From fabric pile to flouncy dress: I’ve been making an Alice in Wonderland costume! Using one of the Simplicity patterns so it’s not quite the traditional Disney costume, but I like how it’s turned out. (The bows and buttons are actually only pinned on in that second picture, but I’ve just finished sewing them on. :D)

We were at Animecon and I’d pulled out my old costume of The Queen from Snow White, and they had a perfect photo area for it! All photos are by my wife @morningmaple.

Last weekend Pez and I went to Animecon! They have a formal ball on the Friday night and we wanted something especially for that.

So we made ballroom-appropriate versions of Cindy and Aranea from Final Fantasy XV! We worked out the designs together, then Pez made the outfits and I styled the wigs. I think they turned out pretty well -- people recognised who we were supposed to be, at least! (We rewore the outfits on the Saturday so we could get some nice photos, and got awful sunburn. Oops!)

Finished up the jacket for Keith (from Voltron)! Gonna be wearing him at MCM May Comic Con next weekend at the Coscraft booth!

Meanwhile in other news I’m cosplaying Persona 5′s Akira at London MCM May and I begged my wife for help with this (again, fine motor control skills are my enemy) so she added the pattern to this t-shirt for me! It’s made by cutting out  heat vinyl from Coscraft and ironing it on! My wife is being Akira in his Dancing All Night outfit to go with mine, and we’ll be in the Coscraft booth!

So one of my projects this year is Lin Zue Ya from Thunderbolt Fantasy!

We went to Hong Kong and Taipei last month and they’re paradises for cosplay materials. We went to huge fabric markets and I was able to source a lot of fabric and trimmings and gems and that specific type of fur. Unfortunately I couldn’t find a good gradient blue fabric to use as a base for the outside of his robe, despite scouring about a hundred fabric stalls! My wife found a Taobao seller who sells the fabric pre-printed and since my painting skills are only so-so anyway I decided to give it a shot and order that. It turned up today and it’s so beautiful! I’m really smitten. I don’t have time to work on this project for ages (and the stuff i bought in HK/Taipei is mostly still en route from HK in a box anyway) but I’m super excited about this project now one of the most impactful parts is sorted out!

This winter's project is to learn and use a bunch of new techniques, especially relating to dyes and casting. I'm hoping the result will be something beautiful and interesting, but it will depend how fast and well I learn!

Like most cosplayers, we have lots of fabric stashed away, so I dug out the ones that are most likely to get included in this project: leathers, suedes, silks, some netting. Hopefully i can make a dent in some of our fabric piles!

Today: working on Machineries of Empire cosplay, mostly just cutting out the patterns and the fabric!

Making cosplays from books is always a challenge, without the visual references you would normally rely on when making cosplay, especially in a universe where the fashions can canonically change very swiftly. The author has drawn a few pictures of some characters on his blog, so I’ve been using those and general military fashion as my inspirations, working from the pattern here as a base for the jacket. There’ll be additional braiding, and probably epaulets. And probably a cravat.

I must've looked at your Yuri cosplay for inspiration back when did mine. :o You have a good taste for characters ;)

Thanks! Yuri’s one of my favourite protagonists in anything, honestly. I love that the game didn’t shy away from making him absolutely ruthless.I hope your costume turned out great!

Throwback Thursday! Old photos of me and Pez as Yuri and Flynn from Tales of Vesperia plus one photo featuring ElegantAura as Judith, Sammykins as Rita, Dark_Angel_15 as Estelle, and Aden as Schwann.

This was the first costume I made almost entirely by myself, and my third costume ever! Pez made my wristbangles and my scabbard, but everything else was by me. I would make it very differently now -- the shoes in particular I would definitely do differently -- but it was fun at the time!
