I honestly feel like Namikawa's relationship with the people around him is a pretty complicated topic. Namikawa has always striked me as this success-driven man who doesn't care much about most people. Especially when he sees those people as something below him - or just more foolish than him. If someone's lucky enough for Namikawa to consider them to be "on his level" (i feel like this is the case for Mido and Ooi), he will actually talk to said person and he actually might like them but if it's not the case, he just sees people as this expendable thing if they don't have anything to offer to him and doesn't even bother to try to form a genuine bond with them.
His dislike for "Useless subordinates", his complete indifference towards Hatori's (who's mostly seen as a joke by everyone and Namikawa too) death and towards the whole scheme of killing other bussinessmen just proves this further to me. He doesn't care for other people at all, staying completely calm during the meetings until his own is the one at risk. From what I remember, the only time we see Namikawa drop his ever-present poker face is when he gets the first call from L/Light and actually realises that he may be screwed.

Another two things that solidify these ideas to me are the way he behaved during Misa's party and his relationship with Shimura.
Namikawa has one of the highest "Social Skills" status out of the whole group but then he just stays in his own corner at Misa's party, not even talking to anyone. There could be a lot of reasons for him to have done so but the distance he keeps from everyone just kinda goes to show how uninterested he is in people who are not on his level.
The development of his relationship with Shimura is also a focus point on all of this. At first, we just kinda get the idea that Namikawa finds him foolish by the way he just mostly dismisses Shimura's concerns and what he says. But as the meetings go on, and Shimura ends up "proving himself" to Namikawa, even if not even on purpose, who realises Shimura is as clever as he is. The more time passes, the more Namikawa starts backing Shimura up in the meetings and honestly seems interested in what he has to say, especially during the secret trio meeting where most of his questions are addressed to Shimura. Its a big and noticeable change in attitude, going from just brushing him off to actually (partly) respect him after he was surprised by Shimura's true character.
To sum it up, Namikawa feels like the type of guy to kinda put himself up on a pedestal and feel like he is more than other people, also judging others too quickly. Maybe he could learn a thing or two if he actually started to give people more chances and decided to be empathetic for once JHSJSJS
Im probably rambling like a lunatic and this is probably OOC but this train of thought just popped into my mind and I needed to write it down JSJSJ. Also sorry it is so confusing, English is not my first language 😭
Also this is pretty random but this whole thing just came to my mind due to this joke tweet I made about Namikawa's reaction to Light/L's call 😭

trust me, idek how this inspired such a messy ramble
#UR SO RIGHT OP#namikawa is the master of buying into his own bs#i love him for that#Reiji Namikawa

more of the kaiji x dn crossover light as degen gambler misa as girlboss casino owner (misa in a suit 😳) L as son of very rich man (this one's pretty on point! except kazuya couldn't be more different than L personalitywise) higuchi as pathetic casino owner (rahh i actually like my casting of higuchi as muraoka so much. fits so well. they're both greedy pathetic sleazy men)
+ higuchi playing mahjong. i think a lot about him playing mahjong... i want him to be decent at it. and maybe know some cheating tricks. i was actually thinking of writing another AU for dn where it's just mahjong. but coming up with a whole game is quite hard? i guess i could use my own game logs, but i'm not a very good player haha.

there are basically three main types of namiguchi AUs:
self-hatred and belligerent yearning with no relief
illicit hate sex affair
they’re married and live together in a huge house made of mostly windows that blocks their neighbors’ view of the city and they fuck on the patio
and, if you believe, you can hit all three of these categories at once

Best Regrets - A Hatomura playlist. Listen on Spotify or YouTube.
Briefly annotated tracklist under the cut.
Happy Accident by Bright Eyes too much time for the self-employed / i heard you scream in your mother's voice / so afraid you'd become her in the end / you want a life that you cannot live / but that's what keeps you competitive / throw another shower for a friend
Rise Up in the Dirt by Voxtrot but if i were a good man, would it really happen? / would you walk me home, then, everyday from work? / maybe i'm a good man, wait and let it happen / i believe in love, i'm married to my work
Sommeil by Stromae you can lie to whoever you want / you smile too much to be happy / you make me sad / i love you all the same
The Tears of a Clown by The English Beat now if there's a smile on my face / it's only there trying to fool the public / but when it comes down to fooling you / now, honey, that's quite a different subject
Santa Monica by The Front Bottoms i wanna confess it in a whisper that's just loud enough to make out / i want you to listen from the kitchen to me confessing on the couch / i wanna be stronger than your dad was for your mom
Save It for Later by The English Beat two dozen other stupid reasons / why we should suffer for this / don't bother trying to explain them / just hold my hand while i come to a decision on it
Stairwell Song by Bright Eyes we were dressed alike / though you were one of a kind / for an enigmatic guy, you seemed relatable / you were smart, but so foolish with your heart / eyed the exit from the start / in the end, couldn't tell what you pretended
Best Regrets by They Might Be Giants* but i knew you in your time, when alarm bells filled your mind / and what was happening was happening with ten quarters and four dimes / now there's not much left to say, it's just excuses for today / so let's just save the list for the optimists, someone said they're on their way
Someone Great by LCD Soundsystem i wake up and the phone is ringing / surprised, as it's early / and that should be the perfect warning / that something's a problem / to tell the truth, i saw it coming / the way you were breathing / but nothing can prepare you for it / the voice on the other end
Michael Caine by Madness and all i wanted was a word / a photograph to keep / the sun is laughing, it's another broken morning / i see shadow and call out to try and warn him / he didn't seem to hear, just turned away
Calais to Dover by Bright Eyes now that you're gone / now that i'm out here on my own / it won't be long / 'til i have to pay for what i've done / tell me to stop / tell me to watch the way i talk / because nothing is changing / don't want to state the obvious
