Olia and Teosh know who they will meet, the one Teosh had found and raised within their walls. Olia, of course, knows it's not only for pure research on the new species he may be, but also for family reasons.

The growing activity of the Galra empire, and the fact their ships continuously disappeared with no trace, had thrown them into a spiral of confusion and growing panic within the freedom fighters. causing their efforts to take an unwanted pause as they gathered themselves back on Kraydah. Their commander, Te-osh, had finally given the order for all ships to retreat for the period in order to figure out what was happening to their ships and members. Until the night the top pilot and her lieutenant left for their own operation to figure out what was happening Ozar had grown tired, fed up with waiting for an answer. So, he and Olia left, Olia more out of concern for their lieutenants' sudden decision behind their commander's back. though as they passed the fifth planet there wasn't any time to turn back. Especially when their radar finally picked up something's signature.

Omfg 😩 I meant Ozar but autocorrect got me and I didn’t reread it. Yeah, did you know that Montgomery said Olias was one of her favorite characters? Commander furbutt didn’t have plot armor relevance so much as favor of the ungodlies over here. It’s so unfair.

Timeline notes: Not applicable; after Matt is rescued from the Galra

A hard knock sounded outside the bathroom door.

Matt didn’t answer it.

Puking was more important.

He clung to the strange shaped toilet, arms quivering as much as his stomach, throat raw and face flushed and sweaty.

It was not the way he’d wanted his new team to see him.

He’d been free of the Galra prisons for barely a week and had been introduced to the Rebel unit he’d be working with under command of Captain Olia just that day and while he was still reeling a bit Matt had known without a doubt he wanted to make a good impression.

Vomiting up his insides was not a good impression.

His intentions had been good even as his gut told him not to eat what Te-Osh had been serving to the team; some sort of meat that honestly looked like raw chicken. But everyone else had been eating it and Matt had learned not to be picky and he wasn’t going to ask for an alternate option on his first day and come across as some snob.

Welp.

He should have asked for something else. 

Humans were clearly not meant to eat whatever that had been. 

He winced as another cramp assaulted his stomach, moaning low into the toilet bowl.

The knock sounded louder, along with a sharp bark of his name.

Olia.

His captain.

Oh no.

Oh no no no.

“I’m…” his voice was a croak. “I’m fine.”

He did not sound fine.

There was silence.

And then a bang and the door flew open.

Matt had the passing thought he was very grateful everything was coming out the one end at the moment because being caught sitting on the toilet would be even worse.

He didn’t see Olia, not daring to turn his head lest he projectile vomit in the small room, but he heard her sharp inhale and a noise Bae-Bae would make when he was in distress.

He doubted the smell of vomit was all that kind on likely her more sensitive canine-like nose.

But Olia was a captain and a damn good one who he’d seen even in the short day he’d known her cared about her team and so he wasn’t entirely surprised when a paw settled itself on his back even if it did still make him jerk and then groan as his stomach protested the movement.

“You are sick?” Olia asked softly, accent even thicker in the low volume.

Matt gave the barest shake of his head. “No. Just… just food poison—”

He broke off as his stomach gave another lurch and more bile spattered into the toilet.

“Poison?” Olia barked. “You have been poisoned on my ship?”

“N-no, not... not like that.” He carefully, carefully turned his head, finding Olia crouched right next to him and her face a mixture of concern, anger and confusion. 

“Not real poison. Just… my stomach didn’t…”

Her face softened instantly. “Ah. Te-Osh’s meal did not agree with you.”

Matt’s face answered that.

“I am sorry,” Olia murmured, her paw rubbing a circle on his back and Matt tried to pretend the tears stinging his eyes were from his stomach because the action was too reminiscent of his mom and God how he missed her.

“‘S fine,” Matt choked out. 

“What can I do?” Olia murmured.

“Um, I, I need to stay… stay hydrated,” Matt managed.

“Stay here,” Olia rose, as though Matt would do anything else right now, although his lips twitched at the command. “I shall fetch water and tea.” Her paw left his back but came to rest on his head, giving it a gentle pat. “We will make this better.”

