It’s still @stevesbipanic birthday in the US so this isn’t technically late if you think about it. I may or may not have watched the behind the scenes of the Me! music video for inspiration but… I hope you like! Love you B!!!! 💕💕💕
The cats were his idea.
Do they have anything to do with the song? Not really, but Eddie’s a cat guy and having an excuse to play with cats is something he’s not going to say no to.
The shelter had been all for it, eager to get the attention of the general public in hopes of finding homes for them. They’d promised to send someone to make sure everything went according to plan.
What they failed to mention is that the someone they were going to send was basically an identical replica of a Greek god.
Jeff side eyes Eddie the moment the guy walks in and he sees Grant and Gareth look his way with a knowing smirk.
Is his type really that obvious?
The guy is wearing a soft yellow sweater and he signals for them to come over to meet the cats.
“Hey, guys. Thanks so much for doing this. I’m Steve and can answer any questions you might have.”
“You single?” Grant asks, making Eddie choke on the water he’d just drank from his water bottle.
Steve laughs nervously, turning pink as he looks towards Eddie. “Depends on who’s asking.”
“That would be the gay one.” Gareth chimes in, pointing in Eddie’s direction, which earns him a glare.
Steve giggles before turning to open one of the kennels, pulling out a small white and black kitten and making his way over to Eddie.
“Can I have you hold this little guy?”
Eddie’s jaw drops as he carefully takes the kitten from him, bringing him in close to his chest.
“Oh my god.”
Steve turns away for a moment to check on the others and to introduce the band to the rest of the cats.
Eddie’s completely head over heels for the kitten the longer he holds it.
Steve comes back a minute later, Eddie barely noticing as he waves around a small string for the kitten to play with.
“Looks like he likes you.” Steve says gently, catching Eddie’s attention.
“Is he… is he available?” Eddie asks, stroking behind his earsz
He smiles and nods as he squats down next to him, reaching out to pet the kitten softly. “He is.”
Eddie holds the kitten closer as he goes wide eyed, looking over at his band mates.
“Can I?”
“Of course. Have a name in mind?”
Eddie looks down at the kitten for a moment. “Ozzy.”
Steve chuckles, “Like Ozzy Osbourn?”
“Wow, you know your musicians.” Eddie smiles.
“My brother loves him. You guys are actually his favorite band though.”
“Really?! What’s his name?”
Steve takes a seat, finally getting out of his squat that he’s been holding for the last minute. “Dustin. I’ve kept the whole ‘helping with the music video’ thing quiet cause he’d kill me if he found out.”
“You should’ve just asked him to come!”
“Tell you what. What if we make him cat sit this little guy and go out for a drink together later?” Steve replies.
“I-I’m cool with that.”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah. Here, give me your phone and I’ll put my number in.” He says, reaching out towards Steve as he lets Ozzy roam for a moment.
Steve puts his number in and leaves to do his job.
Eddie picks Ozzy up again as he moves to a nearby couch.
“Ozzy, your sisters are going to love you. Maybe not at first, especially Liv, but they’ll both get over it…”
He continues to coo at the kitten until Wayne finally makes his way on set.
“Hey, kid. Great work today.”
Eddie beams up at him, one hand still reached out to play with Ozzy. “Isn’t he just perfect? This one is so special. I had to keep him.”
Wayne chuckles softly, “Seems like a good one. Looks like you may have got more than a new pet today too.”
Wayne nods his head towards Steve which makes Eddie’s cheeks turn pink.
“Yeah we’ll have to see how that goes.”
“Who knew filming a music video could change your life huh?”
“Still too soon to tell, old man.”
Steve looks over his shoulder then and waved towards them, Eddie shyly waving back as Wayne laughs.
“Whatever you say, Ed.”
-
Wayne was in fact right and it did change his life. Ozzy was the ring bearer at the wedding the next year.

