Quill Character Introduction

The self-insert finally has a name! I can't believe I'm making an intro post for an OC, let alone one kind of like a self-insert, but here we are! ^^'

Quill, or as she/they was first known as: OC Em, is the writer of everything that happens. They use a feather pen given to them by Mun God to write the story and make it come to life, and Mun God provides inspiration and advice for what should happen next. Yes, the feather pen is the reason anything Quill writes comes to life

She's very anxious and high strung, so Mun God typically takes charge of the world to ensure the storyline is followed. (Think of Markiplier's The Host, but less...cold? More just no-nonsense).

Mun God and Quill were together once upon a time, but have since separated. They have several children and grandchildren (the askers/anons) together. They have joint custody of all of them and do their best to work with each other to keep everyone safe and happy.

Quill misses when she and Mun God would watch the stars and talk, laugh, and imagine the future together. Those days are gone now... But Quill can at least keep their family happy and show them that they care.

Mantis blinked, frowning when Pietro said he thought she was prettier. She felt bad for the Terran speedster; it was his first time in space, with no preparation whatsoever, so naturally his biology would be a bit messy. Of course he would be confused and disoriented, speaking nonsense, and Mantis’ expression turned sympathetic, her hand gently patting Pietro’s shoulder. Feeling quite a bit surprised when he said being pretty wasn’t a competition. Mantis knew that. She didn’t think Gamora was pretty in a competitive kind of way, but in a ‘no wonder Quill forgot how to speak when he first saw her’ kind of way. The way Mantis saw it, Gamora was precisely the reason why beauty shouldn’t be a competition.

Then he started talking about Vision, and… Mantis could tell Pietro did not like him. He was unable to see anyone other than Ultron, who wanted to make things better. Oh, anyone who said they could make things 'better’ or 'nicer’ or 'perfect’ - especially that last one - was someone the Guardians couldn’t trust. Mantis knew it well. Life on Ego’s planet seemed so absolutely perfect. To say that perfection was a red flag would be an understatement. “He wanted to destroy all of your planet?” Mantis covered her mouth with a hand as Pietro described his near-death experience. Stars, how was he even alive? She could feel the panic growing in the air between the two of them, and she knew it wasn’t coming from her. When he lifted his right hand, Mantis gently took it, holding it between her hands as she tried not to let his agitated state worsen. “Please don’t yell, it’s–” A wince twisted her features as she felt a sharp pain in her own right hand. His anger and fear flooding through her like a riptide.

When he apologized and his eyes fell, Mantis just felt sad. How long had he been holding all of this in? “It’s okay…” She softly rubbed his palm and the back of his hand with her thumbs, ignoring the way her own hand hurt. “Have you ever told your sister about this?” Maybe Pietro refused to tell Wanda because he didn’t want to worry her, or because he knew she was in love with Vision. But clearly Pietro didn’t feel listened to, although Mantis didn’t think Wanda or the Avengers were to blame; perhaps Pietro struggled with communication. “You’re frustrated… You feel as though you try to understand the perspective of others yet no one ever tries to understand yours. But is that how things are or just how you feel?” Mantis drew little circles on his hand with her thumbs, tracing small imaginary planets. “I don’t think your sister started dating him in order to upset you. I’m sure she was terrified of losing you when you were so hurt. She probably was… conflicted when she realized she had feelings for him. But did Vision ever hurt you? Vision himself, I mean. I think you should judge his actions, not Ultron’s. In any case, you are far away from him now.”

She gave him a reassuring smile before letting go of his hand. She thought about using her powers to help him calm down, but she had already altered his mind a bit so he wouldn’t have nightmares the next time he tried to sleep. From the way he started recalling his painful memories and getting agitated, Mantis could confirm her belief about Pietro’s system being altered in space, distorting his idea of beauty along with everything else. When Pietro grinned as she offered him the soup, Mantis momentarily thought he was doing it because it was so unhelpful compared to his problems it was funny. But when he thanked her, she felt her shoulders relax and fall back into place. She gave him space to eat, looking out the window and wondering why he had grinned like that. Maybe it was the idea of eating, given how hungry he said he was all the time.

