Also (mentions of animal death tw, nothing actually happened)
I had a vivid nightmare last night about when the mink killed my birds. Everything looked the same, with all my dead birds laid out around the coop. Except, for some reason, it was a raven killing them instead of a mink. I saw it on the baby monitor killing Cricket. I screamed at it and it flew off but it was too late, and it was so vivid that when I woke up I had to check the monitor to make sure they were all still there, and of course everything was fine. This is the first time I can remember having a nightmare about it, but I think it’s happened before but I couldn’t remember. It’s a sight I wish I could erase from my brain but it’s stuck there forever. All I can do is keep my brain distracted with other things, happy things like baby chicks, otherwise it’ll make me see that image again and again.

Me: is squeamish about blood
Also me: has to collect blood samples from my beloved chickies
I got it done, I think all the samples are okay but I’m feeling very 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫
Also just had a busy day in general, so I’m gonna turn in early. I’ve got a few very busy and stressful days ahead of me, but once the babies hatch I’ll just be chilling and hanging out with them all day so that’ll be a nice break

Omg the two bleary-eyed ones in the background are sending me 😂😂😂 just born, already sick of it
Phew! Just disinfected the nursery with Virkon, literally scrubbed every wall, the floor, the doors, the window, as well as the brooder and brooder plate, the big crate (that I’ll use once the chicks are a few weeks old), even the trash can! I’m a bit paranoid about the babies getting sick, but that’s because they’re my babies. You know how strict obstetrical wards/NICUs are, because you don’t want to take risks with your babies when they’re just born and have such weak immune systems. I have the same philosophy. So I always change clothes when I have to go between the coop and the nursery, I wear a shower cap in the coop so I don’t get dander in my hair, and of course I wash my hands throughly. If it’s within my power, I’ll do it to keep the babs safe. I’ll even vaccinate them myself if I have to. I hope it doesn’t come to that, it’s expensive and I’ve never given an injection before, but I’ll do it.

Yes, please keep me updated if possible, on the Legbars too! I talked to the breeder I got my current eggs from quite a bit, another benefit of finding someone local-ish whose farm is small enough that she gets to know the birds well. Her website has a lot of info too. With large-hatchery chicks you’re playing the lottery on temperament as well as health.
I hope you know your chick/egg posts gave me the human broodiness and... now I have roughly 60+ chicks. I blame you /j (I hatched from roughly 2 dozen yard bird eggs and 2 doz each of CCL, third gen olive eggers, and BCM)
Uh oh, guess it’s contagious! Sorry everyone! /lh
I seriously am feeling that human broodiness thing, I’m thinking of the eggs every second and don’t even wanna leave the house - I can’t imagine how bad it’ll get once they start pipping. I imagine next weekend I won’t leave their side at all, so I’m making sure I have extra groceries and stuff so I won’t have to! And every day I look at a chart I found that shows what they look like and how they’re developing inside the egg.
Also, a CCL is a Crested Cream Legbar, right? I had to google it, lol. Have you had them before? What are they like? I really considered getting some, they look really cute and iirc the breeder I got my eggs from has them. Plus I’d love more colored egg layers. And Marans too, I’d like some of those someday too, what’s their personality like if you’ve had them before?

That’s interesting about the green eggs- I got 3 blue eggs from the breeder, and only one of them developed. Of all the eggs I got, 2 of the 3 failures were the blue ones, 2 blue eggs clearly laid by different hens. Could be just a coincidence, though.
Anyway, thanks! The way you’ve described the Marans sounds a bit like how my Wyandottes are, clever but not very sociable. That’s too bad, maybe I’ll stick with Barnevelders for dark brown eggs since the one I raised is such a lovebug. My flock isn’t very big and they’re basically pets (although I do have a dedicated customer base now for buying eggs), so I really want them to at least be tame. But who knows, every bird is different and it doesn’t hurt to have a couple unfriendly birds who are cute and good layers of pretty eggs. My egg sales would be pitiful without my semi-feral Wyandottes.
Anyway, thanks for the info! Good luck with all your babies!

Peachy! She’s pretty spoiled now that she’s the only Faverolles left; I was really worried about her being lonely but she seems to get along well with last year’s youngsters and Jack has a soft spot for her. I always make sure she gets her fill of treats and that the others don’t just steal them all from her. Life’s hard at the bottom of the pecking order but being adorable sure helps!

Candled again last night, so far so good! All 19 eggs left looked like they’re developing normally, which is a lot of babies! Most of them were wiggling around, thankfully including the only 2 Hedemora eggs and the baby in the last blue Favaucana egg!
In a fit of paranoia about Marek’s disease, I’m going to test the unvaccinated adult birds in my flock now. I really don’t think my flock has it, since I’ve only ever lost 2 birds to illness. But just to be sure, and to know what to do to protect my new chicks, I’m testing them. If they’re positive I’m going to try vaccinating the chicks myself - not ideal, but better than losing them.

A quick Tucker appreciation post!
What a strange little bird. She’s really runty-looking compared to her sisters, way smaller and scrawnier. And she always seems to be a bit under-the-weather, either she’s coughing and sneezing, having runny poos, or laying weird-shaped eggs. But, her personally is much bigger than her body! She’s chatty, bold, and lively, she’s usually the first of her sisters to rush me for treats - and she’ll readily kick the ass of a hen twice her size to get them! Nothing slows down this little dynamo! Maybe that’s why she’s one of Jack’s favorite hens!

I candled the eggs again last night, to check up on the two eggs I couldn’t see clearly inside. Unfortunately one was an obvious dud, but I could see dark patches in the other one so I’m gonna leave it for a couple more days and check again. Don’t want a rotten egg exploding in there! Sad that two of the three blue eggs didn’t develop, but I do have a couple brown Favaucana eggs too that look healthy. I candled the others too, and they’re starting to wiggle around in their eggs 😭
My allergies have been slowing me down a big recently but I’m gonna get the nursery all set up next week!

I decided to candle my eggies a bit early, I was going to do it tomorrow but I just couldn’t wait and it’s great news! 18 out of the 22 are clearly developing normally, 2 I couldn’t tell yet (these were 2 of the 3 Fauvacana eggs that are blue, their shells are so pigmented that I couldn’t get a clear look inside), and only 2 were obviously duds. So that’s 18-20 tiny, tiny babies sleeping in their eggies! Seeing them is truly amazing, the fetuses are about the size of a small fingernail with clearly visible dark eyeballs! From what I’ve read, at day 6 they have little beating hearts, they’re growing legs, wings, and beaks, and they’re deciding whether they’re going to be pullets or cockerels! It’s so amazing I could cry 😭 I love you my little blobby babies

My favorite chicken was a soft feather dark and iridescent Cochin I loved her softness
Oh, she sounds so lovely, I can just picture her.
Cochins are so beautiful, I don’t know if I would be able to resist the urge to constantly cuddle and squeeze it if I had one. Maybe someday I’ll get some myself!

Hey there, hope you’re having a wonderful day.
I just stumbled across your blog while browsing and I decided hey, this looks interesting. Chickens are pretty cool little dinosaurs and a lot of ppl don’t realize that.
Hi, thanks for stopping by!
Chickens really are tiny domesticated dinosaurs, I feel like people see them in cartoons as just dumb brainless things, but they’re actually curious and active animals, that’ll happily hunt and eat insects and small animals, and have strong social bonds.
When they’re young, just between the fluffball chick stage and the almost-a-chicken stage they really look like tiny velociraptors.
Tumblr media
I can easily imagine a gaggle of these following a big scary mama raptor who’ll murder you for even looking at her babies.
