October Movie Journal — Day 10

Cabin Fever (2002)

Overall thoughts: First of all, I ended up watching this movie because of the song A Rash Decision by Ice Nine Kills and to be fair I think the song does a pretty good job of capturing the whole vibe. This movie had me going “damn that’s fucked up” every five minutes from the very beginning of the movie. Not because of the gore though, just because of how these people were acting. Not even side characters were spared the fate of being intensely unlikable. The whole thing is soooo early 2000s. Ultimately though it is pretty fun, I wasn’t sold on the first half but the last half I actually enjoyed a lot. When everything starts to devolve, the plot really picks up. I appreciate that the filmmakers realized that more needed to happen than some kids just getting a gross disease and dying and it just gets more and more outlandish as the movie goes on which rocks. I think it would be more accurate (+ probably better received) if it was regarded more as a horror comedy than straight horror. Admittedly I don’t think a lot of the script has aged well but enough of it still lands for me. I appreciate its Evil Dead sensibilities. Anyway I feel like now I’m supposed to say some shit relating this to the pandemic or something

Did I enjoy it: Yes?

Would I recommend it: mmmm no

Reminds me of: House of Wax (2005), The Evil Dead (1981) and Evil Dead (2013), I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997)

When I was a kid my family pretended to get raptured so I would think I was left behind on earth while they all went to heaven.

I was like 8 years old and my sister and mom had gotten really into the Left Behind novels (bible fan fic about the rapture). In the books when the rapture happened the clothes that people were wearing when they got raptured were left behind in neatly folded piles.

One day when I was getting home from school my family decided that they would leave piles of neatly folded clothes around the house, and then hide in the basement.

The intended effect was that I would get home and see the clothes then, think that my family had been raptured and that I wasn’t good enough to get into heaven… or something?

The problem was that I had never read these books, and didn’t really think about the rapture very often. There was no reason that I would see some laundry on the floor and think “The rapture happened and I’ve been abandoned by God! I’ll never see my family again!! Oh nooo!!!!”

I just sat down and watched cartoons and eventually my family got bored and revealed that they were all hiding in the basement.

It’s a good thing I didn’t understand the joke, otherwise that shit would have been traumatic.

My solution for bloatware is this: by law you should hire in every programming team someone who is Like, A Guy who has a crappy laptop with 4GB and an integrated graphics card, no scratch that, 2 GB of RAM, and a rural internet connection. And every time someone in your team proposes to add shit like NPCs with visible pores or ray tracing or all the bloatware that Windows, Adobe, etc. are doing now, they have to come back and try your project in the Guy's laptop and answer to him. He is allowed to insult you and humilliate you if it doesn't work in his laptop, and you should by law apologize and optimize it for him. If you try to put any kind of DRM or permanent internet connection, he is legally allowed to shoot you.

With about 5 or 10 years of that, we will fix the world.
