British and US helicopters operate together in the Swift Response 2022 Exercise

British and American helicopters have demonstrated their abilities by working together in the Swift Response Exercise. Aviation Task Force 1 of the Joint Helicopter Command (ATF-1), which commands the attack, reconnaissance and support helicopters in the British Army's global response force, is flying in support of the main multinational exercise in North Macedonia.

The British Army issued a press release:

“The Apache attack helicopters of the 4 Regiment Army Air Corps (AAC), 1st Aviation Brigade Combat Team and the Chinook support helicopters of the 18 Squadron of the RAF are working alongside the Chinook and Blackhawk support helicopters of the 1st Air Cavalry Brigade of the U.S. Army, known as the Wolfes Task Force In the exercise, mountains more than 2,000 m high and dusty soil create challenging flight conditions, while the ground team is working on the field at Advanced Weapons and Refueling Points (FARP), the military equivalent of a Formula 1 pit stop.

British and French paratroopers have demonstrated the firepower they can use during the demanding shooting training in the hills of North Macedonia.

A key activity was the shooting exercise with combined weapons. Protected by the Apaches, Chinooks and Blackhawks landed soldiers from the 2nd Battalion of the Paratrooper Regiment, with the Apaches providing fire support from their 30 mm cannons and Chinooks from their 7.62 mm miniguns and machine guns. ”

ATF-1 commander, Lieutenant Colonel Alex Harris, said:

“What we are delivering in Swift Response is incredibly challenging. We deploy helicopters and everything we need to operate them thousands of kilometers across Europe to establish an austere location, quickly build a relationship with another unit with different procedures and equipment, and now we are planning and carrying out complex airstrikes on missions together. Being able to do this is proof of the quality of our soldiers - their skills, physical and mental robustness - and they are taking the chance to go out and do their job."

American Warrant Officer Daniel Thompson, HH-60 Blackhawk pilot said:

"I've been flying with British doctors and our role is to evacuate the victims, both in the exercise scenario and if there is any real situation. Together with the British, we have attack helicopters, heavy cargo and medical evacuation that form a very powerful team, where each of us has brought different experiences. I first served with the British in Afghanistan in 2003 and we worked very well together. This training aims to further build trust between us, so that we can be ready to respond to any global contingencies."

The Swift Response Exercise is carried out with more than 3,000 soldiers from eight NATO countries in North Macedonia under the command of 16 Air Assault Brigade Combat Team, with about 2,000 British soldiers and aviators participating.

georgie had begrudgingly agreed to this; her older brother, liam, had practically begged her - “he needs a familiar face, georgia,” “he needs a place to crash, georgie,” and finally “you know i would do it for you, g.” despite the age difference between them, she knew it was true; liam would do anything and everything for her, and if the least she could do was pick up his old best friend from prison and let him crash for a few days - well, she had a spare room collecting dust, and her new years resolution had been to be nicer to others around her. 

she didn’t know what to expect - he’d been in prison since she was a teenager, and she had barely even known him then. a familiar face around her home when she was growing up, he’d gotten lost somewhere along the way - that’s what liam claimed, at least, though she was sure the reason liam got away scot free had more to do with their status in the world than anything else. ( she was pretty sure liam owed a lot more than a ride and a bed for a night to him, especially from his younger sister. ) 

he walked out with a box of belongings, georgie’s tongue darting across her lip - sue her, she had eyes and he had been her first crush when she was young - but his gaze was even more indecipherable than her own. 

“don’t look at me like that,” she demanded, standing up straight and tall, jingling her keys in her hand, “liam’s still in california and said you needed a ride and a place to crash. so i’m your savior. ready to go?”

the proposal wasn’t exactly a surprise. 

it had been set up years and years before, really - arranged marriages between packs were more commonplace than she would have liked, and as the natural heir to her own pack, it made sense that she’d be destined for the heir of another. dean was...fine, really. she could stand to live her life with him. they would join together two packs in neighboring areas, creating a stronger bond against anyone that tried to go against them. 

they had spent their entire lives knowing that this was what was expected of them. even as they dated others as teens and young adults, this was always where they were going to end up. 

what was surprising were the specifics; him getting down on one knee with her grandmothers ring, in the middle of a fourth of july barbecue with both packs in attendance. what was surprising was that even as she said ‘yes’, even as the group around them cheered, her eyes fell on him instead - 

floyd. 

the wildcard she’d never expected. the one her heart truly wanted. and while they’d never discussed it before - it made no sense to dabble in ‘what ifs’ and ‘maybes’ when they both knew it would never happen - she could see his face fall, even slightly, even as he clapped and celebrated with the rest. 

it made her heart ache. 

it took awhile for her to finally make her way over to him, a little off to the side while their friends and families were mingling about, talking excitedly about what this meant for everyone. she held out a drink, a small smile on her lips as she sat down next to him. “you didn’t come congratulate me yet,” she said quietly, knocking her knee into his. “trying to figure out a way to do it in private instead?”

open to m  plot loosely based on this ; [ your muse ] was georgie’s best friends’ older brother. after hooking up on the dl for about six months, georgie disappeared without saying anything - only to wind up on [ your muse ]’s doorstep with a toddler in tow.

guilt had crawled at her for three years; she had never been one for attachments, which had made their arrangement perfect at the time. her intentions had been just to disappear for a few days - to take care of the issue, to leave them none the wiser about what they’d done. 

but she’d gotten a job offer across the country instead. and in the process of moving and settling down, she became attached. it was easier, almost - she wasn’t alone. and while being a mother had never been in the cards for her before, georgie found herself willing to move heaven and hell to make her child happy. 

but libby was going to turn two in a few weeks, and it didn’t seem fair that she didn’t know her father. or that her father didn’t even know she existed. which was why she’d gotten on an airplane, flying back to her former home, holding their daughter in her arms when he opened the door. 

"surprise,” she greeted, a smile on her lips that didn’t quite seem as genuine as she wanted it to. she was terrified - he could slam the door in their faces, not believe her if she told him libby was his daughter, walk away - but she put on a brave face regardless. “sorry, that was - glib. hi. can we come in?”

her flight was in eight hours ; she never stayed longer in a city than she had to, desperate to get home to new york and be showered in adoration for whatever contract she’d managed to negotiate while she was out of town and, more importantly, back in her own bed for a few nights before she was off across the world again. she had rules - at 8am, she’d unceremoniously kick out whatever partner she had, giving her enough time to shower, eat and pack before her 12pm flight that would send her back. 

it had been a plan that had worked for her for three years now. she’d never worried about attachments, or longing, or - even worse - wondering if she should delay her return and take advantage of whatever hub she was in at the moment. 

the clock read 7:58, but she’d made no moves to start them on their process out the door. in fact, she was sitting up with her phone in hand, reading through their tindr profile once again - as if she could somehow pick out what details had brought them together to understand why it was she didn’t feel like letting go just yet. 

their words were muffled; georgie hadn’t even realized they were awake, but the request was tempting in and of itself - a day in bed, extending her stay for a few hours, room service and maybe another round or two of sex before she disappeared into the chicago o’hare airport. 

“my flights in four hours,” was her response instead. “you need to get going so i can get ready to leave.” 

it was always better to be safe than sorry, she figured.

( she missed him, and she wanted to be with him, but neither of them were ready to admit that they were still in love. it was easier this way. )