Pin The Tail On The Donkey
written for @steddiemicrofic March prompt: pin and to celebrate the wonderful @stevesbipanic birthday! Sorry it's so short B, I forgot you're a day ahead of me and planned to write tomorrow lol
wc: 388 | rated: T | cw: none | tags: established relationship, roommate Robin Buckley, It's Steve's Birthday, fluff, both boys are menaces, platonic stobin
“Is this really necessary?”
Balloons of various sizes litter their living room floor (“Blowing them up is harder than it looks, okay!” Robin had defended when he pointed out the small, barely blown-up pile in the mix). A small pile of haphazardly wrapped gifts takes over their coffee table (“I couldn’t find the scissors,” Eddie pouts when Steve zeroes in on the jumbled mess that is, no doubt, Eddie’s present).
The piece of resistance, and the bane of Steve’s existence though, is the childish party games prepped and ready to go. Every chair in the house is arranged in a circle near Robin’s boombox lying in wait until the rest of the party guests arrive. An overflowing pinata sits amongst the mix, and a stupid, tail-less donkey picture crookedly hangs on the wall. Eddie and Robin are standing beside it — Eddie holding the blindfold and Robin with the sticker tale, both waiting for Steve to indulge their childish whims.
“It’s absolutely necessary. Dire even,” Eddie says, stalking over to where Steve sits stubbornly on the couch. “No boyfriend of mine is going to go another year without knowing what it’s like to pin the tail on the donkey.”
Steve shoots Robin a ‘help me’ glance, but all he gets is a shrug in return.
“Nope! I told you when you started dating him I was not getting involved in your guys’ nonsense.”
“You literally helped him set this whole thing up!”
“Well, yeah. It is your birthday.”
“Come on, Stevie,” Eddie whines, jutting his lip out and giving Steve those irresistible puppy dog eyes. “Just one time. I’ll even help you put the blindfold on.”
Realization dawns on Steve in an instant. “So that’s what this is really about,” Steve smirks up at his conniving boyfriend before pushing himself off the couch. He takes two steps forward, closing the distance between them before lowering his lips to the shell of Eddie’s ear. “Baby, if you wanted me to wear a blindfold all you had to do was ask.”
Robin gasps from across the room, dropping the sticker tail. “You tricked me!”
“I didn’t mean to,” Eddie says, shooting Robin an apologetic look over Steve’s shoulder, before focusing on the man in front of him. “But I’m definitely not complaining at the change in plans.”
“Neither am I.”

Happy anniversary to my Ides of March ficlet that became a whole fic!!
Ok some people actually asked for a fic so here it is the March 15th Steddie fic.
Let it be known that Eddie Munson is drama kid.
Every play and musical that Hawkins High put together he was in, he even played Romeo in his junior year. He had 24/7 access to the drama room which he of course used for Hellfire and took great joy in using the props for his campaign, especially the throne.
Being a drama kid meant he had access to their old costumes too, this came in handy for Eddie's more public displays of goofiness. Eddie loved history and he loved making people laugh so it was no surprise to the Hellfire boys when on the 15th of March Eddie showed up in a full Roman getup complete with toga and laurel wreath.
Eddie had giggled to himself when he showed the boys his prop knife and told them his plan to "stab the emperor". He had just finished telling them when his victim came round the corner.
"Emperor Steve your rule of tyrany is over." Eddie cried as he jumped in Steve's way and "stabbed" him.
Steve blinked at Eddie and for a moment Eddie thought how annoying it'll be to get blood out of the toga when Steve punches him. Much to Eddie's suprise however, Steve giggles.
Eddie doesn't think he's heard a more adorable sound and it certainly didn't help to quell the metalheads crush on the jock.
"Oh no! Eddie how could you betray me this way, my closest advisor!" Steve plays along, Eddie blushes at Steve even remembering his name, his first name at that, the jocks usually call him Munson when they shove him around.
"Sorry Stevie but it had to be done, you're too pretty to have so much power." Eddie flirts pushing his luck.
"I knew my looks had an effect on you, Eds," Steve winks as he fake dies before laughing and continuing his walk down the hall.
Eddie was half frozen in shock at Steve flirting back that Gareth has to slap him back into reality.