And as Olia left and Matt hunched fully back over the toilet, stomach still rolling but settled at the same time with the warm words, he knew things would be.

And maybe…

Maybe his first impression hadn’t been so horrible after all.

MATT HOLT:  SPACE TIMELINE  (up until his appearance in season 4)    //    HC .  

1 )   matt, shiro, and sam are taken prisoner. they’re kept in the same cell for a week while the galra scientists and druids run tests on them, trying to figure out the anatomy and capabilities of this new species in their custody. at the end of the week, sam is taken away and isn’t returned.  2 )   matt and shiro are assigned to work jobs on the prison ship. they are shuffled around, and sometimes they’re separated. most of the time, however, unless one of them misbehaves, they’re in the same, incredibly small cell. they usually work on different crews, given their different physiques, but they usually end up at the end of the day together. this lasts for a month. it’s at this point that matt, shiro, and several other prisoners are transferred from the prison ship to another, much larger ship that houses an arena.  3 )   after shiro saves matt from the arena, matt is immediately taken away. the galra do minimal stitching/reparation on his leg, then he’s sent to another work camp, concentrated on manufacturing galra land-cruising vehicles. matt is kept at the work camp for seven months. while there, matt becomes a medic for the camp, translating what he knows of biology from his studies and advanced degrees and bullshitting his way through the rest of it. the other prisoners don’t mind because anything is better than the druids or the rough prisoner ‘doctors.’ he’s also promoted to a tech position at the camp. he works under a cruel and violent engineer as his assistant, and the galra is the one who gives him his scar across his jaw. the position, however unpleasant and painful, puts matt in a perfect position when rescue finally comes.  4 )   when the rebels break into the work camp, they come looking for a specific engineer: a female olkari who was of great value to the rebellion before her capture. when the rebels arrive, the olkari has been dead for some days. they break into the main engineer’s office, where matt is cleaning. he convinces the rebels to take him, based on his own tech and engineering skills, as well as on his learned skills as a medic. they rescue him and three other lifeforms, on the promise that they’ll work and help the rebel alliance. olia and te-osh are the rebels who take matt under their wing, training him to fight and giving him support as he heals up and puts back on weight he lost in droves during captivity. matt fights alongside the rebels in a general capacity before his promotion to communications base commander four months after his rescue. matt is stationed at said communications base when he is finally reunited with pidge.

its so refreshing to see other people acknowledging how *young* shiro is. i feel like, there's a tendency in the vld fandom to view "adult" characters as a homogenous group, as though everyone over the age of 20 suddenly has their shit together (maybe this is because the fandom is quite young, on average). there seems to be little distinguishment between an adult such as coran and an adult such as shiro, when in reality these two would be in very different stages of their lives.

I think this is actually a common attitude you see sneaking around in a lot of stories, where, you are either a teenager or younger, or you’re an Ancient, Sage Mentor, and, as a result, it creates a lot of weirdness.

On the one hand, you have a problem that I think the Sonic series is awful for, where character ages feel like really arbitrary weird numbers. Yes, no two people are the same or develop at the same rate but Tails does not act like an eight-year-old. Why is Rouge, a government-contracted espionage agent that owns her own club on the side, eighteen? You can’t wave your hands and say every single person in your setting is a prodigy, here.

Often coming hand and hand with this, though, is the idea that anyone older than twenty is a sage, veteran adult who is also forcibly shuffled out of the plot and out of importance, because a great message to tell people is if they don’t have their magical life-changing adventure while they’re still a teenager or younger, their life is over.

The thing about VLD is… these people are young. And nobody really wants them to be there. There’s a reason Coran is so worried about these people’s welfare- he’s six hundred years old, which, developmentally, for Alteans, seems to put him in somewhere like his mid-fifties. He looks at the paladins, all of them, and sees… kids.

But the reality of this situation is the empire doesn’t care if their enemies, and these kids have a better shot armed and fighting than they do sitting there waiting for the empire to come after them.

