what made you pick up the current muse(s) you have?━━ fandom brainrot lmao In all seriousness, though, I do tend to build my muses toward whatever genres or fandoms I'm currently most engaged with. is there anything you don’t like to write? ━━ Not generally in a way that has come up? I don't like children/pregnancy plots, just because they're not of interest to me, and I'm not generally into period drama type writing? And crack, I suppose.

is there anything you really enjoy writing? ━━ I'm an old fashioned whump/angst bitch. I like giving characters a good thrashing, be it emotionally or physically, and sticking them with other people, and seeing what comes out the other side. (Shaking the snowglobe, as it were.) I also really like working within established/plotted dynamics! Not necessarily that the whole trajectory is plotted out or anything, but developing a solid basis in which to work. I enjoy when characters settle into something, and then presenting circumstances that can reinforce or change those dynamics.

AND SPOOKY SHIT. God, I love me some serious, thriller/horror type spooky shit, even if it's not quite in line with the original media.

BUT ALSO I do just really enjoy writing with my friends.

how do you come up with headcanons? ━━ Uhhhh I mean. I almost never write canon characters (too intimidated by the prospect of fucking it up), so anything "headcanon" is actually just canon, technically? In any case, I tend to sit with the character and start prodding at a concept I want to know more about. I'll try to visualize it and set the character down in related situations to gauge reaction and then build from there, if that makes sense?

do you write in silence or do you play music? ━━ It depends. I do have curated playlists for some characters, and generally have a genre or fandom playlist that I can put on. Sometimes I struggle to focus on writing if I have other stimuli, but other times I need something else to split my focus so I can actually get work done

do you plan your replies or wing them? ━━ RP to me is improv. Very little planning, a lot of feeling it out as you go, informed by whatever you've got in your noggin about the character you're writing as.

do you enjoy shipping? ━━ It's not what I write for, but I do enjoy shipping on occasion! I think... iirc out of all my ships, I'm rarely the one to suggest it first, but I'm not avoiding it. It's another one of those vibes-based things where I sort of just need to feel it out as I go, and approve or pivot as I feel is honest and appropriate to the character involved. Very chemistry-based.

mingyu approached you after school saying "do you wanna hang out at your place or something?" you nodded and walked with him saying your goodbyes to the others. about an hour after, your doorbell rang, you opened the door and saw seungcheol standing there. your eyes widened and mouthed "give me a moment" you quickly closed the door, and whisper-screamed "WHY IS HE HERE, MY OUTFIT IS NOT NICE TOO" which you were referring to your really short shorts and a big hoodie over. "i invited him, since he was bored" mingyu casuallysaid. you wanted to kill him. "KIM MINGYU HOW DARE YOU" still whisper-screaming. "uhh you gonna leave me out here?" you head seungcheol say. you quickly open the door and panic-smiled as he walked in and plopped his bag on the floor. mingyu was clearly setting you two up and you did not like it one single bit. you awkwardly sat next to mingyu, having him on your right and seungcheol on your right. after a while, you got comfortable again as you were focused on the show, mini conversations were made in between. therefore, you went back to cuddling mingyu on the couch as a usual thing. seungcheol saw and a pit of jealousy formed trying to hint to mingyu. mingyu finally got the hint and said "yo guys, i gotta go somewhere, i'll be back in an hour." he detached himself from you and left. you took your phone right away and texted him, giving him 'death threats'. you were sitting at the opposite end of the couch and seungcheol at the other. "you know you can be comfortable around me too right y/n" seungcheol comments. "yesyes i know don't worry" you reply. seungcheol opens his arms signaling to cuddle with him as your cheeks burned and you hesitantly went. you instantly melted into his touch, still blushing from the close proximity.

mingyu was over at your house due to him begging asking for help on the mathematics work. it was going all fine till mingyu brought in the topic of seungcheol. "oh my god can you not talk about him for a single day?" he kept shooting questions at you till you shooed him out of your house. a minute after he was chased out, you heard a knock on your door you sigh as you shut your eyes opening your door saying "i swear to god mingyu stop talking about seungcheol, i told you my crush for him would be gone-" you open your eyes and jump backwards as you see seungcheol standing at your door. you frantically say "forget what i said, i was just rambling rubbish," he walks into your house, closing the door on the way in and drops his bag on the way. you walk backwards as he continues following you till your back hits the wall, "can you finish that sentence for me?" he asks. you shake your head and refuse, avoiding the intense gaze from him. The Loyalty of a Traitor by DeathBelle (E) 76.9k // ok so does me liking this fic make me basic cause I feel basic LOL. I really love mafia fics, and the way the story line developed was SO good, like IN LOVE with this story. This is a fic where you should read WARNINGS, TAGS, and SUMMARY before diving in, but if the length scares you, don’t be. It’s so easy to fall in and get lost in the writing!

the courtship ritual of the hercules beetle by kittebasu (chanyeol) (T) 66.3k // again, basic? Probably LOL but it’s good so I have no shame ;) Again, pls don’t let the word count scare you (cause it scared me LOL), you get really into it after like 2 paragraphs, so just make sure you have enough time to finish hehe.