"Dude was Harrington flirting with you!?"
"Boys, I think I've been murdered myself."

For the lovely @withacapitalp happy birthday Liam hope you have the best day today!!!!
Steve had been pacing around the apartment all morning. Well, pacing wasn't really the right word, Eddie would describe it more like having the same zoomies their cat Toothpaste has at 3am.
You see today was–"It's Robin Day, Eds!" As his lovely boyfriend had practically screamed in his ear at 5am. "And it will still be Robin day when you return from your job at a normal waking hour, babe."
Eddie had hoped the jog would've gotten some of the energy out of Steve's system but he seemed more hyper on his return, at least he'd brought Eddie coffee.
"Love, Robin isn't even on the plane yet."
"I know, but it's today, Eds."
Steve looked so bright it made all of Eddie's sleepiness fade away. It had been hard, living away from Robin. They'd all shared an apartment when she went away for college but by the time she got a job in New York, Steve and Eddie were not only dating finally but settled into Chicago life.
They spoke every day of course, Robin and Steve never missed a nightly catch up of the day's events, Eddie didn't even know what they'd talk about once they were in the same state again. Eddie knew Robin would always be Steve's number one and he loved that about him.
There was one other thing about today though. "Sweetheart, you know it's not just Robin Day, right?"
Steve looked confused at his boyfriend, kind of like the way a puppy looks when you move his toy.
"What could be more important about today than that."
Eddie began humming a specific tune wrapping his arms around Steve's waist. "Oh, right, my birthday, 24 isn't exactly a big deal Eds," Steve said rolling his eyes.
Eddie laughed, "Your birthday is the reason Robin's coming, sunshine, plus after the number of times we've both almost died I think every birthday is a big deal."
Steve nodded his head and returned the embrace Eddie had been giving him, "True, you think you're gonna have a quarter life crisis in August, Mr 25?"
Eddie grinned, "Oh yeah, I think imma buy a guitar and start a band." Steve laughed, while Corroded Coffin never got famous they got relatively well known in the local scene, Tuesdays were now a regular gig at The Squire downtown.
"Four hours til she lands," Steve said kissing Eddie's cheek and running upstairs to make sure the guest room was ready for the tenth time. "Still not on the plane yet!" Eddie called up laughing.
Four and a half hours later their loving room was filled with laughter and joy once more. "And then the guy asked the flight attendant for another ginger ale and Steve this man was looking green and you know how I don't deal with sick people well I'm surprised I survived the flight at all," Robin rambled filling Steve in on her flight from hell.
"Honestly, you should just move back here, save yourself the flight," Steve joked. Robin glanced at Eddie, one little birthday surprise they hadn't told Steve yet.
"Actually, my contract is ending in two weeks, and um, they offered to extend it at...their Chicago office."
Steve was frozen, if Eddie didn't know better he'd think Vecna had returned from the dead to finish them off after all these years. Then the screaming started.
"YOU'RE MOVING BACK TO CHICAGO!"
"I'M MOVING BACK TO CHICAGO!"
Pretty soon everyday would be Robin Day and with his boy looking that happy Eddie wouldn't want it any other way.

Pierce My Heart
@steddiemicrofic prompt: pin, WC: 388, rating: G
"Ouch!" A dribble of blood trickled down Steve's finger, the pin of the needle had pricked him. Steve stuck the top of his finger in his mouth, the metallic taste of blood reminding him of darker days. The blood stopped quickly but he still got up to grab a small bandaid for the wound not wanting to risk getting any blood on the fabric he held, it had been a bitch getting it out in the first place. This was the fourth small stabbing of the afternoon.
"Stevie?" He heard from the door, shit when had Eddie gotten home? His shift wasn't supposed to end til...Steve glanced at the clock how was it four already.
"Um, in here!" He called trying to hide the garment behind him, a useless effort since as soon as Eddie saw him he wrapped his arms around him pulling him into a hug. "Hi, baby, I missed you," he said kissing Steve's cheek, "Hang on, what're you hiding?" Eddie made a grab at the ball of denim but Steve quickly held it out of his reach.