That said, the empire itself seems to normally hesitate at employing young people themselves- at bare minimum the commanding elite appears to consist entirely of… the actual age range you would expect of military commanders. They’re all middle-aged and older, and this is considered normal. Lotor is an exception, but Lotor is in a uniquely abusive situation- Zarkon’s not going to permit his son to have a normal childhood, and Throk even calls Lotor a “brat” and cites it as a reason Lotor’s unfit to lead, and shouldn’t be doing this- “Why is he not at his father’s bedside?”

So even the empire- while Haxus claims and later opponents not even hesitating at Pidge or the other paladins supports that they don’t care if their enemies are young- for their own people, do have age standards. And by those standards, Lotor is young, the paladins are young, Pidge, at fifteen, is “a child”. Hell, this applies even to other organizations: with the rebels, Captain Olia seems young, but Ozar and Te-Osh seem older, and having a handful of youthful prodigy characters out of a much larger organization is a lot more realistic than “nobody here is old enough to buy a drink in the US.”

Kolivan would seem to be an old man, suggesting he’s spent most of his life working to his position as leader of the Blade.

By the Garrison’s standards, Shiro is not the kind of person who should be leading missions- he was on Kerberos under Commander Holt, who was a far older man. If everything else hadn’t happened, he might’ve moved up into the commanding ranks of the Garrison…. by the time he was forty.

TL;DR I think popular media has desensitized us to the concept of prodigies and given us really weird standards about what we think is a “reasonable” age so I’m not all that surprised people misconstrue Shiro as a Wise, Sagacious Veteran and not a young adult.

Pidge has Matt's old haircut omg

I think it’s adorable!!! :3 :3 :3

It’s also fascinatingly short-sighted on Pidge’s end. Remember the entire reason Pidge GOT the haircut: she was trying to find Matt by infiltrating the Garrison under a false identity. Iverson said she was never allowed again on Garrison property, so she had to fool the Garrison into believing she was someone else. While the concept of disguising herself as male is not a bad idea - they’d be less likely to be suspicious of a male cadet entering the Garrison - the fact she cuts her hair in almost the exact same way as Matt’s is… not a good idea. 

I mean, it makes her far less inconspicuous.

The Garrison isn’t going to forget Matt any more than they will forget Takashi Shirogane (and Commander Holt, of course). At this point, everyone in the Garrison will know the names Samuel and Matthew Holt. Even if people were not familiar with the Holts when they were safe and well on Garrison property… everyone will be familiar with the failed Kerberos mission’s publicity. Everyone now will have seen the photographs released during the announcement of their deaths. Katie cutting her hair akin to Matt’s has the risk of her sticking out more, because now she looks like her brother who’s in a released photograph that has circulated not just the Garrison, but the public news.

Seriously. A new cadet walking into the Garrison, male or female or any gender, who looks just like Matthew Holt… that’s pretty darned suspicious!

It screams she’s related to Matt. It doesn’t matter if someone just makes the assumption, “Maybe Matt has a brother.” Any connection of Pidge to Matt is exactly what she doesn’t need.

Frankly I’m surprised that Iverson could have an entire conversation with “Pidge Gunderson” about needing to be attentive and alert to avoid a similar Kerberos mission incident… and not pick up the fact that this cadet looks wayyyyy too much like one of the very young men on the Kerberos mission. Not to mention this cadet is very touchy about comments about that mission, too!

It’s debatable whether or not Pidge intentionally cut her hair to look like her brother’s. On one side, there’s nostalgia, and reminding her of her purpose to find him. On the other side, looking in the mirror would hurt. It could be the case that she just chose to cut her hair short, and because she and Matt have very similar hair, hers ended up just naturally looking like his cut. But as soon as she saw that she looked like her brother… well… Katie could have fixed that and cut off even more. A shorter cut would have helped her avoid being an exact Matt-look-alike.

Even the addition of the glasses is not the best way to disguise herself. Matt wore that very pair during his time at the Garrison until the corrective eye surgery. Sure, it makes her look less like Katie Holt. But again, it makes her look like Matt Holt. I would say that maybe the haircut was accidental, but that the glasses were worn for the sentiment, and that regardless of whether or not it made her more visually suspicious, she just had to wear the glasses her missing brother gave her. 