Thicker Than Blood by kylar (M) 91.4k // are you surprised that there is another mafia one? You really shouldn’t be LOL. Anyway, I’ll just be here pushing my mafia fanfic agenda while you read this monster of a fic hehe :) Definitely read WARNINGS, TAGS, and SUMMARY because there is some very sensitive topics involved! I also adore the oibokuroo friendship headcannon, so more reasons to read, right?

Liked, Commented and Subscribed by Royal Society of Pandas (Abarcelos) (T) 45.7k // this fic is SO funny omg. I read it and I had to stop so many times just to laugh because I could not stop sometimes LOL. However, there IS angst towards the end, it gets resolved, but it’s still there... But honestly, it just adds such depth and flavor to the fic, so pls read it!

BokuAka:

bang! now we're even by Authoress (M) 11.9k // so I’ll be honest, I don’t read a lot of BokuAka (...oops?) and so I wouldn’t consider myself as the best person to be recommending fics for this ship (in general too LOL).... ANyway, I love myself some good spy AUs (was gonna put that IwaOi spy AU but the LIMIT), and Akaashi in a dress? Like the tags might state, what more do you need? The characters are done beautifully, and the story development is SO good, so I give you all my humble BokuAka rec.

Crisis Converted by valiantarmor (M) 60k // man do I really love fighting in my fics LOL. This was super good and the plot itself kept me really engaged (what a twist omg). It does talk a bit about mental health issues, but it’s done so well, and they really did this AU justice!

DaiSuga:

How to Manage by SuggestiveScribe (E) 39.3k // ok so yea yea we established, I’m basic, BUT can you blame me? This might’ve been one of the first DaiSuga’s I’ve read and I have no regrets. Literally, this fic series is one of my favorites, so OF COURSE I had to add it somewhere :D Honestly, I don’t even think you need to read the first one to understand what’s going on, but I would just cause it has some funny DaiSuga moments too ;) This is explicit for PWP, so proceed with caution~~

He really out here doing the most,,, Anyway, we love tech Suga, and a nice dash of snarky tsukki (LOL is he salt, yes yes he is). It’s very fluff and pine, so if you want to read Daichi having gay panic like 24/7, go right ahead LOL. 

SakuAtsu:

Burden of Blame by DeathBelle (E) 91.2k // ummmm, haha what, another mafia AU? Me, predictable? Noooo, never..... Anyway, this one was so freakin’ good like, love it so much! It’s one of my favorite mafia AU fics, and I love the story line progression. Poor Atsumu being dragged into this mess, but it’s okay because THEY are IN LOVE. Honestly, this fic is Atsumu best boy like he is the best boy. BEST BOY.

Notte Stellata by awkwardedgeworth (T) 20.9k // I ignored all of the other fics I LOVE in this ship (like the pain I’m in rn), but I love this fic with my whole heart. Like I have reread this fic multiple multiple times because I love it so much (tho I might’ve skipped the angst a couple of times cause I didn’t want the pain okay?). I keep coming back, and the second fic in this series is SO funny and cute and I love it here. Please read it, it’s so FREAKING good, angst and ALL.

Team Mom by All_My_Characters_Are_Dead (T) 2.7k // so as I was going through this tag (because that’s what I do LOL), I remembered this fic and I love it. Like yes Yahaba is the fear factor and yes Kyoutani is the DAD. I really like the team dynamics in this one, and the first years make me laugh pls.

Camellias by kiyala (T) 1.9k // IK you’re all like, you’re missing such great fics, like no I’m not I just made myself hate myself by limiting fics to two per,,, I love this fic and when I starting looking for this ship, it was the first one I thought of hehe. I really love magic and their interactions are so cute and the PLANTS ARE DOING THE MOST. Pls read both in the series, cause domestic KyouHaba is best KyouHaba ngl LOL. I love the plants, and if you read the second one, someone tell the trees to stop bullying Yahaba.

