today’s crossword puzzle in the edelweiss gazette was an animal themed one which made ultear quite happy. sadly, none of the answers were cow but she liked other animals enough. sirius was laying at her feet on the couch where she was sitting up, her tea definitely cold now as her focus was away from it. vaguely, she could feel jellal shifting around but he wasn’t doing much to get her attention.

at least, she thought so until she felt the soft, warm lips of jellal pressed on her cheek. the gentle action itself caused her stomach to flip as her face formed a soft, truly happy smile.

“you are being very sweet this morning, i see.” ultear informed him. as he moved away, she reached to peck him on the lips quickly and leaned back once more. “i like it.”

an innocent “hm?” only just escaped her lips as jellal spoke. ultear was focused on her hand, holding Jellal’s wrist and pulling him towards the card game some others were setting up. she could see the pure white of lyon’s head, decorated with a reindeer headband and someone (possible gray) put a “kick me” paper on his back. ha! it was only when she turned to look at him, stopped as he was, that his words truly sunk in.

and sink did those words do — burying themselves deep into her heart which fought against the prison she put there. the prison was needed, it was a self protection measure and yet. and yet, her eyes flickered from jellal’s to the keystone of the archway and hanging there where, sure enough, was a mistletoe. ultear felt her mouth open slightly and she looked back at jellal. she couldn’t…maybe it was the third hot chocolate that did it. no, that wasn’t it. she just. she couldn’t understand what his look meant. she felt electrified, suddenly. what did it mean? why was he looking at her like that? what did that look mean? and also — jellal helped decorate, didn’t he? why was this up?

“who did you want to see kiss, jellal?” the question left her and she was happy it was … a non revealing one. she was still holding his wrist. she wanted to let go, lest he feel her pulse on accident. but she didn’t. “i know you helped decorate.” she smiled then, a bit cheeky and maybe a bit flirty. “how uncouth of you.” she would not ignore tradition, though. so, with a little push from her toes (she was tall, but jelall was a bit taller) she kissed him lightly and not on the mouth but not on his cheek either. just…just next to his mouth. enough to follow through tradition and not reveal herself while also being just a tad flirty. she liked to be flirty when she was happy and at this moment, she was happy.

a quiet laugh escaped her lips and ultear shook her head with fondness. jellal looked so soft in his blanket and the weight of his head on her lap was … pleasant. warm. the time mage smiled down at him as her hand came up to continue the work she briefly abandoned to ask him if he wanted to get up. he took her words to mean wake up, when she merely meant to go to his room. but it was fine. she didn’t mind that they ended up like this. and he didn’t seem to mind her work of petting his hair, scratching softly at his head. she hoped he enjoyed it, she certainly loved her hair being played with.

“didn’t realize you were part bear, jellal, my bad.” ultear joked. it was mostly to herself, really. he was determined to go back to sleep and utlear was not going to stop him. not really. he was adorable like this, even if she didn’t say it out loud (or dare to think it in the proximity of erik).it was … nice and it was peaceful. perfect for winter.

laughed easily bubbled out of her and ultear shook her head. "that was so terrible, jellal!" but! it was in the season and it was quintessential jellal. so, she adored it.

" I believe a message from a certain little birdy The little birdy was himself has reached my ears. It's about to be your birthday soon. " A slight mischievous smirk formed on his lips followed by a light tap on his chin. " Something about bubbles too I think? Hm. I forget. "

at the sound of his approach, ultear had quickly finished the sentence of her book and by the time the sound of his voice reaches her, her bookmark was placed and the book was closing as the word 'birthday' was said. a smile came to her, unbidden, splitting her face into two before she let out a soft laugh. the truth was, she had forgotten her birthday was approaching. well. sorta.

"is your little birdie aware that my birthday is technically the 29th and i've another year before it comes to that?" ultear cheekily asked. she wasn't normally one to get excited for her own birthday. in fact, she didn't celebrate it often at all, despite how rare it was to occur. but. well. jellal's excitement was mischievous and it both excited and intrigued her. "and what a mysterious birdy, indeed. i guess we'll have to wait the two days, hm?"
