I just wanna say sorry if I am being too much or if I am being too negative, I really don’t mean to be. I just kinda threw up on my keyboard after finding out more info with the production. I don’t really feel like I have friends or anything within the fandom anymore sand I don’t know anyone irl that likes or knows abt the musical so I have nowhere to go. Not trying to find pity but I’m just trying to give an explanation.
Again, very sorry if I made anyone feel uncomfortable or if I made them feel bad, I really didn’t mean to. I probably just won’t really come back then just so then I don’t make anyone feel any worse

Idk I somehow don’t think it is for representation of differently abled trains. From the interview that I came across some ppl were asking alw if he ever though of using scooters or skateboards to represent the trains but alw said that he really hated that idea because it messes with the spectacle of it (since you have to push off the floor to move its not at smooth in motion)
If it were to represent trains that have disabilities that would be good but I feel like alw has a lot less to do with this production that I thought
I am so scared
SCOOTERS?!?!?
ALW was NOT in the room when they decided that 😭

I agree, for Greaseball’s whole character seems to be based around him being a big macho man so making him a woman now seems a bit odd. If they have a woman playing the same role but with the character still a man I guess that makes sense but is still a little odd and confusing. For the part with Dinah I understand your point but neither is better. I think the whole GreaseDinah relationship is to show forgiveness and change in relationship. That being said, your basic run of the mill “He’s mean and she’s nice” kinda relationship is more accepted for this type of thing. But I do agree that the “Evil Lesbian” type relationship would be harmful because it pushes negative stereotypes. Now I know what ppl say that queer ppl can be bad ppl too and I agree but I think that if the relationship is now LGBTQ then it is just completely seen differently and more as a stereotype which can be hurtful. If a character like Electra was made female (or in my ideal world played by someone who is NB or they alternate between male and female actors) that would be different. It doesn’t push the same hurtful stereotypes.
Also honestly to me (and I know I might get heat for this but hear me out) making Greaseball female seems to just be to say “Wow! Look at how progressive we are!!!” but it just doesn’t feel genuine. This musical already has the first canonically bi and gender fluid character which is great. More things like that can be done. You can tease at CB and Electra more (please they are husbands come on 😭). You can have more female Rockies too. What they did by adding a male coach seems like the right move, it is simple and seamless and not such a drastic change that could possibly change the plot and purpose of the production(not saying FemGB is doing that, it’s really too early too tell). Even having Momma replace Poppa wasn’t bad, it’s just different but it feels right to me. Do I miss the strong male vocals yeah but Reva Rice was the perfect pick(I love her so much)
I just feel like this change was not at all personal and was just done to say “Look at how progressive we are!” When they could have just FINALLY GIVEN US FEMALE ELECTRA (never getting over that😤). I guess we just have to wait and see
but anyway, thank you for listening to my tedTalk
Thoughts on Female Greaseball
I just wanted to share my thoughts, my concerns about changing gender for Greaseball. Now we don't know the extent to which they're rewriting the show, and these concerns may well be addressed, we'll have to wait and see... but follow along with me here...
First off, to tell a story, you need conflict and resolution. You got to show the bad things, to then overcome the bad things. Greaseball is an antagonist in the show - he does bad things, we, the audience, don't support his decisions. Sure he's a lovable character but he's flawed.
Greaseball is the "Reigning Champion", he represents the present world (Electra represents the undefinable weirdness and possibilities of the future, Poppa is the cozy nostalgic past.) He's representing some of the bad things we want to learn to do better from through the course of the story.
"UNCOUPLED" is sung by Dinah at her lowest point. She's just been dumped and from what she tells us in that song, it suggests her partner has been borderline gaslighting her and emotionally abusive - she's blaming herself for her partner's choices. Her partner that she's singing about has been really shitty to her.
Now, with a masculine Greaseball, we all immediately recognise the Misogyny there, all familiar tropes of "he's left me for someone younger, prettier, thinner, less outspoken" fuelled by the toxic masculinity, objectifying women. This is showing the bad stuff that the characters overcome - this is the story arc. Masculine Greaseball is a recognisable trope, he's "Alpha Male" - all the privilege has led him to being able to take whatever he wants. But Feminine Greaseball, a queer woman as antagonist who's been abusing sweet Dinah, what trope does she fall into? Evil Lesbian.
This is a sung-through roller-skating musical about toy trains, there isn't room to tell complex character development for the average audience member - these characters rely on archetypes to be easily recognisable. There's so much room for the performers to add subtlety, context, subtext, sure, but the main picture is painted in broad strokes. And I'm not sure that replacing "Toxic Alpha Male" as a villain, with "Evil Lesbian", is actually progressive.
Maybe they've thought this through and already have solutions... maybe "Evil Lesbian" is the trope they want for one of their antagonists. It just feels to me that it would be more productive to be working with "this macho alpha male crap is a problem" than taking it out of the discussion.

Also important thing to note abt why I am so scared for the new music. For Stex, any new songs in the past were not written by ALW after Next Time You Fall in Love (And I Do but I don’t really remember if it was his or not). I Got Me wasn’t written by him and we all have mixed feelings or differing opinion abt that one also Whole Lotta Locomotion wasn’t written by him either and while it isn’t bad, again, ppl often have mixed feelings on it (I like it, it slaps but I know not everyone thinks that way).
So, if ALW isn’t writing this new music and these new songs, I fear we may be doing a take 2 of Cats 2019(-cough- Beautiful Ghosts -cough-) or it may be like Bad Cinderella where you just know it could have been done better

As @bellesdomain so beautiful told me, this new production isn’t really ALWs work which makes sense as to why it feels like a bad fanfic from ppl that just have the power to make it come to life. If ALW isn’t actually working on it himself then idk how well it will turn out and since a lot of the OG creative team isn’t there I feel like it will be a spin off more likely
So seeing that the OGs aren’t really taking part in this production, I worry, fear and I actually think that this will be another Cats 2019 Movie type situation again 😭

The more I find out abt the new production the more confused and embarrassed I am 😭 Like these names are so similar to the names I came up with for ocs when I was in my tweens like what is ALW on??? He is reverting back to an awkward homeschooled middle schooler instead of pumping out the good stuff that we all want(what he originally had)😭

Before anyone gets the wrong idea abt me, I just wanna say that I don’t hate the fact that they made Greaseball a girl now (not trying to be a negative little goose even though I keep ranting) I am just more surprised and intrigued cuz I really don’t see it so I don’t have any full proper opinions yet
BUT WHAT HAPPENED TO CB IS HE JUST NOT WANTED IN ENGLAND NOW??? WHAT DID HE DO TO DESERVE THIS😭😭😭

So it isn’t really my intention to be like actually back or anything but man oh man I have some hot (lukewarm) takes
I understand the want for inclusion in the different roles and I agree that it should be more inclusive. For instance, having a male coach, Momma Macoy, even confirming Electra’s gender and sexual identity. To me, if they wanted to further that they could have made Electra’s role open to both male and female actors. Honestly that one of the things that I’m the most butt hurt abt, I really wanted to see a greater verity in Electra’s. I just don’t really see a female GB, like I think it’s really interesting but I don’t see it, it doesn’t really make sense to me. Could we have more female Rockies (please please please I wanted this so badly). I’m thinking that maybe they will just have a woman play the part of Greaseball like how in Shakespeare’s day they had guys play women’s roles which I get it but idk I want to hear that STRONG BARITONE 😭😭😭
Also if they mess up the music I will be so made (I am a music major)