MatsuHana:

This gets annoying fast, Makki by Ink_stained_quills (G) 2.3k // IM IN LOVE WITH THIS FIC PLS I COULD NOT STOP CRYING TEARS OF LAUGHTER. This AU needs more fics PLEASE. It was SO freakin’ funny and the other teams KILLED ME. Like how they all approached the problem differently and how some of them (KUROO) asked for help LOL. Please this is so freaking funny go read it.

boiled frogs by reginagalaxia (E) 91.5k // I told myself I was gonna put my most angsty fics on another post (which I will for my other favorite MatsuHana angst fic which I love), but this fic. Omg I saw it and I was like I have to. Literally I have to. I hate angst, but read it. It, the, plot, omg, I jjfnsfknalkjdnf ljksan. Like I’m not sure you understand. This fic. asjfjfsadnldjb. I never thought I could hate a character SO MUCH,,,, like SO MUCH. READ TAGS, WARNINGS, AND SUMMARIES because some serious stuff really goes down. Bless Iwa-chan.

Accidentally in Love by pancake_surprise (T) 19.6k // JOSE CUERVO strikes. I love this fic and all the chaos in it. The way they were supposed to be the responsible couple (of friends LOL),,, sike. This one is only a slight angst and it’s mostly love and fun :) Also technically this is no longer the first fic in the series, but I’m still putting this one cause the other one is SakuAtsu orientated hehe :)

Spring Secrets by DeathBelle (T) 3.8k // Seasons might be one of my favorite (as all things also seem to be) series of all times. I don’t like rerecommending fics I’ve already said to read, which is why I’m not yelling at you to go read a certain other fic (which is my life and blood). Hey! I'm not sure if you have posted anything about it before, but I'd be super interested to hear about your research on fanfiction!

Hi there! Thanks for your question! I’m currently working on my dissertation for my master’s in the History of the Book. My dissertation is looking at the relationship between reader, writer, and author in fanfiction, how the customs of fanfiction rearrange conventional understandings of those relationships, and how those fanfiction relationships are tied to digital infrastructure (in fanfiction’s current form).

Here is a much longer explanation:

What is my dissertation modeled around? In 1982, this guy Robert Darnton introduced a very popular model in book history called the ‘communication circuit’ (Darnton has his roots in cultural studies, which is a friend of fan studies. I love it when these things connect!). He argued that for a given time period, we can map out the relationship between author-publisher-printer-distributor-reader-back to author again. (Find an adaptation of his model from Padmini Ray Murray and Claire Squire’s article ‘The digital communications circuit’ included below). Darnton also argued that there are intellectual, economic, social and political forces that influence each of these players in the communication circuit. For example: what is the author intellectually compelled by? What is the publisher allowed to publish? Are import and export rates feasible to acquire materials for the printer? Can booksellers maintain their business in a failing economy? Are readers motivated to read certain types of texts? And how do the interests of the readers reflect back to the authors? 

It’s a very fun model, and lots of people have taken it and said, ‘Weeeeeeeeeeell, actuallyyyyyyyy, it’s slightly different in [xyz time period with xyz constraints].’ For example, Murray and Squires argue that the circuit is different in the digital publishing realm (their updated model below). Note the insertion of freelancers, for example, and the new description of ‘readers’ as consumers.

Okay, okay, that’s all fine and good. What does this matter for my research? I’m interested in how fanfiction enters this model and upends it.

Once (transformative) fans get their hands on a source text (for my purposes, books, but film and tv shows work too), they kinda exit the original circuit (OC). 

Fic writers produce their own interpretations of the metatext, fic readers respond to them, more fic writers (who are also readers) write responses to the first fanfiction, more readers respond to them. These interpretations are influenced by other metatexts (eg. crossovers), or ideology (eg. nihilist characters), or social ideas (eg. queering of many texts in fic). Entire in-fic universes are created. Some depart wildly from the metatext. Sometimes, an author may incorporate fanon back into their canonical work, tethering the OC to the fandom circuit. Sometimes, an author might make an extratextual insertion (hmmm...can you think of anyone in particular???) that fans completely and utterly reject, entirely disavowing that author and claiming the universe for themselves. 

In individual works, the intervention in the OC could be subtle or drastic. Taken as a whole, fanfiction tends to regularly dump on the circuit: it dumps on the author, whose authority it displaces; it dumps on publishers and distributors, whose products it displaces in favor of web-based archives. Any way you slice it, fanfiction intervenes in Darnton’s communication circuit.

This isn’t new information. People in fan studies have observed this phenomenon for years and described it in different ways. My goal is to analyze it from the perspective of book history, which is underutilized in fan studies. Only Catherine Coker has really suggested book historical observations as an analogue for fannish behavior. (If you’re reading this and you’re like ‘eXCUSE ME??? What about [abc human being] whose work is CRITICAL TO THIS??” then please!!! Send me their work!!!) 