“We will have to make sure we get extra food for you, then. The good thing about space is that it’s never too early or too late to eat. You can eat anytime.” Her antennae twitched with excitement when she spotted a faraway comet, her eyes widening. “Look!” Pointing with her finger, Mantis stepped closer to the window; the light reflected in her pitch black eyes, and she just beamed at the small celestial body. “One time, Peter tried to pilot and watch comets at the same time, because there were so many of them. But he was able to focus when he had to maneuver the ship to dodge them all. The way we all screamed… You wouldn’t believe it. Groot and Drax loved it. I loved it, too. I thought it was a fun ride.”

{ LOL, it’s perfectly okay, my tag system is a mess anyway. I create all these very nice tags in a nice organized system... and then proceed to forget to actually put them on posts. Mantis... really seemed to not like compliments, or eve positive references to herself. That was throwing Pietro for a loop. It was part of how he functioned socially that he should very often try to raise others up out of whatever might be bothering them. There had been a lot of downtrodden people in Sokovia. The war had taken its toll and people were hungry, tired, sick, frustrated, sad, angry, you name it. It made Pietro feel good to offer kind words, encouraging ones, or simple compliments and watch people’s faces light up with just a little  bit of hope or positivity. But with Mantis... it seemed to have the opposite effect. He made a mental note to try and stop doing that around her, since he didn’t want to upset her, but that was hard do when she was so adorable and helpful to him.

Pietro tried to shake off how uncomfortable talking about Ultron had made him. In his therapy sessions while with the Avengers, he’d always refused to talk about Ultron. He hadn’t wanted those sessions at all, but they were required. Required was another word for forced. “Not the planet itself, but just all the people on it. The humans. For some reason he thought a world full of robots would be better? I don’t know, it was such a stupid idea. He said that when the dust settled, the only thing living in the world would be metal.” It was ingrained on his brain, not only the bot’s words but the sound of his voice. 

“Sorry! I’m... I’m sorry... I didn’t mean to yell. Please do not be scared...” he said when he saw her wincing. What kind of a jerk was he, yelling like an idiot in front of this poor person? “Sorry, I won’t... talk about that anymore...” he said, embarrassed and ashamed. He fell silent when she told him it was okay and started rubbing his hand. It... felt nice, having someone touch his hand kindly like that. He usually didn’t let anyone touch it, and it wasn’t like Mantis had asked first, but somehow he was perfectly okay with it. He let her read him however she wanted, admitting to himself that she was spot on with her accuracy. Was that the way of things, or was he maybe getting to emotional about it? When she asked if he’d told Wanda about his hand, his eyes widened and he shook his head. “No, no, I never have. I never will. Is very... Is kindof... The reason why is bad like this... It was not her fault, but she would think it was. So I can’t tell her because I don’t want her to blame herself.”

And out it came, the story of his right hand and arm. He never felt free to tell it to anyone before, but since Mantis had asked if he’d told Wanda, he felt like he should explain why he’d keep something like this from his own twin. “When our parents were killed, we hid under a bed while our apartment building collapsed around us. We were ten, so we were pretty small, but over time the bed kindof got crushed, so it was very tiny space for us both. And Wanda, she was sick as a baby, so she has trouble with her lungs sometimes. Well, she did when we were little, not so much anymore. I guess she grew out of it. Anyway, there was lot of dust in the air from the building getting crushed all around us, so I held onto Wanda to make sure she had enough space to breathe and I let her breathe through my shirt so she wouldn’t be breathing all that nasty dust. But... we weren’t found for two days, and holding Wanda in that tiny space... she was kindof leaning on my arm and it lost feeling for a long time. When we were found, my arm was all purple and it felt funny for a long while afterward. That’s when it first started hurting and everything and sometimes it would shake by itself.”

“So then we were in an orphanage and then foster homes and none of that worked out, so we ran away and were living on the street for a while. We needed to eat, so I would steal things for us and for Wanda especially because she was small and scared and not as fast as me. One time I didn’t do such a great job and I got caught by a guy who stuck a pocket knife through my hand, pinning it to the table to try and keep me there for the police, but I ran away with the knife still in my hand.” He chuckled, as if it were funny and not the terrible hardship that it was. “We didn’t have money for the doctor, so Wanda did what she could for my hand, but it got infected and I almost lost these fingers. They swelled up and turns all funny colors.” He pointed to his thumb and index finger.