"Nothing!"
Eddie gave him an amused look, "Sunshine I know my vest when I see it, why have you got it, oh no don't tell me you were wearing it again and spilt stuff on it," he laughed, "Did you miss me that much, love?"
"No," Steve pouted not wanting to be teased about the time he was in fact wearing it because he missed Eddie and had spilt a whole milkshake on himself, that had been almost as hard to clean as the blood.
"Then what were you doing?"
Steve was caught, there was no way out of it, at least he was almost finished so he didn't feel too defeated showing his boyfriend what he'd risked his poor fingertips for. He held up the vest displaying the smattering of red thread on the left side, hidden between buttons and patches.
"Baby," Eddie said with awe in his voice, "You sewed this for me?" A small red heart with 1987 stitched haphazardly in the middle, the year they got their shit together.
"Pricked myself a few times but I wanted you to be able to take me with you when you go on tour next month, can't forget me, rockstar."
"Impossible, Stevie, you're my heart forever."

@steddielovemonth Day 29: Love is going out of your way to do something you know will make them happy @forgottenkanji
Tumblr media
Eddie knew a lot of things about Steve. He knew he loved peonies more than roses and listened to folk music when he cooked. He knew he loved sledding in the winter and lake days in the summer. He knew every step of his hair care routine and loved head scratches the most. Above all he knew Steve loved Valentine's Day.
He remembered how Steve would always make sure every girl got at least one rose delivered to them in home room and loved decorating his locker. Always wrote his classmates cards to fill their love boxes and made sure the kids got plenty of chocolate. Watched some special girl get taken on a perfect date each year, wishing for a world it could be him.
He remembers there being no dates last year, Steve looking as forlorn as him. He would find out a couple months later it's because the golden boy had been harbouring an equally massive crush and they promptly got together.
Now this year he vowed to go all out for his sweet boyfriend and give him the Valentine's Day he deserved.
"Eddie you hate Valentine's Day."
"You said it was capitalist bullshit."
"You literally burnt a bouquet once."
Eddie glared at the other Hellfire boys, he'd asked them to the diner to help him plan the best day ever not be attacked.
"That was the old Eddie, a sad gay little teenager, adult Eddie has the prettiest boy in the world to please."
Jeff was looking at him fondly while Grant rolled his eyes and Gareth gagged.
"EW don't call my cousin pretty!"
"We literally perform a song where I do just that."
"GOLDEN GODDESS IS ABOUT STEVE!"
"Hush, Garebear, we have plans to make."
The plan began simple, Robin was to take Steve out for breakfast, well, Steve take her out after she begs. Convincing Robin of the plan was easy since she loves Steve and free food as much as Eddie.
Then, while the boys set up the final surprise, Eddie would meet up with Steve at the arcade with the kids.
"Can't wait til we're home and alone, Eds, nice to have someone on Valentine's Day again."
"Just you wait, sweetheart."
Max would then radio Steve asking him to drive her to the movies for her date (although she was refusing to call it that again) with Lucas. She was also easy to convince, liking free rides.
Eddie would quickly change and rush to Steve's apartment to make dinner, he'd told Max to delay getting ready til Steve got there to stall him. He figured he'd have just enough time before-
Eddie was only halfway through making dinner before he heard the keys in the lock. No, Steve was home early, the candles weren't even lit yet!
"Eddie?"
He felt caught and dejected, all his plans falling through his fingers.
Steve glanced around the apartment, rose petals and unlit candles and the dining table set for two with a bouquet of peonies in a vase. Steve's favourite, spaghetti bubbling away behind Eddie.
"Eds, did you do all this for me?"
There's a certain awe in his voice as he asks. Eddie turns, turning down the heat on the pot and steps towards Steve. He takes his boy's hands gazing at him softly, "Of course, sweetheart, you love Valentine's Day. You're always so busy making it special for everyone else, and you missed last year, I wanted you to get wooed for once."