The fun n flirty element to all this, because I’m in a book history program and book historians looooove ~materials~, is a discussion of the digital ties of this phenomenon. Traditional book history might look at trends in cover design or the manufacturing of printing ink (dissertations two of my friends are working on rn). What’s the materiality of contemporary fic? An ever-evolving digital interface and archive. I’m but a wee babe, and I wasn’t in fandom (or on the internet) during the early days of mailing lists and home-based servers and cease-and-desist letters that shut down sites. The communication, the world-building, the community of fandom is indelibly tied to strengthened digital infrastructure (even as fans disrupt that with offline relationships). I’m looking at the digital ties of this fanfiction communication circuit – what are the different digital dribs and drabs that contribute to the reader-writer relationship and distance fanfiction production from the original circuit? I’m talking Author Notes, Tags, comments, titles, tumblr text posts, reddit threads: things that inform our reading experience and distinguish fic, in form and function, from its source text. My dissertation can’t and won’t be comprehensive, because I am but one small lady with the processing power of an ant, and I am currently in the process of identifying case studies that reflect these ideas. (NB: I’m limiting myself to English-language fic w an American copyright law perspective. One lady can only do so much)

Wendla- ig hoe. Lotsa artsy photos. Probably has a ghandi quote in her bio. Definitely the type to put he s/o’s name in her bio too. She posts the occasional indie song cover on her story, she actually has a really good voice. Has a tumblr for her pics, it’s very aesthetic. There’s some discourse on there too, like those posts about asking before you hug someone. She reblogs them for martha and ilse.

Melchior- posts a lot of fake deep tweets that he probably stole. Has facebook for boomer memes about tv bad book good. Has tumblr to look at p*rn. He’s sort of normal on instagram, he posts pictures of his friends and uses an obnoxious amount of hashtags.

Moritz- his instagram has 2 posts, both from 2016. He only keeps ig on his phone to look at memes. He’s more active on tumblr and posts about whatever thing he’s obsessed with this month. Also reposts poetry from the mlm tag. He’s on reddit too and tends to scroll through it when melchior drags him to parties or dances

Ilse- tumblr for her art, has a light orange theme. It’s mostly sapphic art and i love her. She has a separate sjw blog for fighting terfs and fascists. Her ig is very artsy like wendla’s, i feel like she has a pastel grunge thing going on. There’s some pictures of her friends too, especially of wendla ;)

Hanschen- got instagram bc ernst asked him to. It’s mostly pictures of him and ernst or just ernst. He has tumblr too, one blog where he reposts architecture and art and moodboards, mostly mlm and bi ones. He has another tumblr that’s just selfies. Most of them get over 1k notes and no one knows why. 

Martha- she has a stunning instagram feed, many of the pictures are of her bc she’s gorgeous and has amazing fashion sense. She and wendla do photoshoots together, martha models and picks the clothes and wendla does location and takes the pictures. Martha also has a tumblr, one for activism and one for writing. She posts resources for people in abusive situations. Her writing is mostly poetry and a little fan fiction.  

Ernst- his instagram is mostly his art but he has a few pics of him and hansi and other friends. Also the type to have his s/o’s name in his bio. He does a bit of photography as well and joins wendla and martha on their photoshoots sometimes. Has a fandom tumblr and reblogs a lot of art with huge rants in the tags bc he has Feelings. 

Thea- her tumblr is a lot of those suggestions and date ideas. Plenty of yearning, bless her heart. She was probably into a couple ya fandoms back in the day. She’s constantly wiping her ig feed clean but when there’s something on it it’s always some gorgeous pics of her with lyrics in the caption. 

Anna- her main ig account has a couple thousand followers, many of which are baby d*kes who are in love with her. She runs one of those wlw ig accounts that are yearning tumblr posts with nature-esque backgrounds. She has tumblr, mostly for posting her thrift store finds and reblogs martha’s poetry.

It’s always difficult for him to identify what is causing the cinder block of pain weighing down his heart. Sometimes, he can just ignore it and go about his day until his friends and his lover unknowingly cheer him up enough for the feeling to dissipate. But in the middle of the night, it’s hard to get that reassurance. In the middle of the night, he can’t simply go about his day as if nothing is wrong. All he can do it sit and think, which, admittedly, has never been his forte.

Roman sits quietly on his side of their bed, eyes trained on Virgil’s sleeping form beside him. Chest rising and falling with every even breath. Dark circles beneath his eyes significantly reduced. Muscles relieved of their usual tension. Features soft. He looks so at peace like this. Roman’s heart pangs at the sight. 

He awaits a response from the only other person Roman knows of that might be awake at this hour. His phone rests in his hand at a low brightness as to not disturb his lover’s sleep, the conversation with Logan open and waiting. He’s sent several texts already.

Roman (2:47AM) hey u awake? 

