@entitysimp made a horrifying post and I felt it was my job to do the deed. And then several of my mutuals yelled at me. So then I extra had to do it.

tma + pokémon. that’s everything actually
[ID: three pictures of characters from The Magnus Archives with Pokémon. In order:
Martin Blackwood from the waist up, smiling and standing at a countertop on a white background. He is a fat, freckled white man with curly brown hair, round glasses and slight facial hair. He’s wearing a blue sweater vest over a pale periwinkle shirt. On the countertop is a Sinistea emerging from its cup - an amorphous purple Pokémon residing in a teal and white teacup. Perched on Martin’s shoulder is a Joltik, a fuzzy yellow spider-like Pokémon with blue eyes and toes, and beside Martin is a Cubone, a small, tan-coloured dinosaur-like Pokémon wearing a skull over its head. The counter has two other mugs placed on it - one decorated with abstract Pikachu patterns, and the other with a Lapras in water, its tail forming part of the handle. Martin says, “Here - uh, some new cups for you! I-if you want to try them, that is…” The Sinistea looks at the new cups curiously.
Sasha James from the waist up, standing in front of a desk with a laptop on it on a white background. She is a chubby person with sepia skin, dark curly hair and cats-eye glasses. She’s wearing a dark red turtleneck and a dark grey skirt. She smiles with her eyes closed and holds a cheery Mimikyu - a Pokémon of unknown appearance cloaked by a shabby Pikachu-shaped disguise - in her arms, saying, “Aren’t they cute?” Behind her on the screen, a Porygon2 (a duck-like digital Pokémon made of round polygons) sits comfortably on a pale yellow background. The image glitches back and forth to Not-Sasha, a thin white woman with long black hair and choppy bangs. She wears gold jewellery, a dark teal shirt and black skirt, and stares directly at the viewer with a dead-eyed smile. In her arms she holds a Pikachu with a Ditto’s face. Behind her on the screen, the Porygon2 has evolved into Porygon-Z, and looks very stressed by the glitching interface around it. She asks the same: “Aren’t they cute?”
Jon Sims sitting curled up asleep in his chair at his desk, worn out after a too-long work day. He is a thin brown person with scruffy facial hair, and long, dark hair tied up in a very messy bun. His glasses are off, and he wears a plum jumper and dark pants. Cradled in his arms is a small Espurr, a grey cat-like Pokémon with folded ears, sound asleep. On the back on the chair, also asleep, is a Munna, a round pink tapir-like Pokémon with a purple flower pattern. Between its eyes is a darker pink oval shape from which pink Dream Mist flows out in clouds. The room is dark, lit up by the overhead lights in Jon’s office while they all sleep peacefully. On the desk lie various papers, as well as a pink and green mug.
End description.]

We’re handwaving ‘’Jon and Martin’s bodies weren’t found’’ as some kind of mild kindness Jonny had towards the most hopeful of us and not a legitimate writing decision with full intent and purpose.
Like, I understand being cynical because we’ve repeated outselves ‘’TMA is a tragedy’’ to death but tragedy doesn’t ultimately means death-game-of-thrones-style. Yes, they could very well be dead but TMA has a history of ‘’no body = no proof of death’’ and the fact that the hope that they’re alive, the hope they had and the hope Georgie, Melanie and Basira stay with, the hope we stay with means something thematically and it’s undeniably a part of the story, not a last minute fix so the ending isn’t so bloody.

Something something even if the "can I have a cigarette?" line was intentional, I don't think it would mean something sinister. The line is originally so unsettling because it is such a mundane and human gesture. It is an act of asking for someone else to reach out and give kindness, and the anglerfish inherently corrupts that kindness. So for Georgie to ask for a cigarette, it brings back that original meaning. Instead of the sinister version we've come to know, we're back to its base intentions, asking for kindness between two people. Something so human in this corrupted world.

A new avatar of the Vast steps into the room.
This one is tall, with short, curly blond hair and pale skin. Its eyes are like twin suns, brilliant and terrible.
“Hello,” it says in a voice like the sea, in that it destroys boats, reefs, and small island nations. “It’s been a long time.” It smiles, mouth iridescent and full of perfect teeth. The Vast always smiles like that.
“I missed you,” says the other, tentative, grasping its hand.
“I missed me as well,” says the Vast. “I have so much to tell you. It’s amazing, really.”
“I wish every day had eighty years in it, at least one of them a long weekend,” says the other, “so that I could hear everything.”

besides jon's choice to live at the beginning of s4 the other thing that Never leaves my brain about tma is georgie's run-in with Death and how it's a metaphor for the way depression just. Steals whole emotions or aspects of your life and then you have to work around that gap and sometimes you have conflicting feelings about it. If you lie in bed for months and then wake up one day with your fear just torn out of you is that a wound or are you whole again? Is fear something you just didn't need? If a part of you is at peace now, then can it really be a bad thing, should you miss it, do you have the emotional ability to miss a feeling you can't experience anymore?