She had to carry around the photograph of her and Matt the day he left. She had to wear the glasses Matt gave her the day he left.

And regardless of whether or not she intended it, she totally got the same haircut as her brother.

Not going to lie, I was curious how they were going to handle Matt’s reintroduction because Katie’s haircut would make the two siblings look *so* similar. Even an alien, Te-osh, who probably wouldn’t be good at attuning to human facial differences, confuses Pidge and Matt in “Reunion.” Matt’s growth spurt, facial scar, and lengthened hair, however, make the siblings look obviously related but not confusable!

The freedom fighters of Voltron really should of had more screen time, they had their moments and they obviously did what they could to defend and at least slow some of the Galra’s power, but we don’t exactly get a ton on them. We do get scenes of them and their actions (begin the Blitz, Reunited, e.t.c-brief mentions/moments) it still feels they were done dirty. Te-lash obviously seemed she would have been a important member to the show if they hadn’t killed her off. (S trope to which I hate). It could have changed the story line, or maybe it wouldn’t have.

Te-ohs was the commander/leader of the freedom fighters and could have been around for hundreds of years (not too sure of how long her people live to). Building a record of successes and influence for smaller rebel groups. If she wasn’t killed off she could have given more information to the paladins and Matt. They may have ended up parting ways for Pidge to find Matt or aided them in her venture to find him. Leading to the paladins meeting the commander of the freedom fighters and possibly having a better grasp on the inner workings of the Galra empire (I’d assume she and Matt have some sort of close relationship -my guess is almost a parental one?)

Other notes I wanna just- have out but I haven’t exactly planned an actual thing to talk about them with…yet

Te-lash could have given them a hand in planning in the attacks on the Galra outposts, possibly giving an advantage to the freedom fighters when engaging. (Olia and her could work off one another as well)

Kolivan and Te-osh could have interacted and may have been able to know our (if she hadn’t known) that the cannons would have had extra shielding. This may have given them an idea and plan better then going head in. ((Kolivan may not have trusted the fighters before since he could have not had much of an interaction with them or real leader to speak with,

Olia and Ozar could have had more interaction with the paladins, thought this would disrupt the activities in future season they would have more intel and may have been able to change the events that would lead up to Lotor’s downfall. (Like a ripple it could have had them do something different from what they choose to do and how they found out certain things. Like the butterfly effect basically is what I’m saying.

The relationships and inner workings could have been seen more- the found family moments or bonds. (But seeing what happened to that with the paladins…

Anyways, I’ll make something more stable and might actually realize I’m wrong about stuff here, my brain is getting a bit fuzzy and all over the place again- ha

Matt shook his head. “Look at us.” Pidge turned to him, melancholy morphing into confusion at the grin spreading across his face. “Two of the biggest nerds from Earth, defending the universe.” Pidge returned his smile, and let out a soft giggle. Matt’s heart felt full enough to burst. He hadn’t realized just how much he’d missed his little sister’s laugh.

A buzzing jolted Matt out of his much-needed nap. The silent alarm had been triggered. Bolting upright, his eyes scanned the surveillance monitor by his makeshift bed. An intruder. Ah, was it too much to ask for to get a few hours’ break? He grabbed his staff, fastened on his mask, and ran with a swiftness his friends had trained into him towards the command room.

The intruder had his back turned and was examining Matt’s main monitor. Gritting his teeth, Matt raised his staff and swung. The intruder ducked, and the battle began. He was a good fighter; Matt would give him that. They attacked each other with practiced intensity and Matt felt himself settling into the eerie calm of a fight. He was alert of the intruder’s every movement to predict what his next one would be—fighting was all about recognizing patterns and… he recognized this intruder’s. Eyes narrowing, Matt realized he was somehow familiar with the intruder’s build, his mannerisms. But it didn’t matter. He shook himself and readied for another blow and—

“What have you done with my brother?”