“And then when Hydra experimented on us, they thought it was a great idea to stick the I.V. port in this same hand, like... really? You see is bad, why would you put it there? But they did, and I got another infection. They had to cut part of my skin and whatever else out so it could heal. By then the shaking and the numbness was pretty bad, but I hid it from Wanda still. Then I told you Ultron shot through this same hand. Is really bad now, sometimes I can’t grip things with it because it just seizes up on me.” He sighed. “Anyway... Wanda would blame herself for all of it. For leaning on my arm when we were ten, for me getting stabbed while stealing food for her when we were fourteen, for what Hydra did because it was her decision for us to join their experiments, and then for Ultron because she kept saying that was her fault too. I just... don’t want to lay all of that on her. She has enough problems. Is my own thing to deal with, so I deal. Is just part of life for me,” he said, shrugging again like it was something easy and trivial when it was anything but.

“No, Vision has never hurt me...” Pietro admitted. “And I don’t think he would, as he is now. But I worry that there is something in his mind that will someday just click like a flipped switch and suddenly he will be Ultron. I don’t really understand robotics or digital things or brain things, so I don’t know how any of that works, but like I said, I saw Ultron uploading his mind into Vision’s through some kindof neural link. So... it’s in there somewhere, right? Ultron’s mind? What scares me is... when will it come out and what will it make Vision do when it does?” To Pietro, it was a very real thing that not only might happen, but definitely would someday.

The soup was actually really good, and Pietro was grateful for it. He sat down nearby to indulge himself in it. “Then I think I am going to like space very much if it lets me eat whenever I want,” he said with a little smirk. When she pointed out a comet, Pietro set the bowl of soup temporarily aside and jumped up excitedly to see it, peering out the window. “Oh, wow! That’s so cool!” he exclaimed, a big, boyish grin on his face. Listening to her story about Quill’s piloting, Pietro chuckled. “Hey, is part of life, you know? Even when things go wrong, you have to laugh and roll with it. Find the good and the fun where you can, yeah? It sounds like that was a lot of fun,” he agreed with her.

i used to rp a lot with fleur and when she pulled me into her ‘inner circle’ it was insane the way she made me (and two others. she pulled me into trio on two separate occasions and apparently it’s something she did a lot) crave her approval. i cut off all association with her when i realised what type of person i was becoming but looking back on the things she pulled me into makes me in no way proud of the person was and i massively regret helping fuel her spite in an attempt to get her approval. im not brave enough to come off anon and deal with the backlash from talking about fleur but i just wanted to let you know that you aren’t alone 💖

i've come to realize she likes taking a couple of "like minded" people ( literally could just say you find one thing x muse did irksome and you're in ) under her wing and then pulling some fucked up shit that, with the echo chamber established, you often find yourself agreeing or seeing things through her perspective more than ( usually ) your own. then, once done with you because you no longer offer her something she wants ( a ship, complete validation, staying out of her way for a ship, etc ), she'll either try to use your fleur-fogged words against you in some way or just be a fucking two-faced nightmare. so it's super telling that she kept you close with two trios that you were both part of, and i'm sorry that she put you in such a position.

you're totally right though, about who you're corrupted into becoming in tandem with her warped narratives, and all it does is make you question everything when the fog starts to dissipate. like, why did i let that slide? why didn't i press further or be more neutral on x situation? did i do right by my other mun friends, my muses and myself? or did i just feed into her narcissism and petulance? it's hard to cope with, especially as somewhat-adjusted adults who have watched the rpc or other communities online go up in flames because of people like her and thought we knew better, especially as ( speaking for myself here ) someone who's been through the fucking ringer with fleur-adjacent people irl and online and actively tries to learn from those experiences just to find myself there all over again.

that being said, it's so fucking easy to want to blame it all on her, but you do have to own your role in those situations – which is something she'll never do, as she never sees herself as the problem, and that makes me feel a thousand times lighter as it just proves you aren't like her. you aren't a horrible person for wanting to believe someone you considered a friend, a confidant, what have you. you aren't a horrible person for not catching it early on, as even the most skeptical people can be manipulated should someone plays their cards right. you aren't a horrible person for anything that happened, but you were at one point complicit, and acknowledging that and feeling remorse for it? that's what makes you better, better than her and a better version of yourself.

