thinking about how as Aemond’s wife you are the model of perfection.
Your back is straight as you curtsy when you first meet him and hair neatly braided with fine jewels. Your voice is even and never waivers as you speak to him of your family and how grateful they are for this union.
You are intelligent and beautiful, the perfect wife.
It’s why Aemond hardly ever spends time with you.
He bears no ill will toward you, of course. There is no resentment or hatred to his lady wife, but there are no fond feelings either.
He knows of courting and romance, his mother taught him everything from a young age. The poor woman would hold her son’s hands tight and explain that a man must not only respect his wife, but truly cherish her. Love her in the eyes of gods and men. As he grew older he noticed the way his father would wave off her constant advice and concerns until the dreaded night where she was the only one defending him after he lost his eye.
But practice was one thing. When you were nothing but a concept. A figment of Aemond’s imagination when he was ten and marriage was only spoken of during his lessons. Before he lost his eye. Before he heard the ladies of the court whispering about his mutilation and before he watched a whore flinch at the sight of his scarring when Aegon dragged him to a brothel on his thirteenth name day.
He learned then that no matter how much he would love and worship his wife, it would not be returned.
Rather than attempt to force it (he was no brute and had no intentions of doing something so cruel) he simply let you be by yourself.
Yes you were married. You sat by one another at every meal and formal event and on the rare occasion he would even ask for your hand in a dance. But Aemond’s affections toward you were few and far to find.
But there were moments.
Where his icy facade would weaken and you found yourself able to slip through the cracks.
Alicent had told you of his “moments” when the engagement had been announced. The queen herself taking you by the hand as you walked through the garden and explaining gently of Aemond’s condition.
“There are times where he feels a great deal of pain because of the-” She paused, chewing on her cheek while trying to find the most inoffensive way to describe the tragedy that befell her son. “-incident he had as a child.”
You knew enough of it. Many rumors flew through court the day Aemond targaryen walked in with a patch on his eye after Laenor Velaryan’s funeral at driftmark. Some day it was from a sparring incident, others say it was a mark he bore from the first time he mounted the mighty vhaegar. Others say that the Rouge Prince Daemon Targaryen himself gave it to his younger cousin after crude words were exchanged behind closed doors.
You didn’t know what was the truth. Aside from the day the princeling got his scar, was the same he got his dragon.
A fair trade, some would say.
But they didn’t live with the attacks he did.
Nerve damage, is what the maester’s called it when you asked them for more information. His wound may have healed years prior but the prince would continue to live his life with constant bouts of mind-numbing pain brought on by the slightest touch or too sharp of a wind to his cheek.
“Senseless fits.” Aegon called it. When he heard about your curiosity about his brother’s condition he had all but cornered you late at night in the hall. “Anything will set him off and send him throwing a tantrum like a belligerent child. It’s quite entertaining.”
But there’s a moment where the elder brother frowns and you see a shred of concern in his eyes.
“He doesn’t like to be touched during those moments. It makes the pain worse. So if you’re trying to find some way to comfort him I’d recommend you do something else.”
What was ‘something else’ you learned, was simply being there.
Sitting by his side when he curled into himself, trembling fingers reaching out to grab yours and not complaining when his nails dig into the palm of your hand as he cries out in pain. When his breath evens out and the pain subsides, he crawls to you and presses his face to the crook of your neck. He’s far too tired to cover the gnarled scar covering the side of his face but you show no fear or disgust at the sight of it. Your fingers run through his hair, gently combing back the silver tresses and ignoring the tears that stain the shoulder of your gown.
The next morning your husband would wake in your arms and takes a moment to watch your peaceful expression and the way the morning sun kisses your skin.
That day Alicent notices her son sits closer to you at breakfast, speaking softly to you of something she cannot understand. But when she sees his hand reach out and grasp yours, she smiles.

Kinda wild that the announcement teaser for Fate/strange fake's upcoming TV special (airdate Dec 31) already has nearly 1.3 million plays (views?) on Twitter. It's been up for less than a month.
