What's In an Obi? Part 7

On The Fifth Day of Fun I present... a new obi! I try to find ones that are unique, and hopefully this one fit the bill ^^

Owned by: Man (まん) in Gion Higashi Motifs: Musical Instruments Yes, I'm featuring a Man obi again, but they have such a lovely closet full of treasures and Gion Higashi doesn't get as much love as the other districts. Plus, this obi slaps, so let's take a look. The most stand out part of this obi is its three main repeating motifs: a yellow trumpet, a cyan lute, and a magenta (well, light pink) set of drums. It's a cute way to express the three primary colors and draws the eyes immediately to the obi as the centerpiece of the outfit. In the background are music notes, treble clefs, and waves that swirl around the instruments. It makes it seem as though the music is jumping right off the silk and into our ears! As you may have noticed, the instruments are all Western and not Japanese in origin, making this obi even more unique!

Fulfilled a lifelong dream of being professionally dressed in formal kimono in Japan for an event!

I learned loads of kitsuke tips - definitely worth paying money for them to sew on the haneri and preparing the kasane’eri to see how the professionals do it!

Also very happy with how the coordinate turned out - everything came together really well! Worth the months of finding different pieces to go together - but actually quite a few of the main pieces (obi, obiage, kasane eri) were from my existing collection.

Now I'm sawing an obi kept while a year after an city art exhibition. I'm going to make half width obi because I usually enjoy kimono in a casual ways...

やっぱこれお太鼓かわいいやん？と思ってしまい、決められず仕立てられず…を半幅と決めて仕立て始め、ギリギリでまだ迷う（呆）

いえこのまま半幅にします。来週締めたいと思います。

But I'm still deciding which width I should make (full size or half width) because I think it may quite nice to make common knot called otaiko...No, I choose half width! I'm going to use this at the next weekend.

Obi remake 2 / 尾美 其の二

破れたアウトドアチェアの修繕依頼を受けて、また帯を縫い付けてみました

帯は生地が硬く、派手派手しいので服や鞄にリメイクは向きませんが、アウトドアにはもってこいです。生地はしっかりして主張があっていいですね。

脇は黒い生地を持ってきましたが、物足りないので紐を縫い付けて装飾しました。

既存の製品というのは機械生産で作りやすさ重視なので、修理やリメイクがしにくいのが難点で、フレームはバラバラにならないので、最後は手縫いでつけました。でもそれがかえって良い味を出してます。

I got offer to repair this ripped outdoor chair.

Obi is thick and outstanding that is why it is not good for remaking it as clothing and goods. But it is better for the outdoor stuffs. Because it is tough and unique.

Both side I put plain black cloth but something is missing, so I sew and put thick strings as decoration.

Industrial products made by machine and mechanic process that is why it is difficult to remake and repair by human being. This frame could’t re structure then I sewed remade fabric on chair by hand that actually makes it better looking.

Spotlight: The Obi of Sakkō

On The Twelfth Day of Fun I present... another spotlight! Someone actually did an ask about iconic obi, and to me there's no obi more iconic than those worn during the sakkō period. While the sakkō outfits of each kagai may differ, there's one constant that remains the same: stunning obi with golden threads to celebrate the special occasion. Most tend to have white as a base, but others will incorporate other colors like beige, gold, taupe, or some shade close to gold. In other rare occasions you'll even see bold colors such as green or black; there's no strict rules when it comes to sakkō! Gold is the color of wealth and celebrations, so its abundance is auspicious and a wish for much luck in the future. The motifs on the obi tend to be auspicious as well, with karabana (imaginary flowers) being quite popular as they're both beautiful and unique as no two designs are identical. In some cases certain okiya will use the same outfits specifically for their sakkō periods, so we'll see certain obi used just for this period. Sometimes okiya will even use specific obi for specific naming lines if they have more than one under their roof. Other times okiya will choose their finest obi and pair it with their sakkō kimono. The combinations are almost endless and the traditions are unique from one okiya to the next, even within the same district! KimoNovember Day 1: After years of not taking part, I figured I should put some effort into coordinating my closet, especially with all the new items in it that I recently acquired from a friend.

Today’s is an easy coord because I had forgotten to prepare in advance 😬 Both the kimono and obi are from my friend, accessories from my existing closet. The colour scheme is a nod to the old Immortal Geisha forums! This coord is 100% summer, which makes it very wearable in the tropics.