Roman (2:49AM) lo i know you suck at this junk but youre the only one i can think of to talk to and i need help with emotions

Roman (3:02AM) please

He’s about to give up, to wallow in solitude, when a soft ping emanates from his phone and his heart rate increases. It reminds him to turn his sound off; Virgil is a light sleeper. After quickly checking to make sure his angel is still dreaming, he brings his attention back to his phone.

Logan (3:12AM) Roman, you are correct in assuming that I... “suck at this junk.” Why are you contacting me?

He chews at his bottom lip, worrying the skin of it more than he should; he knows he might break the skin and have an obvious tell in the morning, but he tries not to think about it.

Roman (3:13AM) youre the only person i thought might be awake rn

There’s a long, disturbing silence after he sends it. Logan reads it but doesn’t respond for several minutes. Roman’s heart sinks further down in his chest. Of course Logan doesn’t want to deal with his emotional ramblings; Logan is the most collected person Roman knows, aside from when he gets heated or annoyed to his limit. He’s the least emotionally vulnerable person Roman knows. He makes it seem like nothing gets to him.

Roman’s gaze returns to Virgil. His heart aches for a reason that he can’t seem to place. It feels odd to be the one awake at 3AM while his partner, literally practically the embodiment of anxiety itself, rests peacefully beneath the covers beside him. Again, just as Roman is about to give up, Logan responds.

Logan (3:20AM) Fair enough. Go on, then. What’s bothering you at this hour?

Roman sighs with relief. But his fingers cant find the motivation to type out his feelings, and he isn’t sure he’d be able to get the point across with text anyway. He rises from the bed, slowly and carefully, eyes on Virgil just in case, and tip-toes out of the room. He closes the door as quietly as he can behind him and pads down the stairs of the small apartment he shares with his love. He sits himself down on the couch and takes a deep breath before hitting the call button.

It rings a couple times. But Logan picks up, the sounds of quiet shuffling in the background before a soft, “Hello, stranger.” The corner of Roman’s lip lifts at that. He rises from the couch despite having only sat down seconds before, and begins to pace the living room.

“Hi.”

“Mind if I ask why you decided to call?”

“I just thought it’d be better.”

“I see.”

There’s a short silence. All of Logan’s words have been rather quiet so far, and Roman winced, realizing why.

“Is Patton nearby?”

“He is asleep in the next room.”

“Ugh... Duh. I’m sorry, Lo, we can go back to texting if—“

“No,” Logan interrupts him. It takes him by surprise, though it really shouldn’t. Logan has a tendency to interrupt. “No, if you felt the need to speak rather than to type, than this is what we’ll do.”

“Right,” Roman says, though he’s still hesitant. “Okay.”

Another short silence as Roman takes a calming breath and thinks over what he wants to say. How he wants to express what needs to be expressed.

“Lo?”

“Yes?”

“I’m scared.” He sounds like a child, and he knows it, but it’s the truth, and he isn’t going to waste anymore of Logan’s time by dancing around the subject.

“You’re... scared?” There’s a hint of surprise in Logan’s voice. “You? Of what?”

“Virgil.” It comes out like a wheeze, and he drops into a crouch, one hand in his hair. He can immediately sense Logan’s tension on the other line.

“What do you mean?” Before Roman can answer, Logan draws in a small gasp and says in an even quieter tone, “Is he hurting you?” 

“No!” Roman grimaces, shaking his head to himself. He feels terrible for even saying anything that could imply that. Virgil would never hurt him, and vise versa. “No, absolutely not.” Logan seems to relax, and voices a small humming sound that Roman takes as an ‘Elaborate.’ So he does. “It’s... I don’t know. I’m scared. Not of him, really but of... of how I feel, I guess. Most of the time I’m fine, but there are times, nights like this, where I just freeze, and I panic, and my mind is reeling and I’m so unsure of everything. It’s awful, Lo, it’s so awful, I feel awful for being so scared. But I can’t help it. I love him. And most of the time it’s wonderful, and I love loving him and being loved by him. But other times it’s terrifying.” He takes a deep breath, hands shaking, as he finishes his rant. Logan goes silent. probably thinking, and Roman doesn’t notice he’s crying until he rubs his face and his fingers come back wet.

Logan sighs on the other end and it hits Roman like a brick. At first he thinks Logan is judging him, for being so erratic and confusing for no reason. But then, “Roman, you have had your fair share of heartache, have you not? This is not the first time you’ve come to me in emotional crisis.” Roman sniffles and nods, though he knows Logan can’t see it. “It’s not uncommon for someone who has been hurt as many times as you to feel this way while in a loving relationship.”

That makes him feel a little better. Just a little. “Really?”