The face glaring back at him through that visor, that voice... Matt’s grip slackened on his staff, and the intruder took that opportunity to strike with his—her—weapon. Matt grunted as he was knocked backwards, the mask flying off his face. He got to his knees, hearing the buzz of the intruder’s weapon. He should’ve been moving, but his limbs seemed to be locked. He raised and turned his head to face his attacker. She stopped. Her weapon was inches from his neck; the ferocity melted from her face instantly. Matt swallowed. It was a face he had given up hope on seeing again outside of his dreams.

“Pidge?” It couldn’t be. It was impossible. He must’ve been hallucinating.

“Matt?” The voice was small and broken, but it instantly warmed Matt to his core. It sounded like home.

Thoughts reeling, muscles numb, Matt had his sister clutched in his embrace before he could process it. He choked on a sob, tears streaming down his face and not caring one bit.

He had so many questions. He was sure Pidge did, too. But just as his mind was about to wrap around the fact that his sister was a fucking paladin of Voltron, a sinister voice interrupted. Matt and Pidge dropped into fighting stances in unison, facing the new intruder, apparently here to collect a bounty on them both. Because of course the universe was allergic to giving Matt a break.

“Stand back, Pidge.” The words were out of his mouth before he registered that his sister had told him to do the same. They exchanged a look of surprise mingled with pride. Pidge grinned.

“Let’s show this guy what the Holts are made of!”

Matt nodded. Well, then. Together.

“So, tell me more. How the heck did you find me?”

Pidge stared ahead, busy piloting the Green Lion. Piloting the Green Lion. His sister was so cool, agh. She and the Lion moved as one seamlessly, Pidge’s fingers flying over the controls with practiced ease and expertise. It was like watching her back when she used to hack into security systems and secure databases for fun. But about a million times more surreal.

“I never stopped looking. That story is just as long as the one about me becoming a paladin of Voltron,” she said, glancing over at him with a halfhearted smirk. She dropped it, turning back around. “Well, the latest lead led me to your friend. Te-osh. She… she gave me her transponder to track you, because, well, she—” Matt inhaled sharply as his sister seemed to fold in on herself. He knew what was coming. “She gave her life to the rebel cause, Matt. I’m—I’m so, so sorry.” Pidge’s voice broke, and Matt let out a long, shuddering breath, his eyes stinging. He had a feeling this hadn’t been Pidge’s only time witnessing a death firsthand.

“She died as she would have wanted to. Te-osh was a hero,” he murmured, grief settling like a familiar deadweight in his chest. He’d lost so many friends fighting the Galra. He’d seen so much. He knew that his sister had, too. And she was only fifteen.

Pidge took a deep breath. “Yeah, she was.” She cleared her throat. “So I used the transponder to follow your code, and it led me to—it led me to the grave marker you’d left.” Pidge visibly swallowed. The Green Lion hummed, as if in distress. “I thought you were—Matt, I thought—”

“Katie,” Matt choked out, rising out of his seat. She turned to him, eyes welling up. He knelt and wrapped his arms around her, tears prickling hot in his own eyes. She’d changed—she’d grown—so much. They both had. The Green Lion was still, hovering in space, and it felt like it was just the two of them in the entire universe. Brother and sister, reunited under impossible circumstances.

Pidge was trying to collect herself. “It—It’s okay. It’s okay, now. I remembered your—your two-step encryption, and I found you,” she stammered.

“You’re absolutely incredible, Pidge. Our generation’s Einstein,” he joked with a watery chuckle. He meant it. He meant it more than he had ever meant anything before.

“I missed you so much,” Pidge whispered, arms tightening around him.

“So did I.” It seemed like they’d stayed there for a simultaneous eternity and instant when one of Pidge’s controls beeped. She pulled back to glance at the notification.

“We should probably keep moving."

Matt nodded and returned to his seat. They traveled through space in silence, each lost in their own thoughts. About ten minutes later, Pidge spoke up again.

“We’re almost there.” She paused. “I think you’re gonna really like everyone.”

Matt shook his head. “Look at us.” Pidge turned to him, melancholy morphing into confusion at the grin spreading across his face. “Two of the biggest nerds from Earth, defending the universe.” Pidge returned his smile, and let out a soft giggle. “Ta-da!”

“So, I guess your clutter habits haven’t changed at all,” Matt said in bemusement as Pidge gestured at her mess of a room.