Steve's eyes are a little misty but he's smiling so Eddie knows he's not upset, "You got home early tho, baby, I haven't even lit the candles or turned on the music," Eddie explained biting his lip softly.
"I'm guessing Max was meant to keep me busy? You didn't tell Sinclair and his mom picked her up," Steve laughed.
"Shit, I knew I forgot something."
Steve kissed his cheek, "I'm going to get changed, think that'll be enough time for you?"
"Knowing you'll take forever with your hair, yeah I'll be ready, angel."
Steve flicked him playfully, "Oi, you love my hair."
Eddie yelped but smiled coyly, "Love messing it up too," he said winking.
Steve blushed and went to his bedroom to change. Eddie quickly finished the food, turned on the radio and lit the candles hoping it all set a romantic mood. Like clockwork he plated the food just as Steve returned to the room.
"Smells delicious, baby, you made my favourite!"
Eddie helped him into his chair, playing up the gentlemen's act, "Anything for you, sunshine." He poured them wine and laughed together as Eddie explained the whole plan, including Gareth's protest which Steve's giggled at. They were now cuddled on the couch, not really watching the movie, more just looking at each other occasionally trading soft kisses.
"Thank you for today, Eds, it really means a lot."
"I want to make every day special for you, Stevie."
"I wanted to ask you something, was going to ask on our anniversary but no-one has ever seen me the way you do."
"You know you can ask me anything, love."
Steve took Eddie's hand, glancing down and playing with his rings, a habit Eddie knew he did when he was nervous, "I wanted to ask if you wanted to move in with me?"
A smile quickly crept across Eddie's face, thought about getting to come home everyday to Steve and wake up every morning to him. Thought about how home had become the boy sitting across from him, wherever he went Eddie always wanted to follow.
"I'd love to move in with you, Stevie."
Neither boy would ever have to spend another day, Valentine's or not, not feeling completely and utterly loved ever again.

@steddielovemonth Day 28: Love is when you look at his lips for half the conversation because you can’t stop thinking about kissing him. @starryeyedjanai
Tumblr media
"Steve!" Robin clicked her fingers in front of Steve's face, Steve turned towards her, "Have you heard a thing I said?"
"Sure, I was listening."
"No you weren't you weren't looking at me, I wasn't born yesterday, Evie."
Steve smiled slyly, "Fine what were you saying about your date with Nancy," he replied pointedly looking at her lips this time.
Robin cracked a giddy grin, "The rollerskating was a great idea she held my hand all night cause you know I'm a klutz!"
Steve laughed turning to continue stacking the tapes. Robin poked her head round him at the sound of the front bell.
"Eddie!" She said tapping Steve and pointing. Steve grinned at the metalhead wiggling his fingers in a wave.
"Stevie! How's my favourite future cyborg, you ready to go?" Steve liked watching Eddie talk, the way his lips moved.
"Thanks for driving him, Ed, it was hard enough convincing him to go to the first appointment, wanna make sure he actually gets them."
"Course, Bucks, happy to babysit our favourite babysitter."
Steve punched out his card and gathered his things from the back. The drive to the doctor's office was quick, the thrum of Eddie's mixtapes vibrating the van. Steve always liked hanging out with Eddie, he liked loud.
He really wanted to hold Eddie's hand once they were sat in the bright white office. The cold walls were a little too similar to the bunker, but he'd promised Robin.
"It'll be a little weird when we first turn them on but you should adjust within a week." The doctor explained before fiddling with the device. A few seconds later the tune of the radio flooded his ears, Steve perked up a smile gracing his face. He looked over at Eddie, "I can hear the radio!" Eddie grinned widely in return.
Later, back at the trailer Steve was enjoying hearing the movie playing, happy to not have to rely on the limited subtitled movies Hawkins had to offer. He could hear Eddie finishing dinner in the background, it warmed his heart feeling somewhat normal again.
"Hear you go, sweetheart," Eddie said passing Steve a bowl of spaghetti, plopping down beside him, it was nice, hearing Eddie's voice more clearly now.