and it's totally okay that you don't want to come off anon, you aren't alone in that because i know others who don't feel comfortable being exposed to her nonsense again – hell, she's blocked on my disc for the same reason and i already fessed up to sending an anon or two alongside some proof when her name was brought up last week. i guess i'm just beyond caring, like anons sent by her and other shit stirrers don't hurt me at all, even if my anxiety appears initially because of fucking course it does, my meds don't even do much for me anymore anyways GKDKGKD but that's all to say that this shit isn't about her, it's about other people who can fall victim to her antics and then feel silenced because her friendly façade overtakes a gc, who end up in these trios as well and feel as though the other person is there only for fleur and will take her side over yours ( which is usually utter bullshit, trust me ), who then become her topic of the week to all of her servers, group dms, etc with conveniently cropped screenshots and fairy tales that make her look like a victim and you psychotic.

Thoughts on the character: i admittedly have only a vague idea of what squall is like in ffviii vs kh. kh was actually my first exposure to any ff characters and i didn't give a rat's ass at the time bc the game was sooo hard for baby me lmao. but by the time kh2 came out i was completely enamored with squall and just...how put together he was. organizing chaos, rebuilding his home, not putting up with anyone's nonsense while looking out for his friends...

Have you interacted before: yep! here and there.

Favorite part of portrayal: i haven't interacted with your squall/leon as much as i would like, but from what i've seen you absolutely nail his dead-pan reactions to whatever outrageous thing is happening around him at any given time. i'm not even really sure how to describe what make him so ...leon to me because it's something i admire when i see other rpers who can fuckin nail it lol. like he somehow has an infinite amount of patience for idiocy but also zero patience for bs at the same time.

One piece of advice: none to speak of for the moment. i think in a past meme i mentioned that i have honestly seen your writing style and skill mature and grow so well over the past few months. to that i would say...keep it up! i have totally seen the level of depth and care you've put into your posts improve so much and i hope everyone can appreciate it as much as i have

Robin would be an interesting fellow, so depends at what point he came into my life, haha. Basically, Yes overall. I'd probably see if he worked in a poly situation with my husband, although with Robin being a massive bitch sometimes I'd wonder how that would work out. Anytime before that, probably very close if not a slightly bumpy road. literally i have plot in mind in character for Felix to tell him to get over himself, so I imagine I'd have less patience and show tough love even sooner than that- capitalism really drives my manager/bossy side out out of self respect jfkdlsfjl lmao He's kind of Cis Gay Nonsense, the muse, even if affectionately so.

As for Xander, no, absolutely not at first. I'm very picky about how people choose to act, like You Always have a choice, dude. But supports and canon, and how other people talk to and about Xander kinda suggest that there's more to him than the surface level so....good potential. loosen up a little, buddy.

I'm a little Kamui minded, but.....he's so cheesy, I can't take it sometimes. My muse is just....lil default man is hilariously default. Absolutely friends, without a doubt, but i'd probably be laughing at him sometimes.

🟡 Yellow - What is the best motivation for you to write your muse?

I like to get Pit vibes, usually when I think about existentialism, or my place in the world. I find his traits pretty similar to mine, actually. Short king, loves hot water, nerd. come to think of it, lots of responsibility too. Physical traits pretty close as well. But, like, I'm also a victim of suicidal ideation and extreme isolation, which was right when I got the game in the mail from a BFF, add two plus two on that one. But, also, when i wanna nerd out and get reminded of his existence, hell yeah i'll put this Mr. Sunshine on my dash.

As for Robin, the fucker invited himself into my life. He writes himself, I did not expect, or even plan to have him on my blog, ever. Like, psychologically speaking, I know where he draws from and his themes, though. Coming out, substance usage, navigating general relationships, Dragons and Daddy issues, and the gay community in general. Robin is a character who, coincidentally, I have a lot in common with, so how i got a default version is beyond me;;; Bonus points for localization, You could probably tell, but @lueurxtactique mun and I are always comparing our muses' portrayal, and how Americanized Robin ended up, with canonical differences and implications from the OG Japanese with Reflet there. A fair amount of some of this is how Robin is a very masculine character, who may struggle some with internalized toxic masculinity, compare to Reflet who is more boyish, and picked on for being childish. I could write a literal whole series of headcanon posts contrasting the two, it's interesting cultural and characterization shit!