“Oh, come on. Coran makes us keep the rest of the Castle-ship spotless. This is my territory. I can do whatever I want here.”

“Clearly,” he said dryly. Pidge stuck out her tongue, because she was mature like that. Matt watched with a smile as she hopped around her many projects littered on the floor towards her bed. The whole space screamed Pidge. The floor was littered with tech and laundry she hadn’t had time to stow away, because obviously the only things worth organizing were encrypted files. There were a few water bottles scattered here and there, pictures of their family and the other paladins tacked up on the wall beside some diagrams and blueprints, a string of fairy lights—for the aesthetic, Matt supposed. And on her bed, two laptops. Sleep had never come before research for the Holt siblings.

“Come over! I want to show you this thing I’ve been working on.”

Matt grinned and made his way over. It was wonderful to see that despite everything she’d been through, Pidge had retained her infectious, overenthusiastic energy. He flopped down on the bed beside her, leaning against one of her pillows while she leaned forward, laptop perched on her crossed legs. After a few milliseconds of typing, she turned the screen to face him. Matt’s eyes widened.

“So I’m making this thing* for Shiro because—well, you saw his arm, right? I don’t know if he had it before you guys got separated. Anyway, it’s Galra tech, which has been pretty helpful in the fight against the empire so far. But I just thought… I figured he wouldn’t want it anymore when this is all over, you know? So I’m working on a new one I can give him whenever I can get all the materials I need, and right now I’m coding some features that I think he’ll find pretty useful, and—”

“Pidge, this is unbelievable,” Matt breathed. He looked at his sister, pride shining in his eyes. “Shiro’s going to love this. And this could completely revolutionize prosthetics back on Earth.”

“I know!” Pidge was beaming and bouncing where she sat. “Once I’ve worked everything out, I’m planning to put it on the market back home so that the design can be used to help veterans and other amputees.”

“My god. Man, I always knew you would surpass me, but you couldn’t even wait until I’d graduated?” He’d planned to go back to school after serving a few years with Garrison. Pidge rolled her eyes good-naturedly.

“Matt, you’re never going to graduate with that attitude. Not to mention the fact that we’re in space. And about a million light years away from any college anywhere. And you’ve already gotten more experience in space than any college could offer.”

“Touché.” Matt ruffled Pidge’s hair, which was now ruffle-able. He still couldn’t believe his little sister had chopped off all her hair into the same haircut Matt himself had worn the last time they’d seen each other. It was almost like looking into a mirror. “So, I know Shiro, of course. Tell me about the others.”

Pidge perked up, if possible, even further. “Oh yeah, sure! So, there’s Lance, whom you’ve already met. He’s a real jokester and always flirting with other people, but he’s probably one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet if you can catch him when he’s serious. He definitely has a crush on Keith, who’s definitely crushing on him back. Keith is part Galra and is training with the Blade of Marmora right now. He used to be the the pilot of the Red Lion, but then he piloted Black because Shiro disappeared, but then Shiro came back and now he’s piloting Black again, so Keith is just sticking with the Blade. Oh, and Lance is piloting Red now. He used to pilot Blue, so now Allura—the princess—is piloting Blue. And Hunk pilots the Yellow Lion. He’s super friendly and an amazing cook and makes Altean food actually edible, and he’s also an engineer so we tinker with tech stuff together a lot. Now Coran and Allura…”

The more Pidge talked, the more relaxed Matt became. It was like proximity to his little sister was softening all the rough edges the war had carved into him. He felt like a kid again, listening to Pidge ramble on about her day at school, about some cool article she’d found online, about her plans for getting into Garrison. He was never going to lose her again. He couldn’t live without her.

“Oh, wait!” Pidge cried, springing to her feet. Matt’s gaze sharpened as he sat up.

“What?”

“I completely forgot to show you the lounge!” And they were off.

Matt followed his sister out of the Green Lion in the Castle-ship’s docking bay.

“That was so. Frickin. Cool,” he gushed. “Do you do that every day? What is your life?”

