animal of the week: harvestmen spiders❤︎
harvestmen, more commonly known as daddy longlegs, get their name because of the fact that they’re active during fall, which is the harvesting season. even though they can be considered a little creepy to some, harvestmen are completely harmless. they don’t bite, they aren’t venomous, and are no threat to crops. their only method of self-defense is by secreting a fluid which has a foul odor in order to deter predators. they also have the ability to shed their legs in order to escape from predators if they’re caught. harvestmen are typically the scavenging-type. they usually feed on insects and bigger animals that are already deceased. however, they’re sometimes predatory towards smaller insects.