Not wild because it’s a Fate property, obviously. It’s not even really wild that F/sf is getting a TV special; we all knew an adaptation was inevitable, the question was only ‘how long would one be held off?’ Nah, It’s just wild to me that this TV special will be the first major animated adaptation of one of Narita’s works since the Durarara!!x2 ended in 2016.
<snipping speculation re: the TV special and shoving it below the cut, since this post was just supposed to be a “wow this is wild” post.>
Man, if F/sf Volume 8 does come out in, say, January or February... I’m going to think happy thoughts and not “Baccano! Volume 23 top 10 betrayals” thoughts. I’m just going to hope the F/sf TV special will spotlight Ryohgo Narita’s name for mainstream western audiences and boost LN sales. On the one hand, it’s ‘just’ a TV special’. On the other hand, it’s a special seemingly hyped up by Aniplex and, uh, y’know, part of the Fate franchise.
Wasn’t F/sf the number 1 or top 3 ‘most requested anime adaptation’ in a poll a few years ago? That might account for some of the hype. Whether the special will lead to a 2023 summer TV anime like other Fate Dec 31 TV specials have, or whether it will be its own strange thing, the sheer fact of it finally happening is a Fate/strange feeling indeed..
It’s been pointed out that some other Fate adaptations have started with December 31 TV specials (Episode 0s) and gone on to have summer TV series, e.g. Lord El-Melloi and Grand Carnival. So...should we speculate this pattern repeats with F/sf? I haven’t really consumed anything in the Fate franchise and have little interest in doing so beyond F/sf, which I’ve been slowly and sporadically reading, so I’m not exactly familiar with precedent.
For instance, Fate precedent re: adapting incomplete source material. The LNs are at seven volumes so far and (though I’m not caught up yet) in the thick of the plot, and I’m not sure how a one- or two-cour anime would tackle adapting it. A two-cour anime would make more sense than one. Definitely not sure what a 24-minute TV special could accomplish, considering that F/sf is a bit like Baccano! with tons of stuff happening in one, two, three (etc.) days.
Maybe the TV special will be an hour long or something; that would make more sense. Aniplex announced it in a livestream, didn’t it? Hyped it up? Is it normal for Fate TV specials to get the amount of hype it feels like this one’s getting? Am I imagining the hype due to my Narita bias? A long TV special would warrant it. A long special is almost necessary if they’re planning to introduce characters with it, because the entirety of Volume 1 is character introductions and couldn’t possibly fit into a half hour.
Oh, hm, the special could feasibly function as some worldbuilding / backstory set up. I’m guessing that most if not all Fate stories review Fate’s conceit for hypothetical newcomers, which is what Narita helpfully semi-does in Volume 1 (thank God, since I’m essentially a newcomer). Narita’s twist on holy grail wars is new—I understand that pretty much every holy grail war in all the Fate derivates has gone awry / atypically since...the first series?—the setting (Snowfield, Nevada) is new... so a TV special ‘orienting’ viewers makes sense.
Except it makes sense only if the plan is 100% to proceed with a 2023 anime, so, who knows. R.L. (from the PSA teaser) and Ayaka (character’s VA returning) are both Volume 2 material, so... either the TV special is going to blitz through Volume 1 and end with R.L. and Ayaka as a huge cliffhanger / hype teaser, or possibly the special won’t function as a story episode at all and just be a compilation of ‘hype’ moments. That sounds... I mean, wouldn’t that just be spoiler central? I don’t buy that.
Precedent, huh. Also, since A-1 Pictures is handling the F/sf TV special, is it probable that A-1 would then handle a proper TV adaptation? Based on El-Melloi and Grand C., probably. Oh, wait, I forgot A-1 did that 2019 F/sf PV for the light novels—so make that ‘almost definitely’.
One potentially major aspect is that the TV special will have a simuldub, which, from what I’ve read, will be the first 1:1 complete simuldub of a Fate adaptation? Major for us since a simuldub will cast the spotlight on F/sf and concomitantly Narita’s name that much wider, even if the dub is terrible. The sheer novelty alone of a Fate simuldub may be enough to attract viewers. Er, beyond the existing big Fate audience, of course. I’ve also read that a simuldub was greenlit because F/sf is set in America (oh, Narita, you wag), but that’s no guarantee the dub will be any good.