“I know! This is pretty much a normal Tuesday for us paladins,” Pidge said, nudging Matt with cocky nonchalance. They looked at each other and burst out laughing.

“Well, we have been doing a lot of publicity stunts lately,” Pidge said once she had caught her breath. “To boost morale, or whatever.” She made a face.

“Those shows are of vital importance to our cause!” Coran piped up, apparently ending the serious discussion he was having with Shiro and Allura. Lance was nodding in agreement.

“He’s right! These shows—”

“Yeah, yeah, we know. Razzle-dazzle,” Hunk grumbled, but he was grinning. He and Lance continued their bickering as they made their way out of the docking bay, Pidge joining the conversation with an effervescence that made Matt’s chest hurt where he’d locked his heart away for his own survival when he’d been separated from everyone in his family. Lost in memories, he didn’t notice that Shiro had hung back until he felt a hand on his shoulder. Matt flinched reflexively, then relaxed when he saw who it was.

“Sorry, I—”

“I know. Don’t worry, it’s fine. Can I have a word with you?”

Matt glanced over at his sister, who was walking and bantering with her friends. “Uh, yeah, of course. What’s up?”

Shiro took a deep breath, and suddenly he looked his age. A young man in his early twenties, leading an intergalactic war against the empire that had held him captive, forced him to kill, and taken his arm. “I just wanted to apologize for not being able to rescue you and your dad sooner. I—”

“No, no. Shiro, you saved me at a huge cost to yourself. Don’t think I’ve forgotten that,” Matt interrupted. “I should be apologizing to you, not the other way around.”

Shiro let out a low chuckle. “Alright, let’s agree that we both have a lot to be sorry for.”

Matt smiled. “Hey, I’m just glad we’re both safe. And I don’t think I ever thanked you for looking after Pidge. She’s… she’s everything to me and you kept her safe and sane in the middle of a war.”

“I didn’t have to,” Shiro said, his eyes brimming with a quiet pride that Matt knew very well. “Your sister is absolutely amazing, Matt. She’s saved the lives of everyone on this team countless times and never lost her spirit.”

Matt’s heart was overflowing again. “I know. As cliché as it sounds, she’s not so little anymore. They grow up way too fast.” He laughed. “God, I sound like my parents.”

“That’s not a bad thing,” Shiro said softly.

“I guess you’re right.” Matt cleared his throat. “Well, shall we rejoin the others, sir?”

Shiro smiled. “After you. And hey, did we set up a room for you?”

“I think I’m going to stay in Pidge’s room tonight. Don’t really want to be separated so soon after our reunion, you know?”

Shiro nodded and seemed to see right through Matt. Seemed to know that every night Matt had the same nightmares—nightmares of losing his family, only to wake up and find that reality was just as bad.

“Of course.”

After being stationed on his own for so long, the quiet hum of various alien machinery and periodic beeps coming from Pidge’s projects seemed deafening. Yet they still weren’t loud enough to distract Matt from his thoughts. His sister had drifted off a few minutes ago, her head resting on his shoulder and her laptop screen glowing dimly. Matt pressed a kiss to the top of her head and moved to lift the lensless glasses from her face. She kept them all this time. It made Matt want to cry and hold his little sister forever.

It was funny. He’d resigned himself to living his days out in deep space, working against the Galra empire until he died. He’d been prepared to die for this cause. But now all his old wishes of going home and adopting a peaceful, normal life came rushing back like a tidal wave that wouldn’t let him up for air. He’d shoved aside all his feelings for a reason. Now, with his sister in his arms and victory within sight, there was no way to hold them back.

And honestly, he didn’t want to.

And honestly, despite all the pain, all the loss this path had brought him and his family, he wouldn’t trade it for the world.

His sister, his Pidge was a warrior for the universe, and he was so proud of her that it felt like the pressure of it was going to make him explode. And soon they would find Dad. They would. And then they would return home to Mom, having made a difference in this reality and seen more than they ever would’ve thought possible when Matt was still a kid teaching his little sister derivatives. 

Matt was determined to have everyone he loved back again. And it wasn’t so impossible. He had Pidge now. And with her, he’d found hope.