“Of course. It doesn’t mean that you don’t love Virgil, or that you don’t appreciate your partnership with him. It simply means your heart is on defense, you might say. But you’re a theater man so sports references may not be the way to go.” Another soft sigh, and then he continues. “Your heart... has stage fright. You’re ready to go on stage, you know your lines and you’ve got the entire play memorized down to the gestures. But let’s say that in the past, you’ve messed up. You’ve forgotten a line or two, you’ve stumbled over your words, perhaps forgot to even go on stage for one of your scenes.”

Roman grimaces. “This analogy is a little close to home, Lo.”

“Let me finish.” So he does. “Due to your past mistakes, you might find yourself nervous to perform, especially when you think back and dwell on those mistakes, even if they weren’t entirely your fault. Despite your memorization and skill, you still feel afraid to go on stage. You’re afraid something might go wrong.”

The more Logan speaks, the more it makes sense. He thinks for a long time, his teeth returning to abuse his bottom lip, taking slow and deep breaths in attempts to calm his emotions a bit. “That makes sense. So... There’s nothing wrong with me, right? It’s not... Ridiculous, for me to be scared like this?”

“Of course not,” Logan says, his voice sounding more genuine than Roman may have ever heard it before. “You’re not broken, Roman. Everyone gets stage fright at some point, to some extent. You’re not alone and there is nothing wrong with you.”

“Thank you, Lo.”

“You’re welcome. I suggest you talk to Virgil about this, at a healthy hour, and perhaps Patton too. Virgil deserves to know how you’re feeling, and Patton may be of more help than I am with this sort of thing.”

“Yeah. Yeah, okay, I’ll do that.”

“Get some rest, Roman.”

“Alright. You too, nerd.”

“I will try. Good night.”

Roman bids Logan goodbye before they hang up, and he stares down at his phone afterwards with a small smile on his lips. The tears seem to have stopped falling, but he’s vaguely aware that his cheeks are still wet and his eyes are no doubt red and glossy. He stands to go back upstairs just as he hears footsteps doing the opposite. He freezes, guilt immediately flooding his chest. He must have waken Virgil somehow. 

His lover comes down the stairs in a pair of pajama pants that he totally stole from Roman, and an over-sized sweater that he also stole. Roman huffs a little, the sight bringing upon another smile.

“Good morning, night owl,” Virgil murmurs, making his way over to Roman. He sounds and looks tired, his hair disheveled in an absolutely adorable way, his voice thick with sleep.

“Morning, storm cloud.” When Virgil gets close enough, Roman presses a kiss to his forehead and wraps his arms around his waist. “Did I wake you?”

“I wake you up in the middle of the night all the time, no worries.” Roman hums and rests his chin on the other’s head that’s now buried in his chest. “Why are you up?” Roman purses his lips, not sure if he should answer that quite yet. Logan did say to talk to him, but it’s late/early and it can probably wait until morning when they’re both well rested. But Virgil looks up at him with those worried eyes and asks, “Everything okay?” and he can’t lie to him.

Roman ends up bringing Virgil back up to their bedroom so they can be sitting comfortably while Roman explains everything to him. He expresses the same thing he expressed to Logan, though a bit more composed and better explained now. He tells him about the phone call, about Logan’s analogy. Virgil’s expression is unreadable the entire time, but he listens intently, his hand resting on Roman’s and his thumb rubbing soothing circles into his skin. When Roman finally finishes, he meets Virgil’s eyes cautiously, not sure what to expect.

“Okay,” is what he gets. He tenses a little, shifting in his seat.

“Okay?”

Virgil nods and laces their fingers together. “Okay,” he says again. “That’s... actually sort of relieving.”

Roman’s eyes widen. “Really?” Virgil nods again. “Why?”

He hesitates to answer, a nervous smile on his lips, his gaze everywhere except meeting Roman’s. “Cause I’m sort of the same way.” 

It isn’t particularly surprising, but Roman is still taken aback and has to ask, “Really?” again. 

“Yes, really, you dork. I don’t really talk about it, but I haven’t exactly had a sparkly clean past with healthy relationships that ended on happy notes. I...” He takes a deep breath, clearly preparing himself for what he’s about to say, and Roman gives his hand an encouraging squeeze. “I still get nightmares, sometimes. I get nights like this, up late, afraid. You’re not the only one that’s scared, Roman. I’m scared too. But... This is good. Talking about it. Fear feeds on loneliness, so... If you ever feel like this again, don’t be afraid to bring it up, wake me if you need to. Alright? And I’ll do the same. We could both use a little comfort from time to time.”

Roman is perfectly aware that he’s begun crying again, but there’s a smile on his face and he pulls Virgil in close, his arms tight and secure around his partner. “I love you,” he whispers into the other’s hair, kissing the top of his head. 