....it’s also wild (well, weird) that I’m thinking this actively about an anime TV special, since I’ve barely watched anime these past few years. Could be that I’m aging out of anime, though, let’s be real, when I was an undergrad I was already more discerning. Could be that I’ve been in mental limbo ever since spring 2020 with the ‘advent’ (you know what I mean) of the pandemic and its affects on my grad school.)

Hello! I hope you’re having a nice day and I’m not bothering you. Regarding this post, I haven’t read Sarah Gristwood’s book so I was really surprised to see that it’s possible Henry didn’t have an affair with Mary Boleyn? I was wondering what the evidence is for this? Sorry if this is a stupid question, I’m still pretty new to Tudor history and I’m only just recently learning that most of the things I’ve read in historical fiction novels aren’t strictly factual.
I mean, it's pretty much what she says? The Latin has been interpreted in those two ways, but more commonly as alluding to Henry's sexual past with Mary Boleyn. It's not the first time Latin in a dispensation has been interpreted variously, either. The wording of the dispensation for Henry VIII to wed Catherine of Aragon is so questionable that hers remains the Bermuda Triangle of Virginities to this day:
“The word translated as ‘perhaps’ is forsan. Its root is fors (‘chance’ or ‘luck’) and its usual meaning is indeed ‘perhaps’ or ‘perchance.’ In this usage, forsan expresses a strong doubt about the marriage  having been consummated. But forsan is sometimes used to state a fact, just as in English we say ‘something chanced or fortuned,’ when we mean ‘something happened.’ In which case the meaning becomes the opposite: ‘This marriage happens to have been consummated.'
Make sense? No? Well, it didn’t clear things up in the 16th century either, so you’re in good company."
So, it's not a stupid question, but it's very hard to prove something didn't happen, she is just stating (as most do not) that we don't actually have definitive proof that Mary Boleyn was ever Henry's mistress. What we do have is a collection of circumstantial evidence, most of which, taken altogether (and this is my opinion, fwiw) makes that seem rather likely.
I think what's easier for your question is just to lay out all the evidence, timeline-wise:
A series of land grants given to her husband, William Carey. To me, this is one of the weakest of Eric Ives' arguments as laid out in his AB biography. Very circumstantial, Henry made land grants to a lot of noblemen.... it is true he granted many to Bessie Blount and her husband after her marriage (more often in her favor, and sometimes to his exclusion, which was rare, the same with her daughter). But, if we're following that MO for Henry, then these land grants, if anything, seem more likely to be granted, if they're in connection with Mary Boleyn, after their affair, not during, much like again, with Blount.
The dispensation request in 1527, this is generally treated as the "smoking gun": "Of this there is no direct proof, but the statement rests upon contemporary belief and chiefly upon the extraordinary terms of the dispensation granted to Henry to marry Anne Boleyn, which included the suspension of all canons relating to impediments created by "affinity rising ex illicito coitu in any degree even in the first." Here's, since it was asked, arguments against this specifically referring to Mary Boleyn-- some of them are decent (I do think the question of why would Catherine never bring this up is a salient one, the argument could be made that she didn't want to 'shame' her husband-- and she did always see him as her husband-- but I think by the point the hero-worship dimmed enough that she was actively petitioning for his excommunication, she surely would have brought this up, if she knew of it), some are weak. I brought up that 1504 dispensation because if C.O.A partisans want to claim the "perhaps consummated and perhaps not" does not mean anything and that it was just her parents 'covering all their bases in the wording to any objections that could possibly be raised in the future’, as one typically did with dispensations, then that has to apply here, too. Food for thought.
I mentioned earlier that since the focus is always on the 'first degree of affinity', the "second or third degree of consanguinity" is interesting, too. I believe it refers to a dispensation covering that Henry had a previous sexual relationship with one of Anne's first cousins. Looking at all the rumored mistresses altogether, I believe the most likely candidate is Elizabeth Carew.
