Sidestep for Victory - An analysis of Techno and Dream's dynamic

Techno and Dream’s dynamic is pretty unique amongst the relationships on the server. Before they were forced to spend three months stuck together in a cell with little to do, they weren’t really friends. In truth, they weren’t even really allies. During the times they worked together, they did so because they trusted that their goals aligned, not because they trusted one another. 

Yet, they’re also far from enemies. Rivals, the fandom calls them, but they don’t exactly compete against one another. Mostly, they prefer to stay out of the other’s way, when they’re not actively helping each other that is. 

Techno and Dream are peers in a way they don’t really have with anyone else. Their skills allow them to be confident in their ability to handle threats and enemies with everyone else. But with each other, it’s not that simple. 

A fight between them is, at best, a coin flip. An equal chance for each other to emerge victorious. At worst, it would drain both their resources before the defeated escapes. While Dream is a risk taker and Techno is more risk aversed, neither is stupid about it. A fight where the possibility of victory is so uncertain and the costs of both winning and losing are so big is not a good fight to pick. This is a sentiment both expressed at one point or another: 

BBH: “Techno you wanna help us kill Dream?” Techno: “Nah, I’m out of here. He has creative mode, I don’t want to mess with that guy.” (3:12:15)

Dream: “Probably the only person on the server that I wouldn’t necessarily want to go engage in battle with is Technoblade. Just because I know he has his ways.” (4:21:50)

This aversion to fight one another is the key to understanding the basis of their dynamic and subsequently, their relationship.

streams missed: hbomb’s (l’cast), fundy’s, tubbo’s, technoblade’s (streamed with ranboo), jack manifold’s (streamed with niki), niki’s (streamed with jack), foolish’s, hannah’s, captain puffy’s

important events:

- ranboo seems to be acting strangely on fundy’s stream, and froze puffy in her tracks when she made eye contact with him

- tommy finally learns of the egg infestation with tubbo, then collects materials for sam to continue his hotel

- technoblade and ranboo go on an adventure; they experiment with ranboo’s silk touch hands

- ranboo can pick up spawners, but they revert to being pig spawners

- tales from the smp: city of mizu was today!

- karl is confirmed to be a time traveller who loses a bit of his identity every time he travels, but needs to keep travelling to prevent the bad things he’s seen…

- badboyhalo and antfrost try to convince sam and puffy to join the eggpire and support it; sam and puffy are angry with bad and ant for endangering tommy and tubbo, as well as the rest of the server

- bad and ant trap sam in the egg room and say puffy’s time will be coming soon

ok MAYHAPS im just a dream simp ok?? but, personally, im a little disappointed hes going to prison, from a meta sense. like narratively everything was fucking *chefs kiss* i love seeing that evil green pissbaby get knocked down a peg. but like... idk rp!dream is one of my favorite dream smp characters and now that hes in prison, hes going to be a lot less plot relevant.

hopefully we get some kind of resolution to the dteam angst of dream cutting off his friends, but besides that idk

Here’s my problem - I became very emotionally attached to c!Dream when it seemed he was getting better morally and such - and obviously that didn’t work out.

Now I can easily defend everything c!Dream does politically BUT MORALLY THIS GREEN BITCH IS BREAKING MY HEART AND I JUST WANT HIM TO BE GOOD AND GREAT AND BE HAPPY WITH PEOPLE BUT HE KEEPS MANIPULATING CHILDREN AND UGGHHH

AND I KNIW HES THE VILLAN HES CLEARLY THE VILLAN HES LITERALLY CHAOTIC EVIL BUT DAMMUT IF IM WAITING FOR A REDEMPTION ARC EVERY DAY

I simultaneously want to punch him as well as take him to therapy and give him a hug

It also doesn’t help that c!Tommy upsets me in so many ways in how he acts and treats others

I love Eret's character so much, and they deserve love and friendship. But if/when Wilbur Soot is resurrected, if the first thing that he does isn't punching Eret square in the face for allowing his amnesiac ghost to dictate his life choices, I'm going to be disappointed.

there’s a severe disconnect between tommy and technos own perceptions of eachother. both believe the other never cared about them. tommy because techno destroyed one of the things he loved, and techno because tommy has only ever used him as a weapon

- dream allows tommy to go to l’manburg for a bit where there’s sort of a tubbo/tommy reunion, but tommy thinks he’s an illusion

- quackity visits tommy in logstedshire to give him gifts, ends up building random buildings with techno and tommy

- sam works on the prison more and reveals the prison vault door at last

- punz hides his shulker box that he got from drista since it will be the only one on the server ever