But, I'm actually demotivated a lot of the time, because he can be very embarrassing and personal to write; He's a muse that literally demands self-indulgence to write out his musings. He's the one with the crush on kitty first, so him having two primary love interests and being so fixated is like....Buddy. Dude. Babe. Please don't make me grab the water bottle; But it's usually when I can't take it anymore and notice it's been like 5 years since when the musing was supposed to take place, and i'm like....okay, alright, time to stop putting this off.

I love my boy! I keep intending to do a starter call, so mooties muses can get to know him, he's just kind of a loner and the timing for starter calls is tricky, people have to actually.........See them. lmfao. But yeah! high muse!

Sonic opinions - 2

In large portions of every fandom, it looks like it prevails the idea that you can only take one of two positions: praising the story in every respect, including both the ideas themselves and their execution by the writers, or admitting not to like the story and not to praise any element of it at all. I think my ideas regarding the Archie-Sonic comics and the Sonic franchise in general cannot be pigeonholed into either of these two extremes.

I loved all the world-building in Archie-Sonic, the elements the comic introduced, their many characters and the potential to tell stories about them; I also really liked much of the art and personal styles of several artists Archie-Sonic has had throughout its history, with very few exceptions (and such exceptions include Ron Lim, of course). That's why, of all the Sonic continuities, I often use the pre-reboot Archie-Sonic comic as the primary source for world-building elements and story ideas.

What really makes me feel bad about that comic, what motivates most of my criticism, is the ideas’ execution by the main writers, as well as aspects that I think are more linked to each writer as a person, the unique way in which each of them has written their stories.

Firstly, Michael Gallagher: the writer for the first few dozen issues of the comic had a terrible sense of humour, and this hurt the comic hugely since those first issues were fundamentally based on that low-quality comedy style. The characterization of the entire cast also suffered greatly from this; in Sally's case, something quite ironic happened too: Gallagher portrayed her as bossy, annoying, temperamental, usually bickering with Sonic, and now that's also how Sally is seen by many fans of the videogames’ continuity (at best). Other than this, not much more could be said about him.

Karl Bollers wrote quite decent stories with some nice comedy, with “Return to Angel Island” being his best work, one of the best stories in the entire comic and perhaps even one of the best in the franchise; but Bollers’s work was "torpedoed" by Ken Penders and then-editor Justin Gabrie, which ruined the stories’ final versions sometimes or led to elements introduced by Bollers being "retconned" and overwritten by whatever Penders smoked and decided to do when taking over. The characterization of Fiona Fox is one of the main examples, with Bollers's Fiona being a quite under-utilized character but with a great potential that would later be wasted by both Penders and Ian Flynn. Another similar case was Sally breaking up with Sonic: Bollers tried to give context to such a drastic decision by Sally and show how she was the one who was suffering the most at that time and also that both she and Sonic were partially right, but Penders and Gabrie didn't let Bollers develop this subplot properly and all we had was a quite infamous scene that unfairly made Sally one of the most hated characters. It’s also known of several plans Bollers had for future stories, and one of them was Antoine being corrupted by the Source of All and turning into a villain; this had the potential to be a good story by subverting the concept of the Source of All and making it an actual threat, but on the other hand, it’d have meant resorting once again to the resource of "this character isn’t doing anything, let's make them evil", something quite disappointing, which later would have disastrous results when Flynn did the same with Fiona a few years later. However, these plans of Bollers were just ideas, and the quality of a story created from them still depends a lot on execution. In the end, I can't say anything about how good or bad Bollers was as a writer, simply because I have no way of knowing what his stories would have been like if he had been given more freedom and had stayed as the writer longer.

There were two writers who influenced Archie-Sonic comics far more than any other writer in its history: Penders and Flynn. The first of them was a retarded pervert with an overly inflated and fragile ego. He became obsessed with the primitive, toxic ideal of "family" North-Americans have. He wrote nonsensical, contradictory stories, having already decided the end down to the last detail long before even thinking about how the story would come to that end (I also made this specific mistake a few times when I was just starting to write fanfiction, I must admit). He increased Fiona's age in order to be able to pair her with the Don Juan that Sonic had become, which also ruined Fiona's characterization forever. The issues 150s -right before being replaced by Flynn- were the worst part of Penders’s run, as Bollers was no longer there to put a stop to his madness in any way, and it was at this time when there was the most egregious case of Penders pouring into the comic his worst perversions and retarded ideas: he hinted at a sex scene in one of the most infamous cases in the history of the entire Sonic franchise, although it wasn’t infamous for the implied sex per se but rather because what happened was technically a rape by deception; to add insult to injury, the writer implicitly blamed the victim some years later when asked about it on Twitter.