This one is not spoken of much, I'm not going to dig up the specific quotes right now, but I do recall several comments by Chapuys in his dispatches that referred to the marriage of Henry and Anne being 'more incestuous and unlawful' than the former. He never specifically refers to Mary Boleyn as the reason for this belief, but I assume that was what he was getting at. If it was left at just 'unlawful' I would assume he was referring to bigamy.
To bring up Chapuys, a general argument is that this is what was brought up by the Aragonese/ Seymour faction. If they were clever, I don't think it was: "She is also advised to tell the King boldly how his marriage is detested by the people, and none consider it lawful; and on the occasion when she shall bring forward the subject, there ought to be present none but titled persons, who will say the same if the King put them upon their oath of fealty." So, I think if they understood Henry, they wouldn't claim the marriage was unlawful either because it took place while Catherine was alive (I don't think Jane quite understood how vehemently he felt about the invalidity of that marriage when she asked for Mary's reinstatement, but that came later), and they wouldn't claim it was unlawful or unpopular because it was known that Mary Boleyn was his mistress. Both of those things would have been critical of him, and he didn't really take well to that. In all likelihood, what they probably brought up was the rumors of precontract with Henry Percy...tellingly, that is the Achilles' heel Cromwell goes for during the Boleyn downfall.
Chapuys, May 1536: “ Yesterday the archbishop of Canterbury declared by sentence that the Concubine's daughter was the bastard of Mr. Norris, and not the King's daughter. This already removes an obstacle in the way of the Princess, who, I hope, whatever difficulty the King has made hitherto, will be declared true heiress of the kingdom, not as born of lawful marriage, but as legitimate propter bonam fidem parentum. Others tell me that the said Archbishop had pronounced the marriage of the King and Concubine invalid on account of the King having had connection with her sister, and that, as both parties knew of this, the good faith of the parents cannot make the said bastard legitimate." (I’ll repeat my point about no official document that exists about either, and Chapuys, as he was wont to do, sheepishly tucking his tail between his legs to admit his 1st statement was false in the next dispatch)
Reginald Pole [this is the blueprint for the narrative framework we generally get regarding Anne & Mary Boleyn, and often just the former herself], 1536: “She, indeed, has said she will make herself available to you on one condition alone. You must reject your wife whose place she desires to hold. This modest woman does not want to be your concubine. She wants to be your wife. I believe that she learned from the example of her sister [...] how quickly you can have your fill of concubines.”
Where did he get that rumor, one might ask, and why bring it up so late? I believe the point of connection was George Throckmorton, who he was in correspondence with. This was GT, when under suspiction of treason in October 1537: “About six or seven years ago conversed with Sir Thos. Dyngley in the garden at St. John's about the Parliament matters. Dyngley wondered that the Act of Appeals should pass so lightly, and Throgmorton said it was no wonder as few would displease my lord Privy Seal. Told Sir Thomas he had been sent for by the King after speaking about that Act, and that he saw his Grace's conscience was troubled about having married his brother's wife. "And I said to him that I told your Grace I feared if ye did marry Queen Anne your conscience would be more troubled at length, for it is thought ye have meddled both with the mother and the sister. And his Grace said 'Never with the mother.' And my lord Privy Seal standing by said 'Nor never with the sister either, and therefore put that out of your mind.'" This was in substance all their communication. Intended no harm to the King, but only out of vainglory to show he was one that durst speak for the common wealth; otherwise he refuses the King's pardon and will abide the most shameful death.”
Anyway, I believe Throckmorton probably relayed this incident to Pole via letter before Pole wrote (7), or perhaps Peto did during his exile. The immediate denial of the former has been viewed as tacit admission of the latter ever since.
