Istg the next time I'm in a fandom for something US-American, I'm going to include exactly one line in every fic I write that establishes that the characters regularly return Pfandflaschen. Everything else will be entirely geographically neutral, the entire fic could be set anywhere in the world, but that one line - which should never appear within the first third of the first chapter - will establish that the fic is inexplicably and for no reason at all set in Germany.

#/alternatively i could also make the whole setting blatantly german and never explain why #/one character is an exchange student and the other (the POV character) has one american parent.#/that's established once and never mentioned again. it has no effect on how the characters behave.#/they all eat brötchen for breakfast and bread for dinner every single day.#/like i could do that too but i think it's way more jarring to read a fic fully imagining the characters in their original cultural setting #/until you hit that one line that has them pay in dollar or go to olive garden.#[talk less smile more]#/i feel like i've made this post before but maybe i just dreamt that