Virgil gives him a muffled laugh and drags him down to lie on the bed, exhausting filling his head as soon as it hits the pillow. Their legs tangle together and they hold each other as they both begin to drift. Roman just barely hears “I love you too, you royal pain,” before sleep claims him.

1. how did you start writing?

ooh boy this is a Story. okay uhh i was raised in this cult thing (long story that i’m willing to tell ltr) and part of our education process was writing books so uh i wrote a full length children’s book at like 6 y/o (maybe 5? i think i was 6 tho) and i wrote a couple more before we left. i kept writing tho and i’ve always sort of creatively wrote for myself, then at the end of 6th grade into 7th grade i found the wonders of fanfiction and i was like holy shit so i started writing johnlock fanfics (oof) and uh here i am now

2. what was your first writing project? tell us a little about it.

it was uh about some horses and girls and i’m not saying it was horseland but it was basically horseland. i don’t remember much except one of them nearly died after falling into a ditch because i was a dark and disturbed child (and an even more dark and disturbed adult now tbh) but there was that happy ending. so yeah. that.

3. what is your preferred mediums for writing first drafts?

word docs. i usually move it to a good doc after i’m done, but i like starting with word

4. what rituals or habits do you have around writing?

there’s a good couple. i usually get ideas on a whim, so i do a shitty outline on my phone (honestly it’s laughable if you look at them. i showed a friend a plan list and she started cracking up because most of it is just “??????”) and try to set up a plot flow first before writing. for original works, i actually draw the characters first so i can kinda have a fully put together mental image before i work. while writing, i put on (typically instrumental) music that goes with the mood of the fic (for example, for my demon fic, i put on The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey album) whenever working to kinda put myself in the mindset.

5. we all have a “type” - of character, plot, theme - what is yours?

oohh boy. uh, pain. i like writing people hurting and in distress. angst? hell yeah baby. character wise i write a lot of kinda bitter or sarcastic queer people who are secret softies. plot wise i usually go with a “man vs. self” shit. love that internal struggle.

6. introduce us to one (or more!) of your OCs!

heheh okay uhh i’ll start with my current project, a sapphic graphic novel i’m working on. there’s Summer, who’s a high femme lesbian. she’s like... the proper looking girlfriend who likes sweaters and long flow-y skirts and makeup but she’s the rebel and gets into trouble and smokes and gets fucked up on stolen vodka way too often. she’s short and a lil chubby and she’s just the problematic fave. her girlfriend, (who’s actual name is still up for debate, but i just call her Matchstick because she dyes her hair bright/unnatural red and that’s what Summer calls her) rides a motorcycle and wears leather and jeans, but she’s a straight (heh) A student who meditates in the morning and writes sappy poetry for her girlfriend. she’s like... average taller and kinda awkwardly lanky in that way, too. this is set in suburban New Jersey and Summer has a thick NJ accent while Matchstick moved around most of her life because her dad was military (nasty divorce about 3 years prior to when the story is set) but she finally settled with her mom and little brother.

i have another OC that i abandoned that i might bring into the graphic novel (despite her having her own story that i don’t quite know if i’ll finish? it was something i started working on like 3 years ago and abandoned because it’s a tad cliche). her name is ayala and she’s a mixed jew (half ashkenazi, half mizrahi) who’s got a grunge punk aesthetic and she’s the classic bitter bi bitch who just drinks black coffee and complains. honestly? light of my life. she sneaks butterfly knives into NJ and takes a grater to her jeans and just ugh. fave.

7. what’s your favorite genre to read?

fantasy, sci-fi, mystery, and queer YA romance (i have a building library of these)

fantasy, queer YA, and not exactly horror but dark stories (i’m writing a morbid children’s storybook rn to just str8 up submit to college board for a drawing portfolio)

9. how do you conduct your authorial research?

hah. google, usually. sometimes i ask my roommate shit, like once i leaned over my bed, looked at him and said “do demons have lairs?” and he thought i said layers so he looked at me, squinted and said slowly “like ogres?”

10. what does your editing (gasp) process look like?

hahAH nah it’s usually me writing shit out, like SLAMMING that shit out, then sometimes reading over it before i put it on my doc to edit. once it’s on the doc, i set my betas to it (sometimes more than my usual beta or two) and i usually read over it while they’re reading too so i edit then too? once they’re finished, i edit whatever suggestions. then i usually do another comb through, looking for little shit, then i share that shit.

11. what are your favorite tropes?

*chanting* MAN VS. SELF MAN VS. SELF MAN VS. SELF i love me some internal struggle. that and miscommunications and poor communication. basically anything that creates angst.

