Today is a 37st anniversary of the Chornobyl Nuclear Plant disaster. It's hard to talk about one unprocessed national tragedy while living through another.

The Chornobyl disaster was totally preventable and it took away countless lives of people living in the region, especially in Ukraine and Belarus - both the liquidators and the civillians. Despite the very air and dust being literal poison, the soviets had not only hid this information from the people, but forced everybody to partake in the May the 1st parade - because god forbid we lose our face before the international community as a working class paradise! If not for the nuclear scientists in Sweden who raised the alarm about the dangerous levels of nuclear particles coming from northern Ukraine, who knows what would have happened. It definitely would have been swepped under the rug and forgotten by the international community, together with its victims - just like Semipalatinsk in Kazakhstan is barely known abroad.

With russia constantly threatening to turn Zaporhizhzha nuclear plant into second Chornobyl, the wound caused by this tragedy is cut open again.

We all love the HBO Chornobyl series, and I genuinely am grateful to Craig Mazin for the amount of empathy and respect he brought to the series; but for today I indulge you to watch something made by ukrainians, to try to understand what this tragedy means to us and how it influences our lives even today.

For the documentaries, my favourite series by this day remains the "Dragons live here" by Your Underground Humanitarian School Youtube channel, which, unfortunately, can only offer automated english subtitles - they should, however, be sufficient.

Quit fixating on Putin's nukes FFS.

Donald Trump and his MAGA minions are trying to imply that aid for Ukraine will lead to nuclear war. This is bullshit which is meant to bolster Putin's illegal war of aggression against a peaceful neighbor.

We hear MAGA Russophiles repeat this whenever new aid or new weapons systems are sent to Ukraine. The last time I checked, Putin hasn't nuked San Diego or Memphis. And we have crossed more of Putin's "red lines" than Trump has red neckties.

Even a delusional imperialist like Vladimir Putin understands that the ultimate outcome of any nuclear war would leave him as a shirtless congealed blob of radioactive fat. ⚛

With nuclear option unlikely, Putin struggles to defend his red lines

“There has been an overflow of nuclear threats,” said a Russian official speaking on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the subject. “There is already immunity to such statements, and they don’t frighten anyone.” A Russian academic with close ties to senior Russian diplomats agreed, calling the nuclear option “the least possible” of scenarios, “because it really would lead to dissatisfaction among Russia’s partners in the Global South and also because clearly, from a military point of view, it is not very effective.”

The United States and its NATO allies have no intention of giving nukes to Ukraine.

What we don't hear from scare-mongering MAGA zombies or Putin-friendly tankies is that the war in Ukraine would end immediately if the Russian invaders simply left Ukraine. Anybody who truly wants peace should be telling Russia to get the fuck back to their own country.

This week, Trump and former independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. wrote in an op-ed for the Hill that a decision to grant Ukraine permission to use Western long-range missiles “would put the world at greater risk of nuclear conflagration than at any time since the Cuban missile crisis” and called for direct negotiations with Moscow instead.

The only thing to "negotiate" with Moscow is a short ceasefire while Russia withdraws all its invading troops. The bottom line is that Russia has no business in Ukraine. The invasion is in violation of numerous international laws, treaties, and memoranda.

As for technology, Russia's means of using ICBMs in nuclear war just ain't what it used to be.

Russia is a third-rate power which happens to have nukes and a lot of empty territory that looks deceptively impressive on a map. Its ability to handle any atomic technology competently is questionable. Even during the glory days of the Soviet Union it gave the world its worst nuclear disaster at Chernobyl in 1986.

Chernobyl is in northern Ukraine which became independent in 1991. Ukrainians had done a good job of cleaning up much of the radioactive mess left by Moscow.

But Russia then temporarily occupied the area around Chernobyl in the early part of the invasion. Russian occupiers there did incredibly stupid things like dig military trenches in radioactive soil and loot radioactive materials to take home as souvenirs.

Russia has few serious competitors for the Darwin Awards this year. 🎖  ⚛️

What we should worry more about is another nuclear accident inside Russia caused by recklessness or incompetence. The sooner Ukraine is victorious, the more likely Russia will be able to tend to its own problems at home.

37 років тому, 26 квітня 1986 року, двома тепловими вибухами на четвертому енергоблоці Чорнобильської атомної електростанції, розташованої на території Української Радянської Соціалістичної Республіки, було повністю зруйнувано реактор і стався викид в довкілля великої кількості радіоактивних речовин. Розпочалася одна із найбільших техногенних екологічно-гуманітарних катастроф в історії…

В ніч на 26 квітня стались 2 вибухи, а наступного дня світ би дізнався, що таке Чорнобиль. Але тогочасна влада змовчувала події, що відбулись і наступні дні за якими паради 1 травня, коли всі виходили на демонстрації, приймали на себе величезну дозу опромінення не знаючи про небезпеку.

Про це я знаю від своїх рідних.

Про Чорнобильську трагедію будучи малою знала тільки по лінійках у школі. Але свідомості тоді це не приносило. Я до кінця не розуміла глобальності тих подій. І як це вплинуло на нас.

Сьогодні я хочу ще раз переглянути серіал HBO. Це страшно, але від цього вже нікуди не дінешся. Зона відчудження, екологічна катастрофа та хвороби, які проявились з часом внаслідок опромінення значними дозами радіації, навіть у моїх рідних.

І на кінець це трохи дико звучить, але це принесло стільки біди українським сім'ям та всьому світу, але також трохи потішило в часи війни. Думаю ті орки, які обкопувались на закинутій території тепер теж знають, як впливає радіація на організм. Якщо ще дихають. 🧨☢️

Сьогодні минає 37 років з дня трагедії на Чорнобильській АЕС. В українській мові слово «чорнобиль» (полин) означає гірку траву, яка має ще й іншу назву «полин». Чорнобильська катастрофа передбачена в Біблії, Одкровення 8:10,11  «Третій ангел засурмив, і впала з неба велика зоря, палаючи, як смолоскип, і впала на третину річок та на водні джерела. Ім’я зірки — Полин. Третина вод. стала полином, і багато померло від води, бо вона стала гіркою».