I could go on talking about “Ken Perverts”, but I think that's not necessary and would be a waste of time since, as everyone here already knows, he's been the laughingstock of the entire Sonic franchise for years; @ponett even has a whole secondary blog, @thankskenpenders, mainly dedicated to this. On the other hand, there’s still another writer who has also contributed a lot and also made huge mistakes but is not criticized in the least by almost anyone, simply because he was better than Penders.

Ian Flynn usually reduced the characters to slightly oversimplified portrayals, similar to the personalities of the characters in the most recent videogames. Under his pen, Sonic was more sympathetic but his words sometimes sounded too empty and shallow, his apologies for past mistakes didn’t lead to genuine changes on his part, and sometimes he even seemed plain insensitive to all the tragedies happening around him, especially at the Mecha Sally Arc (I nickname Ian Flynn’s Sonic "Plastic Smile" for this). Admittedly, this had already happened several times with previous writers (Penders portraying Sonic as a Don Juan, as I already mentioned), and this is why I think the original Sonic from Sonic SatAM was always better for feeling more "genuine", less "empty", and more heroic and likeable as a result. Perhaps the only ones to escape the oversimplified portrayal have been Shadow and E-123 Omega, whose characterizations in Archie-Sonic were the best in the whole franchise.

Besides, Flynn had strong favouritism for Amy Rose, which only made things worse because this Amy was much more similar to the one in the videogames from Sonic Heroes onwards. Anyway, this also happened with previous writers, like when Amy wished to be younger at the cost of a chance to save Sally's mother and no one ever berated her for it.

Let’s look at the villains. Unlike the typical Eggman from the videogames, with his follies, eccentricities and other absurd aspects, the Robotnik “inherited” by the comic from Sonic SatAM was explicitly a genocidal bastard and crueller while at the same time being sane enough to realize everything he was doing (@robotnik-mun already spoke in detail about this once); however, Flynn tried to combine the two characters into the pre-reboot Archie-Sonic Eggman, and the result created some severe problems with the stories’ tone. Something derived from this was how Sonic let Eggman live and even felt sorry for his fall into madness, in addition to treating him as if they were the Sonic and Eggman from the videogames, Sonic X or Sonic Boom; it’s worth remembering this Eggman technically is a sort of reincarnation of the SatAM Robotnik (his exact nature is quite complicated and includes parallel universes, but yes, he’s supposed to be exactly the same as the SatAM Robotnik, with memories and everything) and this Sonic is supposed to have fought a bloody decade-long guerilla war against him just like his SatAM counterpart.

Scourge was turned into a massive Mary-Sue who achieved easy victories, as subtle as a huge neon sign saying "the bad guys win"; he was also an abusive manipulator towards Fiona Fox, and Flynn was unable to show that properly for fear of making his pet look no longer cool, which makes you wonder how alike Flynn and Penders might actually be in some ways. To clearly understand the horrible damage this has caused: it not only created a generation of young Sonic fans -mostly boys from the USA- who romanticize abuse either consciously or unconsciously, but also there are even women -including scholars, committed feminists and transgender people who are also activists for social justice- who either sympathize with Scourge or think Fiona made a right, wise, rational or informed decision by joining him in the story (I’ll not give names of those women, I’m not really eager to get into heated fallacious discussions about “the true meaning of Feminism”); to top it off, among the writers who started working with Ian Flynn either on IDW-Sonic or the last years of Archie-Sonic, there’s at least one person who got the job of writing official Sonic comics after gaining quite a bit of fame with a fan-comic where they used the pairing of Scourge & Fiona to inspire its readers to feel sorry... for Scourge. And speaking of Fiona specifically: the subplot of her career as a villain was ill-conceived, was built by using as a cornerstone the A-story of Issue #150 (that quite infamous and widely known story written by Penders where Scourge may or may not have raped Bunnie by deception), and was also seemingly "abandoned" as Fiona ended up merely being Scourge's new abuse victim girlfriend and her status as a traitor didn’t even have a significant emotional effect on the Freedom Fighters.

