Language of Millennials. Fifty years ago, baby boomers and their parents suffered through what was ubiquitously understood as “the generation gap,” or the inability for different generations to speak clearly with one another. A new national poll of Americans ages 18 to 29 — the millennial generation — provides strong evidence of a new generation gap, this time with the boomers (born from 1946 to 1964) playing the role of uncomprehending parents. When millennials say they are liberal, it means something very different than it did when Barack Obama was coming of age. When millennials say they are socialists , they’re not participating in ostalgie for the old German Democratic Republic. And their strong belief in economic fairness shouldn’t be confused with the attitudes of the Occupy movement. The poll of millennials was conducted by the Reason Foundation (the nonprofit publisher of Reason.com, the website and video platform I edit) and the Rupe Foundation earlier this spring. It engaged nearly 2,400 representative 18-to-29-year-olds on a wide variety of topics. This new generation gap certainly helps explain why millennials are far less partisan than folks 30 and older. Just 22% of millennials identify as Republican or Republican-leaning, compared with 40% of older voters. After splitting their votes for George W. Bush and Al Gore in 2000 (each candidate got about 48%), millennials have voted overwhelmingly for Democratic candidates in the 2004, 2008 and 2012 elections. Forty-three percent of millennials call themselves Democrats or lean that way. Yet that’s still a smaller percentage than it is for older Americans, 49% of whom are Democrats or lean Democrat. Most strikingly, 34% of millennials call themselves true independents, meaning they don’t lean toward either party. For older Americans, it’s just 10%. Millennials use language differently than boomers and Gen X-ers (those born from 1965 to 1980).... View more ...

Cause and effect essay defined Cause and Effect Essay Topics
Are the causes determined? Cause and Effect Essay Topics. Cause and Effect Essay Topics : Logical Pattern for A+ Writing. Cause-effect essays writing require special knowledge for proper text coordination. The simplest approach is to use “one idea conveys to another one”. In other words, cause-effect relationships should be built in the text telling how one event (the cause) leads to another event (the effect). Focus-on-Effects Method to analyze the outcome of a particular root. Focus-on Causes Method to analyze the origins led to a particular response. Both methods allow discussing the attitude between two events. To stay clearly focused in your essay, do not mix several causes and several effects. Coordination Check List. The cause and effect essay topics are covered mostly by means of thinking of an effect or a final result. Are the effects determined? Is the number of causes/effects determined? Is the knock-on effect possibility defined? Brainstorming is an effective way to find out the full scope of causes and effects. Your primary task is to decide the number of viewpoints to debate in your essay. Ask as many questions as you can to define as more causes or effects as possible relating to your essay topic....
