And What If I Told You. There's No 'W' Sound In 'Wooyoung'
#shrimp thoughts#there just isn't! no 'w'!#it's not 'woo' like the romantic verb!#ever since i took that one month long korean course in 2018 looking at what kpop does to korean romanization has been so painful#like. hobi has ㅓ in his family name and it gets romanized as u but another ㅓ in his given name is eo. ????????#i also don't like ㅜ = oo because like... it makes things longer? please embrace ㅜ as u. YKNOW. THE WAY YOU DO WITH URI.#i have Never seen 우리 romanized as '(w)ooli' so WHAT'S UP WITH THAT.#and don't get me started on ㅗ. when they romanized jin/soul's name they kinda had the right idea in that it's a more rounded sorta 'o'#compared to ㅓ (during korean classes we called them low o and side o lol) BUT THEN. wy has the 'ou' in his name BUT IT'S ㅓ.#this is all to say your little guy's named uyeong. sorry#i feel like basing the romanization of korean on english is sorta stupid because they're different languages but ALSO because phonetically#english is in NO way consistent. so ㅓis 'u“ (jung) but also it's ”ou“ (wooyoung) and “eo” (hoseok). girl whatcha doing#when it's like. ʌ in ipa. sun + son + young. but it's ONE (1) SOUND. HELL ON EARTH.#post is sponsored by a youtuber saying wy's name with an audible W sound and me being like This Is An Easily Fixable Issue! but also#i do Not believe i can physically point that out to anyone without sounding like a total asshole (see: this post) so#(of course it's all nice and proper in like actual korean romanization systems like the revised one BUT kpop notably does NOT use the#revised romanization... sunmi actually had to explain that her name's not pronounced soon-me. which could have been avoided#if they just spelled it seonmi lol

Shroom Study Time: Informal Polite Present Tense (KGIU)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Today I reviewed the informal polite present tense using the "Korean Grammar In Use" textbook. Since this grammar point is not difficult for me, I just did a few grammar drills but mostly focused on practicing speaking. I did end up making this little worksheet thing because I find them fun to fill out (and to make). So if y'all want to use it, feel free to (it's at the bottom of the post).
_
Informal Polite Present Tense
To conjugate verbs and adjectives into the present tense add ~아/어요. If the v./adj. ends in a vowel, it merges. It doesn't merge if the v./adj. ends in a consonant.
If the v./adj. ends in ㅏ/ㅗ, add ~아요
가다 + ~아요 = 가요 놀다 + ~아요 = 놀아요
If the v./adj. does not end in ㅏ/ㅗ, add ~어요
먹다 + ~어요 = 먹어요
~어요 merges with certain vowels differently
ㅐ/ㅓ/ㅕ + ~어요 = 애요 / 어요 / 여요 ㅜ + ~어요 = 워요 ㅣ + ~어요 = 여
If the v./adj. ends in 하다, it becomes 해요
공부하다 + ~어요 = 공부해요 지루하다 + ~어요 = 지루해요
이다 becomes 이에요/예요
사과이다 -> 사과예요 핸드폰이다 -> 핸드폰이에요
_
As always if you have any questions, comments, concerns, or corrections, feel free to send 'em my way. Happy studying y'all!

I really need to draw my disassembly drone ocs yall would love them
Their names are ㅁ (Mieum), ㄹ (Rieul), ㅆ (SsangSiot) and ㅗ (O), I like to call them the Girl Gang bc why not
I literally only came up with them bc I was pondering the idea of dds with names from other alphabets :3 (im a total language nerd)
It would be pretty cool to see some dd ocs from other alphabets like Greek, Cyrillic, Arabic, etc.
Feel free to comment with yours I WANT TO SEE THEM!!!!!!! >:3

everytime i try and learn hangul i'm always struck by how obviosuly perfect the keyboard is laid out. the first time i got mad that the sounds weren't in the same places as the qwerty equivalent, for example ㄱ which is a sort of k/g sound, was on the key 'r'; until i realised all the consonants were on the left side of the keyboard and all the vowels were on the right. which is perfect, because every single syllable is either a cononant-vowel-consonant, or just a consonant-vowel.
and now i'm back on it again and trying to find the vowels like ㅕ, ㅛ and ㅑ on my keyboard and whaddya know. they're all directly above their counterparts (like ㅓ, ㅗ and ㅏ). like this keyboard is just. it's so well thought out. idk why the english keyboard uses qwerty so i can't speak on that, but (at least on laptop where u obviously can't change the keyboards layout) japanese also uses qwerty format. like if i wanted to write か which is just "ka" then i press k and then a it's very simple. yk what i wonder if japanese had fewer characters if it would just go by keys instead of key combinations. i can sense myself making less and less sense now. i just think the english to korean keyboard is laid out particularly well and it makes me happy.

Semiformal forms 🤗 We transformed verbs and adjectives into semiformal forms in the present tense adding 아요 or 어요 to the radical. We add 아요 if the radical ends in vowel ㅗ ou ㅏ. Otherwise, we add 어요. 찾다 (to find) – radical ends in vowel ㅏ = 찾아요
좋다 (to be good) – radical ends in vowel ㅗ = 좋아요
먹다 (to eat) – radical ends in vowel ㅓ = 먹어요
있다 (to have) – radical ends in vowel ㅣ = 있어요 How to add 아요 Fisrt, let’s see how to add 아요 to radicals with final consonant. (Later we’ll learn how to add 아요 to radicals without final consonant.) If the radical ends in vowel ㅗ or ㅏ with final consonant, we add 아요 to the radical. ㅗ ou ㅏ + final consonant radical + 아요
좋다 (to be good) = 좋아요
닦다 (to wash) = 닦아요
볶다 (to fry) = 볶아요
닫다 (to close) = 닫아요
높다 (tall) = 높아요
살다 (to live) = 살아요