Flynn also followed something like a pattern of taking tropes from famous works and then using them when writing the comic but not actually understanding why those tropes had worked in the first place. Perhaps the prime example of this was Scourge giving Sonic the Joker's "One Bad Day" speech: it almost felt a bit like giving the same speech to the Batman of Batman vs. Superman, as Sonic had already had a whole "bad decade" and was still a hero despite it; also, Sonic's answer to that speech (telling Scourge it only takes a tiny bit of selflessness and decency for him to be a good person) wasn’t that great, not at all compared to the mildly masterful answer Batman had originally given to the Joker in The Killing Joke, and it even made Sonic look more like a bad judge of character.

Lastly, the entire Mecha Sally Arc was poorly planned, had some contradictions with itself and with previous stories, was stretched through dozens of comic issues no matter if that felt forced, and the main events and plot twists throughout the story arc were heavily based on shock-value without giving any substance to this or making it a bit more sense when putting it under scrutiny; meanwhile, Flynn always seemed to have quite a hard time when writing long story arcs, so these long stories looked like he was trying and outright failing to imitate Toriyama (someone quite known for putting together stories ad-lib according to what seemed most convenient at the time).

Despite this, it looks like those Sonic fans who are still interested in material outside of the videogames will keep buying and reading whatever Ian Flynn or one of his colleagues writes, simply because they’re better than Penders... even though it's been 15 years since Penders wrote something official about Sonic. Seriously, we should have gotten over it by now, instead of continuing to compare all material in the franchise with Penders's work, which sets the bar too low for any official content creator. Now that I think about it, Penders's work is to the North-American Sonic canon what Sonic 2006 is to the videogames: people can criticize the latest games all they want, and rightfully so, but if someone even casually mentions Sonic 2006, any Sonic game from 2010 onwards instantly becomes a masterpiece just for being marginally better than Sonic 2006; the same happens between Penders's work on pre-reboot Archie-Sonic and any other North-American Sonic comic written by Flynn after Penders left.

Right now it looks like it's also forbidden to criticize Flynn as a writer at all just because he's much nicer in his personal life and engages with fans more directly through his podcasts, or because Flynn is truly progressive while Penders claimed to be progressive and a feminist and was affiliated with the USA Democrats but his work showed how misogynistic, perverted, retarded, reactionary and downright sick he was. Also, now saying something about Flynn other than total blind admiration for him and his work, even asking for the Freedom Fighters to return in the IDW comics, has become synonymous with agreeing with those assholes who cry "Rally4Sally" or "Udon4Sonic" on Twitter: "nostalgic" fans of SatAM and Penders's work on Archie, in their 40s or 50s, deeply conservative and absurdly paranoid, who claim that those new inclusive cartoons such as Steven Universe or She-Ra "are ruining their childhood", are mad at Flynn just because he hinted Sally and Nicole may be a lesbian couple (and in a rather platonic way, not even romantic in the traditional sense), and try to justify their own warped ideas and fantasies about SatAM by ignoring any “liberal” political messages SatAM may have had at the subtext level.

Do you gravitate toward certain characters? My brain initially says no but I'm pretty sure if you look at my muse list, 90% of my muses fit into one of the following categories (all of which require therapy tbh):

Emotionally Stunted Numpty* — I'm talking repressing feelings, being completely oblivious to their own feelings, claiming that they have no feelings because they're too strong/badass for that nonsense, refusal to talk about trauma in any respect because it's in the past so what's the point, putting everyone else's needs before their own, self-loathing, anger issues, distracting from feelings with sex, alcohol, drugs, or any other self-destructive behaviour

Charred Cinnamon Roll — May have some of the trauma that the Emotionally Stunted Numpty has but may not. Could be anywhere from lightly toasted to cremated, but still manages to be a ray of sunshine to everyone around them and is just a blessing

Irredeemably Evil Manipulator — Bad guys are fun to write, particularly smart bad guys. I have no intention of giving them a lighter side or an AU where they're not evil, they're just here to screw things up and cause drama

How do you get your muse in the zone to work on asks/replies? I'm definitely very auditory focused, so I generally need to be able to imagine the sound of their voice and I'm good. Sometimes that means listening to them in a youtube video to get it in my head. For the muses I write the most though, I tend to have go-to phrases that I can easily imagine hearing them saying and once I can hear it, I'm off (Franky "She killed Iman Farah", John "I love you, Mrs Solis", Robin "So what do I do now?", Delia "She says she's my friend and it's making her cry", Bridget "Oh, baby", Zara "You look at me like I am nothing").

