Serving any kind of sweet dessert is encouraged during Chinese New Year because it symbolises bringing a sweet life into the new year. The Hokkiens also consider certain fruits auspicious, and they are particularly fond of pineapple, ong lai in the Hokkien dialect, which literally means “fortune come”. Hence, the pineapple is often incorporated into Chinese New Year snacks and decorations. A popular snack is the Pineapple Tart (黄梨挞), which comprises pineapple jam topped or enclosed within a buttery biscuit base and is often given as a gift during Chinese New Year. Here, it is in the shape of plum blossom which is in season now. The flora design with pink centre is Butter Cookie (曲奇饼) which feature a melt in the mouth texture.

Liu Yuning performed with Da Zhangwei in the 2024 CCTV New Year's Gala 🐉🧧
The performance is like 4 hours in, so it's gonna take me a while to get to it, but I found these lovely screenshots in the meantime ❤️

Google New Year Animations:
When you go on Google and type “[insert Asian country that celebrates Lunar New Year] New Year”, you will be greeted with a firework and a rabbit/cat animation (depending on the country). A rabbit for China and other countries that use the same animal zodiac and a cat for Vietnam since 2023 is the Year of the Cat there. It’s the little things…

Screenshots of animations that show up when you search “Chinese New Year” and “Korean New Year” respectively on Google. Since both countries share the same zodiac, it’s the year of the rabbit for both.

Screenshot of animation that shows up when you search “Vietnamese New Year” on Google. The Vietnamese zodiac replaces the rabbit for the cat as the fourth zodiac animal.

春节

Whether you called this Hae Bee Hiam Roll (虾米卷) or mini prawn roll, they are equally addictive to snack on. They are filled with minced hae bee (dried shrimps) cooked with a variety of spices and individually hand rolled before deep-frying in oil. The mini rolls are super crispy with a spicy umami dried shrimps filling. They are available all year round in Singapore but just seems to taste that much better during Chinese New Year. :D Shown on the right is Vegan Prawn Rolls so everyone can still share the joy of snacking on it.