He paused the movie as Eddie started monologuing about something that had happened at the garage that morning. Steve wasn't really paying attention, too busy watching Eddie's lips. He wanted to tell Eddie how he felt but he didn't want to lose this.
"Stevie?"
"Hmm?" He replied not looking away from Eddie's mouth.
"Your hearing aids stop working? You've been reading my lips."
Steve blushed, "Um no, I heard you just fine."
Eddie paused before smirking, "See something you like then, sweetheart?"
Steve smiled in return, "Maybe, maybe I just need you to come closer to hear better."
Eddie leaned forward, glancing down at Steve's lips, "Better?"
"Hmm, little closer, don't want to miss anything you say, very important."
Eddie was barely a breath away, all Steve had to do was close the gap, "Stevie." Eddie said Steve's name like a promise and Steve couldn't help moving forward, brushing his lips against Eddie's.
He's glad he listened to Robin and got the hearing aides, he wanted to memorise the sound of Eddie's gasps and moans forever.

@steddielovemonth Day 27: Love is just a four-letter word. @sal-si-puedes
Tumblr media
Reading and writing had never come easy to Steve. Surprisingly, numbers had been easy, which definitely helped as he moved into retail later in life. Letters though, they were often his enemy.
Nancy was a big reason he even was able to graduate let alone write college essays. He'd have her check and recheck until all the letters sat in their correct spots.
Working at Scoops had been relatively easy, he learnt what flavours looked like rather than reading their labels, memorizing their menu by reading it over and over again until he was sure he knew everything on it.
Working at Family Video had been harder, a lot more titles and words to read. Miserably watching the letters jump into wrong places, often placing titles in B rather than D.
Robin helped, mentioned a cousin with dyslexia, suggested a doctor but after Starcourt you'd have to drag him to a doctor. Instead he mostly manned the till, stocked the candy and rewound tapes.
He thought about college again, thought about his future and what he wanted. He knew everything would involve reading though so he put a pin in that for later, although becoming a math teacher sounded nice, he liked numbers and kids.
Part of him was jealous that he couldn't be someone to read to Eddie as he lay in the hospital, all the kids took turns, he didn't even know if Eddie would want him to read to him.
Eddie brought a new wave of words to his life, but in loud rambles like Robin. Steve expressed how he wished he could read as much as Eddie, explaining his difficulties.
"I could read to you?"
Steve smiled at Eddie's blush.
"I'd like that."
It became a thing to chase away nightmares, soft words lulling the younger boy to sleep, Eddie never seemed to mind claiming a bedmate helped with the nightmares.
Now Steve was in a new predicament. Butterflies in his stomach every time Eddie would use his soft voice knowing Steve was almost asleep or when they'd curl up together every movie night.
"You like Eddie!"
"Ok we're just skipping over me liking guys, yes I like Eddie!"
"Has more talent than Tammy I'll give you that."
He sat at his desk now, surrounded by scrunched up pieces of paper, "This was a stupid idea!"
"What you working on, Stevie?"
Shit, was it 3 o'clock already!? He hadn't heard Eddie get here, he wasn't meant to see this yet, it wasn't perfect yet.
"Um, nothing?"
"That a question or a statement, sweetheart?" Eddie laughed softly walking over to the desk quickly peering over Steve's shoulder before Steve had a chance to cover it.
"Aw a Valentine's letter! Who's the lucky lady that has Steve Harrington writing, she must be pretty special." There was a tightness in Eddie's voice but Steve could only feel the flush rising in his cheeks.
"They are and they're always writing such lovely words I wanted to show them I was serious." Steve said hoping Eddie didn't pick up he didn't say she.
"Let me take a look, Stevie, you know I don't mind proofreading your stuff," the paper was in Eddie's hands before Steve could stop him.
Roses are red, but you only like black,
You're so brave, always having my back.
Valentine's Day, only one thing to do,
Telling you, how much I levo you!
Happy Valentine's Day Eddie!
