The story of Philip Kohler and his epic overland adventure
by Martin Port
When Philip Kohler left his native South Australia in 1955, his sights were firmly set on the UK, yet his continued appetite for travel eventually led him to Northern Rhodesia – a move that would ultimately see him fulfil a deeply held desire to complete a solo crossing of the Sahara desert.
With only his thoughts and the mechanical outpourings of his Series II Land-Rover for company, Kohler spent three years traversing his way across a remarkable continent that was in the midst of revolution and change – documenting his journey with his trusted Leica camera – before arriving back in London in the latter half of 1962.
The adventure provided not just new experiences, but also shaped the rest of his professional life – his photographic ability, as well as a chance encounter with John Wayne, resulting in a hugely successful career in the international film industry. Lavishly illustrated with the beautiful photographs that he took along the way, and written by award-winning author Martin Port, this new book from Porter Press International tells the story of Philip Kohler and his trans-African Land-Rover.
A unique collection of photographs and documents that charts Kohler’s journey from Australia to Europe, including superb colour images of 1950s London.
The epic story of Kohler’s overland adventure across Africa and Europe in his 1959 Series II Land-Rover – one that was undertaken without sponsorship or assistance.
Illustrated with more than 300 photographs – most of which are in beautifully preserved colour – that Kohler took along the route, including a solo crossing of the Sahara desert.
The full story of Kohler’s encounters with Paramount Pictures and 20th Century Fox while in Africa, which led to him working as location/production manager on nearly 40 films, including The Empire Strikes Back, Full Metal Jacket and numerous Bond movies.
How this remarkable one-owner Land-Rover, which remained with the family until 2016, made an emotional return to the road after 20 years of inactivity.

The Author
Martin Port has owned and run classic cars for 30 years – from humble Morris Minor to AC Buckland and Porsche 912 – but his overwhelming passion is for classic Land-Rovers.
Since buying his first as an antidote to Porsche ownership, he has travelled through Europe and North Africa at the wheel of various examples and has been the proud owner of the 1959 Trans-Africa Series II since 2016, using the 63-year-old example as his preferred daily mode of transport.
Martin has been working as a graphic designer, writer and photographer since graduating from art college in 1993 and was Classic & Sports Car’s art editor for 16 years before embarking on a freelance career in 2019.
He is author of JUE 477: the Remarkable History & Restoration of the World’s First Production Land Rover, Mini Scrapbook: 60 years of a British icon and JCB Scrapbook: celebrating 75 years of engineering innovation, and designer of Camel Trophy: The Definitive History – all published by Porter Press International.
He has written for Land Rover Monthly, Classic Land Rover, Classic & Sports Car, Octane and Magneto and is editor of the Series 2 Club magazine, Built 2 Last.

Why am I inspired by Richard Long? / Reflective memories.
While I was getting know Richard Long and his career my memories began to trigger. I thought this would useful for my blog because I felt like I wanted to express my feelings which relates a similarity both our pasts’ youth; and creativity.
Before I could do my research on Richard Long I watched a documentary film about him travelling in the Algeria Sahara I was surprised for the first of his adventurous landscape work that I never knew someone could see or create before. Also, there were two quotes I remember from Long: “ The memory and walk I carry experience with the others” and; “I like having this control between visibility and invisibility.” I did not quite understand of what he meant until there were memories triggering in my head way before COVID-19. Very soon I did some further research about him as I took notes. However I do have some similarities from him I may not have the same skill of what does as his gift but I am fond of environmental art, such as collecting scraps of papers, pictures from timeline magazines, copies from photo scans, newspapers along with food vouchers; and chocolate wrappers. So they can be used as collage or mixed media and be put into scrapbooks. Even turn them into paper beads for jewellery designs as one of my hobbies. As we, both want to encourage people to be inventive and make a change to the state of the earth. But it was not the only thing it inspired me of his environmental work. The other part of the story was about his past, therefore we were both once our school’s well-know artist as it reflects back to my youth experience from secondary school, except we were brought up in two different timelines.
During my teens I came from a secondary school for children with learning disabilities which I have autism since the age between 3 to 4 years old. I was one of the students who was well-recognised as the school’s artist that I would spend my days drawing through breaks and class sessions. Despite my artistic ability I have many talents, such as knitting, crochet and acting while I was in drama school on every Saturdays with my siblings. The whole school would encourage me to draw the students, teachers and their families from photographs. Also, design the front and back cover of the Sixth Form’s magazines, cards for special occasions, the school’s diary covers, yearbooks and student leavers t-shirts.
Overall, there were times which were the happiest and saddest moments as it feels like listening to Ed Sheeran’s Castle On The Hill when it takes you back of being young again. Either a child, a teenager or a young adult.