(Thomas Dingley, btw, was “included in a bill of attainder passed under Henry VIII of England; another person on the same bill was Margaret Pole, Countess of Salisbury [...] accused, together with Robert Granceter, merchant, of "going to several foreign princes and persuading them to make war with the King".” One rather wonders, given the timeline, if Throckmorton sold him out, given Throckmorton was eventually cleared of suspicion)
Throckmorton also confirms where he got the story, which was Friar Peto: “Explains his conduct since the beginning of the Parliament of 21 Hen. VIII. Just before that Parliament friar Peto, who was in a tower in Lambeth over the gate, sent for him and showed him two sermons that he and another friar had made before the King at Greenwich, and reported a long conversation he had had with the King in the garden after the sermon. He said he had told the King that he could have no other wife while the Princess Dowager lived unless he could prove carnal knowledge between prince Arthur and her; which he said was impossible, as she, who knew best, had received the Sacrament to the contrary, and she was so virtuous that her word deserved more credit than all the other proofs; that prince Arthur's saying that he had been in the midst of Spain was probably but a light word; and that the King could never marry Queen Anne as it was said he had meddled with the mother and the daughter.”
As far as I’m aware, that is all the evidence that covers “contemporary belief”. My personal belief is that this much smoke ---> probably fire (it is interesting to note that in all these claims/accounts, there is never a mention that the Carey children are believed to have Henry’s paternity), but I do think his relationship with Mary Boleyn was probably brief, probably before she was married.
Considering all the heinous shit Henry ending up doing, I do find it funny that he was so embarassed about it, though:
Interrogatories to be ministered to Sir George Throgmerton.
First where he says "that it is thought, &c.," let him be examined whom he ever heard say any such thing of the King. (2.) Where, when, and why he spoke "those words" to Sir Wm. Essex, and what conversation ensued. (3.) Ditto with Sir Wm. Barentyne. (4.) Whether he communicated the matter to any other. (5–6.) Whether he thought the words true and why. (7–8.) Whether he did not think the words very slanderous to any man's good name. (9.) Whether he knew not that Sir Thomas Dingley was a man sometime travelling in far countries, whereby he might the rather spread abroad the said infamy. (10–15.) Whether he thinks such reports conducive to the peace of the common weal or fitting for a true subject to spread.

to no one's surprise, gojo knows almost everything.
for example, he knows that he's your best friend.
he knows that you like hanging out with him more than suguru (even when you fervently deny it), that you have to have your phone in your hand at all times or else you'll freak out, and that you prefer the smaller, simpler moments over grand ones. he knows that utahime's eyes look sharper and she looks happier because shoko gifted her a new eyeliner, and he also knows that toji's been working out because of the new girl that's in his math class, not because he's suddenly interested in leg day.
simply put, gojo knows everything about everyone.
"and then what'd she do?" he leans back on the bench, his finger flipping the pull tab on his soda cap as the wind scatters snowy air everywhere.
"we just talked afterwards," you shrug, staring at the other college students that are throwing snowballs at each other, "it was nice talking to her again, it's been a while."
"i bet. she's a fucking monster," he chortles before he takes a swig of his drink, guzzling down the lime soda like a starved man.
"oh!" your eyes brighten, and you look at him.
you can't help but burst out in laughter when you see his face, but you quickly compose yourself, keeping your smile in check, "she also said the funniest thing—she said that she thought you had feelings for me!"
his eyes widen in surprise, his jaw dropping ever so slightly. "that's wild."
"i know right?" you snicker, fixing your collar with your glove as puffs of vapor escape your lips. he joins you in raucous laughter over the hilarious misunderstanding, the chuckle bubbling up his lips at the notion of liking you as more than a friend.
"hahaha!"
"hahaha!"
his smile drops.
Tumblr media
"suguru, what do i do?!"
his roommate lies on the couch with a bored look on his face, his fingers swiping across his phone screen as he plays candy crush.
"just confess."
"i confess that i want you to die."
"if it's between you being a miserable pain in my ass and satan, i'm choosing satan, dude."
gojo raises an eyebrow. "why are you just assuming you're going to hell?"
"because i've associated myself to you." geto's lips quirk up to a smile as he hits a combo, the rainbow array of colors blinding his eyes and almost (almost being the key word) distracting him from the white hedgehog across him.
"help me out first, and then die later. c'mon, don't be stingy!"
"i literally already gave you advice, just tell 'em how you feel."
