Since my analysis post is still regrettably a work in progress, here's something more lighthearted: a semi-comprehensive list of my Jonah headcanons. Some I have talked about here; others are only known to me.
He wears sock garters. We should just assume this to be canon at this point.
The reason why he loves paperwork and scheduling (I know I have made at least three separate posts about it; I just care about him a lot) is the sense of control and predictability of it. It started as a coping mechanism, you could say.
As a young man, he was made to study Paradise Lost. He found it resonated with him to a simultaneously comforting and uncomfortable degree. He doesn't really read poetry nowadays, but he allows himself the sentimentality of keeping his leather-bound copy in his bedroom.
He and Barnabas knew each other from a young age (their relationship was one of codependence, though unbeknownst to Barnabas it was far less so on Jonah's part), and a small part of Jonah was relieved when he died in the Lonely. He felt that to properly carve himself a future he needed to outgrow the relationships that weighed him down.
His favourite cake is Sachertorte.
He likes to establish bets and wagers about inconsequential stuff with Peter just for fun. He enjoys the pretence of losing when the secret joke only he is in on is that he was correct all along.
He can't be said to enjoy exercise; it makes him forget that “his” body is something he is controlling and puppeteering around for his benefit. However, he occasionally visits the gym for the health benefits.
He definitely had a traumatic encounter with an entity in his youth; otherwise, he wouldn't have been interested in hearing Smirke's theories. He rarely, if ever at all, told anyone about it, even those who would have believed him. He wanted it to make sense, but he couldn't shake off the feeling that if he opened up he'd be misunderstood in a way he couldn't refute.
His favourite composer is Johann Sebastian Bach.
He can cook quite well, though in practice he rarely strays from a few practical recipes. He's both creative and patient.
When he was young, he had a lot of restless energy that made him pace back and forth and gesture vividly with his hands (unless he was deliberately restraining himself, which was often, but even then his eyes often betrayed that energy if one looked closely). Between being two centuries old and puppeteering other people's bodies around, his movements are a lot more languid and precise now.
He's hot. Every single one of his bodies, including his original, was hot.
The “seeing and not comprehending” aspect of the Beholding really comes into play in his understanding of his emotions, and has since he was young (and it is, in fact, not directly related to his evilness or monstrosity). He's aware of them, but he intellectualizes them to the point that his awareness of his feelings is more immediate to him than the feelings themselves.
He met Simon before his first bodyhop. At first, he was somewhat intimidated by him, this odd stranger, but after getting to know him he started getting into philosophical debates with him (“nothing in life matters and the world is an empty canvas where you can *make* things matter” vs. “nothing in life matters and any attempt to make them matter is futile, which is fine”). He later deemed it pointless and stopped engaging.
Very sparingly, he plays those 2048-style games. He likes combining many tiles at once; it's satisfying.
