"Why are you staring like that?"

"I'm just appreciating the view."

Xiao only huffs, lips pulled tight into an incredulous expression. He turns from the view of the marsh to look at you. Golden-amber eyes glower from beneath fluttering dark lashes, searching your own expression for any other answers.

You're staring at him like he's just hung the moon and the stars. It makes his breath catch in his throat and stomach churn.

He's known you for long enough, yet you continue to remain unpredictable throughout this strange relationship.

You seem content with the quiet evenings spent by his side as you talk his ear off about your day. Yet, something seems to be missing.

Despite being something more than acquaintances- friends, he would say if his pride wasn't on the line- you two acted like average coworkers meeting up for a drink after a long day of work.

You once brought up the idea of a date, only to get shot down by his retreating figure moments later.

It wasn't until the following week that he would show up again, refusing to meet your questioning gaze and finally, finally giving you an answer to your question a week prior.

"Let's just... visit the harbor tonight. Together."

It wasn't as if he detested your presence. On the contrary, he would sometimes look forward to your meetings just to hear you talk and distract him from the twisting pain in his chest.

But he didn't actively seek you out during the day for the faintest glimpse of your silky-smooth voice or mischievous eyes glinting in amusement if you caught sight of him- no. Absolutely not.

Something prods at the tip of his pinky. He looks down at the railing, where his gloved hands rested to see your own hand inching closer and closer.

Fighting back the urge to jerk away, he clenches his jaw and tries his hardest to seem unaffected.

"Xiao," you hum. He doesn't realize it, but from the way he's basically glaring at your hand like it insulted his entire bloodline, you're tempted to pull back and never show your face ever again. Yet he makes no move to stop you when your pinky rests comfortably over his. "What are we?"

To this, the Adeptus finally raises his head. The question seems to bounce around in his head, all sorts of answers fall on the tip of his tongue.

Companions. Friends. Lovers.

Yet he feels as if there's something more.

Despite his lack of answers, you pull away with a cheeky laugh. "Have you ever heard of soulmates?" You ask, the light of the setting sun reflecting back at him from your glassy eyes.

He repeats your words, tongue heavy in his mouth as you nod.

"Mhm, do you think we're soulmates?"

What a ridiculous question, he wants to say. Someone like him could never entertain such a thought. What sane person would even want to be bound to someone like him? Whose hands will be forever stained crimson from a lifetime of slaughter.

He feels bile rise up to his throat at the thought but shakes his head to rid of the images flashing in his mind.

"Mortal superstitions hold no importance to the Adepti." He manages with a resigned sigh. Turning back to the sunset, he pointedly ignores the way you shuffle closer. Ever the persistent human, you are. "If such things interest you, why not search for someone who--"

He stiffens as you lean against his shoulder. The instinct to jerk away is strong, but some unknown force keeps him rooted in place.

You're warm. Cozying up to the Adeptus should be something frowned up. But as the seconds tick by, Xiao finds himself less stiff and eventually his shoulders droop and his arms fall lax to his sides.

"Xiao, I think I'm in love with you." You whisper, hands fumbling with the seam of your sleeve.

He wants to leave, he needs to recollect his thought before you can figure out the effect you have on him.

But still, he stays- allowing you to lean on his shoulder as you doze off, eyes fluttering shut as the final rays of light disappear into a blanket of stars.

Maybe in the morning, he'll tell you he feels the same. But for now, he'll enjoy the warmth of your body, knowing you won't go anywhere soon.

Xiao’s known your backstory for quite some time now; you had told him when the two of you made your couple title official.  After you had told him, he had conveniently ‘stumbled’ upon them while they were leaving Liyue for a vacation and recognized them based on your descriptions.  He wasn’t going to be satisfied knowing only their names, you know?  If there was even the slimmest of chances that they would cross paths with you, he had to be prepared to act.

So when he walked in on the scene that was playing out on the top balcony of Wangshu Inn, he was immediately put in a bad mood.  He stood in the shadows to observe and contemplate his next move; his initial plan involved violence, but he figured you’d be upset with him if he resorted to such 'drastic’ measures.

He takes a moment to process my words, and once he realizes I heard what he said he abruptly turns so his back is facing me. 

Fine by me, I still get a good view.

It’s days like these when you just want to hide away in your room, not willing to face the world. Days when everything’s gray and cold and there’s a heavy feeling in your chest that only gets worse at the thought of getting up and doing… Anything, really. You peek out from under your blanket to check the time -- 1 PM -- and immediately turn around to stare at your wall again, shielding yourself from the light seeping through the window by drawing the blanket over your head again. You’ve already wasted so much of today, it really doesn’t seem worth getting up now.

There’s something you forgot, but your brain is surrounded by a thick fog that makes it hard to form a coherent thought. Only when you hear the knock at your front door do you remember -- You wanted to meet Xiao for lunch today. The thought pierces through the fog, hits you with a wave of panic that leaves you paralized. You have to get out of bed, throw on some proper clothes and make yourself presentable right now before Xiao decides to just let himself in instead. Or maybe, a small voice in the back of your head calls, you should just stay quiet and hide until he goes away. You’re not that important, surely he’ll just leave. Yeah. That seems like the best option.

Xiao does, however, not decide to just go away, so a few minutes later you hear the front door open, followed by a couple of cautious steps and a worried “Hello? Y/N? Are you okay?”

You could just play dead. Maybe he’ll think you aren’t here and go away.

He doesn’t.

“There you are,” Xiao’s voice says, now much closer than before. “Did you oversleep? Sorry if I just barged in here, I got worried and-”

“I’m okay,” you lie, fighting to keep your voice steady and hoping it doesn’t sound as dead inside as you’re feeling. “You’re right, I just overslept… I’ll be there in a moment.” You really don’t feel like even getting up, but Xiao is already here and knowing him he’s not going to leave unless you give him a good reason to.

“There’s no need to rush,” Xiao assures you. “Are you sure you’re alright? You don’t sound so good.” Leave it to Xiao to always see right through you. You want to say something, tell him once again that you’re okay and he shouldn’t worry about you, but it’s exhausting to try and come up with a believable answer, so you just stay quiet.

After a few more moments of silence, you hear steps approaching you, feel the bed dipping down behind you and a hand gently resting on your shoulder. You glance back at Xiao who is now leaning over you with a frown, his eyebrows drawn together. His gaze meets yours as he brushes his fingers through your hair. “Would you rather like to stay home today?” He asks with a soft voice.

You bite your lip and just nod, turning to rest your cheek against his hand. “Sorry,” you whisper as you close your eyes to focus on the way his skin is still slightly cold from the winter air outside. “I guess I’m not feeling that well today.” It’s hard to admit it out loud, but Xiao just nods and gently pulls you closer to rest your head in his lap.

“That’s alright,” Xiao says, carding his fingers through your hair.

You sigh as you bury your face in the fabric of his shirt. “Sorry you have to deal with me like this. I wish I could just be normal and spend time with you like usual, but…” You fall silent again, forcing yourself to take a deep breath. No use in crying now. That won’t make things any better.

“Hey now, I said I’d be with you for better or for worse, didn’t I? I was serious about that,” Xiao says, leaning down to kiss your cheek. “Besides, I’ve got days like these too. I know it’s hard to get out of these holes once you’re in there, but together we’ll manage somehow.” He softly smiles at you. “Now, how about I go and get you something to eat and drink, and then we’ll see what else we can do to make things a little better for you? Does that sound like a plan?”

You nod and slide to the side to let Xiao get up, forcing a small smile on your face. “Thank you.”

He kisses your cheek once more. “Nothing to thank me for. I’m just doing what I can to support my love.”