"...one small problem with that."
"what?"
"i—" gojo opens and closes his mouth indignantly as he tries to explain his feelings in a way that won't make geto violently ill. he raises his eyebrows before he gives him a smile that's as innocent as possible, "well i actually don't know if i like them like that? it was an in-the-moment realization kind of thing, but i'm actually still a little confused—"
geto drops his phone on his face, a thwack! permeating through the small living room as his roommate makes a squeak in horror, kicking his feet against the leather chair he lies on.
"are you fucking serious?" geto sits up immediately, hissing as the pale red welt on his nose confidently becomes less pale, his flip phone pathetically flinging off his shoulder onto the couch, "they literally can't do anything without you, i saw them forget how to chew on rice because you left them on delivered for two minutes, and you're a useless brick if they aren't always in your sight! you two have the most unhealthy relationship i've ever seen!"
gojo crosses his arms, glaring, and geto sighs, rubbing his forehead in annoyance. "...respectfully, of course."
"talk shit about them again and i'll skin you alive. i'm serious."
"that's literally my point."
"that doesn't mean you get to be mean! take it back!"
geto bites the inside of his cheek, staring at him with beady eyes. "for being so fucking observant," he says slowly, "you know nothing."
"what's that supposed to mean?" gojo's eyes narrow, suddenly on the defensive.
"haibara's been eyeing them up lately, y'know," geto shrugs candidly, "i think he's gonna say something soon. who knows? it might even be today."
gojo stares gobsmacked at the man in front of him, his jaw on the floor as he formulates his friend's own words; geto can even see the exact moment the lightbulb goes off in his head, and like a robot, he stands up straight.
"suguru, i need to go! good luck on candy crush!"
"sharon from quebec ain't got nothing on me."
by the time he finishes the sentence, his friend has already left the front door wide open.
Tumblr media
suguwu: don't make fun of him (y/n): ??? suguwu: you'll see
the key to your apartment unlocks itself, and right on time, gojo slams the door wide open, sweating and panting like a bulldog.
"what's this—?" you can barely get the words out before gojo grabs your shoulders frantically, tilting his head to stare into your eyes.
"i like you." he says confidently, "i was fighting for my life arguing with suguru, and i'm not even gonna lie, he fucked with me a bit, but i came out with a clear head, and i know i like you. so don't date haibara, he's a cool guy and all, but he's not right for you. a-and honestly, you'd be in a three-way with his best friend if you were with him, and that sounds like a nightmare."
you have no idea who haibara is, but you stay silent to let him continue speaking. he was always the more talkative out of the two of you (he's also the warmer of the two of you, which is confusing because his hands feel like ice against your sweater).
his hands go from your shoulders to your arms, and he swallows. "i'm usually not stressed when i'm talking to you, y'know," he admits, rambling on, "normally i love talking to you and it makes me feel really good and free, but i honestly feel like i'm gonna puke right now."
"did you take the train here?"
"yeah."
"aw,'toru!" you soften instantly, placing your hand up to his cheek. he melts against your touch instantly, his jaw leaning into your skin as he lets out a sigh. you frown at his negligence, "you know the train hurts your stomach, why did you do that?"
"i just really wanted to see you." he pouts, "like i said, suguru was really fucking with me."
"i'm gonna murder him."
"please do."
"...and satoru?"
"hm?"
it's really cute, actually—how he's forgotten about his very mission when he came here. you suppose you can't blame him too much, he's just arrived from his magical chariot (the train) after slaying the dragon (fighting the urge to throw up on said train), and every prince deserves a reward for his troubles. gojo especially, deserves a happy ending, and you couldn't be more honored to give one to him.
"i like you too, just by the way. yuki may be a monster but her intuition is amazing; i was just about to take the train over to your place, actually!"
he gasps. "but the train hurts your stomach!"
you smile sheepishly. "i guess i just really wanted to see you."
his jaw drops for the tenth time today, and he pulls you into a tight hug (he can't help it, his heart feels so full right now), burying his head into your neck, murmuring against your shoulder. "i love you, i love you, i love—"
