erin couldn’t help but chuckle, trust eloise to come out with such a statement. the fact that she was so headstrong was part of the appeal of spending time with her. why they were friends, despite their polar opposite upbringings. “perhaps you’re right. although I’m not sure how i’d feel about other people saying bad things about me. what if they got back to our guardians? what if they were untrue, that’s even worse!?”

it was no secret that erin stuck out like a sore thumb. everyone knew that she wasn’t the true daughter of hank and camille, that she’d really been thrust upon them, taken pity on, and raised in the voight family. but as with far too many things, the details were kept behind closed doors, and instead erin just had to deal with the looks, the sympathetic glances, the judgemental expressions, that came with being in attendance at such an event. “do you think we’d be missed if we went out to get some air?”

she stuck out like a sore thumb, or so that was how erin felt. her fingers toyed carefully with the tops of her gloves, pulled so far up her arms that any chance of them slipping down was minimal, despite the amount she fiddled with the seam of the fabric. this was her first time in attendance to such an event, with her new family, or so that was what the story was, and standing to one side helped to minimise the risk that she might do something to taint the reputation of the couple who had taken her in. her mind was on nothing but ‘do not embarrass hank and camille’, so much so that her eyes were still on them as she walked, not paying attention to the fact that she was on a collision course with another guest. “oh –– i’m so sorry ––”

an outsider already, eloise’s words made her feel that little bit more unwanted, out of place, like she ought to go back to the side of town and life she’d come from before. and yet, there was a part of her that was compelled to stay, even just to make sure that she was a fine as she seemed to want her to believe. “sometimes being alone isn’t the right thing to do.” erin knew that as good as anyone. “sometimes, it’s about the people who stay, not the people who let you stray.”

i will be honest, i haven’t thought about this in loads of detail but with the bridgerton resurgence and everyone else adding period verses i wanted to jump on the bandwagon and sketch out a rough outline for where erin might sit in those verses.

in short, erin was born to a less than wealthy family to a woman out of wedlock, bunny fletcher. bunny was something of an outcast in the community, and usually this would mean that erin would follow in the same footsteps, and therefore struggle to climb out of that cycle. however, following an incident that isn’t spoken about, and that erin does not have the details of, she was handed over to hank and camille and raised as their own daughter. their status meant that erin had better options, access to the balls and parties we see in bridgerton, and generally a far better life. she’s still very much a headstrong woman which at times may make her seem undesirable, but she’s just a woman who stands up for what she believes in.