Love your, Stevie
Steve wanted Hawkins to open up again just to swallow him up. Eddie was quiet which he never is which terrified Steve.
After a moment Eddie reached over Steve again grabbing the pencil and carefully crossing out a word in the poem.
I levo love you
"I love you too, sweetheart, spelling mistakes and all."
And that was something Steve didn't need any help reading.

Happy birthday @henderdads in honour of you, the number one supporter of my Midnights collection, my go-to swiftie in my phone and because our Taylor has left my country singing this song on her last show here, enjoy.
When the morning came we were cleaning incense off your vinyl shelf
'Cause we lost track of time again
Laughing with my feet in your lap
Like you were my closest friend
"How'd we end up on the floor anyway?" You say
"Your roommate's cheap-ass screw-top rosé, that's how"
I see you every day now
“Steveeeee, your little candle died!” Eddie giggled from the other room. They’d spent the day unpacking Steve’s new apartment downtown. Well, Steve had unpacked, and Robin and Eddie had spent most of the day snooping through boxes. Robin had gone home, her parents still wary of her staying out after dark, Starcourt only a few months ago.
“Little candle? Oh, the incense,” Steve said coming into the room to see Eddie on the floor. He wiped off the little pile of ash and plopped down next to Eddie, stretching his legs over him. “Share that you gremlin, Robin bought that for my housewarming!” Steve reached over Eddie to grab the bottle of wine Robin’s mum sent with her.
“It’s too bad Robbie can’t live here with you, I don’t want you being all lonely,” Eddie pouted looking over at him.
Steve took a big gulp of the tangy wine, “You could always move in?”
“You wouldn’t get sick of me?”
“Nah, sounds nice seeing you every day.”
“Ok, Stevie, I’ll tell Wayne tomorrow, now gimme that bottle, roomies gotta share!”
And I chose you
The one I was dancin' with
In New York, no shoes
Looked up at the sky and it was
Living with Eddie was easy, it was nice having someone to come home to. The kids liked him too, winning them over with Hellfire and nerdy movie nights. Sitting on a bathroom floor with Robin figuring out why he got butterflies every time Eddie smiled wasn’t as easy but it felt healing.
“We should go out!” Eddie had said when Steve came out to him, blushing hard before Eddie continued. “Robbie looks too young to join me when I go to this gay bar in Indy but I bet they’ll look the other way for you, sweetheart.”
That’s how Steve found himself twirling around a brightly lit dancefloor that Friday, boys with boys and girls with girls around him and he felt light and free. Eddie never left his side, his scary dog energy scaring off any guys that might’ve asked Steve to dance but Steve didn’t mind, maybe it meant Eddie would keep dancing with him.
They stumbled down the road together, planning to sleep the night off in the van and drive home in the morning. Steve giggled looking up, the morning sun had begun peaking over the horizon, it’s colours dancing through him matching the warmth he felt in his heart.
The burgundy on my T-shirt when you splashed your wine into me
And how the blood rushed into my cheeks, so scarlet, it was
The mark you saw on my collarbone, the rust that grew between telephones
The lips I used to call home, so scarlet, it was maroon
After that night the boys felt closer than ever. It was no surprise when they ended up on the living room floor again, a bottle of cheap red wine between them. Laughter filled their home in a way it never did in Steve’s house growing up. Eddie threw his hands around as he spoke, inevitably spilling the wine on them, narrowly missing the carpet.
“Oh shit, sorry Steve!” Eddie said following Steve to the bathroom. For a brief moment, Steve thought of another stain in another bathroom, but as he turned towards Eddie all thoughts of that night left him. Eddie gently tried to get out the stain from the ruined shirt. Steve couldn’t help it, blame it on the wine, blame it on the location, but he reached out grabbing Eddie’s shirt and tugging him forward.
Their lips meeting, Steve tasted the wine and cigarettes they shared. He pulled back slowly, hoping he hadn’t ruined everything. He didn’t have to worry long as Eddie quickly pulled him back, meeting his lips again.
When the silence came, we were shaking blind and hazy
How the hell did we lose sight of us again?
