"i know what you’re going to say.” benjamin said as he walked the halls of his aunt and uncle’s house, the one that had (up until recently) held so many good memories of him and maddie. but this time his visit wasn’t for the entire summer like it might have been before, it wasn’t going to be filled with playing in the yard. he’d come up from college knowing that maddie was out of rehab, and he wasn’t going to be heading back in the coming hours like he might have done before. “ben, go back to college, i’m fine.” he mimicked her voice with a grin, even if it was an awful impression. “but i’m going to hang out here for a few days. i’ve not seen you for a while, and i’m glad you’re back home. so i’m gonna stay a couple of nights, alright?”

benjamin winced slightly as maddie seemed to dab at the wound on his face. how he’d managed to slip down the ice steps of his apartment building he still wasn’t sure - one minute he had been at the top and upright, the next he was a crumpled heap at the bottom with the metallic taste of blood in his mouth. “you know i could have done this myself.” he explained, eyes glancing up towards her. “you’re just taking advantage of the fact it’s not me looking out for you for once. but you were just lucky those steps were icy on a morning you were stopping by.” he laughed slightly, though that action in itself caused another wince. “trust me, i’m fine.”