Raven came into my ims and lashed out at me for agreeing with the post that was giving them criticism…. I never said one bad thing about them… They and their friends started to stalk me. They called me a bully. also I’m started to worry they were going to stalk my girlfriend’s blog and my closest friend’s. ;-;

Oh god...Anon, I'm so sorry, what the hell? And I do not say that in disbelief, unfortunately. That very much checks out with other things I've been told and have seen proof of, so I'm certainly not going to act like that's not the case.

I guess the only person on tumblr who they're afraid to speak to is that rules mun. Probably because that mun does have a legitimately vicious attitude and publicly does not react well to being attacked. Which, I'm not suggesting anyone do that lol I'm just saying that it's awfully telling that the people who get obstinately harassed by them and their group are nice, chill people. What a nice checkmark on this laundry list of bullying indicators!

In their mind, agreeing with any criticism about their actions is saying something bad about them. It doesn't matter how nicely put and fair the criticism might have been, that's going to be spun as you bullying them. While you're lashed out at...while they're publicly playing every victim card that can be found.

They've been doing that to anyone who expressed an opinion that wasn't glowingly positive of their bullshit behavior at any point, and there's so many points to pick from. That's why I was worried enough to seriously advise people to be careful about interacting with my blog with their RP urls. Not something I should ever have to do, that's insane, but I don't want my blog being used the way I've seen the blogs of RPers who disagreed with them on that post used. As well as other RPC related blogs. Any opportunity to find people to vilify and terrorize.

So, I obviously feel like your concern is valid if I had the same concern myself.

I just wish I knew what to tell you to do about it. I can hope all I want that Raven is going to stay on their blog and choose to be a better person by not continuing this or condoning it, but that doesn't seem promising, and I'm so sorry. It's so much worse to be concerned about people you care about being called out and bullied like that than it is to have it happen to you.

Have you spoken to your girlfriend and close friends about this? Since they came into your ims, I don't know if any of this was made public. If you haven't talked to them yet, I'd advise doing so. I know none of us want to drag people into our problems, none of us reasonable adults trying to enjoy ourselves anyway, but this is a different situation than something like disliking or having a bit of a problem with another mun. It's something that could negatively impact their mental health at the worst, ruin their time on their blogs otherwise, so it shouldn't come out of nowhere at least. Giving them a warning would be a good way for them to be prepared.

If you receive further nonsense from any of them, and have not already, block. Advise those you're worried about to preemptively block all associated blogs in that entire friend group. As we all know, tumblr's blocking is a bit of a joke, but it's better than nothing at all. Tumblr's reporting system is even worse, I don't know what would even qualify as serious enough for tumblr to reprimand a user, but I've yet to see it. If they bother you, it might at least feel good to do that, but don't do it with the expectation of anything actually happening.

Should any of you receive hate anons or callouts, my best advice is to show no fear. Be upset, be afraid, that's okay! But don't show it. Either do not engage with those things at all and all of you be committed to acting like none of this is happening, thus not ruining your time in the RPC, or you can all be committed to turning everything said into a total joke. Don't bother refuting any accusations too seriously, it won't make any difference to them outside of them using what you say against you in some truly nonsensical and hypocritical ways. They don't have to play by any rules, but you'll be held to shifting standards that only they're allowed to apply. Just stick to the attitude of nope, not today, satan in anything you choose to respond to.

If it does happen, you have each other and that's important. I'm extremely sure that at the core of all of this, there is one to two people only. Their power is in the ability to hype others up on outrage and misinformation to get them to attack people. As someone else pointed out, their callouts and such aren't exactly swimming in likes and reblogs and support. People are tired of this, and that's your power!

You actually have relationships with other people that exist. You can support each other in this, you don't need to lie or attack people like they do. It's going to be okay if you keep cool and stick together, Anon.

I hope any of this made you feel a little better or gave you some ideas on how to handle this if it happens. If you need anything, you can always drop in again. I support you, and I'm sure that a lot of people reading this do too. In fact, you likely did a good thing for others by sending this; due to the accusations and bullying, there are several people who feel isolated in being attacked and unable to speak about it. It's always a good thing to just not feel alone.

Individually, all we can do is be picked on. Together, even if we don't know who anyone else is, we're stronger.