Sobbin' with your head in your hands
Ain't that the way shit always ends?
It’s not always easy living with the person you care about most. November brought more nightmares, dreams he couldn’t explain to Eddie, wanting to keep him far away from the hell beneath them. He had to blame his screams for Robin on a fire and not the longest night of his life.
“Why won’t you talk to me, Stevie!”
“Because I can’t!”
“Why not!”
“I’m trying to protect you!”
Steve felt the slam of the door cut through him. For the first time in a long time, they sleep in separate beds.
You were standin' hollow-eyed in the hallway
Carnations you had thought were roses, that's us
I feel you no matter what
Steve came home a few days later to Eddie waiting at their door. Pink carnations held tightly in his hand, his teary eyes and flushed cheeks made Steve’s heart ache. Eddie looked up as he heard Steve approach, his voice cracking as he said his name.
The rubies that I gave up
“I’m sorry, Stevie. I shouldn’t have left, I was just worried about you.”
Steve gently took the flowers and Eddie’s hand, “I want to tell you, I just can’t and I need you to trust me, Eds.”
Eddie nodded and Steve unlocked their door leading them both inside. “You know, I love carnations,” Steve said giving Eddie a soft smile going to the kitchen to get them water.
Eddie laughed softly, “I thought they were roses, they just looked pretty and reminded me of you.”
Steve smiled, he thought about how his dad would always try and win his mother’s forgiveness with money and jewels, he liked this better.
And I lost you
The one I was dancin' with
In New York, no shoes
Looked up at the sky and it was maroon
No matter how hard Steve tried to protect the people he loved, they always seemed to get dragged into it. Steve never wanted to see Eddie as terrified as he did in that boathouse. He wishes he’d gone with Eddie that night after the game, but he’d promised Lucas that he’d drive him to the after-party. He didn’t even know Eddie was still dealing.
“Don’t be a hero,” he’d said, but now Eddie was bleeding in his arms. Dark red blood seeping into their shirts like the wine did all those months ago. Eddie’s eyes slipped closed on the drive to the hospital.

Everywhere Steve looked he saw red. He refused to leave the hospital until Eddie was out of surgery. Robin had dragged him to the bathroom, forcing him to wash the blood that coated his arms down the drain. She’d left to get him a change of clothes, leaving him to sit on the hard chairs in the waiting room.
The cushions a bright red, the blood a muddy maroon under his nails, his shirt stained a deep scarlet, the smell of rust and iron coming off of him, a crimson sky behind his eyes.
And I wake with your memory over me
That's a real fucking legacy, legacy (it was maroon)
And I wake with your memory over me
That's a real fucking legacy to leave
Steve doesn’t remember when he sat down beside Eddie’s bedside. He just remembers a teary phone call to Wayne and seeing Eddie still breathing. Wayne had to go to work, Steve didn’t have anywhere to be since Family Video sunk into the earth with half the town. Pink carnations in a vase at his bedside.
“I told you not to be a hero, Eds.”
The brief bouts of sleep he got leant over Eddie or curled up in his chair were plagued with losing Eddie over and over. Til one night he dreams of them back in their apartment, lying on their floor, Eddie’s fingers brushing through his hair. He wakes, still feeling the edges of his dream, fingers still in his hair. He glances up and meets warm brown eyes.
“Eds, you’re awake!”
“Sorry I tried being a hero, Stevie, I should’ve trusted you.”

The day Eddie comes home, a town rebuilt, Steve swears the sky is the same pink it was that night in Indianapolis. He helps Eddie up the stairs, opening the door, the apartment just how they left it. The warm burgundy blanket on their ruby couch. A bottle of red wine on the counter, cherry wood cabinets and chestnut floors. A soft blush on both their faces as they lay down on the scarlet sheets of their bed. Merlot on their lips as their sucked soft wine-coloured bruises, taking back their love from months so close yet so far apart.
It was maroon
It was maroon
Steve would wake later, lips bit rough and maroon and thank the world that life didn’t end under a blood-red sky.