12. show off your writing space

i’m too tired rn but it’s just my loft bed. that’s it. it’s an ikea bed with a bunch of pillows and blankets on it, fairy lights wrapped around one side, and a shelf next to my head for my laptop/food/drinks/anything else i need

13. what is the most useful piece of writing advice you’ve ever used?

it’s odd because it isn’t exactly writing advice, but i use it in reference to my writing. i’m told that i tend to over-complicate shit, that i explain too much and i need to take a step back, and i kinda use that in my writing. it makes me look over paragraphs sometimes and just cut it because hey, that’s either not needed or i can explore the character in other ways than just saying how they’re like. i feel like it really helps because rather than saying shit about the character, i try to make them show it in their actions. it helps, i suppose.

14. what’s the least useful piece of advice you’ve ever ignored?

“do they have to be gay?”

15. your writing beverage/snack of choice?

oh boy okay this really depends on when i’m writing. if i write during early/mid-day, it’s usually a huge mug of breakfast tea with two spoonfuls of sugar, milk, and some kedem tea biscuits (usually original, but sometimes vanilla). sometimes i’ll make myself some instant noodles, if i’m really hungry. if it’s night time, it’s black coffee, and a lot of it.

16. how do you compile your ideas?

fffff uhhhh my note app on my samsung akdsfdsh okay i hate me too but all my ideas go into at least 3 unorganized note files because they always come to me in a whim and i don’t like putting a plot note with a summary note, so i have different note pages for different elements of the story.

17. what are your controversial opinions™ on the craft of writing?

oof uh... don’t write any romance that’s unneeded. also making characters do something shocking doesn’t make the story interesting. writers who feel the need to make a shocking twist aren’t good writers, because if that’s all that’s keeping readers entertained, then it’s not the writing itself, it’s them just trying to figure shit out. i’m not referencing horror or suspense, but let’s say a character who’s known for being aggressively loyal suddenly cheats on their partner for no truly viable reason, then that just feels like sloppy and boring writing that’s supposed to be interesting but isn’t. so, controversial opinion, but if you’re a good writer, you don’t need that kinda shit.

Umm yes and no? I’m not sure. If I have an American wedding I like to stick to a traditional white with maybe a peach and light pink here and there, but for sure I would love to do a traditional Hmong wedding.

Any suggestions for aspiring artists?

(i included some examples of my own art, a lot of it is older art from around 2015-2017, i am a little better now I'd like to think lol)

ok my first tip is draw every day, i say this as someone who literally drew every day for almost 17 years of my life and stopped after graduating and im rusty as hell and trying to get back into the groove of things rn. even if its a quick couple of doodles on snapchat, or on your arm, or in mspaint, draw something. It does keep your skills sharp and just doing that will help you improve.

my next thing is only relevant if you draw people, so if you only make art of scenery, animals, cars, or something else nonhuman, skip this one. okay for artists who draw people: diversity IS important. No matter how good your art is in terms of presentation, one skinny white model does not a good artist make. Any artist who can draw the same person over and over again is not a good artist. If you can't draw people of color, people with differing body types (skinny, fat, muscular, any mix of the three) people with physical disabilities, women that arent just big doe eyed and pixie nosed, etc. etc. then you need to challenge yourself and learn to draw varied people, which brings me to my next point

step out of your comfort zone AND use references! there is absolutely nothing wrong with using references, especially when drawing something new to you. Tracing/copying a reference photo will help you get the feel for whatever youre drawing and will make it easier the next time bc of muscle memory. Then you can redraw it and adapt that first drawing into your own style once you understand the basics and flow of whatever it is

Also use social media! use tags! get your art out there! post frequently even if its just something small just stay active (i know this part is hypocritical of me but its true)

something a lot of artists are scared of is accidentally copying other artists, but everyone gains influences from somewhere its literally unavoidable, as long as you're not blatantly copying or tracing someones whole thing and claiming it as your own, youre usually fine. taking little bits and pieces from the cartoons i watched as a kid is how i developed a style early on, but your brain will take influences without you even noticing sometimes, it happens and you arent a fraud or anything I promise. Also fanart is still valid art and can help gain a following so nothing wrong with posting it either!

i would also recommend experimenting with mediums and styles a lot if youre able to! its good to know a variety of skills even if you only plan on doing one thing, still just take a chance you might like a technique or process from a different medium that you wouldnt have had access to before. just in this post my art has been in pen, marker, watercolor, pencil, acrylic, and digital, and now i know which ones are my favorite and which one will work the best for how i want a given piece to look!

And its okay to not just have one art style! its also okay to have one main style you excell at! its whatever works for you, as long as it makes you happy to create your art. Being a good artist is about finding a balance between challenging yourself and still creating what makes you happy! Also sorry since this is mostly about drawing, idk if youre a painter or sculptor or anything, but im speaking from personal experience rn, it still applies to any form of physical art tho!
