Why I think JK used 친구 (Chingu/Friend) for Tae...

Ok, so there I was having finished enjoying Festa 2021 ‘Army Shop for Everything’ and I go on Twitter to find lots of Taekookers and Non-Taekookers lamenting JK's use of 친구 (Chingu/Friend) for Tae.

For the Taekookers they were like "What? Friend? We don't believe you JK?" and Non-Taekookers were like "HAHA! See! They're just friends, JK just confirmed it HAHAHA!"

Okay before I look at 친구 (Chingu/Friend) itself and my thoughts, let's take a quick look at what all the other the members said about each other:

RM - Takeaways are they all apart from J Hope and Jimin (who see him more as a friend) consider him as leader

JIMIN He's like my brother

Jin - Most see him as a brother in various forms and JK takes the mickey by highlighting his age (an ongoing saga for JK & Jin lol)

OK some summarising takeways

Apart from Tae, whom he sees as a same-age friend, Jimin sees everyone else as his brother.

Jimin and Tae use 친구 (Chingu/Friend) in its everyday traditional form, to describe someone you know who is the same age group (it should be noted that this does not have to mean they are friends it's just an honorific like Hyeong)

RM & Jimin use 친구 (Chingu/Friend) in a gramatically correct way to describe one who might be older or younger as a friend by adding contextual words with 친구 e.g. 친구같은 요 = 'like a friend' or 좋은친구 = good friend.

Before continuing, some clarification on 친구 It's meaning and usage:

It is most commonly used to describe or talk about/to a person who is the same age and themselves. Note that person does not have to be their friend in the western sense of the word, just the same age. In this context, it's similar to 형 (hyeong/older brother) and 동생 (dongsaeng/little brother). It's kind of a form of honorific.

It can also be used more informally to talk about a same-age friend you are really close too like Jimin/Tae are. This is very similar to the western idea of a friend.

It can be used to describe a peer to whom you are close to. This how most of the other members use the word when talking about each other, though this is only occasionally, and will uses a additional contextual language to support this.

There's another way of using it by adding 남자 (namja/boy) or 여자 (yeoja/girl) it can be used when referring to your boyfriend/girlfriend.

JK's use of 친구

JK's use of 친구 (Chingu/Friend) is the odd one out here and is technically an incorrect usage of the term/word because Tae is not a same-age friend and JK hasn't used any other contextual words to add clarification. Here he only uses that one word, just like Tae did with Jimin.

Until this point, we've always seen/heard JK only refer to Tae as 형 (Hyeong/brother). So why use just 친구 (Chingu/Friend) now?

A conservative Korea...

In this academic paper, it discusses how gay Korean men navigate a conservative society in relation to their sexuality. Two extracts highlight why I think JK maybe using 친구 (Chingu/Friend)...

Extract 1

“Before we travelled, we sat down and talked about how we would be introduced and who would we be introduced to. It was decided that we would just be introduced as Chingu (friends)... When I came out there was an understanding that I would not be coming-out to anyone in my extended family. Over the years, my mom’s side all know now, but my dad’s side, still nobody knows.”

Extract 2

“On my mom's side, he still got introduced with the words chingu (friend) but I think everyone knew what that meant. I don't think anyone was comfortable saying like namja chingu (boyfriend). Coz I think that is maybe too much. But everyone seemed fine meeting him. […] It was amazing when the two of us actually stayed at my grandmas. My mom's mom's place for a couple of nights. My grandma doesn’t speak a ton of English. She spoke what little she knew to him and then she told me: ‘you look very 환해 (“shiny”) and I've never seen you this bright and happy.’ Yeah and I think that went really amazingly well. The rest of my mom's extended family, I think everybody's OK. It was like meeting any other friends. There was nothing special about it. Nothing particularly different than meeting another friend but I think everyone knew and didn’t act weird about it which I think is amazing."

This is very reminiscent of 60s/70s/80s gay western culture where many men and women would refer to their partners as friends for the sake of their conservative families/society.

So we know that a closeted gay Korean celebrity would not be able to say the word 남자친구 (namja chingu/boyfriend) but perhaps could say the word 친구 (Chingu/Friend) instead when referring to someone considered their partner (Las Vegas BBQ 2019), even though it's an incorrect usage of the word.

So yeah maybe JK is using it in this context because of Korean society. Otherwise he'd used similar language to language to Jimin or RM and say 친구같은 요 (Like a friend), 좋은친구 (Good friend) or 내 친구 (my friend).

To simply say 친구/Chingu throws a level of doubt/suspicion on the context of the word because it's technically being incorrectly used.

So JK what do you mean when you say 친구?...
